Obama’s Health Care ‘Money Pit’
by Jason Killian MeathElecting a president is like buying a house, we want to know what we’re getting into before taking the plunge — conservative Texas rambler or meterosexual Chicago condo with a view? Is the house going to be practical in 1 year, 2 years — how long do we want to stay in this house anyway? God forbid, we move in and the house starts sucking up all of our money. When the checkbook balance is in the red, savings dried up and credit cards maxed-out… what do we do? If you are President Obama, you decide to splurge on a major renovation. Namely, a pricey soup-to-nuts overhaul of America’s health care system.
Recall Tom Hanks and Shelly Long in the 1986 comedy “The Money Pit?” A pair of newlyweds bite off way more than they can chew as they undertake a massive restoration of their dream home — which is really just a big lemon. They’re strapped for cash, but instead of buying an affordable starter house, they go for a dilapidated mansion. Bathtubs fall through floors, stairways collapse and what should be a blissful first year of marriage heads south in a flash. Sounds like what’s happening with Obama’s health reform!
Need more? Think about the knucklehead contractor the couple hire who soaks them for every penny while rushing through details with shoddy workmanship (ahem, Nancy Pelosi)… and the analogy goes on…
When President Reagan signed a stimulus plan for $750 billion in 1981, it successfully yanked the nation out of a deep recession. But it wasn’t just the money — Reagan’s unyielding optimism and deep tax cuts also did the trick. It would have been irresponsible, to say the very least, for Reagan to wallop the country with major health care reform. Those folks from the 80’s would have thought he was nuttier than Pee Wee Herman.
Obama wants to ram through ’sweeping health care reform’ in a matter of weeks – calling for massive tax hikes, job crushing and business strangling fees and higher premiums in order to pay for it. In “The Money Pit,” Hanks buys the home for $200,000, only to discover it will cost over a million to fix. Well, we’ve gone and married Obama and now he’s picked out a hopelessly decrepit house for us to live — he’s just waiting to carry us over the threshold. Meantime, Congress counts the ways all of us will pay to get ‘er fixed up!
Of course, the rub on all this is that Americans aren’t in the market for a government makeover of the health care system. Sure, back in the go-go days of low unemployment and a bull market, it sounded like a good idea. Fixing health care polled well in 2008; naturally, Obama weaved it into his master brand of Change We Can Believe In®. Just one problem: we don’t really believe in that change any longer. According to a recent Zogby poll for The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, 84 percent of Americans, are “very satisfied” or “satisfied” with the health care they currently receive. This was the year’s largest poll to examine American attitudes toward health care reform. Today, people are more concerned staying out of foreclosure, staying afloat and keeping a good job. In tight times, priorities must change. Extreme Makeover anyone? No way. Try Fear Factor.
So, 84 percent don’t think their health care plan needs to be fixed, and America faces one of the worst recessions in modern times. Obama’s mantra is unprecedented: if it ain’t broke, I’ll fix it anyway. What makes anyone think Obama or the Congress knows how to fix health care, anyhow? Some Congressional leaders around long enough to know, say he just dusted off Hillary’s old plan from the 90’s and scratched out her name. It’s like Tom Hanks’ penniless and pitiful character says in “The Money Pit,” ”Just because they showed up to collect the money, is no guarantee that they’ll show up to do the work… and if they do… I can’t pay for it!”
Of course, comparing the health care debacle to a romantic comedy from the 1980’s is a lighthearted look at a tragic situation. Our ballooning national deficit is fast on the way of recalling another Tom Hanks title: “A League of Their Own” (“Big” would be too understated). This is serious business. It is Obama’s first major policy initiative and it is tanking, along with his poll numbers. I was sorry to hear one little girl recently cite a news story that had alarmed her: “My generation is going to have to pay for all of this,” she said with disappointment. Though she was far too young to vote, she had been swept up in Obamamania. Now she was getting buyer’s remorse.
The good news is that she, like many others, might learn a valuable lesson — when the honeymoon’s over, don’t ruin your life by jumping headfirst into The Money Pit.

[...] Obama’s Health Care ‘Money Pit’ by Jason Killian Meath [...]
The main reason why a DEMOCRATE wanted to do this was eligible voters….. the next step Obama will do is ILLEGAL AMNESTY.. then he will have a additional 20 million voters (not sure of the number of illegals)… then he will ride of into the sunset of his second term and the deomcrates will be in UTOPIA…. or a MONEYLESS PIT THEY CALL THE UNITED STATES!!!!
Interesting the biggest pressure not to revamp into healthcare cost hell, it seems is not from the Republicans but rather the Blue Dog Dems.
Did a cartoon on it if anyone has any interest:
http://beartoons.com/2009/07/22/bearman-cartoon-b...
I think this is about killing off our wealth, making everybody equally miserable and DEPENDENT on government insuring Democratic rule for 50 years or more. Of course you are correct, it is more serious than a film comedy, but that does nicely illustrate the point. Eventually there is no money left to throw in the pit.
I so wish I could solve all my personal and financial problems by spending massive amounts of other people's money. Must be good to be the king.. err the one.
I really like!
Why do we NOT have a congress capable of pulling in the reins on this insanity called the Obama administration?
Compared to the significant and substantial issues allowed to be forced on this country by an irresponsible and compliant congress, the set-to over Obama's asinine remark regarding the Cambridge police handling of his 'brother' doesn't amount to nearly as much, but with me, it is the straw………….
Time to muzzle this wanna-be socialist occupier of the office of the presidency, and time for congress to step up and do what they have been ELECTED TO DO.
The Dems can pass this anytime. They own the entire government, for the time being. There's nothing stopping them if they TRULY wanted to pass this mess. They know it's a sham and want cover by having some Republicans on board with it.
Wolf, or just not pay your taxs…. and use that m oney to pay your bills off.. you could get a STELLAR job on his cabinet instead!!!
I am actually beginning to believe he is destined to be a " the one" termer.
I am actually beginning to believe he is destined to be " the one" termer.
My only complaint is you made his ears look big . . . oh wait, they are big. Nice job!
I have been feeling that way as well….. It would be a great WIN for the country if he does only one term!
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.
They are great!!!!! I love how last night the MESSIAH blame the republicans for blocking this bill….. they cannot do anything about it… it is the DEM's holding this bill hostage…. they know it will be the downfall of there party if they vote it through!!!
"The Dems can pass this anytime. They own the entire government, for the time being. There's nothing stopping them if they TRULY wanted to pass this mess. They know it's a sham and want cover by having some Republicans on board with it. "
Agreed, although as has already been pointed out, some moderate Democrats realize that tax hikes, more bureaucracy, and rationed health care (leaving the elderly to die while extending "free" health care to formerly illegal aliens) aren't smart career moves for public servants.
The RINO Senators from Maine will probably go along with Obama-care, as will the fair-weather senior Senator from Pennsylvania, whom the Dear Leader can say was until recently a Republican.
Most GOP Senators and all House GOPers were smart enough, to my own amazement, to oppose the Stimulus handout, although too many went along with W on the first bailout. Hopefully the same happens with Obama-care. Heck, if the blue-dogs keep their new-found sense of fiscal responsibility, it may not pass at all.
Oh, I would do that, but then i would have to register as a Dem. I've been "trained to eat things that would make a billy goat puke", but even my stomach can't handle that.
Now that is a hope and change I can get behind.
And an painfull yet astute object lesson learned as well.
And a painfull yet astute object lesson learned as well.
I do not think that too many people who live in a mansion….or at least what passes today for a nice house….would tear it down over their heads to build an outhouse and yet that is what Obama proposes to do with health care in this country. If his plan is so damn good then it ought to apply to the entire population and that includes the high and mighty members of Congress.
This has got to be the worst idea ever. Do you guys know they are actually going to have the elderly decide if they want to continue to have medicine or if they would rather 'die naturally'? That and older people will have more services than the young because well they've already had money spent on them as productive members of society. and the iceberg knee slapping great kicker is this.. all doctors are going to have to learn how to perform abortions.. It's outrageous!
You really think anyone's going to learn from this?
the one I like is 'death couselling' for anyone over sixty.
They used to make movies about this stuff in the sixties…Logans Run, Soylent Green.
believe me, this isnt over…like communism ; the socialist mantra is…."thats OK, we can wait forever."
meanwhile this horror goes on the back burner for a couple months.
Some will, others wont. At the very least, we have another "I told you so" in our arsenal against future BO's. As always, we and those who follow us will need to remain ever vigilant.
after this one term, Joe will be forced to move on to other things… unfortunately for him, Gore has already cornered the market on his lucrative Global Warming Scam. Of course he can always start selling 2012 end of the world insurance and products ala Y2K.
Very good! I wrote a dark take on Obama-care if you have a few minutes
http://shermansmarch.blogspot.com/tes:
It has all the villians of this sorted govrnment disaster-in-waiting, bureaucracy, the Civial Securtity Force, heck I even bashed ol' Teddy K.!
I had always wondered if those movies were truly prophetic. Now we know.
does anyone else's head throb just thinking about Barry and Crew and the damage they are doing? i better go buy me some tylenol while it's still legal…
Last night is a great example. The object of said "news conference"? Pimp Obama/Congress health care takeover garbage. The headlines this A.M.? Some idiot black professor from Harvard and race. He missed the ball, he got off message!. Thank Goodness he's an undisiplined dolt!
and shove it out the door, real hard!
I'm still pimping my long form writing…I hypothetically expolre this very subject, in a dark twisted way. A piece of fiction that may get scary and real…please take a few minutes to read it at:
http://shermansmarch.blogspot.com/
Please, tell me what you think!
Bev, the rush is…. HE the MESSIAH wants it……thats the only reason why….
I want Ted Kennedys kind of heath care!
Last time I checked, Hawaii tried and quit the state run health care business. If they found it didn't work , then why wouldn't Obama learn from his birthplace of the fallacy of the idea? As for the cost, Democrats never run out of excuses to spend your money.
Very dark.. That is very scary. The irony of the sarcasm is not lost on me either. I have always liked sherman's blog and have several friends who write for it.
Obama is like Chevy Chase in National Lampoon's Vacation. Despite numerous obstacles and justified complaints that the plan isn't working, Chevy heads toward the amusement park (Magic Mtn!) and it's closed! Just didn't get enough information beforehand, I guess.
For a couple of decades now, the Democrats' idea of equality is equality of outcome, not equality of opportunity.
Thus this major health care overhaul is about equalizing those who don't have insurance and those who do — never mind that the former might be on welfare and eligibile for Medicaid — that's not THE SAME as having Blue Cross-Blue Shield. No way to get them on BC-BS, so what does Obama want to do? Just as the Dems have done in the past forty years. Take away from those who have and give to those who don't, i.e. do away with BC-BS and put us all on Medicaid. That way those on the dole have the illusion that they're just like everyone else. They don't have to be ashamed of not working or not producing. Nobody can tell that they aren't. Our initial mistake was to give money for welfare. What we should have given instead was housing, food, clothing, medical care, but not a red dime to keep up the illusion that they are not being taken care of by others. Illusions only seem fragile. In truth they're as strong as spider silk. Ever tried to take down a spider web with a garden hose? Hard to do.
Thank you for your time and input. I'm going to keep slugging until this guy is neutered.
As I mention above I have written a satirical twist on "death counseling" in a longer form piece at posted at
http://shermansmarch.blogspot.com/
If you have the time please check it out.
Bev…I picked the city of Bridgeport, Conn. to write a piece about healthcare and ageing. It's kinda dark and ugly but I know you'll like it. It's posted at:
http://shermansmarch.blogspot.com/
If you can, let me know what you think!
Donn, I specifically mention ol' Teddy in the same piece I'm telling Bev about…it's at:
http://shermansmarch.blogspot.com/
It's fiction, but fiction can "come to pass" if we don't watch out!
Then bury it under a pile of taxpayers $$$$$……

U.S. House: Democrat controlled from 1954-1994 Fourty Years…heck 50 years isn't beyond dreaming for these people! Say Jed,I'm shamelessly pushing a dark essay about Obama-care, it's at
http://shermansmarch.blogspot.com/
If you have the time please give it a read, I'd appreciate it! Thanks!
I get a grim chuckle out of the sudden devaluation of the Congressional Budget Office. During the last couple of Republican administrations the MSM treated CBO pronouncements as Holy Writ. Now that the office has slammed Obama's figures on health care reform the CBO's projections are suddenly Page 8 news.
Also, look for a full-court press on health care after the Congressional recess featuring various media-friendly Little Nells and picturesque "working men and women" telling us that they face imminent death if the Obamacare package is not passed in toto. [By the way there is a great drinking game you can play. Listen to a speech by a Democratic candidate for anything including Coroner, Sewer Commissoner or County Engineer. Take a drink whenever they use the phrase "working families" or "working mean and women." You'll be blitzed within twenty minutes.]
The Money Pit reminds me of this headline: "Giant U.S. Money Leak Ruins Floors Throughout China" http://optoons.blogspot.com/2009/07/giant-us-mone...
Sounds like our reaction to Obama's presidency …..
I couldn't agree more, Bev, I think that this could be a rallying cry for those against this bill. I keep asking the "why now?" question too, and I haven't seen or heard a single coherent answer.
Hey folks, PLEASE help vote this idiotic video down, and make a comment about its basic fallacies. The DNC and its cronies will keep spreading this misinformation as far as they can if we don't keep speaking out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cc9dRP2iKuM
- Disagreeing with a Democrat is not doing "nothing", it's the highest form of patriotism
- The Democrats have control of the government! So why are they blaming Republicans anyway?
Politicians do not care about the money pit it’s not their money. A more apt description would be “bottomless money pit.”
Thanks Dark
thanks jed
I think you're right. They're deliberately throwing the leftwing kitchen sink at us so fast that we can't keep up with it. And this is from an administration that promised transparency.
Jamesb – read it,; nice job. posted a comment
Hey Wolf, Learned? yeah the only thing anyone from this administartion will learn is one thing….. and it will be say it aint so Joe….. and thats to keep his moouth shut!!!!
This is all a diversion to keep the media and the people distracted from the legislation that is still getting passed. Look for free collage education for those who "enlist" in 10 years of service to our government before the August recess. No more private loans for collage education only Government.
There has been over 3300 bills introduced so far under this congress in 6 months. Who can keep up with what congress and what this president is really doing?
No one in Congress or our President have been able to give me a clear reason why we have to do this now. Are there people dying in the streets somewhere in this country because they can't pay for healthcare that I don't know about? Every time this question is asked, there is some convoluted canned response like "Because…" WHAT IS THE RUSH?? However that being said, if they want this, I will also insist on a clause in any legistlation that might be passed,
"All members of the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of our Federal, State and Local goverrnments and all appointed and hired employees of all agencies and branches of any Federal, State and Local goverments and all family members must be subject solely to any public healthcare system with no exceptions or opt outs for privately funded healthcare."
In other words, they must wait in line just like the rest of us with no preferences given except for medical emergencies. If they make rules that I can't get a pacemaker after 70 years old, then neither does any aging Senator or President or President's mother in law.
I'm worried with where and when will the spending stop. I really wish my children did not have to bear the burden of our generations mistakes and wayward ideas. We should want a better life for them as our parents did for us. But its personal greed that put us here and its personal greed that’s keeping us here. History will record that the baby boomers have failed as a generation.

Sadly, for the most part, our elected congressional representatives are pretty much focused on getting re-elected. As a candidate, Barrack Obama was able to get away with flowery rhetoric promising increased coverage for more people at less cost. He was pressuring congress to act quickly because the runaway costs of health care constituted another "crisis."
When the legislation gets laid out, it reveals the absurdity of his original premise (more for less; less filling tastes great) by revealing how much MORE the plan will cost. Like the cheap politician he is, he now says he will only support a "revenue neutral" proposal. That, of course, is a catch 22 proposal. If the reason for the so called "crisis" is runaway costs, a "revenue neutral" proposal does NOTHING to lessen those costs . As most Americans begin to see the emperor has no clothes here, congress sees which way the wind blows and he loses support. It may be for the wrong reasons, but it looks like this socialist government grab is in real trouble.

Their people are telling ours (The Conservative Society for Action) that THIS IS WHAT IS NEEDED by them to help kill this bill and put it away for good. CALLING IS BEST. PLEASE CALL. You do not need to be a constituent to be heard. Just say "I am against this bill, every part of it."

And get involved with your local conservative-action groups.
Democrats blaming Republicans for Democrat failures has parallels to the black hucksters' penchant for blaming whites when liberal policies hurt the black communities.
When liberals screw up, they always blame someone else. Self-responsibility is not a liberal trait.
I LOVE that scene!
But to make a slight correction, the characters in this movie weren't newlyweds – they didn't get married until the end of the movie.
in my opinion one of the biggest problems with healthcare today, and has not been addressed by the one….is that drs must practice defensive medicine at all cost…think the trail lawyers are in barrys pocket. ??
