It seems in ObamaWorld, a picture is worth a thousand paychecks — $5 million a year distributed in salaries alone. Everyone from ethnocentric Message Coordinators to Town Hall Organizers to Speechwriters will divvy it all up.
One of the little secrets in ObamaWorld is that, while the President made good on his promise not to raise salaries, he quietly added more high paid staff. Lots more. Hence, an army of image makers are paid by taxpayers to ensure the president’s message saturates the daytime airwaves, grocery aisle rags, demographically desirable blogs and that twitters are at full tilt. Or, is that twit?
The world hasn’t seen this much obsessive compulsive message control since the days of Joseph Goebbels. The verdict is out whether all this taxpayer expense is working. After all, the president still enjoys an extended honeymoon with the media, and this kind of infrastructure would suggest he is not living in a fool’s paradise. Let’s face it, right now the media sees a superstar who can fill a prime time special, sell magazines or drive web traffic — but that will change as his approval numbers continue to slide. Certainly, many have suggested President Bush would have benefited from some juiced up spin control — but how much is too much? Will ObamaWorld’s propaganda machine work when the honeymoon is over?
The report reveals that Obama has created a campaign-style war room to spin everything from health care to women’s basketball. In campaigns, war rooms are funded by donors — in this case the donors are American taxpayers.
Coming soon from ObamaWorld — a carefully orchestrated series of health care town halls where questions will be filtered, camera angles will be directed and theatrical lighting carefully staged. If all this sounds to you like an infomercial, that’s because it is! Calling all celebrities — ObamaWorld wants you! They’ve already enlisted Ashton Kutcher to pitch HIV outreach (link http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0609/24344.html). Who might be enlisted to help pitch health care — is the ShamWow guy available? (After all, government run health care might prove to be a Sham-Wow of epic proportions).
Of course, we need a good, honest health care debate; not policy infotainment. And we already fund a ‘town hall’ forum for discussion and debate — it’s called Congress. In the end, is all this expensive message craft really necessary, especially at a time of economic recession? The answer is up to us – after all, we will foot the multi-million dollar production bill.

With so many allies in the media, this seems like an unnecessary expense. Maybe the money goes to keeping them on point and not straying.

The problem for them is… Us. New media and the 24/7 cable cycle makes managed events not only redundant but ridiculously and predictably so.
So, therein lies the rub for the Current Administration. They may be able to steanmroll us with bad legislation but selling it is a different matter all together…

Obama's image control is all about circumventing the Congress and the Constitution. It is why he has hired/appointed all of these Czars, if controls the message, he controls the debate. Every time Comrade Obama speaks, he reminds me of all those infomercials where it starts out in a dire situation and only the product being peddled will save your life. I will say this, however: it was only secondarily the job of the press to hold Biden accountable for the stupid crap he said during the V.P. debate. It was primarily Sarah Palin's job… because, IT WAS A DEBATE. She was his opponent. And she gave him a pass.
I like Palin well enough, and I will vote for her if she runs again. But she was not well prepared for the last campaign.

I actually do not care how much Obama tries to flood the airwaves with his garbage because I think he is just hastening his downfall. The core of his believers will never tire of him and will blindly accept whatever the White House spews; however, a growing majority of Americans will come to see Obama for the fraud he is and the more he tries to control his message, the quicker people will turn on him. I think the polls are beginning to show this.

I've come to think that there really is no such person as Barack Obama. It's a digital simulation of a human being, sort of like the lead character in that Al Pacino movie. Even the gaffes and hesitations remind me of Max Headroom. Just imperfect enough to appear to be real. One day, he'll appear in two different places in the world at the same time, and somebody will finally notice that he's either a fake, or he truly is the messiah who can defy the laws of physics.

Ever since the President won Iowa and his campaign really took off, I've noticed it was much more akin to a Hollywood, block buster, PR blitz, that a standard election campaign.
It seems like he had this giant team with one goal, to make every appearance as picture perfect as a movie scene. Every angle, every hair, every suit, every facial look, every question asked, every person he met, everything was planned down to the most minute detail. I felt almost as if I were being manipulated the way product placements are sneaked into movies and TV shows.
I've half wondered if he wasn't a product of some outfit like Dream Works. It's all just too perfect. Bordering on creepy.

I agree with you buzzyboop. I was amazed that for years most discussion programs featured a moderator (most often siding with the left), with two left-winger guests, and one conservative. Most discussions, of course, were 3 against 1 — that is until Fox News came along. The very first time I was exposed to Fox, I was blown away. Fair and Balanced? You betcha!

For voters such as myself, the most disturbing thing about Obama was how little we knew about him when he was elected. The handbook for everyone trying to understand both the nature and tactics of Obamania is, for me, Eric Hoffer's masterly "The True Believer." Early in the book Hoffer writes, "For men to plunge headlong into an undertaking of vast change, they must be intensely discontented but not destitute, and they must have the feeling that by the possession of some potent doctrine, infallible leader or some new technique they have access to a source of irresistible power…" I would argue that the Obamites (who are cetainly true believers) see "irresistable power" in modern communications technology. Expanding control of this power through war-room tactics is absolutely essential particularly when it involves the demonization of the administration's enemies. To quote Hoffer again, "Mass movements can ris and spread without belief in a God but never without belief in a devil. Usually the strength of a mass movement is propotionate to the vividness and tangibility of it's devil."
