Al Sharpton and the Economics of False Outrage
by Joseph LindseyThe far-left are experts at placing people into boxes like a Microsoft spread sheet based on their sexual preference, skin color, religion or world views. And because of that, they are unable to see us as “All One.” The moment we do become “All One,” the game is over and their voting block is gone. These are people who, the moment you disagree with them on anything that has to do with one of their chosen imprisoned spreadsheet groups, call you a racist. People with this confined view wake up every morning looking for something in their day to offend them. Well, if you start your day out with that premise; guess what, you’ll find something offensive in your day.
Al Sharpton has made a rich living for decades waking up every morning and asking himself, “What’s offensive today that I can make a buck on?” Today what he found was a NY Post cartoon lampooning that crazy killer monkey from Stamford, Conn. A cartoon that was clearly comparing the act of creating an out of control stimulus package by a bunch of crazed politicians too busy playing with their poo to read the bill, to that of an escaped chimp terrorizing the citizens of its community and biting the hands that fed it.
I can see it now, Al rolling out of his goose down bed, thumbing through the local rags looking for a paycheck in the form of something he deems offensive. Well, he found it, and here’s what he saw in it from the spreadsheet box he’s lived his whole life in: Civil rights activist Al Sharpton called the cartoon “troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys.”
I don’t know about you, but when I see people who happen to be black, I don’t see what Al Sharpton sees. I usually see just another guy walking past me or seated in the car next to me. But then again, I’m not in the race baiting business like Al.
They always call him a Civil Rights Activist, huh? You’ve got to be kidding me. Remember Tawana Brawley and the innocent people she destroyed with the help of Al Sharpton? Well I lived through it in New York at the time and it was sad and criminal on Al’s part. And only a man who lives his life in the box his party has placed him in and with a resume like his could ever be treated seriously in a run for president. As a white male if I had my hand in some of the shit he’s spread around, I wouldn’t be given a chance at running for dog catcher.

The left has changed the definition of racist, hardly surprising, that's one of their favorite games, a.k.a racial preferences magically become "affirmative action." The left's new definition of racist is anyone who doesn't agree with them. I had one empty headed liberal lecture me that by definition a democrat can't be a racist.
To interpret the cartoon as innocuously as you understand it, at least 3 glaring layers have to be ignored as you dig and peel back to arrive at your conclusion. It reminds me of those magic eye puzzles where you had to concentrate on letting your eyes relax in order to spot the hidden image…the key being concentrate. I never had an easy time with them.
So…all these years…..the lefties were calling President Bush black!!!!
I should of seen it!
Milfordhaven –
Please elucidate.
Even Sharpton himself seems tired of it. His response was hardly genuine anger– more like, "Yea I guess I could be upset with this– some people could be upset with this– in a certain light. I could be persuaded not to be upset, that is, for a significant contribution to my foundation."
Unconscious thought-process at work:
1. Comparing white people to monkeys is harmless, and funny.
2. Comparing nonwhite people to monkeys is racist.
3. Attempting to point out the racism inherent in this racist rule-of-thumb is racist.
4. You guys are f'n racist!
In order to be offended by this, the first fact you have to ignore is that Obama didn't write the bill.
Which is what his MO has always been…
At first glance, it would seem that Sharpton thinks this is Obama in the cartoon. A closer look and it is clearly not Obama. Obama has larger ears.
I haven't heard a peep from Sharpton since BO was anointed, so if this cartoon is guilty of anything, it's that we have to hear from this racist rat again.
[...] Joel’s Blog put an intriguing blog post on Al Sharpton and the Economics of False OutrageHere’s a quick excerpt…see it now, Al rolling out of his goose down Bbed/B, thumbing through the … spread around, I wouldn’t be given a chance at running for Bdog/B [...]
Roy Innis, National Chairman of CORE, became one of my lifelong heroes when he decked Al Sharpton during a taping of The Morton Downey Jr. Show in 1988.
Did you see the episode of Boston Legal where Al Sharpton appeared as himself to act out the exact caricature of himself this article paints? Al is such a mercenary you can even pay him to assassinate his own character.
so, al sharpton has got his tracksuit all in a bunch again.
this is an nteresting new escalation of grievance. people have to make a decision to be offended by this. they have to deliberately misinterpret the cartoon. and then choose again to stay offended when the punchline is explained to them.
crash/attackcartoons
Doug,
Here's the video tape, Innis chumping Sharpton, ha.
==…Obama didn't write the bill.==
Yeah, but he signed it. He suggested the elements of it.
2 points:
1. I live in NY and Sharpton is a joke here. He's run for mayor many times and get nowhere because he's not at all a leader but an opportunist. So equating Sharpton with big city liberals is false because he is most certainly NOT one of us.
2. False outrage, huh? This is why no one takes you seriously anymore. You have the stones to complain about false outrage while the right drones on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on about nonsense like the "War on Christmas" and the reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine (which NO ONE is actually considering) and the sexual preferences of teletubbies and cartoon characters.
Please.
As far as I am concerned discrimination is an excuse for those who feel they deserve respect they haven't earned. They feel they deserve, no insist they be given the benefit of the doubt. These people wear their race, religion or sexual preference on their sleeves and demand and expect that people look past it. They take pride in those differences and allow themselves to be ruled or defined by them all the while using them as a crutch for their own failures. If you truly care what people think of you then don't pretend you don't care. Stop throwing your differences in our face and you won't find yourselves being ostracized. Stop insisting that society like you because of your differences and ask us to accept you despite your differences.
Ask us (society) nicely, as though our opinion matters and most will gladly oblige, but the moment you dare to insist or order us to do something you will find we are not so easily moved.
Gee and AG Holder says we can't have an honest talk about race? Hmmm, wonder why. Hmmm. Al Sharpton perhaps?
Have to agree with you, Bob. I just don't get how this cartoon is supposed to be funny. It just doesn't make sense to me. I don't think it was intended to be racist, but it's definitely not funny, not satirical, not enlightening through humor. It's just bad.
This is a bad joke- Somehow mocking the imbecilic "stimulus" bill and its dimwitted authors (in Congress) is somehow racist. So much for dissent and patriotism, I reckon.
Wonder where all this outrage from Sharpton was when Ted Rall caricatured Condi Rice in cartoons a few years ago? Oh, wait- she had that evil (R) after her name, that renders her non-Black.
Stupid stupid stupid. But we are talking about leftists, so I repeat myself.
I no longer wonder if Sharpton compares himself to a monkey. The statement isn't racist by default. I'm not an evil whiteman.
There is a pattern here. Holder tries to inflame racial prejudice with his comments, now Sharpie raises a connection that only a racist himself would see. Watch for more of this and a call for reparations soon from this "administration".
Hmm…when I first saw this cartoon, after hearing there was a controversy, my first thought that it was referring to the monkeys in Congress who wrote that bill. Probably could've been clarified if there had been multiple monkeys, but whatever–the cartoonist was stretching for the joke. Then I was actually surprised that a cartoonist (many of whom are pretty lefty, at least in the papers I see) would suggest that the stimulus bill is bad (the late night talk show hosts certainly don't think so). Sad, but that was my first thought–that I was surprised there was criticism for the stimulus (although this IS the NY Post). But I didn't get the idea that Obama is the monkey. If the caption said "…someone else to sign the stimulus bill" than Obama is the monkey. That's racist. This cartoon isn't racist.
It makes me tired–I don't understand why I have to accept that a term like "monkey" automatically has racist connotations. Can't it just mean out of control? Or hyped up? Not everything is defined in terms of race or bigotry. I don't understand why that's so hard to believe. But maybe Eric Holder can talk to the cartoonist and get him all straightened out, hmm?
Thanks, Bosch. It's been 20 years since I last saw that sublime moment. The thing that strikes me now is how Downey could get away with smoking a cigarette on the air. Nowadays, the PC Police would have him drawn and quartered.
So true, that show would have no chance in hell of existing today. Sure, it was crude, but the sheer hardcore outrageousness of it all could be just what we need today, which is part of why it would have no chance in hell.
There is now a Black president. Isn't all this stuff supposed to be over now?
Obama is the monkey on the leash. He's nothing more than a puppet. Why isn't Sharpton in Jail ? he's one of the biggest racists in this country.
So, as long as there are black people, monkeys can't be used in jokes/political cartoons right? Considering the fact that Obama probably didn't pen a single idea of his own in the stimulus bill and it was all done by lobbyists, you'd have to play that Kevin Bacon game to get back to Obama. Where was his outrage when the muslims were waving pictures of Condi Rice as a monkey? Oh yeah, she's a Rebulican so she probably deserved it right? I'm sure this has nothing to do with the fact that NY Post published the IRS investigation into Sharpton's donors.
It says much more about those who see race in the cartoon than those who don't.
I have to agree. It's a poor cartoon, but that said, Al Sharpton is a poor excuse for a human being and I hope I live to see the day that some brave soul calls him on his race-baiting ways.
I'm offended they used white cops. That must be racist somehow… just haven't figured out how yet.
Hey maybe Travis did write the Porkulous Bill. The whole he attacked a women and was shot is a Govt. cover-up. He had to be taken out. Makes as much sense as the 9/11 Troofers. [No disrespect for the victim if it reads like that]
I get the Post and this is Scott's usual stuff. He's a crude artist, but lampoons them all, and I too, don't see anything racist. If there was no recent monkey attack, it would be, but these allegations are crap. So far, the Post is sticking by him, (it's a good thing it's owned by News Corp.) As to Big Al, I've just got 12 letters – TWANA BRAWLEY!
We are all Marshall and I guess we are all racist.
Whatever, Sharpton is an opporunits and a twit.
I do think that you libs would win a whinning war anytime. You guys invented it. Frankly, most of us conservatives are working, not whinning/
Your name becomes you.
Al Sharpton wouldn't know how to make a living if he didn't do what he does.
http://the100mostannoyingthings.blogspot.com/
All who thought that this kind of crap by the Revrund Al and his ilk would go away once the messiah was installed as POTUS – here's your wake up call. Ugh – it's gonna be a l-o-o-o-ong 4 years. And censoring commonly used sayings for fear of being labled racist is only going to get worse. I heard a commentator on the radio last week refuse to complete the phrase that Obama was being given enough rope to hang himself. And, now, you can't say that something was put together so badly that a monkey could have done it. Disagreement with the President and the direction in which he's steering the nation is no longer simply policy difference – it's racist. Good God! Idiots, all.
==I'm offended they used white cops. That must be racist somehow… ==
Well, it is cuz thems is White cops and they used a gun on what is alleged to be a representation of our Dear Leader, Obammy, or some other Blacks. So, it doesn't matter what the real scenario is, rather what THEY THINK the scenario is, according to their agenda.
Touché, my sentiments exactly.
" Well, if you start your day out with that premise; guess what, you’ll find something offensive in your day."
———————————————————-
Such as (for example): Late night comics not mocking Obama enough, *too* much mocking from lefty blogs, a perfectly innocuous comment from the AG, and, (my favorite) taking offense at people who take offense at taking offense of having octuplets.

I'm sorry, but I find it hard to believe that nowhere in the creator's head was the fact that people might interpret this as a racist jab. I think the comic is just bad, not in poor taste, just not clever.
It doesn't take Al Sharpton to see that this might be offensive, but nor does it take him to "blow the lid" off of anything. This was a dumb jab that deserves to be forgotten. His martyred cries may have been lent credence when blacks could justifiably say that they were discriminated against, but a black man is president now, Al Sharpton should be out of a job.
So, again a CARTOON is ' offensive ' – !!! Not too long ago, a Danish cartoon in a newspaper infuriated MUSLIMS worldwide, resulting in violent protests including burning and damaging everything in their path. We must stand up to those 'sensitive' groups. Stop giving them air time and big bucks for their temporary retreat – until the next 'episode' .
What late night comic making fun of the Bamster their busy publicly servicing him yet. Lefty blogs who cares what that gaggle of losers thinks. Eric Holder is another race baiting victim. Black AG, and a black president, hum… what a racist country. You mean that, “mother of the year, or better yet, “welfare brood mare, lets not forget her first liter. This is a spot where a useless leftist might do some good, go remove the children, they’re doomed with that idiot.
Sharpton going after something like this is a disgrace, if he hasn't already turned into a caricature of himself then he's mighty close. This is just another case of something not being racist, but the people who want to be offended make it out to be and thus racism has reared it's ugly head yet again, nevermind that it wasn't racist in the first place. If the race baiters like Sharpton and Jackson would shut up for a minute maybe the rest of us could look around and see that, hey, maybe things aren't as bad as they've been made out to be by the people who's livelihood depend on us all not getting along.
It's sad but the author is absolutely correct, liberals are the one's who see people according to race, not conservatives. I wouldn't care except that the liberals then turn around and proclaim that conservatives are the racists (yet another tactic from their political playbook). They don't care who they ruin or who they hurt or how many lies they tell, just as long as they benefit in some way it's okay with them. Real conservatives have morals and they live by those morals, liberals on the other hand do whatever they want and then find excuses to justify their behavior. The world would be a better place if the liberals would grow up and stop all the name calling.
My name sir is intended to maximize respect from conservatives as they worship Teh Stupid and revile the pointy-headed braniacs who walk around carrying their oversized elitist noggins in shopping carts.
In the conservative world smart=elitist, ignorant=real/patriotic. Thus I call myself TEH STUPID!
Well you got to admit that the Obamanation cannot figure out why a lot of folks are starting to ask questions of them. Like why wasn't the bill looked over? I mean if this bill was needed to go into effect in a week. I might see the rush but this goes into effects nearly 6 six months from now.
Congress get ready for the Mid Terms. We at home are looking for a few ways to stick it to you and deeply.
And as such you have Absolute Moral Authority and cannot be questioned by melanin deprived lefties. Nice use of the AMA card. Well played, sir, well played.
Exactly, Tennwriter! I appreciate your recognition of said AMA. It is a powerful weapon, and I do not use it lightly! Be warned however…it knows no political stripe, and may be deployed anywhere, anytime.
So, then, you support Al Sharpton on this?
Gee, and AG Holder says we can't have an honest talk about race? Hmmm, wonder why? Al Sharpton perhaps? Nope, I think it must be Gary Graham's fault.
Jerry Springer?
I guess you must have been sleeping. Here's one http://www.politico.com/blogs/michaelcalderone/02...
Or try a Yahoo search: "bill clinton" + "fairness doctrine"
STUPID is as STUPID does.
Excellent. You've definitely got stones for saying that, even as an anonymous internet post…
It's pretty funny, though.
No no no! It's the racist white cops. They're blasting the monkey. Maybe they're "speciesist", too.
Did that monkey look like Vince Foster?
Here is a video I found about the cartoon that included some background information about it from a few different news sources that helps to clear some confusion up.
http://www.newsy.com/videos/firestorm_over_editor...
I long for the day when black people get over being black. I truly think that few others care. It's blacks not whites that promote most of the racism in the US. Sharpton is clearly a bad influence on the situation and a moron to boot.
There are other segments of society a lot lot lot lot lot lot more profitable making an industry of their plight.
(I wonder what these bloggers would say if some of those other would complain of anything, rightly or otherwise, where would they bloggers be hiding below. Any comments to this? C'mon; go ahead.)
Sharpton is just to me, an itsy bitsy weeny little copy of those. He observed it, learnt it, and imitated the whining-for-profit. And as per indications, he's barely making it for his hair grease.
I find Sharpton a very civil citizen, highly conscientious of his position in society, and highly humanistic.
That sometimes he pís out of the can I can't deny it, being Tawana his big-big one. But who doesn't? What am I? Am I Lord-the-perfect, feeling right to criticize and stone Sharpton to death bc of this? Can I be so weird as to take that position? No!
I prefer to notice, that Sharpton even crosses lines and sides up with defenseless Latinos, as a matter of civil responsibility. Something that no one other black does it. The guy Sharpton has guts. Sorry to recognize that publicly fellows.
'Honest' Al strikes again.
[...] It’s a great read, this top post: http://bearcreekledger.com/2008/12/2…e-magic-negro/ Also: Big Hollywood
Exactly! If Al sees racism in this it is only because of the racist sentiments that lie in his little brain.
"What's the ugliest part of your body…I think its your mind." ~ Frank Zappa
HA!!! Apparently electing a black guy as prez makes us more racist…so now we know what not to do in 2012.
My son must be a racist because he laughs when he watches Curious George.
This is obviously a very sexist cartoon.. To shoot Nancy Pelosi down in cold blood…. uh oh i need a cold shower.
Nice try, but no cigar. However, I am impressed that you got out your thesarus and dictionary and took a hour or so to draft your message. Keep trying, it will help (a little).
It's an insult to honest poo flinging monkies everywhere.
Poo-flinging monkeys of the world unite!
I've decided that henceforth, I will refer to lawmakers in Congress as "the monkeys in Congress." And if anyone objects, I'll say that while I understand the term may offend the dignity of some of the nobler apes, such as the gorilla and the orangutan, I can think of no greater collection of monkeys outside the San Diego Zoo than the Congress of the United States.
There is a Dilbert comic, I believe from 2005, where the bosses of the company in the comic are referred to as "Inebrieated Simian Miscreants" and it shows a monkey with a bottle of alcohol throwing money around. Its the same basic principle. Congress (and the president) are spending money like inebrieated Simian Miscreants. Its not racist, its true. Only a drunken evil monkey could be that irresponsible with the taxpayer's money.
Yes its funny, and its also insulting to monkeys everywhere. your average monkey isn't as bad as congress, you have to liquer 'em up first.
You, good sir, win at pointing out something I should have picked up on but didn't. Apparently i'm also calling myself black when I refer to my customer service job as being a "phone monkey"
i laughed out loud at this. Thumbs up to you.
Third time i've said this, it insults honest poo flinging monkeys everywhere. Its like calling congress drunken sailors on leave, drunken sailors have more standards then congress does, it insults drunken sailors.
The NY Post finally realized why Obama is President. We have a majority of idiots in America (who can't even interpret a joke).
Right on brother!
Umm, I'm guessing you probably don't know this, but "teh" is not a word in any dictionary. Perhaps a public school education is to blame? If not, then your parents threw away a hell of a lot of money sending you to private school. In any event, the "stupid" part of your screen name fits you perfectly. Keep on posting, brother! Your pseudo-intellectual ramblings are very amusing!
al sharpton, jesse jackson, louis farakhan are all RACE INDUSTRIALISTS, they have to keep the races divided by finding this crap to gripe about or they'd be out of a job. It's called job security baby.
"smart=elitist, ignorant=real/patriotic"
Teh Stupid=ass backwards
Did it ever occur to anyone that the cartoonist may have simply been trying to make fun of Obama's ears?
I've got a better one for you!
In the liberal world common sense=ignorance, indoctrination and brainwashing=smart
Kids climbing in trees look like a bunch of monkeys. Is that statement an insult to whites? Is that statement an insult to blacks? If so, why? What if a bunch of kids climbing in trees does reming one of a bunch of monkeys, do we have to lie about it in order to not be called a raciest. I climbed trees with my friends when I was a kid and I thought we looked like a bunch of monkeys as did our parents. Because of the timing of the cartoon, I thought it was in bad taste, but I was reminded of the comment that if you gave a bunch of monkeys typewriters, that eventually they would write all the worlds great works. I wonder if that statement is also racially insulting? It shouldn't be.
Because, as a joke, it doesn't make any structural sense. There's nothing about what the actual chimp in question had done to earn his tragic fate, nor is there anything in the "everybody knows" canon of chimp behavior that has anything to do with writing overstuffed spending bills. Now, if the real-life incident in question had involved cops shooting a PIG that had busted into a bank and was eating money… THEN this would be funny (if a little on-the-snout about it.)
And the MSM falls right in line – just as they did during the campaign.
The professional victims have to keep reminding the media that the messiah is off limits and they will not tolerate any criticism of the bogus prez.
Wonder if the media will ever decide to do their job of just continue to be the mouthpiece for the radical America haters.
I'm outraged – the white cops look stupid and have big Polish noses and no chins. And white cops are the only ones depicted shooting this poor animal. Police forces are now integrated now why single out whites?
I don't quite understand Sharptons referral. Where does he get the reference to Pelosi and Reed being referred to as monkeys as being racist. After all, they are the ones responsible for the bill. Bama just signed it. He probably never red it either, justhis pit bulls.
Ah, yes, the defenseless Latino card. Here it comes. More victims with their hands out.
I guess I will fire my gardener. Don't want him to feel victimized by me.
I am outraged that the cartoonist thinks he is funnier than I am. I am offended by his arrogance!
Note: Everytime President Obama makes a mistake, watch someone make a charge of racism. This phony outrage covers over the troop increases and the pork in the stimulus. Let's assume that the cartoon was about Obama, George Bush was called a monkey (Curious George), a Nazi, a warmonger, an idiot and every name in the book. If we truly want equality and not be "cowards", then nothing should be off limits.
Oh, but in the new tone of the post racial Comrade President Obama administration, anything that might even conceiveably be an insult to our Dear Leader is off limits, because we must all play nice.
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM...
Or worse yet, why did so many people on the left look at a picture of a crazed chimpanzee and immediately think of President Obama? My first thought (other than the cartoon missed the mark and wasn't funny) was of the old adage about 100 monkey typing on 100 typewriters churning out the works of Shakespeare.
