After noting that Mohammed is now the most popular name for newborns in Britain, Bill Maher stopped his panel and audience cold by asking, “Am I racist to feel alarmed by that? Because I am. And it’s not because of the race, it’s because of the religion. I don’t have to apologize, do I, for not wanting the Western world to be taken over by Islam in 300 years?”

This clip is an excellent representation of how insidious political correctness has become, we can’t even stand up for own culture anymore without a few hundred people acting as though Bill Maher just lit a cross on fire. Multiculturalism is now the highest value on the Left — the tolerating of intolerance in the name of racial sensitivity – which is why the slow creep of Sharia Law has gained a foothold in the Western world. A couple weeks ago, on the air, Maher scolded Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas over the title of his book “American Taliban,” by saying in effect, “I love you Markos, but we are not the Taliban.”
Maher’s wrong about most everything but he’s obviously right on this, and this is the fight of our time, no? Maher is also smart enough to know that this moment of pushing back against the very foundation of liberal orthodoxy would come with the price of temporarily becoming the bad guy, and he did so anyway. He deserves credit for that and so does Margaret Hoover for wanting to have a discussion. But shame on Lawrence O’Donnell, Reihan Salam, Zach Galifianakis and the audience — not for disagreeing, but for doing something worse: throwing off a very clear vibe that there was no way in hell this discussion was going to take place.
And we already know how PC-Enforcer Jon Stewart would’ve reacted had he been in the room.

You are absolutely right that Maher is hostile to Christianity, Dolemite, but so are most Leftists, but give Maher credit for two things.
1. He's consistent and doesn't just single out Christianity.
2. He understands the importance of the WESTERN world and WESTERN civilization.
Both of these points represent the big difference between him and the Left — who refuse to acknowledge either.

You gotta give him credit because so much of the dominant popular culture — of which Maher is a member in good standing (for the time being, anyway) — is committed to denying the obvious.
That may be, but it was, I have to admit, a pretty risky one. That's more than I can say for Stewart and Colbert, who always play it safe and have never done anything truly risk-taking in their entire careers.

Yes. Yes it has. There are some people who won't wake up until their heads are in the process of being sawed off. Stewart and Colbert strike me as those kinds of people. I'm forced to give Maher credit for being a little smarter than that, or at least less of a coward.

What surprises me is his intellectual honesty for once. When many self-identified atheists or "free thinkers" airily claim that they oppose "organized religion", what they really mean is Christianity. In spite of the tenants of Islam being far harsher, the fact that it's not the classical religion of the West means it gets a free pass. Because it's "ethnic" or "anti-colonial" or some other silliness.
It's a rare thing to see a vocal atheist take an honest look at religions equally, and I have to be intellectually honest myself and give him props for being right for once.
Islam isn't a race. It's a radical religion.

I respect an honest broker, especially in comparison to a Jon Stewart who hides behind his clown mask. Maher comes ready to rumble, he steps in the arena, he's willing to fight and argue and debate — unlike liars like Stewart and the MSM who throw left-wing bombs and then tremble behind a shield of "objectivity."
Maher also has conservatives on his show and lets them have their say. He's no blacklister like much of popular and media culture who REFUSE to allow conservative ideas any kind of airing.
The guy's wrong about almost everything, but unlike most Leftists, especially in the area of entertainment, he's no PC-infested Fascist blacklister.
I don't agree with him and he pisses me off all the time, but I can at least acknowledge and respect those qualities about him — which are not small things.

John – Maybe six or seven years ago I could have given some credit to Maher for saying this but given what has gone on in that time there are certain people who I just no longer give any benefit of the doubt and distrust basically anything they say or do . Maher is one of those people.

We forget sometimes that Maher can actually be funny when he turns his attentions to subjects that are worthy of his snark. He has gone off the deep end, but sometimes comes back to shallow waters, it is there that he does deserve encouragement and maybe some floaties. Like Pat Condell, his acerbic wit shows itself at its God-given best when turned to what is truly wrong with our world, East and West. Condell is straight on about Islam, like Maher, even though they are both grossly misguided about Christianity. After all, only one religion can ACTUALLY be right. I agree with you, even though I personally dislike Bill Maher. What I am realizing though, is that most of the Liberals I know (many are Ivy-league educated people) have been indoctrinated by their educators that "Libertarians" are the farthest right of any party. My son has an English teacher who made that very statement to his class. My Democrat friends read books like "Infidel" and are shocked for five minutes, but then still go on to support PC Democratic candidates who have shut down any discussion of the spread of Sharia Law and support the Elena Kagans of the world.

The problem is that my Liberal friends who are well-educated and consider themselves sophisticated have been led to believe (by Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Rachel Maddow, Keith Olbermann and even Bill Maher) they are fear-mongering if the show any concern whatsoever about the spread of Islam. Jon Stewart and Rachel Maddow are the gods and learned professors to Progressives. They have mocked and derided anyone critical of Islam, Mosque-building anywhere, and poo poo the stonings and beheadings as random aberrations in a generally peaceful religion. They refuse to give any air time to Muslims like Fouad Ajami or M. Zudi Jasser–who are Americans first, Muslims second.
But what is deeply pathetic is that the pundit shills for the Progressives have politized the threat of Islam. They have defined the "fear of the spread of Islam" as a Republican, fear mongering hoax to increase military spending and enrich Lockheed, General Dynamics, etc. Americans who would normally understand the danger of the spread of Sharia law, for instance, now feel that they are engaging in right-wing fear-monger conservative thinking if they look at the facts and become alarmed–so they shrug it off and call conservatives racists. We end up with people like Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg basically denying that Muslims blew up the WTC and Juan Williams being fired for stating his personal fear. The new Progressive/Liberal/Democrat party line is that you cannot name your enemy or you are an ignorant racist–which is an easy way to defame conservatives or Libertarians because they are continually stating the truth about the threat of Islam. This issue has been politicized to our detriment.

You used the expression "lit a cross on fire" and I like the analogy. What I hate is the incorrect usage.
One can SET something (or someone) on fire. One can LIGHT a match or LIGHT a campfire. But to "light" something "ON" fire is just a horrible travesty of the language! Can't you hear how wrong it sounds??? Yeesh.
And I know, I know – it's one of those horrid-sounding expressions that's become part of the vernacular and that in itself is an indictment of this country's education system, don't you think? It's similiar to another misuse of English – "bored OF it" – which also grates on one's ears. It should be "bored BY it" – whatever "it" is.

I agree, to an extent. It's almost a case of Jekyll and Hyde: you never know which Maher you're going to get. Sometimes he's the old Bill Maher: willing to argue, willing to admit fault, taking a position unpopular with his audience. But most of the time he's the new Bill Maher: complacent, snide, smug, more concerned with making fun of something he doesn't understand but finds offensive than actually having a conversation in which he might turn out to be wrong.
I support marijuana legalization … but man, if the opposition ever needs a poster child for how long-term exposure to drugs can screw up your brain, Bill Maher is a great choice.

For the past 3 weeks I've noticed that Lefties are now abruptly changing their tunes, they're suddenly praising the taste of tea. Peggy Noonan is a case in point – only two months ago, she was spitting at the Tea Party people and she was foaming at the mouth over Palin. I have often puzzled over the liberal fawning over muslims after 911. I was wondering how long it would take them to figure out that mainstreal islam is sober and serious, and condems most of what liberals find pleasurable.
