READER POLL: James Cameron and the Gulf Oil Spill

1. Is director James Cameron helping and truly trying to be helpful with the Gulf Oil Spill?
2. Is Cameron’s raging “those guys are morons” ego completely out of control but because he’s King of the Town That Funnels Millions in Campaign Cash to Obama, the Feds are now forced to appease the director and waste time doing so that could be spent mobilizing real solutions?

Yes, it’s a loaded question. But I don’t see Kevin Costner, who donated an oil spill invention he’s invested years and millions on, spending an inordinate amount of time preening before television cameras and microphones, calling people “morons,” and then wondering why those same “morons” aren’t interested in wasting time validating a needy director’s existence his help.
Also, don’t write Cameron off as just another fuzzy-headed, liberal filmmaker. He’s a powerful, multi-millionaire with heavy political connections. And when it comes to the powerful trying to edge their way into this kind of a crisis you have to ask yourself what their real agenda might be. It is purely altruistic or is there a mercenary heart at work here? If Joe Scarborough’s shameless gushing is any kind of an indicator, we’ll never get the answer to that question.
So weigh in below. We here at Big Hollywood don’t know the answer but at least we, unlike Jeff Wells, aren’t so hopelessly and shamelessly enamored and butt-boyed by the wealthy and powerful that we’re afraid to ask.

When I learned that they were consulting Cameron over the oil spill, I knew that our nation had become an international joke! We are in deep do-do when Hollywood becomes our expert of energy!
I sense a lot of fear in Cameron when he rants. He's probably worried that, just maybe, he *isn't" THE KING OF THE WORLD (N.B….that would be Obama). When it comes to the liberal agenda, you may be sure that Cameron will commit all the stupidity you could possibly imagine. To his credit, he will then commit a fair amount of stupidity that you *can't* even imagine.
"WE met with some top experts in the Marine community." What? He's a friggin movie producer. What the hell does he know? He's speaks a good game because he has the verbiage down pat. His ego should be plugging that hole. James Cameron go back to Pandora where you came from, or was it the Titanic he came from? Figures this Regime would call in a make believe creator to help with an disaster like this. Disgusting.
I have been reading so many ways to contain an oil spill and BHO ignores them and moves on to James Cameron. In 1979 the Mexican government had a bad oil spill and they didn't need a movie producer to stop it.
Do you even have to ask the questions? Of course the answers are:
1 – No
2 – Yes
I have to admit, though, I am curious about Costner's invention. I know the article said they'd agreed to test it, but I've never heard whether they actually have, or what the outcome of the tests may have been. Does anybody know?

My hat's off to Mr. Costner for donating his investment to help, adding another name to my list of actors and actresses I can respect. Cameron, on the other hand, needs to get out of the way so others can get things done.

Boy, that Cameron guy loves attention – I am still waiting for him to tell us what qualifies him to provide adivce on plugging a broken oil line…anyone? Bueller? <crickets>

Cameron's ego may have him convinced that he's qualified to help. I don't know the true extent of his knowledge regarding deep sea submersibles and robotic equipment, but I fail to see how he could possibly know more than those professionals who work solely with this type of equipment for the express purpose of building, maintaining and repairing deep sea oil wells.
If there are any "morons' responsible for this disaster, I nominate the Federal gov't AND the Left-wing EcoFascists who make us get oil from difficult locations. Mitigation would have been MUCH easier and faster if this had happened in shallower waters offshore, OR on land. But let's not forget that this is yet another crisis being exploited by Obama.

This country has some of the smartest and most resourceful people on this planet. There are quite a few with simple fixes to oil clean up not to mention the hard or theoretical ideas floating around and we aren't using them for what reason? Scientists and oil industry people are being ignored for what? We have increadable back-bones and minds here and the president and BP aren't using those ideas and people's inventions to get themselves and us out of this hole. Watching the live feed of oil gushing out is devistating not because an accident happened but because we can fix and start to help ourselves here if only they would let us.
Well considering that Bob Ballard PhD, whose ego is almost as big as Cameron's, was the person who supervised, assembled the crew and possessed the equipment that did all the deep underwater filming, I would say, just what ever he picked-up from him by accident.
I am ambivalent on Cameron. Yes he is an egotistical publicity-seeking director that is a taskmaster and even studio execs say he's an ass.
But he makes them money.
I assume he is talking about the 2 underwater subs he used to film Titanic, 12,000 feet below. That is an incredible amount of pressure. They are owned and run by a Russian company.
So 5,000 feet is "nothing".
I don't know of the engineering challenges facing BP but I am also surprised that it appears there was never any contingency plan for this platform "should things go wrong".
And I don't know how much resources BP would have to divert to placate Cameron. Remember all he is offering is a means for men to get down to the floor.
And nobody Cameron knows has the expertise of capping an out of control oil well.
I guess I would have to know more of (a) what the options are, (b) what Cameron is offering. Other than the means for men to get to the floor in the well's vicinity I can't see him offering much.
This thing is turning into a bad joke.
I have to respect Costner for quietly offering help – at BP's discretion. That is the model for Cameron.

Why would bp be interested in anything Cameron has to say?

I too was wondering what his credentials were, beyond the sci-fi genre, that is. If you're gonna bring in a Hollywood big-wig, bring in Clint Eastwood, at least he's cool.

I still think that the cast and crew from the movie "The Abyss" is the answer to how we can fix this leak. If Hollywood is the answer, might as well go to the experts. Get some of that liquid oxygen in you and there is no telling how deep you can go.
Maybe Cameron can use his Hollywood pull to get Team America World Police, the Thunderbirds or Iron Man to help stop the leak and clean the spill.

How about the director of that movie about a ship that sank, it had a large cast… the ship was really big… the actress had large breasts and did a nude scene… or what was the name of that movie???
The entire world gets snookered from time to time, so they shouldn't make fun of us too much. For example, a fat galoot from Tennessee has convinced a sizeable number of world citizens that the earth is going to look like Venus very soon if they do not buy lots of carbon credits from him.

Hats off to James Cameron for at least highlighting the plight of the wildlife damage that the Gulf oil spill has been responsible for. With a host of popular movie releases like Avatar under his belt he simply could count his gold from his movie profits and sit on his laurels. Instead the guy is willing to stand up and be counted for an environmental cause he believes in, so how about cutting him some slack?
Cameron does always seem to be craving publicity. Did he help out on the oil spill at all? Perhaps his ego should stick to what he is good at and let the other professionals do their own work!
