Listening To Annie Lennox’s Gaza Commentary is Like Walking on Broken Glass
by James KirchickLast week, former Eurthymics songstress Annie Lennox wrote about the “pornography of destruction” waged by Israel against the Palestinian civilians of the Gaza Strip. Outraged, she did what any other socially-concerned celebrity would do: call a press conference.
On the verge of tears, Lennox told the media how, a few days after Christmas, she turned on the telly to see that Gaza was in flames (the years of Hamas rocket-fire into southern Israel that precipitated the airstrikes apparently escaped her analysis). “As a Mother, how is this going to be the solution to peace?” she plaintively asked. At her side were the Sandinista-loving Bianca Jagger, the radical Islamist sheik-loving ex-Mayor of London Ken Livingstone, and George Galloway, the Member of Parliament who called on British troops deployed in Iraq to disobey orders and desert. “There has to be a place where people come to the table,” Lennox pleaded.
Of course, Israel has been at the proverbial table for years, trying to hammer out a peace agreement with the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people, the Palestinian Authority. It’s Hamas that wants to turn that table upside down, throwing platters of hummus and falafel all over the room. Here’s what happened before Annie turned on the television: In 2005, Israel unilaterally withdrew from the Gaza Strip, forcibly removing its settlers and uprooting military outposts. Immediately after the withdrawal, Hamas began firing rockets indiscriminately into bordering Israeli territory. In 2007, Hamas violently took control from the ruling Fatah party by murdering its way to power. In June of this year, Israel and Hamas agreed to a cease-fire brokered by the Egyptian government, but Hamas broke that agreement (as it always does) when it re-commenced rocket fire last month. But to truly grasp what Israel is up against, we ought to go back further, to the signing of the Hamas Covenant in 1988, which states that the group’s “struggle against the Jews is very great and very serious,” repeatedly cites Koranic justification for the murder of Jews and declares it “compulsory that the banner of Jihad be raised.”
On Saturday, Lennox spoke at a rally full of open Hamas and Hezbollah supporters who marched on the Israeli embassy throwing rocks and glass bottles at riot police. If Lennox, “as a Mother,” genuinely believes in peace, why does she speak at a rally organized by acknowledged supporters of organizations that inculcate hatred of Jews in Muslim children and teach them the virtue of suicide-terrorism?
Unlike her compadres Jagger, Galloway and Livingstone, who all have notorious histories of Communist fellow-traveling, Lennox is not known for far-left or anti-Israel posturing. Indeed, her political activism has thus far mostly consisted of feel-good stuff like singing at the Live 8 concert and generally raising awareness about global poverty. So one wonders what prompts her currnet, passionate antipathy towards Israel. Maybe it’s something as petty as the 2000 break-up with her Israeli husband, Uri Fruchtmann? I love Lennox’s music too much to want to dwell on her obnoxious polemics, but this newfound activism perfectly encapsulates how for so many critics of Israel — and not just celebrities, either — Middle Eastern history always begins with the latest alleged Israeli transgression.

It does seem that Lennox is happy to be a useful idiot for the kill the Jews crowd that’s well-represented by the celebrity culture. Unfortunately, people like Lennox are so ill read and so ignorant of historical context, they are easy prey. Sad that such chuckleheads are always good for a by-line.

Annie, what does that even mean? Perhaps Annie should sit at a table with Masab Yousuf, son of West Bank Hamas leader Sheik Hassan Yousef and discuss this further. I’m sure he could enlighten her with the unfiltered truth about this band of hate-filled thugs.
The lack of support for Israel is rather depressing. Even more so by celebrities. I’m sorry but I enjoy watching those rocket firing jerks getting their neighborhood blown to pieces. If they want peace(which clearly they don’t) they should stop terrorizing the people of Israel with constant rocket fire.
How is peace ever supposed to be possible in the Middle East when one side (the Palestinians) refuses to negotiate in good faith, breaks every cease fire ever put in place, and teaches it’s children (in their history and geography books) that the all of Israel is actually Palestine and belongs to them completely. That is no starting point for peace. And then you have these idiot people that want back in the spotlight that come out and blame it all on Israel- who is just trying to protect itself. Yes, Israel is lobbing missiles, bombs, and tanks at Palestinian targets- but they were provoked into it by 3 years of rocket attacks (far more than just about any other country would put up with- just think if Canada started bombing San Antonio or Houston- how long would it take for us to retaliate?) and even now Israel is painstaking in it’s attention to where the bombs fall and the missiles strike- trying with all it can to limit civilian casualties. It’s not Israel’s fault that Hamas delights in building a terrorist operation next to a school or hospital. I think that those celebrity wannabes that are coming out of the woodwork to denounce Israel are just the modern form of anti-Semites. They can’t abide by the fact that Israel has it’s own nation that it is willing to protect at all cost.

Do Jagger and Lennox know that under Hamas and their Iranian sponsors they would have to cover themselves just to go out? Now, maybe more people would be able to stand a Lennox concert if she were covered from head to toe but I would prefer just to keep my money to myself and not support her.
Let them live for a year in Iran and see if they feel the same way about the parties in the ME.
Another brain-dead entertainer, trying to make their empty lives mean something by working for a “cause,” mouthing the same old received and dreary leftist moral equivalence and Antisemitism. Why should we pay attention to and, more importantly, give any credence to, the untutored views of often drug-addled, ill-informed, and usually troubled, semi-literate entertainers—many of whom never graduated from college, or even finished high school, for that matter–on any of the major political, moral, strategic or foreign affairs issues of the day?
Knowing how to write a lyric, play a guitar, write or read a script, compose a picture, dance, or sing a song does not magically confer a detailed knowledge of history and its lessons, nor deep and instant wisdom on foreign affairs and military policy. Cocktail conversation is not knowledge, and accolades for their acumen coming from fellow dolts means nothing, but Hollywood entertainers—part of the vast Hollywood circle jerk–have convinced themselves that they have knowledge, wisdom and moral vision far beyond that of the mere mortals who pay to see them and have often made them rich. Having become rich—they obviously think—must be a sign that they have superior knowledge and acumen.
Their high self-estimation of their knowledge of the issues, and their similarly high self-estimation of their superior vision and moral stature (and their resultant preening and self-congratulation—check out the Golden Globe, Oscar or Emmy awards sometime) is a joke, one which only our giving their pronouncements and “positions” any credence at all, allows them to get away with.
It truly blows me away that people like Annie Lennox can spread all these tears and sadness for the Palestinian people but she says absolutely nothing about the missle attacks on Israel. Where are the tears? Where is the outrage? Where is the songs, poems, and articles written in defense of the Jewish nation. I simply do not get it.

The use of the word “pornographic” for things not related to pornography (as we know it) has become rather in vogue amongst the groupthinking Left these days. Has anybody else noticed that? It’s like they’re all taking the same classes at the same schools and walking out with the same lingo.
Why is it so many people do not see the whole picture? Do not bother to know history? and simply jump on a bandwagon and spew crap? I will be honest.. once I thought that there was hope that peace could be found between Palestine and Israel.. until I watched “To Die in Jerusalem”. The mindset of the Palestinian mother shocked me and woke me up. They do not want peace. We are not just fighting weapons we are fighting a mindset. And the constant attacks can no longer go unanswered. Israel has every right to protect itself. All of the questions that you are asking are the same ones that I ask.
Where is Annie for when the suicide bombers blow up buses with civilians, or sidewalk cafe’s. Nowhere.. the silence from Ms. Lennox and others of her ilk are deafening.
I am far more afraid for her children, and others like them, that have parents with such moral issues. More concerned with worshiping the god of
“global warming”, and support of terrorist organizations and crime, than teaching real moral values.

The romanticism that has enslaved modern thought has caused more detriment than not. The concept that a feel-good mentality will change the world is not a new one – and as in times past it is failing. Diplomacy only functions when both sides of the table are after the same goal. This is why the French where such masters at abusing it. Modern diplomacy is nothing more than the attempt by the aggressor to exploit the naivete of the victim. World War 2 is a very real, and very modern, example of this strategy.
Reality check: It’s a *valid* wartime strategy.
Hamas has repeatedly sought “truces’ which amounted to nothing more than just lulls to stockpile ammunition, compile intelligence, and try to create a false sense of accomplishment with the hopes of putting Israel in a state of ease that would facilitate their aggression. Thankfully, Israel has been faster on the eye than the rest of the world.
We need to realize that there is a real difference between seeking peace that benefits both sides and seeking a peace in which one gets what one wants, as are the wants of a spoiled child, at the loss of the other. How can you have peace when the other side of the table wants destruction?

I think Lennox’s statement is important. Not for the usual Leftist idiocy but as an indicator of the culture of the West.
We live in a Science Fiction World. The Pill, the Condom, the rising status and income of Women, and urban anonymous living have shaped society to radically different ways that the politics (Obama as Oprahesque Shaman in Chief) and Culture indicate.
PRECISELY because Lennox is a single mother, what she has to say and her preferred way of saying it, is important.
Simply put, the female orientation, so profound and deep, makes emotion, reflexive sympathy for the “hard” male-oriented societies, particularly polygamist societies, a given. Israel, being a nation of still, Western oriented, monogamist and modern peoples will NEVER get the backing or sympathy of a female-dominated society or culture.
Female dominated cultures want to FEEL not think. They back any anti-Western group, and the more loathesome and more anti-Women, the more they back them. Female dominated cultures assume that the power and dominance of the West in the Past is a given, that nuclear weapons (see Dianne Feinstein’s WSJ editorial over the weekend) exist only in the US and Russia, and that the West must set a “moral example” …
Because women in a female dominated society assume that the other cultures work the same way as the Culture of Oprah.
Lennox just assumes that with the proper ostracism or Mean Girl attitude, the Israeli-Hamas-Iranian-AQ conflict can be brought in line. This is Oprah’s and Obama’s attitude as well. Single women, btw, voted Obama 70-29 and were his decisive margin of victory.
This is not going to change any time soon. Hamas’s chief had four wives, a feature that Western women find fascinating (think “Big Love”) and sympathetic.
Most commentators find a disconnect — women don’t criticize polygamist Hamas and do criticize monogamous Israel. It is precisely because of that Polygamy (women love it, particularly in theory not practice and “over there”) that women in the West by the majority (there are of course dissenters) support Hamas. Lennox is the rule not the exception.
In Australia there is a proposal to ban topless sunbathing in beaches because Muslim men are offended. Women’s groups support the ban. This ought to tell you how the politics and culture works. Women always support any non-Western, male oriented, dominating and aggressive culture.
This is radically different than in the recent past (pre-1965) and it’s why a lot of commenters don’t “get” Western culture now. But just watch Oprah. You’ll understand why Lennox feels as she feels.

And it’s NOT the kind of blood that reeks from the morgues of Israel. No, these jerks don’t notice that blood at all. If you want to understand why Europeans, Americans, Australians, Canadians, and other Westerners would condemn Israel for defending itself while overlooking decades’ worth of Palestinian terrorism or the Palis blatant desire to destroy Israel, you must realize Israel is a cypher for the West itself. The Arabs/Iranians understand it too, which is why they call it the Little Satan (the U.S. of A. is of course The Great Satan). When they condemn Israel, they are condemning the West and Western values. Note that the same useful idiots also condemned our going into Iraq and even Afghanistan. It is the way of the leftist to condemn all things Western. The leftist wants to destroy the West, its institutions, and its traditions and replaced them with the socialist state. It is abhorrent to them to see a successful Westernized nation based on one of the West’s most influential religions defend itself. Their automatic sympathy is with the Other, the exotic. Or as I like to say, the leftist believes the guy with the better suntan and the crappier hut is the good guy. They don’t see good or evil in one’s actions. Well, look, I’ll agree with you that Lennox is probably best using her voice for singing and not wading in to a geopolitical issue that requieres a clear head. But for every Annie Lennox, there is a Bono or a Mia Farrow who is articulate on policy and using his or her cultural capital in the service of greater humanity and for the benefit of American soft power.

Peace is a contract. It takes two sides to live up to the terms of the deal to have a contract. When one side doesn’t, the only recourse by the other side is to enforce it.
Obviously, an entity like the U.N. has shown that it has no desire or ability to enforce peace, so Israel must enforce peace through the use of it’s military.
A party who unilaterally wants peace and lacks the ability or the desire to enforce it, is called a victim. So, based on this premise, I presume that Annie Lenox and friends are advocating that all Israelis be victims.

War isn’t pretty… but it’s better than turning over all your freedoms and living in an oppressed society. Until people realize we are at war with an ideology that is opposed to ours, that encourages lying to us and killing us, we will be in trouble. If the eight people in the picture really want to experience the real “pornography of destruction”, perhaps a few graphic pictures of militant Hamas fighters camouflaging their weapons and themselves amongst non-combatant Palestinian women and children. That would give a more accurate portrayal of the PR-created phrase. People like the warped, mind-dead Lennox, Jagger, and the rest of their shrieking ilk use their celebrity to play to the ill-informed teens and groupies who think reality can be found in a few pithy, self-serving phrases by so-called “rock gods”.
I am not a fan of Israeli premier Ehud Olmert and his Kadima party, but for three years, they steadfastly honored a truce while Hamas matched them with rocket and mortar fire fired into Israeli towns and villages near the Gaza border.
Before the shameless eight in the picture criticize Israel for defending itself, legitimately, it should examine their own country’s record of violence in subjugating Ireland, Scotland and the Indian sub-content.

First, what kind of qualification is she invoking “as a mother” even to weigh in? People have a right to speak and a right to be ignorant, but most try at least to be circumspect about exercising both rights at the same time.

I could flip that question why is she so concerned about Gaza then? By your statement she shouldn’t care one or the other. Why is the rest of the world so concerned about how Israel deals with an enemy? It’s the same way with everyone always concerned about the damage Israel inflicts and never really cares what Hamas does.
Pandax, Ms. Lennox is concerned about Gaza because of the suffering and death she sees, and she responds to what she sees as immoral actions by a foreign country that, in her view, lead to that suffering and death. The rest of the world is concerned about how Israel deals with its enemy because they are primarily loyal not to Israel, but to their own countries. This is why they do not try to silence criticism of Israel, because they do not feel they have a duty to defending every action Israel undertakes and stifle every criticism of what is, after all, a foreign country. What I want to know is, why are so many people who post here so desperately concerned with defending the actions of a foreign country and silencing its critics? As an American, or a Briton, or a Spaniard, or whatever, why should anyone care if some British subject exercises her freedom of speech to criticize a foreign country? As an American, I don’t understand how a loyal American could have such an attitude.

I keep seeing Liberals defending Hamas by either A) insulting Conservatives, or B) ignoring all the facts and making general statements. They will never address the claims by Hamas that they want nothing but the death of the Jews (and the West for that matter), that they intentionally put their citizens in harms way then try to capitalize on the tragedy (including the fake video of a child dying they had to pull from CNN this week), that they’ve committed thousands of individual acts of terrorism in just the last few years (but we’ll hear about Christians because of a handful of incidents involving abortion clinic attacks by a few nuts until the end of time), or that they hate homosexuals or strong women (the first thing that any Muslim extremist group does is subjugate the women of their country).
If it wasn’t so sad it would be laughable.

I as a liberal, am prepared to answer your call, Des, without ignoring the facts, making general statements, or ignoring Hamas. The facts are that 1) Hamas was created because Israel wanted to get rid of Arafat’s party. While it is true that their more radical faction is committed to the destruction of Israel, they have repeatedly said that they would recognize the right of israel to exist if Israel would afford Palestinians the same privilege by respecting the 67 borders, not bulldozing their homes, not cutting off their electricity, food, water, and medecine. Of course, there are extremists on both sides, but they should not be taken to represent the views of the majority. 2) Hamas does not use human shields, Gaza is a TINY TINY area with 1.5 million people crammed in, no matter where you go there are people. It is one of the most dense areas in the world. Thats why air strikes violate international law – because there you must disregard the lives of innocents to hit your targets. 3) Your views of Muslims are at the least stereotypes and at the most blatant racism. There are moderate secular arab nations (such as Palestine) that are quite progressive in their treatment of homosexuals and women. The fact of the matter is that Israel is an apartheid state – arabs and jews do not get equal treatment. They have caged the palestinians in a small area, deprived them of their human rights, and are now systematically killing innocents. Sound familiar? We used to call that a Nazi concentration camp. The oppressed have become the oppressors and that is just sad.

about the cease fire…there are other ways of breaking the cease-fire other than with weapons..and this is exactly what Israel did…..before hamas even decided they wanted to shoot rockets gaza was suffering from the lack of food,oil,water due to the sort of ”embargo” israel decided to install….that proves my point..israel was the one to break the cease fire not only because people died but also because is was not part of the agreement they made.

Annie Lennox’s statement to the press relating to the Gaza war is surprising by its total disregard for Israeli suffering.
Israelis have had to submit to hundreds of terrorist attacks, ie. attacks against their civilian population for over 40 years now. In a recent eight day period, 300 missiles were sent into Israel with missiles at times hitting southern cities, towns and villages. The constant psychic toll of never knowing if a missile will claim you is a staggering demand to make of any individual.
As Canadian Nobel prize for literature nominee, Irving Layton once put it, “Why should they be expected to sit there like clay ducks in a shooting gallery?”
And as we speak of Canada, Canada has not been hit even once by a terrorist attack and yet it has enacted legislation that allows for “security certificates”, ie. the right of Canadian enforcement agencies to detain and charge anyone suspected of planning to commit a terrorist act, without them knowing what the charges are. If Canada can go that way without even one attack, surely Israel has the right to properly defend itself considering the kind of long history it has had to endure relating to attacks against its civilian population.

In effect the war was fought for ego reasons alone, but approx. 300 Argentinian sailors were blown out of the Atlantic by the British navy. Where was Annie Lennox? Did she protest? Although Ms. Lennox is a Scotswoman, it’s clear she has been infected by English sanctimonious finger pointing hypocrisy, and is cow-towing to it.

The lack of support for Palestine is rather depressing. Even more so by celebrities. I'm sorry but I enjoy watching those artillery firing jerks getting their neighborhood hit by Kazam rockets. If they want peace(which clearly they don't) they should stop terrorizing the people of Palestine with constant killings of children and women, even pregnant women.
