Dave Matthews’ Politics of Racial Paranoia
by Joseph Lindsey“Honky,” “cracker,” “whitey,” “spot,” “the white guy” and “my white nigga” are a few of the words and phrases used to describe me by fellow co-workers (along with a few white jokes told to my face on the set of a film) I co-starred in called “Caught Up” in 1998. I was in fact the only principal white actor on a set dominated by black actors, a black director, a black writer and a predominantly black crew. Not once did I think I was being treated in a racist manor. I just felt it was okay for blacks to describe me this way having been led to believe that I owed them this bit of racial jabbing because I, as a white individual, had something to do with the racism they’d experienced throughout their lives.

If the tables had been turned and a predominantly white cast and crew used such racially charged language to describe a black cast member, the Screen Actors Guild would have invaded that production and we would have seen headlines in the media “Racist Cast and Crew, Film Shut Down By SAG.”
In that film one of my scripted lines required that I use the word “nigger.” Before I shot the scene I pulled my fellow actor aside and assured him that this was not a word I took lightly and that I was aware of its historical implications towards blacks. He looked me over as if I were an alien and said “Give me a break, I don’t give shit, I’ve been a nigger all my life. I’m cool with it.” That response came to me as a mixed signal. Not one that said it was okay for me to use the word “nigger,” but one that said my efforts at trying to understand his side of race didn’t matter.
All us “white people” are now being told by the media, by former Presidents and now singer Dave Matthews that most whites have a negative racial element to their behavior, that we should monitor them and keep them in check, that our attitudes towards blacks should be sensitive. Okay, fair enough. However, lots of us so called “white people” live our lives with a sense of racial sensitivity and have for some time.
What could be helpful in having a racial dialogue would be specific feedback from the black community on what more they want us to do when it comes to understanding racism as they see it. That would be a more constructive approach to the topic than simply finger-pointing at “White America” as Dave Matthews did when he recently said this:
“Of course it is! I found there’s a fairly blatant racism in America that’s already there, and I don’t think I noticed it when I lived here as a kid. But when I went back to South Africa, and then it’s sort of thrust in your face, and then came back here — I just see it everywhere. There’s a good population of people in this country that are terrified of the president only because he’s black, even if they don’t say it. And I think a lot of them, behind closed doors, do say it.
“Maybe I’m paranoid about it, but I don’t think someone who disagreed as strongly as they do with Obama — if it was Clinton — would have stood up and screamed at him during his speech. (Shakes his head) I don’t think so.”
Where is Dave Matthews meeting these “blatant racist Americans?” Is it amongst his adoring fans, or is this just happening inside his liberal head brought on by the white guilt he cultivated living in South Africa? We disagreed with Clinton over some of his policies, we also scream at him for lying to us when we discovered he’d used the Oval Office as his own private porn booth/cigar factory.
When are those in the black community and its leaders going to address the fact that the vast majority of “white people” in this country try to do what’s right when it comes to race, that when we disagree with it doesn’t mean it has something to do with the color of someone’s skin, but may have to do with the content of the individuals character or views?
It’s time self-hating whites with big bullhorns like Jimmy Carter and Dave Matthews stop pointing the finger and start asking questions of the black community about what they’re doing to put a balanced eye on the topic, because if they are, I can’t see it.

"Where is Dave Matthews meeting these “blatant racist Americans?”
Kind of makes one wonder what type of people ol' Dave is hanging out with, doesn't it. I myself do not know one person who makes racist remarks etc. Dave needs to change his circle of "friends".
Who is Dave Matthews? a has-been.
I will say I agree with you but what is a "racist manor"? A plantation? Come on cracker-ass cracker!
I knew there was a reason I don't listen to Dave Matthews music.
The race card is perpetual. Its usefulness never fades. As long as it works, it will be played.
It's simply a way to shame dissent into silence. Anyone who opposes the "progressive" agenda is tagged as a racist, and it will always be so. After all: “YOU’RE SURELY A RACIST, IF…” at http://firebreathingchristian.wordpress.com/2009/...
LOL! Upding!
I missed that when I read the piece, but laughed ice water through my nose at your comment (For the record, 34 degree H2O through the nose hurts more than you'd expect).
You mean there really is a musician named Dave Matthews? I always thought that there was no such thing as the "Dave Matthews Band" but only "Dave Matthews Cover Bands." Son of a gun! You really do learn something new every day.
"Look up in the sky!
It's a bird!
It's a plane!
It's Superman!"
SPLORK!
Oh wait, it's just Dave dropping another turd.
I oftentimes wonder who's more at fault, the ignorant entertainer who says incredibly stupid things, or the ignorant "journalist" who doesn't follow up such a statement with "Did you see the same racism when the liberals booed Bush at the 2005 State of the Union address?" Just once, I would love to see the expression on one of these imbecile's faces if they walked into a "friendly" interview and were asked to think. I imagine it would provide more laughs than a thousand Will Ferrell Bush Monologues.
Puleaze, DM is just a dirty hippy! Too bad he didn't stay in South Africa; the only thing worse than your "music" is when you open your noise maker and make some stupid ass comment such as the one in this article. Crawl back into your hole and dump another load of turds from your bus into the river, you nasty hippy.
He's a "never was."
Thank you Dave Matthews! It's always nice to hear from an elightened "dumb ass" in the entertainment field.
I had a story I was going to write that I thought would be good about two slaves, one set in the 1850's who risked his life on the Underground Railroad to be free and his descendant who bobs his head to Bone Thugs n Harmony "It's the first of the month, so cash your check and get up." It was about how one man risked his life to get freedom from the state and how his descendant won't do anything to get free from the state. The only problem with it, I'm white. I wrote a chapter and then deleted it after everyone started calling Obama's critics racist. I didn't want the aggravation. The race card is effective even with those who aren't being called racist.
Instead, I'll just write a story about a white kid being the victim of racism by a small group of kids in an all black school, mostly what happened to me as a kid. That way, reality will at least help diminish the charges of racism they will throw at me.
God love my sister and brother-in-law, but I just CAN'T get why they and others love this guys music. It is without a doubt, to my ears anyway, the dullest and most banal music I have ever heard!
That being said, this reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from the book "Ball Four" about a ballplayer being sent down to the minors once again, "I never thought I was a bad ballplayer, but they're making a believer out of me." Although for the life of me I can't consciously dislike anyone upon appearance color or otherwise, I could replace the words "bad ballplayer," with "racist," and that may apply to me and others.
The race card has been so overplayed, it is becoming meaningless. If people are terrified of Obama it is for the incredible leftist policies he is trying to pursue. If one wants to attach ANY racial significance at all, some people may be terrified not BECAUSE he is black, but rather that he may in fact be a racist himself looking for payback (see the famous cop statement, 11 years attendance at black liberation theology church, etc.)
Kowabunga Dude!!!!!!!
I wonder what Dave Matthews has to say about the racist behavior of individuals who match him in thought that was displayed against Michael Steele and Condi Rice and Clarence Thomas. Not to mention that the President himself said that he didn't believe racism played a huge role in the criticism. Kevin Jackson has a few articles on the idiocy of even attempting to speak for the the "po' black." http://theblacksphere.blogspot.com/2009/09/carter...
He must be a racist to hang out with so many racists.
I would usually have to skip ahead to find the one song on each album that's worth listening to. But I don't buy his albums. 'Human kazoo' was a great label for him.
It's really easy to boycott him.
I would say that lots of us so-called "white people" live our lives with a sense of racial indifference. Oh sure we notice someone's skin pigmentation, in the same sense that we may notice their height, weight, or hair color. But judgments about the person aren't made upon that basis. In fact some of us, well maybe I am the only one, wonder why so many are willing to be identified by a chance of genetics. I can't converse with "the black community", although I could converse with black individuals. My guess is I would get as many answers about the state of racism in America as individuals with whom I spoke.
The music business is running scared and the fading performers jump on the bandwagon to seem relevant. Pathetic.
You know full well that never happened. It could not happen. You are a racist.
As to your story, the current correct thinking is that the modern descendent deserves the reparations denied his ancestor; He must collect a check from the State which in turn must seize the funds from whites. The passé white, Eurocentric/black African work ethic does not apply. In fact, any attempt to apply it would be a step backward and racist. Any black Americans who disagree are also racist. There is no point in replying to this post as the first symptom of racism is denial.
In the future, your descendents will understand the depths of your racism and will continue to apologize.
Dave Mathews just proves you can be an a##h*L* no matter what your race is.
haha
Hmmmm, makes me wonder. When was he in my town taking surveys on blatant racism? I don't recall him asking me my opinion. And I'm pretty sure if he stopped by when I was out, my wife would have mentioned it. (Several dozen times, she's quite a talker!)
One more name added to my list of people who I will never allow to pollute my existence. It's getting to be quite long these days.
Dave Matthews is no different than the Charlottesville lemmings that obviously shaped his racist attitude. Let me tell you… as a 22 year resident of this area, Charlottesville folks fancy themselves as enlightened, accepting of all views, blah, blah, blah. They are, in fact, rude, self-righteous, judgemental…Don't believe it? Put on a suit and take a walk on our downtown mall some Friday evening…you WILL believe!!!
MY idea of real racial equality is for blacks to be as concerned about not degrading the white race as they demand the white race be about blacks. Right now, it not only is NOT equal – it's so one-sided that black racists today are what white racists were yesterday. The color has changed but the hate is the same.
And I think a lot of them, behind closed doors, do say it."
–Dave Matthews
Must be some kind of super-power "we non-celeb white folk" don't have.
Matthews moronic comments are enough to make me believe he wasn't acting when he played a mentally-handicapped savant on a "House" episode a couple of years ago. His comments would also be enough for me, to quote Greg Gutfield, "to boycott his music if I had ever listened to it."
Apparently, the Chicago River isn't the only place Matthews ejects crap upon; but in that case, at least, it came from his trailer's portable potty and not from his mouth.
Reality and truth will always work with those who are intellectually honest and true.
But for those committed to the "progressive" cause…I'm afraid that their enthusiasm for using the race card to silence dissent will never be diminished. Reality as we understand it simply doesn't matter to them.
I do encourage you to keep right on writing, Brian! Don't let their whining bother you one little bit.
It is better to remain silent and have everyone think you're an idiot than to speak and remove all doubt.
Consider my doubt removed…..
Hmm…. I am more apt to "judge" a person based on how they are dressed or whether they know how to use a belt properly than their skin color… :/ I'm sorry but if you are too stupid to wear your clothing as they should be worn (ie not backwards or down to your knees) than I will consider you stupid… I don't care if it's fashion… looking like an idiot is never fashionable..
Dave Matthews is just another closet racist projecting onto others… :/
I think if I were a racist a good third of my friends would tell me so…
With your comment I kinda hope for a Conservative President that happens to be a black man… so we can call all the liberals racists… :/ eh… oh well, doesn't matter because we all know they are anyway…
Moe once said to Curly, "Every time you open your mouth you weaken the nation!"…
so it goes with the soaring intellect of Dave (Curly?) Matthews. Like all liberal white apologistas pull the string and voila! here comes the bromide. In this particular instance it's the old sop of 'racist America'- as if racist everywhere else doesn't exist- and yes, it is tired.
This lot needs a new playbook. Leaning on Uncle Joe or Papa Fidel or Chairman Mao is SO yesterday…
The thing about the left is they like to label people. There is no reasoning with this mentality. Liberalism is a psychosis. There is a very miniscule segment of the population that is racist, and alot of those folks are from a generation that was taught that was right (Robert Byrd, take that leftys). That way of thinking is all but gone in this generation. Pretty soon Jessie and Al will have no one to hustle, and that is what I call progress.
…dave matthews left South Africa rather than serve in the South African army and be forced to bear arms for a government still operating under the system of aparthied. the fact that you call him a racist is simply a display of your own ignorance. Have you never said anything in your life that you regret. The fact that this man is famous and constantly has people listening to what he says, and he says one dumb thing. go look in the mirror. how many dumb things have you said that no one heard….
When I was in High School I saw Dave Matthews in concert about 7 or 8 times.
One thing I really liked about his shows was the huge amount of diversity in the crowd. It was mostly either white dudes in tie-dyed shirts and birkenstocks or white dudes in polo shirts and plaid shorts.
I'm now a twenty something white guy. I've been hearing about racism since the day I could hear. The word 'racism' means very little to me. It has lost its meaning. People like Matthews and Carter have destroyed its meaning.
Watching people like that speak would almost be funny if it weren't so tragic that there are an astounding number of people who agree with them.
Is this supposed to be journalism? This is an excellent example of what separates journalists from "bloggers"
You mean another reason not to listen to him, besides the fact his music sucks? He is a race bating fool. That is two good reasons for me. But add to this the fact that his shows are as generic as you can get in "rock" music and that is reason number 3. So for Dave, 3 strikes and your out. Who besides spoiled college kids even listens to this tapioca pudding guy?
Dave Mathews, who cares…
Do tell?
The difference is that when he says something dumb, everyone gets to hear it. Not only that, but it's praised as some enlightened little nugget given to us by some superior intellect.
The guy plays in a band, he goes on Letterman occasionally. He knows not thing one about America and it's culture other than there is a segment that regards him as some sage advisor. Not coincidentally this is the same segment that thinks women with hairly armpits is a good thing…..
Look out, it might be Charles Gibson…..
I know people that make racist remarks, they are all liberal democrats that live north of the Mason/Dixon line too.
Would love to have a conservative black president. Would love to have a conservative Asian. Why on earth would I care what color he or she is???
I didn't mean it that way… and I agree with you wholeheartedly… Because I don't care what color they are either as long as they are true conservatives… but according to affermative action and white guilt society we are keeping the black man down… thus hating on a black man is racist (whoever hating on anyone else is less so).
Your first paragraph slayed me. So true.
To be a conservative in America is by definition to be sensitive to what you say. For decades everything we say is parsed and screened and filtered and dismembered by the ever so hyper vigilant left for any trace of racism. They have done this to the point, where now in order to claim we're racists, they like Dowd, have to say "they didn't say it, but that's what I heard."
It's a rigged game and only the most braindead lefty doesn't know it.
They've used the race card so much, it's becoming useless, especially now. The middle types who just accepted the lefty claims before, are now waking up, when they find the racist tag hung on them for thinking that Obama has gone too far. They are beginning to see the left lies about everything, when they never paid attention before, thinking they were not into left/right arguments.
well the left had to over reach, again.
and the independents are jumping ship so fast, it's in danger of flippin over the goodship SS Unicorn.
Totally! And I didn't mean to imply you care about color either. It's soooo sad, and I refuse to be baited by twisted leftists about race. Did you notice how quickly they all had their little racist talking points in order? Pathetic. So enlightened.
My personal experience, is the folks who spout off racial insults and slurs are either non affiliated, or democrats. Befoe the denials, I married into a democrat family, and while my wife is a gem or true quality, her cousins, aunts, grandparents,… never heard the N-bomb tossed with such abandon, till I was in a oom full of democrats. Republicans don't use the word, ever. Two generations of learning the same white lib who just said Micheal Jackson's a ———-, will without an inkling about the hypocrisy, go red in the face, if you were to say it.
Libs seem to think racism is a party platform, not a personal failing.
Cognitive dissonance however does seem to be a democrat party plank, as it's been a standard of theirs since the sixties.
My wife grew up in South Africa, and is white. The first half of her life she lived in Johannesburg. We met a black South African on our summer vacation, and he chatted us up for a long time. Growing up post Mandela, he thought South Africa had moved on from it's torrid past. Then, he came over here, and experienced America's racism.
His conclusion, and I quote: "South Africa is the most racist country on Earth." Blacks are in power there, and racism is nearly as insitutionalized as it was with Apartheid, only it's the Blacks doing the discriminating this time around.
If everyone would put away the race card, racism in America would die a natural death in one generation. This constant focus on people's differences does not improve the melting pot.
You have half the story correct, middle types are done with "lefty claims" but we are done with "righty claims" too. There's no jumping ship, we've been shipless for decades. If we could get the people playing the race-card and the people playing the there's-no-racism-card out of the media (and blogs), the rest of us could have constructive conversations.
I was at the march on Washington on 9/12… there were racists there looking for anyone to make them put down their signs. they were a small percent indeed and it is not fair to call us all in the march racists (which i don't think carter did)… but there were racists there. as a middle type I can spot the unfair accusations from the left and the abysmal denials on the right.
'The fact that this man is famous and constantly has people listening to what he says, and he says one dumb thing.'
huh?
So you acknowledge this is dumb. Do you think Dave will agree?
His tour bus dropped a load of them while driving over a river in Chicago as I recall. I used to joke that it was his "Eat Shit and Die Tour" .
Isn't this the guy whose tour bus dumped their septic tank, while crossing a bridge, onto a boat full of tourists below?
Only honkys can be racist. It's in their genes. They are born that way. Kinda like homosexuals.
And yes, some of my best friends are honkys.
I'll bet Dave Matthews and his band still take money from all those horrible racist. Hypocrit!
"how many dumb things have you said that no one heard…."
Zero, because when I'm alone I don't talk. I save that for when there's somebody else in the room to hear what I'm saying.
Maybe instead of investing in taxpayer (forcibly) supported pie-in-the-sky green energy, which will not lead to a net job creation, all these obscenely rich leftie celebutards should open up academies in the inner cities so the poor minorities will have a chance to escape the failed government education penal system. Or maybe they could invest in inner city businesses or trade schools to create jobs for minorities. But then again that would require that they actually risk their own money and possibly lose it. Nothing funnier than hearing about all the rich celebrities who lost millions investing with Madoff. They were looking for the easy, big pay off and they got punked.
Yeah, just who is it Dave is getting his input from? He hasnt spoken to a real, non fan American in 15 years—no way he's out among "us" and walking around—he doesnt want to be seen in public, when he's not performing nor toking in the tour bus with Willie Nelson at Farm Aid. The guy has proven his ignorance. Enough of the blame "whitey" stuff huh? Blacks are killing other Blacks at record numbers and no one speaks of it—its too easy to blame the rich, educated, employed White man who used to take on the guilt…No more Dave…tide has turned…go groove to yourself and your "cant dance to it" kind of getting stoned music.
Dave, don't the screendoor hit you in the ass on the way out of the USA
OH yeah, Dave is the Band who is going to perform at John Edwards rooftop marriage of his mistress when his present wife dies off of her lingering cancer. Nice to be mentioned in such company huh Dave? You agree to that with your Carolina buddy?…
His music is simpleton stuff…strum hard, sing a nonsensical line or note over an ever increasing volume of back up instruments—-stop, pause, babble something, repeat same steps—voila, a Dave Matthews original. Same same same…like a guy who just drank a bottle of wine tries to sing and realizes he's actually stoned on pot and babbles and mutterers over very loud acoustic music. Crowd does a Grateful Dead like, stand in place, discover the ozone kind of movement, flailing arms and head…
Repeat same sound and same steps for next song…
Floyd,
I think he meant to write "manner" not manor. Could be a Freudian slip, though. LOL!!!
Its almost like the Foxworthy routine " If yooooouuuuu [insert activity here] you might be a racist."

Dave Matthews, If Alan Keyes were the President, who would then be the racist?
Why can't people responding to Dave Matthews acknowledge that there's a lot of racism in the US? I'm white and I've observed it many times. Scientific studies show racial bias in controlled settings among whites and blacks. Just because you don't use the n-word doesn't mean you're not a racist. I know conservatives like to think racism ended in 1964 or so, but it isn't true. When someone says the race card is overplayed, I know they're a total tool. Thanks!
Who is Dave Mathews, and why should I care what he hinks?
The worst thing about Dave poop dropping onto our tourists and into our river is he then blamed to tour bus driver. Typical douche'!!!
Please, Jed, when discussing race try to avoid making sense. Sound reason scares the "race" folks. And I'm sure they could find a way to turn you into" the racist!" So be careful out there.
Yep! Poo-Poo Dave is what we call him here in Chicago.
Oh, a scientific study said so. It must be true. You better get some sleep, don't you have class in the morning?
Dave knows a couple black guys so he has to step up and confront racism. Plus, now the "brotha's" will be cool with the fact that they make only 3/5 of what the white guys in the band make.
How about a multi-racial female? That would throw the left into a sputtering tizzy!
This is because they are feeling sorry for themselves. They have finally realized that they made a mistake by voting Hussein into office and they are taking it out on us!
Bill Clinton is making accusations b/c we did not vote for Billary!
Dave Matthews, go figure, this guy dumped raw sewage into a Chicago River b/c he was rebelling. What an Idiot! Just throwing another tantrum.
Jimmy Carter, Is the worst President of the US to date. Who cares what he says!
Walter Mondale, another Idiot.
Left Wing Media Wackos like Janene Barfalo and Olby simply have a chemical imbalance b/c they are not dosing properly.
Dave Matthews: formulaic music, not-quite-an actor, truly a pin-head.
Can we all just get along?!
You obviously have never taken a cultural diversity class. If you had, you'd know that Black racism is JUST as bad as any other kind. Racism is racism, get it? Own your own guilt (earned or not), but don't try to pass it to others by calling them a tool.
Each time we hear charges of racism as an excuse to avoid legitimate criticism, it becomes more apparent that anyone using racism as a crutch is not "ready for prime time."
Dave Matthews sucks so bad that his own sister shot and successfully killed herself after hearing his first album. That's some powerful sucking.
No.
I agree completely Rick. This is just confirmation of what we already knew about this talentless hack.
Coop, you left out a word. Democrat. Thomas Sowell, Condoleeza Rice, or Walter Williams would make great president. Never let a Democrat be president. There's a slogan we can live with.
Yeah, Dave drops a lot of turds that magically end up in record stores and iTunes…I refer to them as "albums".
White kids in Delaware public schools are denied access to classes and restrooms for reporting being racially targeted for daily threats and assaults. I have it in writing when the district sent a letter home telling my son he could not go to his classes. They are not educating the african american kids and forcing white kids to be victims in order to keep test scores low and keep Title 1 money coming in. It isn't about teaching anymore, it is all about more money.
Its because he sucks really big time!
Ya, and idiots keep buying his shitty music and crappy concert tickets. Dave Mathews is one big load of shit. And he gives South Africans a bad name too.
As long as we don't have to listen to that shitty Dave Matthews music.
Liberals are insane. They are all anal retentive racist. They are the racist they see it everywhere. I grew up in a neighborhood were we all called each other names no matter what you were, skin color, religion, or what country your grandfather came from. We all got along, no one took it serious and all of us that have stayed in touch are still pals and I am going back to 1960 some even earlier. As an actor in Boston during the 70s I was in a lot of plays that we said everything to anyone. No one came up to me and warned me or I warned them a were using certain words. Hell, we were ACTING, we were playing a character. One of the best directors I work with was a buddy of mine who was black and he directed me in a gangster play between black gangsters and italian gangsters and I don't have to tell you what the dialogue was like. We all have a freaking blast doing this play. No one cared. As Dennis Prager once said there are two kinds of people in the world, the decent and the indecent and they come in all colors, sizes, races, creeds you name it. Somewhere as always the liberals tried to fix something that wasn't broken in my generation and all this hate and anger came out. Now at my age I have met a lot of conservatives of all colors and it is as if time as come full circle. None of us see color we see Americans that love this country and we all have the same belief in the same God and for our country. I don't see any anger in these gatherings just a lot of smiles and laughter. Kind of reminds me of those summers in the early 1960s.
a has been who sells 1,000,000 ticks a year and has a stream of #1 albums.
Dave who? Wasn't he a one semi-hit wonder before the state media saturated the radiowaves with the awful rap crap? I defy anyone to point to a Dallas area current hard rock station. If you live in the D/FW area, you better like the hip-hop crap or country with maybe old rock sprinkled every hour or so.
Wow, who knew? And she's a good shot too………………………..damn. Actually, I think her husband murdered her, and then commited suicide………………………………………………because of his shitty first album.
Oh Crap! You caught me! I'm a racist!
Now, as to this guy Obama's policies…
Sending back my vinyl copy of Dave's latest unopened. He's now on my "do not listen to" list along with Wilco.
Obama is black?
Are you guys really saying there aren't loads of racists Americans out there? Are you guys being serious??? I've lived in four countries, US for 6 years, UK for 6 years, Spain for 5 years and France for 7 years. The countries where I've observed the most racism were Spain and the United States. That's my point of view…but bashing this guy's music because, as a non-American, he's saying a lot of people are racists in the US is just stupid. Plus this guy has lived a large portion of his life in your country, he's just not embarrassed to speak out. Open up your history books!!!
