When Late Night Attacks: Left Worries Obama Becoming Punchline
by Jason Killian MeathAs a candidate, Barack Obama was just as comfy on a late night couch as he was on the stump. The late night comedians and writers spared Obama from the barbs and prods they use to turn formidable politicians into laughing stocks. After all, they had their scopes set squarely on you know who… (paging Tina Fey).

A few weeks ago, a funny thing happened — call it a late night political paradigm shift. Conan O’Brien put some extra bite to his bark by featuring a tape of Sesame Street characters who earlier in the day had visited with the First Lady to talk about healthy eating. Conan overdubbed the clip and, suddenly, instead of talking about food, the muppets questioned Obama’s ‘United States birth certificate’ and his ’socialist health care agenda.’ In the past, satire like this might have been automatically assumed to be an attack on the right, but the skit ended up taking some Obama fans aback. Perhaps it struck a nerve.
Then, Saturday Night Live rolled out a skit blatantly saying Obama had accomplished nothing, and followed it up by laughing at his Nobel Prize — relatively mild in execution, but they managed to cause a stir in the press. These comedic bits, once routine against President Bush, distressed many Democrat opinion leaders. Suddenly, more than a few talking heads were calling for the White House to start making their accomplishments clear — (so it looks like they have some). Others were killing the messenger — calling SNL’s Fred Armisen, who plays Obama, “no Tina Fey.”
Touchy.
The left-leaning comedy writers are still holding back on the really good stuff. Will we ever see the skit where Obama runs with the Olympic torch, smoking a cigarette past a row of foreclosed homes while singing ‘Solidarity Forever?’ Probably not. Former SNL alum Chevy Chase recently told CNN he was very aware he was helping Jimmy Carter’s election as he lampooned President Ford as a klutz. According to Chase, SNL is “much more democratic now.” Nowadays, whatever political bit runs on SNL will undoubtedly repeat on the Today Show, CNN, MSNBC and others — right alongside serious political debate and discussion. As if SNL’s commentary is every bit as important as a national policy expert, or an analyst… or the rest of us.
But if these tidbits are going to be given such clout, couldn’t they at least be funny? It makes you wonder who should be more embarrassed — the White House or the comedy writers. On Obama’s winning the Nobel Peace Prize SNL joked he had won it “for not being George Bush.” Really? That’s the best they could do with that… Really?!
Whatever the laugh-factor, the bruise of the late-night anvil falling on the White House is undeniable. Washington Post blogger Jonathan Capehart summed it up, “When your ‘friends’ start talking about you like this — and friends with a huge megaphone and a feel for the national mood — the White House should listen.” They are.
Though the White House issues a “no comment” on the lampoons, it’s clear all the hub-bub is no laughing matter. White House’s deputy communications director Dan Pfeiffer told the New York Times, “You ignore [the late night comic's] influence at your peril. They are often leading indicators of where the narrative is headed.” Cowboy humorist Will Rogers noted long ago, ‘When people start taking the comedian seriously and the politician as a joke, everything changes.’
And so it goes with the ‘Change’ many once believed in.

Certainly these people are not going to "attack" Obama other than very lightly (just so they can have some cover to say "see we go after him as well.) Still, I wonder how many people really watch this stuff anymore who are not already with the program. I honestly wonder how much impact Tina Fey would have had if not for the left leaning media constantly playing clips of it and passing it off as "news."
I'm inclined to believe that the increasing attention being paid to Obama by the comedy writers is on a different scale then that which was given to Bush.
In the latter's case, the running theme seemed to be predicated upon the myth that GWB was an ignorant buffoon, which, as anyone with an MBA and/or fighter jet certification can tell you, is ludicrous. In short, there was little, if any, substantial truth to the myriad parodies of the 43rd POTUS.
However, in Obama's case, I would assert that the sting of the recent comedic parodies comes about precisely because there is a distinct ring of indisputable truth at the heart of the joke.
Those alleged comedians at SNL better be careful, when the gulags open they will find themselves first in line for not promoting the official Party image of Dear Leader. It does not matter to me if they get purged as long as they do not end up at my gulag and I get to go to the one with the Fox News babes.
Obama has reached a tipping point. Soon, we will have a field day with this empty suit. As it should be.
The lefty media can try to sanitize the Empty Suit all that it can, but, time eventually grinds away the superficial hype and posturing. Obama is such a feckless gadfly that you know his handlers are in overdrive doing damage control. When he opens his mouth IQ's drop. What's really scary is that he is yet to be tested with a huge national crisis, the kind of crisis that costs lives and requires quick witted and mature executive skills. God help us all if that happens.
Perhaps the comedians are holding back because they don't want the WH doing a Sunday-morning talk show blitz about how many comedians are not "real" comedians.
Oh wait, they seem to be proving that all by themselves with no help from the White House.
Obama's a punch line alright… and the joke's on us! (especially the dunces that voted for him)
"It makes you wonder who should be more embarrassed — the White House or the comedy writers"
The writers IMO, although this administration is quite the joke.
I think everyone, except Fox, is actually afraid of this administration, they're worried about getting "spanked".
"It does not matter to me if they get purged as long as they do not end up at my gulag and I get to go to the one with the Fox News babes."
lol..That's what I like to see, OPTIMISM

Don't worry- he's helping to create that crisis right now! Get ready!
Based on comments I read on YouTube after watching the Conan clip as shown on O'Reilly, some people think the skit was aimed at birthers and opponents of Obamacare. I think at most Conan was making fun of everyone, but did a better job of mocking the president than those who criticize him.
What do they mean "becoming a punchline"? He's BEEN a punch line since the last Presidential election…and will continue to be a running joke until the next Presidential election.
"…a running joke until the next Presidential election. " Hopefully he'll be running back to Blago town…a one term wonder and a shinning example of why the only position a Democrat should hold is the front leaning rest over a pile of steaming…

One of life's hard lessons; The White House is realizing that the universe doesn't revolve around them. Boo hoo!
Okay, but just to tell you. When Megyn gets to our gulag. HANDS OFF! You can hang with Julie Bandaras!
The comediens look sheepish in their parody of Obama. I think they are mortified of him getting OFFENDED by them. You know its racist to oppose his policies. Cowardice is unheard of until now in our media. They should look to FOX news to see that there is honest journalis without fear leading their agenda.
Did you see this week's Newsweek over. It has a head shot of Joe Biden with the headline: "Why Joe Biden is No Joke."
When you have to start telling people that the vice president is not a joke, that means he is one.
>"When people start taking the comedian seriously and the politician as a joke, everything changes."<
GE's Immelt (SNL/Lorne Michaels' boss) and Obama are friends, no?
How awkward must their meetings/calls be getting these recent days?
Oops–Newsweek cover.
Tina Fey's lampoon wouldn't have had any traction if the American people weren't so stupid. You might not be able to see Russia from Palin's house, but if you live on Little Diomede Island (Alaska) Big Diomede (Russia) is a mile away, and yes, you can see it. But public education in America is such that the kids get indoctrinated rather than educated ("Obama will bring peace to the world, mmm mmm mmm") so most of the people watching the skit thought Fey was funny and Palin was stupid. Truth is Alaska borders Russia and Canada. For those of us who still have a few neurons not washed clean by the propaganda, we are laughing at Fey's stupidity, not Palin's.
They might take a few swipes at our Dear Leader nine months into his presidency, but you can bet your bippy, if it isn't taxed off you, that 1 year before his reelection, he'll once more be treated with beatification.
Useful idiots like those at SNL, Hollywood, the media are always taken by surprise when the Dear Leaders put their bony posteriors in prison, too.
Oh, Mr. Lee, don't you know, it's racist to make disparaging remarks about anyone of color? They'll never do it. Not with any real heart.
I watch SNL to laugh. But often the laughs are very few and far between. They still have serious kid gloves on when it comes to Obama. Did you see that drivel last week, "The Rock Obama" with Duane Johnson? It was painful to watch. If SNL simply refuses to be funny when it comes to Obama, then please stop showing him. Intelligent people who enjoy comedy don't care about SNL's politics and we surely don't look to them for actual advice and commentary on the nation's state of affairs. They are charlatans, entertainers, jesters. You know, the "actors" from the bottom of the barrel.
Please SNL stop producing painfully bad comedy. If Obama is too sacred to lampoon, then avoid him. This week you could have done the "balloon boy" instead or any number of other funny things that happened recently.
I believe that with CNN fact checking their skits, SNL feels obliged to continue the social commentary. Get OVER yourselves! It is always been about funny. Most conservatives laughed when Tina Fey did Palin because it was funny. Let's try the same thing with Obama. Or not, just entertain me and stop trying to be important.
The most amusing thing I've seen about Obama is his getting the Peace Prize. That is a bigger joke than ANYTHING SNL or any other comedian can possibly come up with. Jokes are flying around the Internet, how he just won the Heissman for watching a college football game, how he just got the Nobel for medicine for getting his flu shot, how he led his team to the Stanley Cup in hockey, how the ATP announced cancellation of the Championship because none of the pro players can possibly defeat "the one".Isn't HBO making a movie about him. Bet he gets the Emmy. How about a quick documentary so he can get the Oscar. The possibilities are endless.
Well, I say it's about time. For years they bashed President Bush from everything from his way with words to his laugh. I haven't watched SNL in years, it used to be funny then it became more and more political and leaning left. What happened to the early years when no one was safe from the barbs, I guess those days are gone.To me this is a light at the end of the tunnel. It's one giant leap to keep the balance, I say go for it, bring out the big guns. It's a pretty sad state of affairs when the White House is thinking about investigating SNL for this. Come on guys it's just comedy just like everything in the current administration " A Comedy of Error"
I saw Blago on Huckabee a few weeks back and he comes across as a lot more honest and forthright than Obama. My bet is Fitzgerald (who made like Inspector Javier after Scooter Libby) pulled the plug on the investigations because he was getting too close to Obama and his minions. Blago is no angel, but compared to the other Chicago pols, he's St. Francis of Assissi.
I was actually shocked last night when Jay Leno made fun of Obama. His opening monologue was actually funny, and he had a few good zingers about Obama complaining about Fox. Has Jay realized that if he wants to up his numbers he needs to appeal to both sides? Will their be any backlash for his jokes? I guess we will wait and see.
Doesn't Kim Jong Ill average like 3 holes in 1 per game?
[...] When Late Night Attacks: Left Worries Obama Becoming Punchline [...]
we've got Shannon Bream, Jane Skinner, Alicia Acuna AND Ainsley Earhardt in our barracks. Nyah nyah…
President Obama and his administration provide comedic gold every day. If the comedians ignore this, they risk making themselves irrelevant (and more clueless).
More than that, Armisen decided not to do his pre-election imitation of Obama's diction and cadence.. He must be really scared…
Please reassure me of one thing: You record SNL, go out Saturday night, and watch the next day.
Watch for the "insider" administration resignations to begin. Rats of the Obama admin. type will run and hide as soon as they feel the threat to their livelyhoods and go back into hiding on a college campus near you
Given the right circumstances, yes they would. Their own economic survival is more important that the President. Seems to me, the MSM believes their economic survival depends upon very little scrutiny.
If that changes, and it might, then anything can happen. But I'm not holding my breath.
If I'm in line with Mike Baker, then it's all good.
I don't think so yet. But I am optimistic it is coming. But not yet. My opinion is these skits are nothing more than a veiled attempt to pretend they have some sort of integrity left.
Which they don't.
If it is fear, it's fear of not being considered cool, and being invited to the correct party circuits.
I watched the youtube version that was posted here at BH. I don't think that was any kind of shot at the president.
From where I'm sitting he's been a joke all along.
He also won the Betty Crocker Bake Off because he ate a Twinkie on air force one; was elected to the baseball Hall of Fame for throwing out the 1st pitch of the season; was presented with the Kennedy Honors for honoring Kennedy's; The Cub Scout Arrow of Light for being a brownie; placed #1 in Britain's Got Talent for teleprompter skills; 1st in show at The Westminster Dog Show for those ears; The Preakness, well, he does resemble a horse; walked away with Ms. America ( just because) ; sweeped Mr. Leatherman 2009 ( no comment); and my Favorite, Ms. Drag Chicago for sticking it to Rio.
why not? everyone else is.
I don't know why so many call Obama an empty suit. To me he isn't empty, he's full of communist/marxist theory that he must have been taught from his earliest days. He lies about it, knowing we'd never accept it if he just blurted out the truth before the election…or even now. But again, I don't think he's empty, he's full of very dangerous stuff and has surrounded himself with similar people, people who aren't as coy at hiding their agenda.
Thanks, Fox and Big Government for reporting what we'd never know from the MSM.
If they don't take off the gloves and hit him hard just like they've done with every other president before him, then the show will become irrelevant as mundane political and social satire and will finally go off the air. No big loss. Someone newer and better will inevitably step into the void.
Because they are seroius about thier agenda
and it is a scary thing
I think a skit involving Her Majesty and her British Subject is in order. The birth certificate Conan mentioned is a herring that is red: the issue is his father's status (UK Nationality Act of 1948) when God was born, and that Dumbama actually admits! lol, it's in plain sight!
Unfortunately, 99% of Congress (including Repulblicans, who do know) and 99% of the population don't care that although he may be a naturalized Citizen, he is not a natural-born citizen.
Constitution? We don't need no stinking Constitution.
The jokes just write themselves with this administration and the looney czars it's surrounded with. Now that even Obama's hollywood writers can't cover up the fact that the "emperor has no clothes on" we see what a buffoon, shyster, and incompetent the democrats acorn machine maneuvered to get elected.
Conan's Sesame Street skit with Michelle Obama, was hilarious! If Conan keeps this up, I may have to check his show out again!
I don't know. All of the so-called comedic jabs at Obama from the MSM comedy outlets have a very "pro forma" feel to them. Many comedians have finally realized that they can't maintain their shopworn reputations for "transgressive" or "in your face" comedy if they don't take a couple of shots at The One once in a while. A lot of this seems to be done out of a sense of duty towards a vague comedic tradition rather than out of conviction. Well—Every little bit helps I suppose.
SNL better be careful or they'll be accused of not being a "legitimate news organization."
How come I ain't laughin?
I wonder how much the TV show comedians have to hold back out of fear that Hollywood would boycott them.
Think of all the George Clooney's, Alec Baldwin's, Barbara Striestands in hollywood who would start refusing to appear on the late night shows.
They would be interviewing Chuch Norris and Steven Baldwin every night.
Of course they're scared. They've seen what happens to anybody who dares disagree with the President on anything, for any reason.
I was counting on Mike to be on the outside leading the Resistance.
I think we'll gradually see an increase in the number of satirical digs at Obama. He's losing the left for his failure to release terrorists from Guantanamo, his dithering on Afghanistan (i.e. pulling out immediately), his lack of commitment to the public health care option. I don't care which direction the attacks come from – IMO, anything that diminishes his authority and exposes him as an empty suit is fine by me. My dream is that he'll be challenged in 2012 from within his own party, preferably by someone even further left than he is (if such a thing is possible). Now THAT would be funny.
absolutely concerning W., I'd love to see the look on this ego-maniacs face if he were plopped into the seat of an F-104.
when the cold winds of winter whip down the streets of D.C. and NYC, Obama will seem much less impressive, even to his sycophants in the press…
and, don't forget he was the Kiwanis Club's "Man of the Year"!
I agree Conan's Sesame Street bit was hillarious. I will watch Conan more hopefully to see more great humor. It is very easy to see that such good laughs will not be found on SNL or Letterdoouche.
One of these days, a comedian or two will wake up to the fact, that if they lampoon OB as much as they did Bush, their audience will triple, and their ratings will skyrocket, along with their income.
Random thoughts:
1. Kudos to Jake Tapper, and Helen Thomas.
2. Remember how long we heard "I didn't inhale" jokes? Why nothing on admitted use of a far more dangerous drug?
3. Would love to see the editorial pages of WaPo, NYT, LAT, perhaps even USA Today published as one big blank sheet of paper save this notation:
"Due to unavoidable technical difficulties, approval from the White House Press Office for today's editorial opinions was not received prior to printing deadlines. We apologize for the omission, but access to government officials depends on White House approval of all published commentary. We hope to have the matter resolved for tomorrow's edition."
This administration is a joke, and the sooner the comics get in on it, the better for them.
You're not going to see the serious lampooning of Obama like they did with Bush or other Republican presidents. Granted Obama is getting some negative comedy now since there is just way too much material to be ignored but it will still be minor league compared to the lampooning done against a Republican president.
HEY LIBERALS!
He was a JOKE BEFORE the election. You dolts were too busy drinking the kool-aid to know it.
See y'all in 2010/2012.

Hi all. In a perfect world, ComCast takes over NBCU, fires the head of it and installs a new person. The new president give P.J. O'Rouke a sack full of money to produce and head write SNL (Lorne Micheals gets a note of thanks and a gold watch and his contract paid out and is escorted out). O'Rouke reviews the writing staff and gets rid of the hacks and replaces them with his own choices (maybe some of his old NatLamp pals).
P.J. O'Rourke would bring more success to this show then it's seen in the past 20 years. His humour is topical , edgy and most importantly funny. While he's a conservative now his stuff in the past has also been aimed at the conservatives. The ratings will go back up and people from both sides of the political divide will tune in for the laughs.
Are you kidding. It would be like a real life "Hogan's Heroes"!
Mike as Col. Hogan, Greg Gutfield as Newkirk, Father Johnathan as LeBeua, Greg Proops as Kinchloe, Andy Levy as Sgt. Carter. Planning the resistance from within the gulag being led by Bill Shultz as Klink and Ed Shultz as Sgt. Shultz! Along with Rachel Maddow as Hochstetter and Keith O. as Burkhalter!
I tell you, it would make a mint!
'Cuz yer a racist, obviously (sarcasm off)
And that would be a problem?
I have not been to see a movie at the theater since 2006, I would stand in line overnight to see that one. Love the character choices.

I see no evidence we've reached a "tipping point." I see no signs of Obama parody emerging in the mainstream. On the contrary, one senses a kind of collective flinching at SNL's tepid satire (which, by the way, was more about Obama's insufficient liberalism than his clownish incompetence and malicious malfeasances). I don't see this changing. Too many people in the media are invested not only in Obama but in the liberal manifesto and deliverance he symbolizes and promises — as they are equally invested in hatred for the alternative — to ever consent to parody. It would be far too humiliating, and too final. There is no stepping back from parody. It is a kind of death.
What we'll more likely see is just more of the same — entrenchment on each side. This will lead not to a tipping point, but to a cracking point.
No, we've reached an impasse. There will be no "tipping point." only a cracking point.
Obama has The entertainment and media Left is not constitutionally capable of parodying Obama
You can tell how desperate liberals are becoming by watching their surrogates like the left leaning "History Channel." It's Nazi's and JFK (as deity) almost nonstop (and it's not even November 22nd yet). Get it – Nazi's bad, JFK (like Obama) a god. Of course, those shows conveniently gloss over the FACT that Lee Harvey Oswald was a MARXIST and a SHARPSHOOTER when he was in the Marines, and instead paint him as an incompetent patsy of some vast right wing conspiracy!
And yes, the Nazi's were bad, but the number of people murdered by the Communists in the 20th Century (S talin, Mao, Pol Pot to name a few), make the Nazi's look like a bunch of pikers in fancy uniforms!
Sadly, American school children aren’t taught this FACT!
How about it History Channel: Less propaganda and more “real" History.
SNL? Stopped watching.
Unless they start hitting hard against this Cold War perpetrated by the DNC et al then consider me a non-viewer. Excluding sports if it is on the big networks then most certainly a non-viewer.
"Will we ever see the skit where Obama runs with the Olympic torch, smoking a cigarette past a row of foreclosed homes while singing ‘Solidarity Forever?" Why not? Fox needs to come up with a counterpoint late night DNL (Democrat Numbnuts Live) that really uses some good material to lampoon Reid, Pelosi, Frank, Obama, Biden, Gibbs, all of the Czars and the host of failed administration policies. After all, the Obama minion declared war on FOX News so why not fire back with comedic relief? Dennis Miller, Chelsey Grammer, the Simpsons and the South Park gang could have a field day.
Have you taken a close look at Hollywood recently? They actually don't seem to have much concern for their own economic survival — they seem to be hemorrhaging money for the sake of political correctness.
Once Pres. Opompous gives the leftards what they want entirely, then the comedic morons will go back to doing what they do best….smooching their messiah's black arse.
They've seen what happens to anybody who dares disagree with the President on anything, for any reason.
They stop getting invites to all the best conference calls.
I saw Blago on Huckabee a few weeks back and he comes across as a lot more honest and forthright than Obama.
That's actually rather frightening…
Fox needs to come up with a counterpoint late night DNL (Democrat Numbnuts Live) that really uses some good material to lampoon Reid, Pelosi, Frank, Obama, Biden, Gibbs, all of the Czars and the host of failed administration policies.
They've tried that. The Half-Hour News Hour sucked.
I've taken a look Hollywood. And I've also taken a look at the rest of the country. America is a big place, a lot bigger than Hollywood.
I have this theory, with absolutely no way to prove it, other than point to WWII as an example.
The vast majority of Americans are simply too busy, making a living, living their lives, trying to raise families, to really pay all that much attention to Hollywood or Washington. I believe the Japanese were correct, America truly is a sleeping giant. And on only very rare occasions, do people put their own lives on hold, and truly come together.
The last time I saw it was 9/11, and before that the Reagan land slides. I think the President may turn out to be a uniter after all, but not in the way he planned at all. We'll see in 2010 with the mid terms. Come November keep your eyes on the polls, but not too much, they don't usually start getting really accurate till around September before the election. I think (and I hope) we'll all be extremely surprised.
Tina Fey's impersonation got traction because she's semi-hot and imitating a major league hottie.
You've hit on something that is more than a little disturbing. Dunn basically came out and said the media are in their pocket and are nothing more than tools of the president. That the media is so wussified or ideological that it doesn't bother them shows just how little pride in themselves and their profession they have. I haven't respected the propaganda media for a lot of years but I sure thought they respected themselves. Apparently not.
I think there's a vulgar term that ends in whipped. The media is Obama-whipped.
You have a point. I used to always get a laugh at the end of Special Report. Now when it's time for the joke, I turn it off. There is nothing funny about what's going on in DC.
Instead of an "all hail" after Obama's name, shouldn't you be adding "peace be upon him"?

When in doubt about the reason for a person, group, or organization's actions, consult economics.
Everyone has resources, and goals, and incentives. The incentives explain how the resources are used to obtain their goals.
Their resources are the MSM, their goal is nice, cushy jobs with big pay checks. So what's the incentive?
In my opinion, they've concluded a popular, liberal president will bring viewers back. But when push comes to shove, that incentive will change, as needed.
late niters are waiting to see the putdown from America's favorite – fox
guess leno saw how much mmoore did to him and he decided he had better keep sticking it to the America haters
When all you have left is image and Greek columns you take every two bit comedian seriously.
Leftist book burners are alive and well… old commies never die, they just find another way to hide the truth and use the do-gooders in Hollywood who don't know any better.
The truth is that socialism doesn't work and never will. Socialist notions of economic and social justice are a fraud and a lie, and they have to hide it anyway they can — on all venues. Fight back with your wallet.
Blago has *better hair*!
Fair Point, I meant only from their perspective.
I think the defect in the armor is finally being found by his own people. Obama (all hail) isn't funny and so the Comedy aimed at him isn't either. I wish i could just laugh at this administration.
If you are waiting for left-wingers to apply the same standard to BHO as they do to everyone else, it will be a cold day in hell first.
When they mocked Palin, it was mockery. They are never laughing with you, they are laughing at you.
everyone here is making the mistake of comparing Bush's treatment with that of Kim Il Obama…
You all must put HOPE posters in every room. And NOT the 'Joker Socialist' ones, either. Bush as Satan dartboards are your only recreational wallhangings. No jokes. Only fawning praise for The One Who Will Lower the Oceans is permitted. Any reference to Communists in the cabinet- even if true- will NOT be tolerated.

Come on you closeted MSM comedians.! Come on out! This administration is a virtual plethora of comedic material. YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS STUFF UP ANY BETTER. The wacko czars? Just look at Anita "Mao" Dunn, head of communications, with that "reptilian " licking of her lips. Oh, I guess that would be cruel to immitate. And Cass Susstein(sp) ,who thinks animals should have legal representation? AND RAHM !! Ex-ballet dancer and current Secretary of State and Chicago Thug, infamous for his potty mouth! Barney Frank, Kevin"Mambla"Jennings. Its endless. ..What a collection of social misfits. It would be funny if they weren't so dangerous. I admit that my family was no "Brady Bunch", but I am gaining a greater appreciation for my upbringing daily!
Until Fred Arisen actually turns his talents to doing a heartfelt impersonation instead of the weak imitation, we know they're pulling their punches. Armisen has the skill and the talent, just not the nerve. Impersonating Obama is easy. I could do a better job than FA. Justsayafewwords…turn to left…sayafewmorewords…turn to right…makingsuretopause….fornoparticularreason…pinchairwithlefthand…chopwithright…
Obama's attempt at hypnotic delivery is hilarious. But they're afraid of the laughs.
I've been an SNL fan for a long time, but I started cutting back on certain parts of the show starting when GWB was president. I would just mute those skits, then I learned to not watch Weekend Update, because it was always against republicans, and finally I just stopped watching all together because they were trying so hard to influence the last election that they forgot they were supposed to be a comedy show. I'm watching it again now and have noticed that since Obama has been president, the political skits have gone way down, so they actually do focus more on the stuff that I like.
But I agree, the last sketch with the "Rock" Obama was painful to watch. If you're not going to be funny for real, just skip it. Soon SNL will be mocked for being too GENTLE on Obama.
AlistZ:
My point was– if SNL views BHO as a messiah figure (and I mean literally) then they should just decide to never show him again. Let's make him off limits like Mohammed, Gandhi, MLK, Jr, Jesus, and the Buddha. That way, we can go back to having fun and laughing at 11:30 on Saturday night. What I dislike is their attempt in engaging Obama with satirical humor, but having everyone else be the butt of all the lame jokes. It is pathetic and SNL should be embarrassed at their total lack of professionalism. Lorne Michaels is like a giddy school girl when it comes to Obama. If they have a policy of refusing to joke about black people, then they owe James Brown an apology.
The Conan bit is making fun of crazy birthers , not Obama. No wonder there are no popular conservative comedians when you can't even decipher a simple sketch like that.
Burqa Hussein and Plugs McBiden, the gaffe twins, are the pot-o-gold but State media ignores the rainbow. Face it, SNL are State media.
The reluctance of mainstreet media to do Obama jokes is easy to understand. Put yourself in their shoes, do you feel uncomfortable with Jesus jokes? How about negative stories about Jesus ? If I even feel uncomfortable invoking His name in this post, imagine their apprehension at disrespecting their "messiah".
A vigilant watchdog press has existed throughout our history, a check and balance on government – the fourth track. That they, as a whole, seem almost an arm of the White House and progressive liberals represents a clear danger to our liberties.
LIBERTY can die by a thousand cuts, we need to stop the bleeding.
Nah, Obama will be on the 2010 / 2012 campaign trail in California, Florida, Arizona and Hawaii where he can be lookin' good running down the steps of Air Force One in shirt sleeves towing his wife, in her fashionable high belted sundress, and his two kids dressed in J. Crew fashions.
It’s a wonder he didn’t get a *“pullet surprise” for the autobiographical books he wrote.
*A favorite quote of Herb Caen who won a Pulitzer prize in journalism.

I accidently watched SNL the night they did the "I accomplished nothing" skit and I was surprised at how funny it was. I stopped watching it when they kept doing nothing but Sarah Palin every week, plus they are not that funny anymore. The funniest outcome of that skit was that Wolff Blitzer actually had a panel analyzing the skit. Now that was funny!
