Lack of Self-Awareness & the Oscar Speech Impediment — A Look Back
by Joseph LindseyI have yet to see a show business person give the acceptance speech they should at the Oscars. Instead, some turn the moment into a narcissistic stunt of protest, global outrage or badge of honor for whatever social injustice they have chosen that year. Rarely do they get it right.
Peachiness is nothing new to Oscar; it has been going on as far back as when those in Tinseltown hid in a Red closet while whispering “Government borscht for all.” The only thing that’s changed is the lack of awareness the winners have to the people who pay for their product, the product being they and their films, and the level of daftness that some accepting the award go to in an effort to feel more powerful than the money and fame they already have. Speaking out can be a good thing, especially when the speakers motive is to lift the awareness of all. Yet in Hollywood, a self-important attitude is hard for most to drop, as is the party line.

Last year, Sean Penn, a man with numerous felony charges including charges of violence against woman, and one who panders to tyrants the world over, preached to Americans after his win of the horrible and hateful state of mind that has fallen upon those who do not see the world as he does. The people of California came to their decision on gay marriage freely by vote, twice. Nevertheless, to Sean Penn the will of the people is only ever served when it slants in his favor or gives way to a photo op of him in a New Orleans boat shotgun in hand. Even his recent Haiti trip ultimately became just a reason for him to have face time on Larry King while hitting “Wiffle Ball” questions out of the park in the hopes of improving his public image, which is limited.
More often winners become so emotional that they lose it on stage like a Springer Spaniel wetting the carpet of its Masters home. Then becoming unable to articulate an awareness needed to give an educated speech in regards to the character they portrayed and how that role may be transferred to a larger audience for greater exposure. The speech they should have given gets lost in the moment of the self.
Case in point, Julia Roberts and Halle Berry
Julia Roberts won Best Actress for playing a strong, tough, stubborn, sexy mother who as a legal clerk took on a corrupt system and won. Yet in Miss Roberts acceptance speech, she failed to thank the very woman who made her Oscar possible, Erin Brockovich. Rather than give a focused acceptance speech empowering young woman to go into the world and become something powerful, (So long as they don’t become Conservative women from Alaska of course.) she giggled like a hyena that’d been poked by a canister of helium set aside for a Macy’s day float. She blathered on about how great she felt to be up on stage, how she never wanted to get down from the stage and how pretty her dress was. She then thanked her boyfriend of the month, her agents, the mountains, the forest, the rain, the sun and all the other geniuses disguised as Hollywood nature. All while forgetting the possibility of the moment, a chance to empower all women with her film.

Interracial discrimination takes place inside the black community in regards to shade of skin color. Many in the black community openly cried foul that Halle Berry was too light skinned to be the first black woman to win an Oscar for Best Actress. Miss Berry never saw the struggles that single black mothers living in this country see every day, but make no mistake, in today’s culture she is seen as a black woman.
Yet Miss Berry, looking as if she’d just come from a Pakistani interrogation room at the announcement of her name, took the stage unable to seize the gravity of her win and blew her chance to make a thoughtful speech about what it’s like to be a black woman of any shade in the world, not just Hollywood. Instead she glazed over the subject with “And now the door is open for all black actresses” as if the best thing for young black woman to do is head off to the crapshoot that is Hollywood. Miss Berry went on to thank Warren Betty, Spike Lee, her agent, manager, her mother, her future ex-husband and on, and on, all while saline flowed from her eyes, snot leaped from her nostrils like bungee jumpers and facial tics took hold suggesting that the Pakistani electrodes where still clipped on and the voltage was on high.
Bush Derangement Syndrome Infects Oscar 2003
Michael Moore is a man who could benefit from Michelle Obama’s war on childhood obesity. Because he is not only fat, but also because he lives in a constant state of infancy making up stories and presenting them to the public as fact like the boy who cried wolf.

Therefore, it came as no surprise when the bariatric blob took hold of his Oscar and was the first to expose “Bush Derangement Syndrome.” He invited his fellow documentary nominees on the stage and said, “I’ve invited my fellow documentary nominees on the stage with us. They are here in solidarity with me because we like nonfiction. We like nonfiction and we live in fictitious times. We live in the time when we have fictitious election results that elect a fictitious president. We live in a time where we have a man sending us to war for fictitious reasons, whether it is the fiction of duct tape or the fiction of orange alerts. We are against this war, Mr. Bush. Shame on you, Mr. Bush. Shame on you. And any time that you have the Pope and the Dixie Chicks against you, your time is up.”
Choosing to come off as just another elitist slob patting himself on the back while giving a lefty hand job the attending crowd, Michelle Moore wasted an opportunity to say something intelligent and though provoking for all to ponder. The show business people in the audience cheered his ridiculous statement and the teamster back stage booed into off stage microphones.
That same night the visiting aliens (Sorry, the undocumented performers.) couldn’t help getting into the act when the “Shark jumping” Bono, having taken his own temperature with his head and finding a slight fever of Bush Derangement Syndrome sang his two cents.
In a veiled protest against the war, which went unreported, Bono, sang “The Hands that Built America” from Gangs of New York, changing two lines of the song:
It’s early fall, there is a cloud on the New York skyline,
Innocents across a yellow line.Became,
Late in the spring, yellow cloud on a desert skyline,
Some father’s son, is it his or is it mine.
I thank you for the poetic insight Bono, now go plant some potatoes and worry about your own country because your last CD sucked.

In addition, that night our neighbors to the south drop this bomb of wisdom on us via the Jewish-Mexican-American uprising when ‘Frida’ composer Elliot Goldenthal expressed his admiration for the not-currently-fighting-with-Iraq country of Mexico.
Elliot Goldenthal, clearly a “Mexican National,” failed to mention that the reason Mexico is not fighting with us, is that it is too busy fighting itself and that the only country they ever fought and defeated was France. Not the greatest bragging rights yet every year on May 5th we in the US feel the ridiculous need to have a margarita and fucking burrito.
In fairness, that same year the Motion Picture Academy allowed a short conservative rebuttal to any liberal-leaning statements made regarding the war in Iraq. In a press conference that Saturday, Academy President Frank Pierson announced that in fairness to the noble soldiers and “the people who fund our movies”, a Republican representative would be given “equal time” at the end of the ceremony to counterbalance any leftist remarks made by Oscar winners during the program.
Many members of the film community were greatly displeased by the announcement because it brought balance and fact to their Utopian mindset. No one displayed this better than the war historian and geopolitical analyst Renee Zellweger when she said, “I think it’s all a bunch of bull-honky. Winners should get to say whatever they want. I don’t like the war no matter what, and when Mr. Republican-pants gets up there to speak I’m just putting my fingers in my ears and going la-la-la-la-la!”
In the past when an Oscar winner had something to say, they did it with more creativity and insight by not making it about them. In Marlon Brando’s case, it was more imaginative and lasting than anything you will see today.
When Brando refused his Best Actor Award, instead choosing to stay home to eat cookies and milk on his rattan furniture, he sent Sacheen Littlefeather to the 1972 Academy Awards to say “Marlon Brando very regretfully cannot accept this very generous award. And the reason for this being is the treatment of American Indians today by the film industry.” If Sean Penn fancies himself as the A-hole Brando, then he should have taken a queue from Marlon and sent Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi to the stage with a Judge from San Francisco’s 9th Circuit Court of Appeal to accept his award.
Then there is George C. Scott, who went out of the box before there was a box, and informed the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences via telegram that he would reject a nomination as Best Actor for his portrayal of Gen. George S. Patton in Patton. Though he had tried before to withdraw from an Oscar race-for a Best Supporting Actor nod for 1960’s The Hustler — this time the 43-year-old actor declared that he would simply not accept.

George C Scott returned his Oscar for Patton, stating in a letter to the Academy that he didn’t feel himself to be in competition with other actors. However, also regarding this second rejection of the Academy Award, Scott famously said elsewhere, “The whole thing is a goddamn meat parade. I don’t want any part of it.” You will never hear that from a star today.
The speech that came closest to what an Oscar speech should be was Joe Pesci’s when he won for “Goodfellas.” It should be the framework for all Oscar victory speeches. Pesci stepped to the stage, graciously took the award and said, “I am humbled. Thank you.” Then walked off, unfortunately never to be heard from again.
Warren Beatty famously said, “The Golden Globes are fun. The Oscars are business.” In that sentiment can be found what an Oscar speech should really be. The truly crafted artist of the world know their place and how to maintain the mystery of their craft by being seen and heard on film and leaving the social passions of their heart to themselves.
Only a truly self-realized actor would know that the purpose of his Oscar award speech is to recognize that they and their film are products. That the podium is chance to promote that product to the world by simply plugging their movie to those who’ve yet to purchase the manufactured goods and to say thank you to those who did.
But don’t hold your breath hoping Hollywood will change its speech impediment and get the words out right. I can hear Will Smith now accepting his award for Best Actor at the 2014 Oscars for his portrayal of Barak Obama. He’ll talk of the shameful racist nature of the American people as he quotes the president by saying to Barack seated in the front row “You were so right Mr. President, it’s better to be a really good one term President than a bad two term President. Shame on you America, shame on you.”

Secon Paragraph: ??? Peachiness or Preachiness ??
Otherwise point perfect.
The thing about many actors is, it isn't just Oscar night. They're like this ALL THE TIME. Neurotic bundles of conflicting inferiority and superiority complexes who talk about make-believe with words like "generous" and "courageous." Most wouldn't recognize those virtues if they bit them in the hindquarters.
"Michelle Moore" XD Thanks Joseph, I feel the exact same way. Give a liberal a soapbox of any kind, and you'll have the usual un-American droning. Ah, for actors who behaved like Scott. Thanks!
Enjoyed the post; can't wait for more self-love and political grandstanding this year.
I just looked up Joe Pesci's speech on youtube, because I was intrigued to see it in action. He actually said "It's my privilege; thank you." But the point remains the same.
I know this is an Oscars post, but how about Ving Rhames/Jack Lemmon at the Golden Globes???
Thanks
Raising awareness of something worthwhile can be a good thing, but the level of one-sided political high handedness can actually end up hurting this effort. Case in point, Haiti was/is a worthwhile target for charitable donations. Gary Graham argued effectively at this very site for that cause. But one needs to sak, does a video of people such as Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts and others asking people to contribute make one more or less likely to make a contribution? I would argue the latter, for at the very least, when I see those people stumping for anything, I immediately mentally tune them out.
The Oscars the great self love fest. Where the mantra is, "That's Enough of Me talking About Me Now You Talk About Me".
I have not paid attention to the Oscars in years. It went from being a schmooze fest, with an opportunity to check out some cute fashion, to a socialist/progressive rally, where the winners are picked based upon their politics. And the fashion, now it is a contest who looks the most wierdest. Lady GaGa anyone.
That was a truly classly moment, wasn't it? It's too bad they both got slammed afterward for being racist.
Excellent article. You hit the proverbial nail on the head many times here. Thank you.
I am so sick of these self obsessed people that I rarely go to a movie anymore or even watch them for free on TV. Most of the drivel that comes out of Hollywood is sickening anyway with the constant sex, violence and preachiness as referenced in the article. I will not be watching the Oscars this year as usual and I have nothing but contempt for most actors anyway-they mostly can't act to begin with and can't stop preaching and trying to "educate" all the great unwashed little people, which is all the rest of us.
I never was a fan of Julia Roberts, but I really grew to dislike the witch when she said before a group of people "Republican comes between repugnant and reptile in the dictionary". You have to be a real brainiac to alienate half of your fanbase with just one remark . Needless to say, this witch has never gotten another penny of my money, but then I've only been to one of her crappy movies and I was dragged to that one by family anyway.
Sean Penn typifies the celebrity egos who chase global disasters to glorify themselves as big humanitarians.
Conservative Christians died in Haiti by helping the people day to day, before the quake, as they do 24/7 everywhere. The soup kitchen angels are the real heroes. What you do when no one is watching is the true test of character.
.
Instead of thanking herself for opening that once forbidden door to all black actresses, Ms. Berry should have been thanking those that had opened the door for her: Hattie McDaniel, Sidney Portier, Diana Ross, Dorothy Dandridge, etc. Instead, it was all about HER.
I would respect these airheads more if they would get up there and proclaim, "Hey, I deserved this! I worked my butt off in this movie! Finally! Some recognition!"
What cracks me up is that none of those tools knows a damn thing. They are not enlightened, they are wise to something everyone else is not. They spout their venomous opinions as if they were gospel.
I look at idiots like Julia Roberts and Michael "You Gonna Eat That??" Moore and laugh at their attempts at intelligence.
Renee Zellwieger?? Isn't she the one that looks like she has a small turd right under her nose all the time? Who cares what any of these snobs have to say??
I did really like Ving Rhames at the GG that year. I like Ving in general and feel he's underrated because he's often kind of typecast but that was very cool.

Wait a minute; "Sean Penn, a man with numerous felony charges including charges of violence against woman…a photo op of him in a New Orleans boat shotgun in hand."
So he's a felon in possession of a firearm …. yet he's not in jail? Also Lautenberg made you a "prohibited person" for even a misdemeanor domestic violence conviction.
It will be interesting when we're forced, by bankruptcy, to give California to the Chinese. Then all the idiots in Tinseltown will have a regime they can be proud of.
The Michael Moore speech was even more testament to how to take anything he says. He claims that to be a spontaneous, in the moment, event. No on all counts…he'd said the same speech verbatim the day before at the independent spirit awards…verbatim save "We're all here together" referring to the other Documentary nominees which was orchestrated ahead of time as well without many of their knowledge of what he was going to say…he's just not an honest person, period. So how his movies are still considered by some to be actual documentaries is mind-boggling.

Someone please post about Alec Baldwin….JERK….hosting the Oscars. UGH !
Nobody remembers his (public) child abuse ??
It's fine with me if Will Smith says all that, so long as he says "BOOM! Goes the dynamite!" again.

But seriously, some choice obnoxious/nutty Oscar speeches:
James Cameron: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJp7Wd6Af2A
Jack Palance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGxL5AFzzMY
Sean Penn (2004): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBgF6lJZsWM
Oh good Lord, thank you for saving me from ever wasting my time on a vacation in Hollywood.
They are like that all the time? How can you normal people stand it?
Both – the Hollyweird lefties preach fuzzy-headed platitudes that are the pits…
As some one who does donate regularly to charities, I would say no, it doesn't hurt, but I doubt it helps much either. When I'm eying up charities, I never waste my time looking into which celebrities support it, I look at how are they fixing the situation. Not just keeping a bad situation afloat, but how are they trying to solve it, and is it working.
If I had to guess, I'd say the people who are greatly influenced by celebrity endorsements of charities would more likely be the type to have bumper stickers and ribbons showing how much they care, with the occasional donation to the democratic party to help get the right people in office to "solve" problems.
Agreed!
I didn't see Moore's speech, I stopped watching the Oscars when I was like 13, and I realized the best movie, had almost nothing to do with "best" or "movie."
But I must ask, how on earth could they fit anyone else on the same stage as Moore? Aren't there building codes at these arenas?
Okay, JERK!
That did it for me as well; although when as the presenter of the Best Actor Oscar, she literally jumped on Denzel Washington and had to be part of his moment, I knew I would never watch her in a film again.
Here's my acceptance speech:
"Thank You. I have no political statements or endorsements to make this evening. Interestingly, the entertainment industry (actors and actresses in particular) are probably one of the most under-educated collectives in the country. Were I to ask for a show of hands as to how many actually possess a high school degree, I'm sure I would embarrass quite a few of you. Yet, that doesn't temper you efforts to preach, demand, and chastise your fan base. Of course, the film goers do the same to you. Have you checked the box office receipts when you send your…influence out there? Again, thanks for this award. It's always nice to win the biggest schlong at a circle jerk."
Cheers,
The Worm
It blows my mind to realize that this dreadfully written piece was done by a screenwriter. The spelling, the syntax, the grammatical errors, and the sloppy proofreading and editing really take away from any points the author is attempting to make. It reads like a bad translation from some other language.
And for the record, Brando's tacky stunt is probably what started a lot of this whole "acceptance speech as time to make a stupid political statement" movement in the first place. "Sasheen Littlefeather" wasn't even real, it was a part played by an actress and Playboy model named Marie Cruz. The whole fiasco was immediately condemned as a cheap, tasteless trick by most people outside of Hollywood.
The celeb double standard is very strong now. That is why Robert Downey Jr can have NUMEROUS drug possession charges, not see one day in jail and reinvent his career. Celebs get repeated DUIs and again not see one day in jail and not lose their license. Welcome to Hollywood, check your baggage and dignity at the door.
Downey did spend time in jail – just to set the record straight. But I DO agree with all your words, it's a culture unlike anything else out in the land of wierdness – they live in a bubble and never get a taste of the real world. The speechs make me sick and only those void of a brain cell would buy into anything the likes of penn or moore have to say.
He is a pig through and through – he is reason enough not to watch the bubble of insanity.
Even Katherine Hepburn, who was liberal, knew the oscars were nothing more than self-congratulating. One year she wore a pants-suit she made herself. When asked about it she said you could not bring herself to wear a gown and thousand dollar jewelry (it was the 30's) when americans couldn't even put food on their table. Wish more actresses were like her now !!!!!
No offense, but Jack Palanc's acceptance speech was really funny, especially informing the membership that he ***** bigger than Billy Crystal!
Or all of those one-arm puch-up and its utlity in post-Oscar carnal activities!
Or how Billy Crystal milked Palance's speech throughout the evening's festivities!
No, wait! It was pretty nutty.
I didn't know that Renee Zellweger did that. Well, you know what? Anytime a movie of hers or Sean Penn's or Julia Roberts' or anyone else who wants to be political comes out, I'll save my money and stay home, or I'll see something else. That is my symbolic way of putting my fingers in my ears and going la-la-la-la.
I would love to see all of these self-congratulating award shoes simply go away, or at least, not be televised because the ratings don't make it worth it for anyone to sponser them. I'm sick of these idiots who think they are so smart simply because they are good liars–which is what acting is. They make tons of money and I enjoy many of their performances. I just wish they'd shut their mouths when it comes to politics.
I would say if one is going to give, give to the Red Cross or some other reputable agency. When George Cloony and friends raised umpteen millions of dollars for Katrina, no one could account for where the money went and, as far as I know, that is still true to this day. O'Reilly took Cloony to task for sponsoring the fund-raising event but not taking responsibility for ensuring the funds went where they were needed. If Cloony had said everything went to the Red Cross, etc., he would have been off the hook. Fact is, he didn't know where them money went. In answer to the question, I am more inclined to NOT donate when these professional liars ask me to.
Is Obama up for an Academy Award this year? Just wondering since he won a Nobel Prize without actually doing anything.
Edward, while I agree with your statement that Brando's action was a "tacky stunt," your facts are off. Here is an excerpt from Sacheen Littlefeather's own website: "Contrary to misinformation which has been published on the internet, Sacheen Littlefeather is indeed of true Native American Indian descent. Sacheen was born Marie Cruz in Salinas, California. Her mother is French-German-Dutch, and her father was from the White Mountain Apache and Yaqui tribes from Arizona. "Cruz" is her father's recognized tribe name. Sacheen took the name "Sacheen Littlefeather" after high school to reflect her natural heritage. She is not a "Mexican actress" as Roger Ebert incorrectly reported.
Joe S., Hollywood Native here:
MY (future) OSCAR SPEECH: I'd like to thank the American people, it's you ticket buyers who make this all possible- I respect you as a nation of individuals endowed with God-given rights and aspirations and my work illustrates this philosophy.
- BUT I NOW MUST REFUSE THIS OSCAR Because of my moral opposition to the Hypocrisy of this Industry and those who publicly represent it.
No one in this room is even close to being middle class and you have nothing but contempt for this giant swath of your audience, and many of you claim to be on the side love poor people, and Blacks and Hispanics, as long as they don't hang out near your house in Malibu. Please, check around to see how many such "underdogs" are represented in this room right now.
Also, I protest the Hypocrisy of the people in this room who make Millions of dollars a year, working only a couple months out of that year, yet you resent a small business owner who works 12 hour days/50 weeks out of 52 who makes 100 thousand annually- you think he needs to pay double the taxes he currently does. And you people here should be ashamed of exploiting college student's who labor for free for you as "interns" while you spend thousands of dollars a week on cocaine (or Obama fundraiser tickets).
I also protest the Pro-Labor Union hypocrites in this room- You mail millions of dollars to the Democratic Party yet you take every chance you get to send your productions outside of California- so you don't have to abide by this Blue State's tough labor laws and you don't have to pay Union wages to the Below-The-Line workers on your set.
…it was a plum opportunity…
"Knock, Knock"…."Who's There?"….."Apple"…."Apple Who?"
"Knock Knock"…."Who's There?"…."Apple"…."Apple Who?"
"Knock Knock"…."Who's There?"…."Orange"…."Orange Who?"….."Orange you glad I didn't say Apple?"
ge can say that all he likes and they can give BO the fron row center with all the trimmings.. as long as he really IS a one termer at that speech.
" It's always nice to win the biggest schlong at a circle jerk."
Which would account for what that statue really looks like.
Second Paragraph: ??? Peachiness or Preachiness ??
there you go, comparing apples and oranges again…
I expect you are right on in that assessment
I'm grapeful for your response…
I couldn't agree with you more. A good take on the Berry Oscar acceptance was given by Ann Coulter. Although Halle has some strong from Julia Roberts, she was the worst.
Doesn't matter who hosts this narcissitic lovefest, I won't watch it either way.
A liberal was different in Hepburn's day than they are now.
Who is the women presenter next to Roger Moore in the photo giving the Oscar to Sacheen Littlefeather? The look on both of their faces is priceless.
quite fruitful indeed.
And just to show how great an actor Mr. Scott was: the year after he refused the Oscar for "Patton" (at last check, it sits in the Patton Museum in Chiriaco Summit, CA), he was nominated for Best Actor for "The Hospital".
Sorry, Ms. Roberts: "Republican" comes before "repugnant" in the dictionary (shows the calibre of her English skills, doesn't it?) But "Democrat" is located between "demented" and "demonic".
Question: How do you spot America’s dumbest politicians?

One of the most hilarious Oscar commentaries I've ever read was written by Ann Coulter the year Hallie Berry won and Julia Roberts made an ass out of herself (again) presenting to Denzel Washington. I think it was called: "I Love Black People Too, Julia!!" You should run a reprint of it.
Gentle Readers,
NOT TRUE: Mexico has not only defeated France, but Spain in it's war for Independence, the proxy forces of Imperial Germany in 1914 and drubbed the Guatemalans pretty good.
However, the Guatemalans have gained their independence.

I made a point to single out Actors and Actresses in reference to the high school degree thing. And, I think a show of hands at the Oscars would show a significant education deficiency in that regard. True, a degree doesn't necessarily reflect intelligence (or motivation…for that matter). But, when I witness example after example of idiocy through comments, and actions from the "talent" one can't help coming up with a hypothesis suggesting that there is a severe lack of rational thinking. There is a certainly a disproportional self-importance factor at play. I only need refer back to the last presidential election and the two page political analysis provided by high school drop-out Lindsay Lohan and published by ABC News.
Penn in New Orleans, a brief synopsis.
Travels to the city
Stops of on the way to by a small aluminum jon boat and likely pays 10+ times its value to some dumb coonass on the bayou.
Overloads the boat with photographer, videographer and gear to get photos of him "rescuing" people 50 feet from dry streets walking in 2 feet of water.
In the meantime, hundreds of conservative boat owners are denied access to New Orleans by governor Blank Zero (Dem) because they did not have proper training.
Penn = Dumb Duuuuude
those who believe in Penn = IQ below 50
True, having a degree doesn't make you smart, but I think you'd be very wrong to assume the Oscar audience isn't educated. In fact, in addition to the technicians/writers, most of whom had to attend some college/grad/film school, I'd bet most of the actors finished high school, and even more graduated college. Second, why should someone be embarrassed for reaching the height of their profession without a degree? It'd make me rather smug, actually.
I agree with your premise, but dude, you need a pruf reeeeder BAD! An editor would be nice, too.
Penn is the very definition of a DOUCHEBAG. And a painfully stupid one at that
Never heard of after Goodfellas? Someone is looking to get a (very nice) pen in their neck.
(otherwise, nice article!)
I've gotta say, for all that text, the author said very little. And what he did say was written quite poorly.
THIS JUST IN: Movie stars are self-centered, self-important twits. Film at 11.
I think it's kind of hilarious how you frequently hear from conservatives how famous people should just their mouths about politics and social causes and "do their jobs," because they aren't qualified to be anything other than actors, singers etc… Yet here you write an article criticizing them for not, in your opinion, taking advantage of a deeply personal and joyous moment to speak out about whatever it is YOU think should be most important to them.
To me, when an actor jumps on stage to win an Oscar with a pre-written speech in hand, it screams to me: "Hello, I am so amazing, I knew I was going to win, and here is an emotion free speech about (insert cause here) because I'm so important that my opinion on the matter is golden." I much prefer emotional, genuine hysterics.
That was supposed to read "just shut their mouths."
Referring to Sean Penn as the A-hole Brando strikes me as a tad redundant. Brando (Greatest Actor of the 20th Century) was a pretty big jerk himself. Insightful, yes. But incredibly childish. Sean Penn is a very compelling actor and its too bad he behaves like such a a tempermental douche. Thankfully I'm a huge fan of Keifer Sutherland (mean drunk and he is drunk often) and I'm used to overlooking a mans flaws to appreciate his talents.
well aint that just peachy…
This guy is such an idiot.
The woman on the stage with Roger Moore, I think it's Liv Ullman. The look on her face is WTF? Where is she now?
I guess the constitution allows them to be as shallow as it allows you to be ignorant

I really don't wish harm to anyone, except of course terrorists, rapists, child molesters, etc. But if I ever read that Sean Penn got ran over by an 18-wheeler I can't say for sure if I'd laugh or not.
Talk about self-congratulating. Do you post any comments critical of yourself and this inane viewpoint? Are you going to be as critical of Charlton Heston for espousing his views whenever he gets the chance? Because like it or not, he's pushing a cause, just like these other actors. And by the way, just because someone is an actor doesn't mean they no longer get to participate in the political process. Making their points wherever they get the chance to is far less dishonorable than CEOs hiding behind corporations making major dollar donations to their self serving causes. You don't often see an actor get up there and talk about some legilation that will only benefit them. You can disagree with them, but calling them names is not only childish, but exhibits a mind short on intelligence and imagination. And finally, do you have no sense of legacy? Is this piece something you'll show proudly to your grandchildren, saying "I wrote that"? Read up on the Elements of Style before you pollute the web again with your remarkably poor writing skills.
So was a conservative…

and then there are those that try to make their fame TALKING about those horrible celebrities….The right would have nothing to talk about if it wasn't for them. BTW your comment about voting for gay marriage..same thing for womens or blacks right to vote or be 'people'…sometimes a vote isn't the right way for progress. Just b/c a lot of people don't like something doesn't make it a bad thing.
Top Bananas in the bunch.
That's the Cherry on top of the sundae ! Bravo !
They are entertainers people. they have no better or worse opinions then you or I. Some are crazy and some are sane. All of them are in the business of getting you to pay money to watch them work. Their opinions only start to matter when you write self serving articles about them like this one. if you don't like them then do what MTB says
"Anytime a movie of hers or Sean Penn's or Julia Roberts' or anyone else who wants to be political comes out, I'll save my money and stay home," People like Mr. Lindsey who feel the need to tell other people what they should or should not say at an awards show for an award they won are just making it worse. Everyone make up their own opinions and stop worrying about what some celebrity thinks or says. You, Mr. Lindsey are as bad or worse then those you attack
Back in the day there were what was such a thing described as a "classic liberal," who shared many beliefs that conservatives do today. Quite unlike todays liberal, who believe in big government and speech codes among other things.
Loving all these vows to stay away from the movie theaters. Good! Fewer racist rednecks to deal with!
I agree, U2's last CD did suck, big time.
Thanks Joseph for the great article.
I make it a point not to support the Academy Awards because of their out of touch ideas on life in a regular person's world. These people are brainwashed from the time they sell there mother down the river for that special part and
their do anything attitude to be the shinning stars of Hollywood.
I see Fox news promoting the awards and smile at the double standard.
[...] The lack of great acceptance speeches at the Academy Awards is nothing new — Joseph Lindsay has posted an excellent article on that here. [...]
