‘L.A. Times’ Forces Stallone to Defend ‘Expendables’: It’s Not Jingoistic!
by John NolteOnly in present-day Hollywood would a filmmaker have to try and cut off the media-created narrative that his creation was too patriotic. And it was this article written by left-winger Steven Zeitchik of the L.A. Times that created the kerfuffle Stallone responds to below. Obviously, this was Zeitchik’s goal. Yet again, our cultural enforcers attempt to toxify a hit film that doesn’t adhere to their left-wing worldview in order to make those thinking of reproducing the same think twice about the media misery that always comes with it.
How far Hollywood has fallen. Today, accusations of making a patriotic film must be defended against. But there’s no political blacklisting or anything…
—–
I can’t find the link and I’m already late for a screening, but earlier this week, someone at a fairly high-profile film-site claimed I had declared “The Expendables” the most patriotic film ever, or something similar to that. After reviewing the only two pieces (here and here) I’ve written since seeing Stallone’s box office hit, what I can declare is that she’s just making that up (I do remember she was a she). Nowhere did I state “The Expendables” was flag-waving or even patriotic — unless clear storytelling lines between good and evil and masculine heroes who selflessly risk their own lives are now considered, by default, elements of America jingoism. Which is kind of a terrible thing to say about the rest of the world.
Other than an American flag hanging in the Expendable hangout, Stallone’s glorious throwback to the awesome 80s is nothing more than a satisfying good guys vs. bad guys actioner with a terrific sense of humor about itself and a nice moral that Stallone himself sums up perfectly in this interview:
‘Five guys that are expendable, that really don’t fit into society — finally they’re kind of cajoled into doing something for free, which gets them they’re morality back.”
Has the Left become so deranged that the universal values of selflessness, coming to believe in something bigger than yourself, the hanging of an American flag, and not being nihilistic, now qualify as some kind of hyper-jingoism?
And remember, “jingoism” is just a word that really means “patriotism liberals find offensive” — which is just about everything. As a matter of fact, the only patriotism the Left seems at all comfortable with these days is dissent against America.
Is it November yet?
P.S. Some of you might have read my ode to the drive-in movies last week. Well, guess who’s taking his best girl to the drive-in movies tonight for a second helping of “The Expendables?” Purely by coincidence, last week a friend of my wife’s mentioned she was going to the drive-in — which is how we found out that for all these years we’ve been living less than 10 miles from one. Yes, I’m an idiot.

I don't think Stallone really had to defend "The Expendables." I just think he's a very smart man who seized an opportunity to keep the movie in the news. There's nothing the Times can do that will drive more people to the theater than to rail against it's patriotism. It's hilarious how out of touch they are. I hope they keep talking– it'll only make the film more money.
"There is much talk about 'jingoism'. If by 'jingoism' they mean a policy in pursuance of which Americans will with resolution and common sense insist upon our rights being respected by foreign powers, then we are 'jingoes'."
- Theodore Roosevelt
"Has the Left become so deranged that the universal values of selflessness, coming to believe in something bigger than yourself, the hanging of an American flag, and not being nihilistic, now qualify as some kind of hyper-jingoism?"
Yes.
I remember the meaningless epithet of jingoistic was hurled at Tears of the Sun. Using the inverse rule of logic when it comes to leftist world view I knew that film would be satisfying and probably patriotic.
If The Expendables is jingoistic then you know it will be good.
The L.A. Times and movie critics in general are a reliable reverse indicator of common sense. If they condemn it as "jingoistic" …you can almost assume it positively portrays America, the military, manhood, womanhood, children, life, Christianity, etc.
Yes, I’m an idiot.
No way are you an idiot Mr. Nolte. Maybe an imbecile, but no way an idiot.
Apologies, just kidding, could not pass up a straight line like that.
I have no doubt Stallone's smart. If he wasn't he wouldn't be filthy, stinkin' rich. If I'm not mistaken didn't he write (and maybe even direct) the first Rocky movie.
His personality doesn't come across that way, but that means nothing. I had a college math teacher who once told us about the worst math professor he ever had for a class. He said the guy talked to the chalk board – rarely if ever turned around, mumbled, and no one could read his writing. He said the class had to set up a study group and teach themselves the subject because they could barely understand a thing he said.
The professor was Albert Einstein.
Stallone is VERY smart, he's just not an intellectual. And that's a compliment, because most intellectuals couldn't find a toaster jammed in their ass with both hands and a metal detector.
If I were Stallone I would have told the leftwing vermin to go phuq themselves; they've had a parade of anti-American movies made, it's time for more unabashed pro-American movies. I'll take The Expendables any day over dreck like Eat, Pray, Puke.
Stallone has a lighthearted personality for sure, but you can tell just by the things he says when he stops joking and gets serious for a minute that he is no intellectual midget.
If that isn't a line in a movie, it needs to be!
"They couldn't pour piss out of a boot if the instructions were written on the heel." The movie Gettysburg.
It used to infuriate me talking with modern liberal friends and family about how Bush's problems with public speaking was proof he was an idiot.
I finally got fed up and said 'Let's see, he has a masters from an ivy league school, knows how to fly jets and is President of the United States. What do you do for a living? As I recall clean bed pans.'
Shut him up for quite a while.
You're lucky. Some liberals just don't know when they're beat. Some actually make a lot of money with that little trick.
"Has the Left become so deranged that the universal values of selflessness, coming to believe in something bigger than yourself, the hanging of an American flag, and not being nihilistic, now qualify as some kind of hyper-jingoism?"
The answer is yes.
"P.S. Yes, I’m an idiot."
But you're still a loveable one John!
Thanks for all the great articles!
I remember the first time I saw a Stallone interview many years ago. I was surprised that he was nothing like Rocky or Rambo. He's very, very smart. He did in fact write and direct Rocky. He fought for it too– I believe they wanted to cast Ryan O'Neil in the part. That is still one of the best movies ever. Best series' ever too if you leave out Rocky V.
The left continually sets the premise by which we must defend or argue a point… I'm sick of it.
Like: We're racist.
Swift-boated.
Bush is Hitler.
Oh you're jingoists.
Gay rights!
A woman's choice!
The Constitution GIVES us Rights.
Guns are dangerous!
Why hasn't the Government done something about it?
Islamaphobic!
I'm friggin sick of it!
I think the first Rocky was one of the greatest movies ever made. The story, the actors, the sets, the complex relationships, it blew me away. For that accomplishment I could even almost forgive Stallone if joined Code Pink. Almost.
I've never been much of a fan of the sequels, I think he set too high bar in the first one to ever reach it again. In my opinion, he's never done anything even close to that since. But that's because I give the first Rocky such high accolades.
I also liked F.I.S.T. which I thought was an interesting movie. But most of the rest I find to be just simple mindless entertainment. And that's absolutely fine by me. Whether he's a mobster wearing spats or blowing stuff up, it's good enough for me.
The only way to debate modern liberals is to refuse to allow them to do just that.
If they set the premise it will be based on emotions and you will lose. Refuse to accept that. And if they can't handle that, move along because you're wasting your time.
I hope money still talks to hollywood liberals. You don't have to believe in the content of a Pro America movie liberals, just shut the hell up and make the movie anyway. It's just good business.
May I suggest you send Zetichik the gift of a black cowboy hat? Then again, the symbolism might just be lost on one so dense.
My favorite part of the interview was when Stallone said "I think America Apologizes too much". Even though O'Reilly inadvertantly spoke over the line so that it was barely audible. Never the less, It was refreshing to hear those words come out of an actors mouth!
Let them.
"We're racist." Yes, leftists are racist. You should stop it.
"Swift-boated." You mean Borked. I agree, you shouldn't do things like that.
"Bush is Hitler." And you are insensitive to the memory of the millions murdered by Hitler.
"Oh you're jingoists." Yes I am. Every time you demand I choose between the U.S. and some other country I will always choose the U.S.
"Gay rights!" No, equal rights!
"A woman's choice!" And not your requirement.
"The Constitution GIVES us Rights." No, my humanity gives me rights. My Constitution merely forces my government to respect them.
"Guns are dangerous!" So are cars. Oh right, you want to outlaw them too. Have you given up your own yet?
"Why hasn't the Government done something about it?" Why do they have to?
"Islamaphobic!" Christophobioc and Judeophobic!
The main villain is the cliche of the liberal bad guy ex CIA agent gone bad, so it's not completely pro american. The evil dictator who's Chavez "like" even has somewhat of a regret of his actions, so there's stuff in there for the left to love as well.
I've got a conservative tv/film review blog at http://hollywoodpropaganda.wordpress.com
Just put up my "expendables" review. Check out the site and if you like it pass it on!
Screw the Times.
A Leftist's beliefs are all designed to pander to his ego. So when you have an argument with a Leftist, you are not really discussing the facts. You are threatening his self esteem. Which is why the normal Leftist response to challenge is mere abuse.
"When times are confusing, we want movies to reflect that confusion…."
If a movie is 'confused' about evil, it does nothing. Which is what Zeitchik wants. Confusion is the smoke screen he hides behind. A blast of courage from someone like Stallone blows that smoke to hell and reveals the gutless little Zeitchik for what he is. No coward wants that.
"an effete corps of impudent snobs who characterize themselves as intellectuals."
Actually, the best thing to send Zetichik is a pig named Mohammead. it fits him perfectly.
That is the best line I've read all day. Thanks for the laugh!
Whenever we on the right complain about leftist messages in movies, we are told, "Oh, just grow up, suck it up and enjoy the movie." This from someone who agrees with the message and, in fact, agrees with the messages of 99% of what Hollywood puts out. Easy for them. But, then, let one little movie like An American Carol slip through, and it's a different story. Then, the screeching and whining begins. And, any actor who dares go off the liberal reservation is run out of town.
I might just see Expendables again because of that interview. Stallone is hilarious.
"America apologizes too much." Stallone gets it.
Good stuff! Except…. your humanity doesn't give you rights… PROVIDENCE does! The Creator… or we're French!?
I'm not disagreeing with your point. Sounds like what you're attempting to do is determine why, which trust me, leads to psychology, and I'm not going that far in trying to figure out why they believe what they do. And I've been watching them, living among them for almost 50 years.
I'm more interested in how they accomplish what they do, regardless of what idiotic position they take.
After 45+ years of observation, and being a former member, I conclude the best evidence suggests it because of charisma, emotions, hormones and youthful idiocy.
For me the battle is how to best counter that.
I can't wait and I'll bet millions of others can't wait for Expendable II. For the next one I hope instead of some fictional island, they use an islamic extremest training camp.
The basketball court scene with Jason Statham was worth the price of the picture. There's something about an obnoxious punk and his loser friends getting beaten senseless. Next time have him doing the same to a bunch of jihadists playing kick the goat head.
I doubt it, but maybe Obama will learn being an American means you don't have to apologize for doing good.
They couldn't organise a drinking sessions at a brewery.
Yeah, he set the bar almost impossibly high with the first Rocky. The rest were more along the lines of trying to capture the feeling of the first one with the against-the-odds fights and that great theme music. But still, he kept a certain consistency to the films and you don't see that very often.
Sheesh. Even the most Jingo-istic of Stallone's work (Rocky 4) is decidedly non-jingoistic.
These people need to spend less time in film studies class, and more time in the theatre.
Great movie but I wouldn't call it or The Expendables jingoistic, from my point of view as an Australian I'd call Independence Day a jingoistic movie. By that I mean a movie that celebrates America and American exceptionalism, but I loved Independence Day as much as the other two movies.
And I have no idea why it would be wrong for an American to make a movie that is jingoistic, if all films made by Americans were jingoistic it would be boring. Just like it is boring with a large amount of anti American films being made lately. I'd rather watch a pro American movie over an anti one any day.
Dad-gum-it! After reading about this film the past week, and reading Stallone's interviews, and seeing where he said "America apologizes too much," I believe the TRs are going to crack open their wallets and see the first film we've watched at a movie theater in over 2 years.
Zeitchick should be forced to defend being limp-wristed coward who would gleefully collaborate with the forces of evil in exchange for a small espresso.
I didn't even see The Expendables as overly pro American. The guys in it were American, but they were not fighting for or to protect America, at first they were fighting for themselves (money) then they were fighting to do the right thing as they saw it. They fought foreigners and some rogue Americans but it was never portrayed as America vs the bad guys, just the good guys vs the bad guys. You may see that as being pro American and as an Australia I don't.
"Brevity is the soul of wit"
– Some dead English playwrite
Those who call it "too patriotic" have obviously not seen it. The bad guy is your classic rogue CIA agent, with the CIA itself cast in a not so much better light. When Stallone and his crew go to do the right thing, it isn't for Mom and apple pie.
Hmmm Zeitchick……Zeit…chick…..meaning a chicken of the current times? SYN: liberal
John your ode to the drive in last week inspired me to go see The Expendables again, this time at the drive in. I don't have a special someone to take so I went with a mate who hadn't seen it, had a blast the only issue being the windows were fogging up. I liked being able to sit back, eat a nice Oz Burger and watch a great movie with a mate.
Oh and just in case you were wondering you can get your mind out of the gutters, the windows were fogging up as it was very cold!
I saw Cop Land ! No Refunds! You just have to love Stallone for that along. The Guy knows how to write direct and act in a move most guys would go and pay money to see. Its not rocket science. Seems to me he is just one of those hollywood guys who was suppose to be bit player, Ending up doing what ever it is he wants to do. Before Rocky he was the guy who mugged Woody Allen. Now its sweet, make a movie and make very very good box office in a down economy, In the end that is the problem the left has, not the movie, its how he makes a buck and the art film crowd needs the NEA!
To leftists, "jingoistic" usually means "patriotic".
The Expendables was not patriotic, nor was it jingoistic — it just didn't exist on that spectrum.
We Were Soldiers and Tears of the Sun — and even Blackhawk Down to an extent — were patriotic.
On the other side, the closest thing we came to a purely jingoistic film in recent memory was probably Behind Enemy Lines. While our troops were portrayed in a positive light, the situation was not. Yes, the Russians were bad, but the Muslims were ANYTHING but victims.
I know the film had the mighty Gene Hackman, but it was Clinton apologist garbage. Instead of criticizing the war criminal tyrant for sending troops on overseas missions over 40 times without congressional approval, it was a ra-ra piece of propaganda.
But, then, let one little movie like An American Carol slip through, and it's a different story.
Exactly. The leftwing goosesteppers will not tolerate diversity of opinion.
Scott, according to our backward liberal regressives any movie that does not urinate on America and Americans is considered a jingoistic rah-rah film. From a psychological perspective I'd say American born liberals are self hating ingrates that want to see losers such as themselves portrayed on film. These bottom of the barrel liberal misfits and social rejects cannot relate to movies where real men and women are portrayed; they relate much better to Beavis & Butthead cartoons and fart joke movies.
Ah I see where you are coming from. That's pretty bloody stupid if you ask me and if you ask the average movie goer as they don't bother turning up to the anti American movies. Though I must say I do like a good fart joke too.
According to IMDB, actually John Avildsen directed it. Are they wrong? Or is that one of those in-name-only deals where he got fired part-way through but they kept his name on it, etc.?
American Carol was pretty jingoistic, I would say. Not a very good movie, but I still love it anyway.
I'm glad you found a drive-in! Nothing better!
Where does your humanity come from?
Remember, these leftists are typically devout atheists or liberation theologists, and equally likely committed Christophobes and Judeophobes.
By phrasing "rights" as inherent to humanity, they are trapped with denying the basis of their own secular humanism or conceding the point.
That a Believer understands that humanity, and thus rights, are derived from being endowed "in the image" of the Creator, does not have to be subjected to the standard vulgar attacks from the leftist in question.
Thus you never have to justify your faith, but they must justify denying theirs.
Oh, you're right! He directed II, III and IV–but not the first one. I didn't know that! I remembered him getting the Academy Award but it turns out it was for the screenplay. That'll teach me to fact-check before I comment.
While I think all of those are ridiculous positions to hold, the one that really makes me roll my eyes is the one about the Constitution giving us rights. If they were to actually read it, they'd see that the framers make it explicitly clear that we are born with those rights, endowed with them by the Creator, and that the Constitution merely defends those rights from the intrusive reach of the government.
I just saw The Expendables today. It's not patriotic or jingoistic. It's absurd, shoot-em-up fun, but it's no more patriotic than Avatar.
Bad guy –> American
Drug trade in tiny Latin country –> developed and pushed by an American
Woman's abusive boyfriend –> dead ringer for a soldier (wears camos around the house, plays basketball with other white dudes like him with military style haircuts)
Latin general/despot –> tricked by evil American and attempts to redeem himself with impassioned apology to his people
Aaaaaand we get the obligatory water-boarding scene which is later referred to as torture.
Did I enjoy watching it? Sure. But it was not at all patriotic. Some parts of it were absolutely laden with anti-American leftist talking points.
Sly loves the process of making films and he would be doing a lot more if the left that run this town would let him make the films he wants to make. They put him in a box as they do most of these big stars. The fact that Sly made this film with Avi and Lionsgate and it is doing great maybe Sly can make as many films that honor America as he wants.
Deny the leftist bastards, do it in film and we can break their hold on the pop culture.
From some things I have read, President Bush's problem with public speaking came from trying not to speak with his Texas accent. When he didn't worry about the accent he was an extremely effective public speaker.
I suspect most who think themselves as "intellectuals" aren't.
No kidding. Bush received degrees from both Yale and Harvard.
Being from a wealthy, prestigious family can get you IN to a good ivy league school, but it won't help you graduate. Those schools have no qualms about expelling you if you don't meet the standard, no matter who you are. Just ask the Kennedys.
I'm American and I didn't get that impression either. It was good guys vs bad guys, with lots of pretty explosions and gunfire. Always a good combination.
Heh, I think you and me may be the only ones that took that away from the movie. I had already heard about how "patriotic" the movie was when I walked in to the theater, but as the movie progressed, I was thinking, "How can this possibly be a right-leaning movie?!"
I did recognize the Bad American in charge of this poor Latin country and using it to push drug crops, the morally conflicted Latin military leader, as well as the obvious water boarding scene. If it wasn't for the water boarding scene, I might have taken the first two for simple action movie clichés.
It was a fun movie, but by no means patriotic, or anti-left.
The expendables was awesome.
So was Team America!
ouch
GW was railroaded by the left/left media and the GOP did very little to fend off his muggers.
loved the interview Stallone did with O'Reilly….John you are NOT an idiot…the writer at the Times qualifies…oh yeah….
I have no idea what public speaking actually has to do with intelligence. For myself, I'm no dummy. However, I stumble over my words at times because my brain goes much faster than my mouth. That makes me stupid? I think you could be right about President Bush trying to moderate his accent, so he stumbled more with his words. I notice Obama stumbling lots and hearing plenty "uh…..uh…..uh" when he has no teleprompter in front of him! But, that is because he's lying and must choose the words he THINKS we want to hear and not what is actually in his evil heart.
Yay Teddy! Thanks for the quote.
I don't get it. In my view the hero of the movie was the general's daughter. She had the moral strength to inspire Stallone and crew to action.
Agreed. They think they've won the argument just by making an assertion. When you insist they defend said assertion, they either collapse like bad souffles or threaten to bust your chops.
That guy is an idiot. He only has to look to the films of the Great Depression years to see just how they did NOT reflect the "confusing times".
Which characters were saying the "anti-American talking points"? You know, context and stuff. Just curious–haven't had a chance to see the film yet.
Hey if "sticking up for what is right" is a patriotic American standard, fine by me. Call me Mr. Flag waving American!
THANK YOU!!! WILL YOU FREAKING TELL OREILLY AND HANNITY and all those who think the Muslims HAVE A RIGHT enforced by the Constitution to put a mosque wherever they want! They don't!!!!!
Coolio… I think… a lil tweaky eyed in the middle of your comment, but I think I got through.
Jingoism has, in my opinion, been revised by the Progressive Soros Left to mean "America" mainly within America …as well as outside of America. In other words: Anti-American, Anti-US Constitution.
Pro-Socialism …and your religion or belief should be that of the government …no other. Sad, but true.
THANK YOU! I think Mark Levin is the only one I've heard actually coming out and SAYING this is about zoning issues and NOT RIGHTS!
If I have to jump through hoops, pay for permits and sacrifice a kidney just to trim my trees on my own property, there are definitely reasons to be made not to put this ridiculous "middle finger to America" up in New York.
O'Reilly is a lost cause, but Hannity is at least arguing strongly about it. He needs to bring up more issues than just the Imam though.
Oh yeah, and the Expendables was awesome!
Wow, O'Reilly letting a guest make their own actual point? Nah, never happens. They have to sneak it in like that. But Stallone was great! I have even more respect for him now.
The "morally conflicted" General rages about the "evil American disease" during his redemption speech for one.
Yeah, it's a pretty ridiculous idea that a Latin general/despot could never come up with the idea of a coca crop without an American leading the way.
And don't forget the glib one liners, they are like the icing on the 80s action movie cake.
Newsflash to the MSM and the Progressive/Socialist elite….. MOST AMERICANS ARE PATRIOTIC, AND LOVE OUR REPUBLIC!!!! Though Stallone's film is not overly American promoting, it is a fact (because of the flak over the film) that America is the "good guy"…… And I for one, am damn proud of that.
Yeah but the American right actually show a great deal of selfishness and nihilism and on a pretty regular basis. I mean why else would you make Ayn Rand a conservative icon?
Personally I'm a terrible public speaker. I certainly don't consider myself an idiot because of it.
One time my sister was commenting on what an idiot she thought Bush was, so I mentioned his education. She said that didn't prove anything, his family bought the degrees.
So I mentioned they were the same schools that Kerry, Kennedy and the Clintons attended. I asked if the degrees can be bought what does that mean about the intelligence of those people?
Shut her up on the subject.
The American right can show a great deal of selfishness and nihilism through their actions. The American left do show a great deal of selfishness and nihilism through their ideology. Big difference.
I completely agree. I consider myself an intellectual even though I hate the vast majority of intellectuals out there. But as Socrates said the unexamined life is not worth living so I am honest about my strengths and many weaknesses, a line too often quoted by intellectuals but too rarely practiced (Thomas Sowell has discussed this tendency far better than I could).
My grandmother (a very brilliant but practical lady) would tell me I can see that which doesn't affect me with perfect clarity, but am blind to situations that do. Day to day life is a real hassle; your toaster metaphor sounds like something I would use to describe myself.
That's why I love movies like The Expendables because for almost two hours in a theater and weeks thereafter in daydreams I can fantasize about being someone who can see the trees as well as the forest.
Perfect outline for how to respond to these freaks. I wish more conservatives were out there with responses like this rather than running for cover whenever the big R word (Racist!!) is hurled at them. Breitbart always puts his critics to shame by turning their hateful epithets against them. If we had more fighters like him we could reach more average Americans and take back this country.
No they don't
Yes but to the leftists it was not properly anti-american
The CIA guy running the country was kicked out of the CIA for what he was doing there and the real CIA was hiring the Exendables to take them out. Not acceptable. All CIA are bad and never can we show them doing anything good
The contact wanted the Expendables help to free her people so they can have democracy. Not acceptable. Poor people must always be told their only hope is put in place a communist leader
And lastly the waterboarding scene was not shown in a bad enough light. The waterboarded her because she was special and they did not want to hurt her. Not shoot her in the back of the head like the nobody;s. This is just making fun of the seriousness of the issue. After all waterboarding people should be shown as causing permanant damage or death even though it is specifically designed to do neither.
Very unaccceptable jingoism. I am sure Sly will be forced to go to James Cameron reeducation camp once Obama finally nationalizes the film industry.
No you get it
God forbid a Ho'wood film would show America and Americans in a good light, eh LA Times? Better to show what s scumbags we are and how your millions and palaces don't exist while you howl about how the hoi polloi live.
This is one of the best interviews I have seen this year. Hands down. Go Sly!
Nailed it, I almost blew coke out my nose when he said that!
I second the yea.
I have recently watched the film, and while it is not completely pro-American, it still does have many conservative (or at least anti-liberal) values. First of all, while one of the villains is ex CIA, the film clearly shows that the actual CIA is against what Munroe is doing. Munroe point blank states that he was thrown out of the CIA because they were against what he had planned by backing an Anti-American dictator. In addition, while they do not wish to deal with the situation publicly, the CIA does realize that the situation must be dealt with, hence the hiring of the Expendables. In addition, one of the protagonists (the General's daughter) is actively collaborating with the CIA to take down both Munroe and her father. As a result, she is the CIA' s designated contact for the Expendables on the island. So while the Munroe character might act (purposely or not) as a bone to the liberals, it is softened by the actions of the actual CIA.
This is a continuation of my previous post.
The movie does have the General regret some of his actions, but it is simply because he realizes that his daughter will not back down from trying to take down his regime, and he realizes that it will be a either him or her situation. However, the Castro/Chavez like General is willing to oppress the rest of his people because of his greed and lust for power. His troops are no better, as they are seen victimizing the population and are even willing to commit acts of rape.
