Music Television Makes a Comeback
by John R. KasichWhen MTV first came out in the early ’80s, it was the greatest thing going. But over the years, they stopped showing videos and the music seemed to die. Until recently, it was difficult to find actual music on television.
Palladia, however has changed that. I was recently watching O.A.R.: Live at Madison Square Garden (Go Bucks!) on the HD Channel. Broadcast in vivid 1080i with tremendous sound, Palladia has made music television fun again. I felt like I was singing along to “Shattered” with the rest of the audience. Palladia broadcasts plenty of videos, but the concerts are what make the channel a true experience.
They use programming from MTV, VH1 and CMT, but from my experience, it has been completely music centered. I have yet to see a reality show or an hour devoted to 1973 fads. Obviously, this could change at anytime — it is owned by MTV, after all. Until then, I’m enjoying the ride.
I may check out Foo Fighters: Live at Wembley this week.

Kasich for head VJ in 2010!
I’ll watch with some trepidation- I remember when VH1, MTV2, and VH1 Classic were all created for us whiners who still wanted to see music videos, only to have them eventually ruined with the same junk you find on MTV. The “reality” shows found there now are not only repulsive and offensive, they give today’s audience the wrong message concerning…well, everything!
Rock bands, especially indie sorts, still make quality music vids that are artistically bold and creative. Think Radiohead. Or humorous. Think Foo Fighters.
Wish there was a show committed to such. Palladia has a general music vid show, but I dread having to fast-forward through the worthless vids – the narcissistic, or the boring live clips – to find an occasional gem.
Hmmm, a nice video recharge/reminder of the good ol’ days with VH1 Classic’s 2009 videos to kick off the year (plenty from all those bands, too, Lola), so this Palladia sounds interesting.
That said, and no offense to Mr. Kasich, but O.A.R. bored the hell out of me with the songs they played on Fox News’ New Year’s Eve party (this is what fills Madison Square Garden these days???). Give me Three Cow Garage, Columbus’ finest, any day of the week.
Great memories of MTV. They are basically a reality show/propaganda machine.

Hey John,
I wish there were more like you representing us. Ever think about going back?
Yes! Palladia is a great channel so far, if you have HD programming and a TV to play it. One can see actual music videos as opposed to whatever MTV’s been pushing (I stopped watching in college, when they stopped playing videos). I’m hoping they put off the devolution for a while, at least until someone not owned by MTV can put up a viable alternative.
As a fellow Ohioan Mr. Kasich, when will you be announcing your campaign to replace George Voinovich? Or maybe a run at ending the Reign of Ted in the governor’s mansion? There are only so many non-RINO Republicans in Ohio, ashame we can’t get the ones we do have to run more often …
EPorvaznik:
Saw Three Cow Garage with 200 other people in a 1000 square foot bar in Troy, Ohio a couple years ago. They played with Drag the River, an alt-country band from Colorado made of former members of the band ALL. My brother was fans and friends of Drag the River and booked the show and fun was had by all.
John! Perhaps the hardest working man in the 104th… if the world was fair, and journalists did their job, the would be reminding all of us what the 104th was doing… and how their efforts, had they not been thwarted, would have left this nation in at least reasonable financial health… and our current fiscal crisis would have been reduced to a small annoyance instead of the gut-wrenching ordeal that it will be.
Hat’s off to you. Many of us remember your heroic efforts, and I am so thankful for men of courage and conviction like you. If you were to ever run for the office of the exectuive, you would have my vote.

Oh lots of us Republicans love music, and not just Lawrence Welk. Johnny Ramone was a Republican and a major fan of Ronald Reagan.
RIP Johnny my man.
I had on MTV the other day, and not only did it make my 22 year-old self feel old (what do these people have against proper grammar?!?!), but it also smothered me with liberal propaganda. My special favorites were the Obama inauguration hope-n-change MTV commercial in which an Obama speech played over John Legend’s piano work (he’s so cool, like a celebrity!!!), and the Real World commercial featuring the transgendered cast member, both shown over and over. Glad to see the youth are being encouraged to look at both sides, think critically, and come to a thoughtful decision on their own with all the evidence and arguments!
I don’t have HD, but I would love to see a 100% music channel. The concerts sound especially cool. That’s something you can’t get anywhere else. It’s odd that Music Television no longer features ANY music.
I was a county chair for John Kasich’s ill fated 2000 campaign for President. He came to the Field of Dreams here in Iowa and I got to visit with him as we rode around in my car.
He went through my CD selection and surprisingly commented knowledgeably about much of it. Cat knows his music. I will give him that.
Tired: You’re either the most obvious caricature I’ve seen on this site, or you’re completely serious, and either way you’re a goddamned troll.

This is good–music videos, performers, talent, artistry, hard work, genius revealed. We need that! I have teenagers and they are being subjected to people acting like human dogs in heat.
I too love the Foo Fighters. Their song are about questions I have in my mind. The people who produced the greatest music ever are still kicking, so why don’t we listen some more and give them a venue?
I’m ready. We just need to get clued in about them, like Robert Plant and Allison Krause’s recent recording. We’ll get them on our Ipods. I’d love to load it full of mature rock music.
I taped a Chili Peppers concert of Palladia. Very, very enjoyable. I also saw that they rebroadcast some to the CMT Crossroads which can be great.
Stan, I think I’m making a point parallel to yours, but the 80’s had some awesome music. I think your point was that MTV hyped a certain style. I would agree, but I think Grunge was a bit overhyped and formulaic too. I respect Nirvana, Cornell, Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees, all that stuff, but they stole the attention that should have gone to mid 80’s predecessors like Fishbone and the Replacements. Those kind of bands had range and soul, something I never heard coming out of Seattle.
John Kasich is a good man, he was a budget hawk, and I would love to see him
make a Senate run in Ohio! Go Johnny Go!
Krebstar:
Have you dug deep into Alice in Chain’s catalog? I feel they were just lumped into the grunge movement because of the place and time they started to make it really bug. (They were really annoyed at being called ‘grunge’ too). I may be telling you stuff you’ve already known, lol. But if you like them, and you haven’t disected their stuff, I def. recommend it. Their influences are all over the place from blues to to Sabbath to Heart. They got lumped in big time.
lol, “bug” is “big”.
They took the cameras off the music and focused on the audience. I don’t dance to teenage angst.
Palladia? What channel is that? I love Muchmusic!!
To Andrew – I think I would’ve made a good VJ in my younger days…
To the others who are debating by music tastes – That’s what makes this site fun.
To those who want to see me back in politics – It’s no secret I am seriously thinking about running for Governor of Ohio.
It’s no secret Ohio has become quite a fixer-upper for the GOP, too!
Just the man for the job. Good luck.
Hopefully the Congressman has reason to be back visiting Iowa someday.
Ew, O.A.R.? I figured the writers at this place would be anti-jam bands, given, you know, the massive drug culture. You aren’t a Paulite are you?

Can’t wait to volunteer.
John Kasich for governor, sounds like an excellent idea. Look forward to voting for you. Thanks for the link to this site, excellent.

Please do. I will vote for you.
To those who want to see me back in politics – It’s no secret I am seriously thinking about running for Governor of Ohio.
Please, John, for the love of God, do.
