Why the Gratuitous Bush-Bash in ‘Blind Side’? — I’ll Tell You Why…
by John NolteIn another scene, set at one of those dreary government offices where bored civil servants provide occasional slow-motion service to frustrated citizens, Leigh Anne demands to know who is in charge. The clerk points, in a non-sequitur nonpareil, to a portrait of then-president George W. Bush. — John Boot in Pajamas Media
You need not work in Hollywood to understand that this is the single most intolerant industry in America today — just watch their product. I wasn’t surprised to learn from Christian Toto that ”The Blind Side” filmmakers couldn’t control themselves. Unless it’s outside the mainstream Hollywood system, a film marketed to traditional American conservatives — much less, Southern Christians! — has to hit us with a leftist sucker punch one way or another. It’s an unwritten rule…

Hollywood is high school and if you want to sit at the cool kids’ table (i.e. work) you better fit in, and if you’ve been involved in the writing, directing or producing of a film sympathetic towards the most hated demographic (yes, even more hated than terrorists — again, watch the product) in the 9-0 zip code, you had better inoculate yourself.
And that’s what the gratuitous, unnecessary, jarring, take-you-out-of-the-movie shot at Bush is: an inoculation. The filmmakers want to work again; they want to be invited to all the right parties. But if you’re remembered as the person involved in bringing to life a movie only Glenn Beck could love, no matter how big of a hit, that’s not a good thing on the ole’ resume’.
There are notable exceptions, but working in Hollywood — an industry built on social interaction — means getting along with Leftists, and Leftists are religious, regional and ideological bigots of the worst order. The smart people involved in the making of “The Blind Side” knew the Bush shot was bad storytelling — was what what John Boot described as ”a non-sequitur nonpareil” — they just felt, for whatever reason (their own bigotry or career survival), that it was worth it.
Hollywood is not money or profit-driven. This is an industry engaged in an ideological war with traditional conservative America that doesn’t mind making a profit, but never will at the expense of the cause. Everyone involved in the making of “Blind Side” knew an unnecessary partisan shot at Bush would turn people off. They all knew they were insulting the very audience the film was marketed at for no reason other than to insult them. But there was absolutely no way in hell this thing was going to see the light of day without something for the Hollywood bigots to snicker over.
This is their sandbox, and there’s a ring to kiss if you want to play.

You know, you could read this another way. You could see it as a pot-shot against those *cough* Obama *cough* who continue to blame Bush for everything. This DMV worker, rather than taking responsibility for her own slacker work ethic, points to Bush as if to say it's his fault. I would need to see the whole thing in context. But it might be making fun of the constant I inherited this mess mentality we've been subjected to ever since Zero took office.
is this a game of gotcha? Or is it an attempt to slip something by and laugh if we miss it?
High school indeed.
The same games, the same gossip, the same self absorbsion the same belief that they know more than anyone else
maybe it is a "hey it's the government, what cha gonna do?" thing.
That says it all. If Hollywood wasn't a liberal ideologue's paradise, we'd see a heck of a lot more movies like Gran Torino taking awards while worthless movies like Milk would be tossed into the wind.
Oh, it's most likely a pointless, and inexplicable, shot at Bush. I'm just hoping that it's meant to be something else. But I'm most likely being way too optimistic.
Things can't stay this way. The digital revolution is underway. A feature film can be made now for $20K, without the wiff of any guild or union.
Arrested development. And trust me, it's not limited to Hollywood. I run into the exact same thing pretty much every day.
Basically it comes down to 'I'm smart and if you don't agree with me, they you're a poo-poo head.'
Christian Toto's word is good enough for me. John Boot's review simply conformed what I already suspected.
it is I work with a woman who for now reason the other day started talking about how bad things were during "Bush Sr.'s second term." you mean Clinton's first?
The left can't let anything go (even if they are wrong about it), geez it's been 20 years! Move on! (.org)
Boy, she (Bullock/James) certainly looks rough around the edges. __
She's not ageing very well being married to rebel outlaw biker trash types. It's probably just the company she keep's in hollywood. The clingy, elective surgery, deodorant optional, skin whitening (orangening?)crowd.____
No offense outlaw biker trash types………….I've got some broken wings on my jacket.
Yeah. It was too much to hope for, wasn't it?
As someone within the industry, I expect that you have excellent insight on it's machinations.Your take on the Hollywood mindset strikes me as as being exactly correct . . . Hollywood high school "kool kids" and with a mean streak to boot.
A little harsh on her hubby? Jesse James has always struck me as a hard working entrepreneur, a self made guy & hardly trash. And she actually spent most of her time between films outside of California, I believe, although I think she lives in California with her husband.
Mr. Nolte, while I agree with your assessment of Hollywood in this case, I think it is much more cynical than just "religious bigotry" and "ring kissing". I believe these attacks on Bush are going to continue and become even more vitriolic in their nature. The reason is that the Left needs to keep Bush's "perceived" failures at the forefront of American's minds. This way they can control the damage of the historic embarrassing failures that Obama's Administration is racking up on a weekly basis, especially within foreign policy. This is how the Left operates, instead of owning up to the responsibility of "their own" current failures they will always just point the finger at someone else and say 'but look at what that guy (Bush) did".
This may be their sandbox, but it more closely resembles a well used litter box.
A little editing instead of a "no offense" line would be a better way to fly.
Last time I was in the land of fruits and nuts, I stopped by WCC to see what all the buzz was about. Lotsa cool stuff, not my style, cool nonetheless.
Jesse is a fine example of the American Dream, did it himself, answers to no one, married a movie star.
I doubt he is climbing on board the tax the crap outta me bandwagon.
@John Nolte
Cal Thomas made this comment about conservatives and Hollywood:
The victim thing is getting old. Conservatives have a significant presence in virtually every venue they like to denounce. That includes government (though not this one) and especially the media. Talk radio rules and the rulers are conservatives. Fox News Channel dominates the ratings. The conservative presence in academia lags, but there are universities that do not revise American history and mock religious values. Movies? There are some with solid conservative principles, such as Sandra Bullock’s latest film, The Blind Side. Will conservatives go see it, or are they more comfortable denouncing “Hollywood”? How about reinforcements for those conservatives already “making it” in the mainstream media?
http://www.worldmag.com/webextra/16126
So, is Thomas right? Why or why not?
I agree with most of the points in his article, except for one: ""Movies? There are some with solid conservative principles, such as Sandra Bullock’s latest film, The Blind Side." From what I've read about the movie so far, the Conservative Christians are all portrayed as dingbats and cartoon characters.
Bullock used to look pretty good a long time ago, but I haven't found her attractive in a while. And the only movie where I was impressed with her acting was "Speed," although I haven't seen a lot of her other stuff.
Another movie to not see. I can't some movies today because I would throw up if some left nut was in the lead. i guess I should have known Bulock would be one of them.
A pot shot or two at Bush doesn't bother me. How do they portray the Christians family? As compassionate, warm-hearted Americans who opened their homes and their hearts to a trouble young man? Or as quirky cartoon characters who, despite their antiquated ideals, and disapproving glares from their snobby Church pals, were able to overcome their right-wing racial prejudices, and befriend a person of color?
As awful as Obama is, what's so great about Bush? Am I the only one who considers Bush a statist just like any democrat? If you believe in "limited government" like I do than Bush was an awful president. Bush constantly called himself "conservative" but look at his record.
1) pharmaceutical entitlements
federal take over of education (no child left behind)
2) agriculture subsidies
3) steel tariffs
4) campaign finance reform
5) bank bailouts
6) beginning auto bail-outs
7) patriot act (I love how all the dipshits claimed we needed to ignore the 4th amendment because of security, but we have an Army Major asking an Al Qaeda recruiter for help with his terrorism and neither the FBI nor the Army did anything!)

Without having seen the scene, it does seem troubling. As I understand the story, there should be little interaction with federal agencies, except perhaps for the IRS. A domestic adoption, or foster placement, could potentially have tax implications, but I can't see any other federal issues. Granted there would be many state or local agencies to be dealt with, but the President of the United States has no authority over them. Have we become so ingrained to the idea of Washington controlling everything that this distinction is missed?
Excuse me for pointing out the obvious, but aren't DMVs run by state agencies rather than the Federal government? Not only are the filmmakers furthering an agenda, but they can't get their facts straight.
When I was growing up, there was a kid name Arthur who was possibly the only kid more un-cool and out of it and ostracized than I was. I'm not proud of this (and wherever you are, Arthur, I apologize), but I used to make fun of Arthur just to show other kids that I was, at least, not Arthur, and so they would mock Arthur and not me. Bush is the "liberals'" Arthur. No matter what stupid stuff they believe and promulgate–and it's ironic that a group of people who see themselves as some kind of intellectual elite believe nonsense the kid with the bajo from DELIVERANCE is probably too smart to fall for–they can always point to Bush and say, "Hey, we're at least smarter than THAT guy." (Although I have seen no evidence to support this.) By making fun of Bush, they show they're cool kids, too.
Bullock's movie where she was an FBI agent undercover as beauty contest contestant had a completely off-the-wall gratuitous slam at Cheney. That did it for me for anything with her in it. Likewise, the recent Julia Child movie with slams against McCarthy and Republicans turned me off Streep and Ephron.
She has a ranch here in Austin,TX. Right next to the river.
Also — Isn't it terribly RACIST? This is a black woman answering Bullock's query..and this black woman's answer is senseless, responsibility-shirking and mean-spirited. That poor black woman in the DMV is portrayed as a complete unaccountable DOLT.
Leave it to Libs to cut off their nose to spite their face.
Actually, some Black people working for local and state agencies ARE like this.
As a native of Washington DC, I'm speaking from experience.

How hysterical. My recent post to the last Leigh Scott contribution stated this. When Hollywood productions start to appear rather conservative they covertly insert the Bush or the Nixon photo on the wall to remind everyone that Republicans are the root of all evil. And here you are telling me they aren't even covert about it?
Ready. Aim. Fire. Great Sandra. You officially s__k too.
As far as the Left is concerned, being portrayed as dingbat cartoon charactes is considered favorable treatment. What more do they want? Honesty? As they would say, "Stay classy, wingnuts!"
Relatively, the jab at Bush isn't so bad. Everyone should see a the movie just because it's the only film that depicts conservative christians in a positive light. Tell me of anything else out of Hollywood that does that…EVER.
Here's my online review of the movie:

Sorry Hollywierd.
That just cemented my decision to stay home.
What's really getting old is the constant pushing of a liberal agenda on TV. Everytime I turn something on I get hit over the head with something green…..
If Thomas wants to whine about something, let him whine about that….
I will agree with you, conservative Bush was not. But I am upset that he was so HATED. On a personal level, I felt bad for the man. I was never a huge fan of his presidency, but it never is right when the attacks on him were so personal. I'd argue that most folks had no idea exactly what Bush did and didn't do as president. People should have done as you did in your post- stick to policy.
I think you give them too much credit. For the most part, the vast majority afflicted with BDS, they just can't be bothered to think for themselves, which is where people like Jon Stewart come in.
Much easier and quicker to simple see what other "cool" people are doing, and then copy them.
"Hollywood is high school and if you want to sit at the cool kids’ table (i.e. work) you better fit in, and if you’ve been involved in the writing, directing or producing of a film sympathetic towards the most hated demographic (yes, even more hated than terrorists — again, watch the product) in the 9-0 zip code, you had better inoculate yourself."
It is high school. But even more damning than that it is a high school do-over for a bunch of people who were not at all cool the first time around and resentment and hostility are etched into their DNA as a result of it.
Just read "Lost on Planet China", and the author (or publisher?) stuck an anti-Republican bash in about every 40 pages. The bashes were such non-sequiturs, and appeared at such regular intervals, that I couldn't help but think they were inserted "post-production".
No, Bush was almost as much of a statist – and it's really sad that the liberals apparently think he wasn't statist ENOUGH. It's really sad that he is the most conservative President since Reagan, and yet he STILL gets attacked as being too conservative.
I saw that only as a great example of how Bush is the target for undeserved blame by the very people responsible for the problem at hand. I am far more concerned about the scene where the tutor confides secretly that she is a Democrat as if Republicans have been brow beating them into living closeted lives which is a complete reversal of the truth.
Anybody who characterizes the facts as "whining" has already lost me. The fact that we have talk radio doesn't change anything we say here about Hollywood.
I go to see a movie about twice a year because of the drek Hollywood puts out and I don't want support the life styles of those creeps. My rule is that if the authors or directors of a movie or TV program want to send me a message, I'm only too happy to send one back to them.
To those that are defending this movie with the justification of "It's the only movie that shows conservatives Christians in a positive light!"
In the movie, the Tim McGraw/Sandra Bullock family *is* shown to be Christian and politically conservative but it's intimated they naturally harbor that sweet, Southern racism and intolerance… this bubbles up when Tim McGraw's character hires a lefty-tutor for their adopted African-American son and remarks to Sandra Bullock's character: "Who ever thought we would have a black son before we knew a Democrat?"
In the movie, it's the family's exposure to the wonderfully open minded lefty tutor and the adopted African-American son that makes them better people. Not their belief in a loving God or in the freedoms of the American Way.
So to say: "Don't let the throwaway line about Bush keep you from seeing this movie" is not a solid defense. These are not throwaway lines–it's a pattern of behavior.
And I was going to go see that movie. Oh well, you just saved me and my family some money. Thanks for the heads up.
Scott – I was THIS close to seeing the film despite the Bush swat (I felt I could overlook it). But the 'pattern of behavior' you just outlined means I'm not seeing this film. Thank you.
Thank you, TSgt. I should have expected that 'evil Republicans repress we saintly Democrats' swipe with Kathy Bates in the film but I was hoping not. I'm not seeing this film. Thank you for sparing me the expense.
I hated the trailer to this movie and now that I have heard of the propoganda involved, I KNOW I'm not going to see it. Unfortunately Sandra Bullock will probably get an Oscar because of the Erin Brocovitch (a horrible movie) factor.
Well since its based on a true story, don't you think the real family might be a little offended at the examples you guys posted here if they were truly conservatives? I wonder what their thoughts are on this and if they had any content control. They may or may not be the conservatives you think they are.
Not only that line in the movie, but in Parade magazine, SB was quoted that she knew about how raciest the South is because she's from there. She was born in Alexandria, Va, but grew up in Germany . She is not from the South nor does she know the first thing about it
no, its "you're an ignorant redneck that luvs Palin"
but, what do you expect from the dkos, du, huffypoo gang – the best of hate America liberals
In the scene, LeighAnn (Bullock) is taking Michael to the TN DMV to get his driver's license. It's a problem because he does not have a birth certificate, hence the difficulty with a gubmint worker. The scene is logical, not contrived. Go see it; except for the obligatory Bush bashing reference, it's a good movie.
Tender Mercies, among others.
I have come across several books by well known authors whose characters have nothing political about them who gratuitously insert anti republican, anti conservative and (most often) anti Bush propaganda into their character's mouths… for no reason.
Who is the bad guy usually? A republican. The nut? Some conservative. The guy to stupid to wipe the drool escaping from his lower lip? A bush voter.
It is ENDLESS.
I am inches away from not watching a show I consider to be the funniest around because of the anti conservative, anti Christian beatdowns they so often incorporate into their shows. It is just to much to tolerate.
My general rule these days is if you mock me, you are off the list. Maybe my list should be "You have me if you can manage not to insult me. Much easier.
Especially if ssome form of the Fairness Doctrine passes "Constitutional" muster. Then Talk Radio for Conservatives will change forever. But there is always the Internet…what, they are trying to regulate that too? Oh, well nevermind then.
So… gratuitous shots at Bush are now kind of like the gratuitous topless/ nude shots in movies?
Sandra Bullock is a human woman. She is getting older, just as everyone reading this post is getting older. It has been quite some time since she broke onto the film scene. Every person ages differently. Every person has different factors that age them uniquely.
Not that Sandra is affected yet, but as a woman's estrogen decreases, if she chooses not to take a lot of hormones, her skin can age quicker, but her overall health may be better. It's a trade off. From what I understand, Sandra and her husband are going through a lot of child custody issues with his daughter. Stress and sleepless nights alone can age a person.
I think everyone of you who feels comfortable commenting negatively about Sandra's looking "rough around the edges," needs to ask yourselves if you would say the same about Bruce Willis or another male star.
Good grief.

I didn't want to vote for Bush in 2000 and don't much like him now, but Hollywood isn't just bashing Bush when they bash Bush. Though he was no conservative, he is the stand-in for conservative Americans as far as Hollywood is concerned.
I liked the short-lived show the Unusuals, but the idiot cop everyone hated just happened to have a McCain photo on his desk (echoing a statement I made above, I must point out that I despise McCain, but to Hollywood, a Republican is every conservative). Also, an A-Team episode featured an evil warden who forced his prisoners to fight to the death. He, naturally, had a picture of Reagan on his wall.

I hope it doesn't get back to your colleagues that you are concerned about how Christian conservatives are portrayed.
What's the show?
Sounds like Stephen King. Post-Dreamcatcher, he just loves the good ol' Bush bash.
It was a great film. I read about the controversy before hand and – honestly it wasn't even that bad. The joke was a stab at government – government is poorly run and people keep their jobs. Could the camera have cut to something else, probably – but puh-leeze – Bush was the head of the Government when the story took place – so it's not entirely incorrect. I voted for Bush twice and sometimes I wonder if I made the right choice. The right choice here is to support this film because it is a great film – albeit a minor issue which shouldn't even be an issue – but hey if the controversy stirs up enough the film will get more publicity and maybe a bigger audience – and for that I will be happy.
Family Guy.

As I said, never met either of them but in my judgement anyone with ink like that is low class trash.
This is nothing knew. Looking at old movies on TCM you'll hear Left points of view in dialogue. It's not overt but subtle enough to frame an opinion. It's a bit like all those war flicks in which the Nazis are portrayed as aristocrats (e.g somebody called "the Baron) or members of the wealthy upper class cozying up to elegantly unformed big shots. Seems that no workers, the salt of the Earth to Lefties, ever supported Hitler. No, it was those upper crust capitalist a'holes.we have to blame.
Is it the Social Security office? I don't think it is a Bush bash. The woman doing the "bashing" is a lazy obnoxious government worker. How is her opinion that Bush is responsible for her and her cohorts bad behavior taken seriously. If the screenwriters did this to please Left Hollywood then its really backhanded.
I have a ring located at approximately the middle of my buttocks that Hollywood can kiss.
Yeah, "Substance", Bush is a stupid man who accidentally has an MBA from Harvard (unlike AlGore who flunked out of both Vanderbilt Law and Divinity Schools) and a bad President who kept us safe from another 9/11 attack and brought the economy back after the trillion-dollar loss it suffered then (oh, you DO know that it was after the Democrats took over Congress in 2006 that the recession set in, right?).
i'm taking my family to see it. and am going to warn them of that scene. & yes, Bush was probably in office for two years. feds dont run dmv, nor do they run most social welfare programs, those are communist democrat agendas. we should support the film and bring up the Bush thing all the time… AS A DEBATE CUE with liberals, then hook em a left… BUSH represents GOVT!! The family represents CONSERVATIVE values… GO SEE IT.
read the NYTIMES MAGAZINE 10 page article on this story! its a great story and depicts public education during…. CLINTON YEARS!!! Before "no child left behind" …. HORRIFIC!!!!! google search it… great story. teary.
Talk radio just means we now have a venue to complain about how we're treated in the pop culture. Inroads are not equality.
Nooooo! Everytime I see a preview for a movie that sounds interesting, I find out some leftist robot inserted a Bush Bash! Same reason I've quit going to concerts – hacks me off to pay $50+ so someone can make fun of people like me. Please tell me the conservative Hollywood tsunami is about to hit!
this is based on a true story. When was the true story taking place? if it was the 90s, it might not be a slam at President Bush, it could be a fairly accurate portrayal of the DMV during the administration of GOV. Bush. Many goverment offices have a picture of the chief of state (federals would have president obama) and state offices like DMV would have the appropriate gov.
If it was a slight, and I don't think it was, then it was so small that sometimes, I think that conservatives raising these are bigger pussies that than the liberals who complain about everything.
So what's new? It's called what it has always been, prostitution. Selling oneself for monetary gain, period! Nothing new here! Move along.
I may, but I don't go to many movies. And thank you for the reply. But it does tend to reinforce the notion that it is simply Bush bashing. The person "in charge" would be the Governor of Tennessee. Unfortunately, this distinction is probably lost on many Americans.
Think I'll read the book.
And this is why Hollywood has not received a dime of my money since 2000. The Blind Side was going to be my first trip to the movies in 10 years, I guess my streak will live for at least another year.
What the heck are you talking about? Bullock is in fantastic shape and she's a brunette whose hair has been colored for the movie, washing her out.
It's fine that you liked the movie but enough with the 'it's not entirely incorrect because Bush was the head of government' nonsense. The DMV is a state agency. In IL, the IL Sec. of State's photo is in the DMV. Not caring about it being in the movie is one thing, but not being able to see it for what it was (a gratuitous shot) is another. Heck, I didn't even vote for Bush and I'm sick of this liberal crap.
I haven't seen a movie at a theater since The Passion of The Christ and refuse to attend any c… they put out. I rarely even rent movies any longer. Until the producers start making decent movies, there will be a reflux of people not attending these abhorrent excuses for entertainment.

It sounds like a standard anti-bureaucracy joke to me. President Bush just happened to be in office at the time this story takes place. I like to think that if Oher had come of age during the Clinton years, the photo would have been of President Bill. No matter how hard I try to convince myself, however, I can't ever see President Obama's photo being used in such a way.
You know what, from now on I'm not even going to bother debating our trolls. I'm just going to identify the logical fallacies they're using and leave my comments at that.
Her best work was in Demolition Man, opposite Stallone. Great lines.
The story takes place when Bush is president. Besides, Bush was governor of Texas, not Tennessee. Also, I doubt there's any DMV that has a picture of the POTUS.
If you don't think this was an intentional (and unrelated to the story) dig, you're naive. In an early post here on BH, the writer was talking about the liberal echo chamber that is Hollywood and how it never occurs to any of them that anyone might be a conservative. He wrote how he had been in a meeting related to a movie or program and a clip was shown depicting how a photo of Cheney was planted as a dig and they all laughed.
It doesn't matter that it appears minor in the context of the movie, it's their smug, condescending, and manipulative nature and how they intentionally abuse their position to pull this stuff.
Me too. Worst ? I'm really just sick of explaining to my son that mommy won't spend money she doesn't have ,
(nor would I spend it if I still had a job,) to reward people who set out to insult me and my son, using my son to do it, because he wants to go see it, and they are just sure I'll overlook the kick in the mouth and take him.
It's like being dumped into the gift shop at the end of every ride at Disney…You just know you're gonna have to say no to your kid…gee that's fun.
It probably is just another pointless, inexplicable shot at Bush. Those stopped bothering me a long time ago.
While I don't like the fact that Hollywood feels compelled to insert them where they don't belong, this one is way, way down on my list of things to be worried about.
Demolition Man is underrated anyway – it´s as good and timely a satire of political correctness and the nanny state as anything we are likely to see coming out of Hollywood.
Yeah, except those gratuitous shots were a net gain in terms of audiences. And us males didn´t detest them at the time, if I remember correctly. I mean, 1982: Phoebe Cates wet and topless … 2009: bad Bush joke. And they wonder why we think the country is going straight to heck!
Good observation. There was a successful campaign to paint the nazis as "reactionary" militarists or tools of big business – in other words, the opposite of socialists and communists who of course only want your best – when in fact they were social(ist) revolutionaries who hated society and its pillars (including the aristocratic military elite) just as much as their radical opponents on the left. Given that nothing stopped the nazis from expropriating jewish businesses and in many cases murdering the owners, it seems to me that capital was not powerful enough.
That's right. Our DMV has a picture of Ah-nold, not Obama.
What? She is in her mid-forties. I think she looks pretty good. 99% of people wish they aged that well but don´t. I´m sure she had some "work done", but it´s not very obvious.
Yeah, but I'm tired of us conservatives taking it on the chin (even by proxy) and saying "it's not so bad." When I see an equivalent number of jabs at the Clintons or Obamas, either in number or vitriol, then I'll be sanguine about it.
'Trauma' is a new TV show presumably the would like to built an audience, a recent episode contained a completely gratuitous whack at Palin, I, like millions of others, thought 'here we go again, where's the remote' . Building a following by punching half the country in the mouth, how' s that workin' for ya Hollywood?
Hollywood, like the Mainstream Media, used to be a lot more fair and balanced. As we all know, those days are long gone, having been replaced by a jaw-dropping, left-leaning, double standard.
But things can and do change. The monopoly the MM had over the news is crubling like the Berlin Wall — and I think the same thing could happen to Hollywood. A new group of filmmakers and distributors must emerge. And if they create films that are honest and fair, people will come. Millions of people.
Don't let these two tiny items in the film deter you from seeing it. It's an excellent film, with some great acting, hilarious funny bits (the little brother is awesome!), and overall really worthwhile, even if you're not into football. Yeah, the tutor being a Dem and the DMV pointing to Bush (yeah, right…this was a Tennessee DMV, so it shoulda been the TN gov's picture, not the President's but whatever) are irritating but it's worth ignoring those cuz the film is that good.
Sigh. I really wanted to see this film, too. This reminds me of the last movie I saw in theaters, Julie & Julia, which managed to get a couple of jabs in about Republicans. I just want to watch a movie to be entertained and escape from reality for a couple of hours, not to hear more hatred for Bush and Republicans. Is that too much to ask from these Hollywood lefties? It's a shame because I LOVE to go to the movies and used to be willing to fork over my hard-earned dough to be entertained by them, but not any more.
I would consider this a conservative movie, with Christian values, with one liberal potshot. Get over it!
Sandra Bullock can't go one movie without telling her audience she knows best. And to think she unleashed George Lopez on us. All those latinos who found so much in America are rejecting what made them want to come here! Irony.
Tim and Faith got out of Nashville and thought the Hollywood crowd must know best. They are so cultured! We hate Bush too. Sell outs. Singing on the Oscars was a small price to pay for her soul.
Didn't the real woman who adopted this kid look alot better? More refined? Classier?? I think SB looks trashy(at least in the ads/commercials).
My wife and I are Christians. We were looking forward to this movie. Now we will not go. It's not that we're thin skinned but we're just tired as being painted as nuts. We do many things to care for the poor and we try to walk in love. We want to start a woman’s shelter in the near future. We must be some horrible people for Hollywood to hate us so much or could it be as JESUS said, "remember, they hated me first". Yeah, it sounds like we're in good company.
My God, have any of you watched this movie? Some of the replies indicate you are responding to nothing but the other messages with no first hand knowldege of the movie. It's a simple movie, with one 2 second nod to Presidentn Bush. It's about a family with some money accidentally taking a poor kid in and learning something from him. That's all it is. It's not a political statement at all. Of if it is, look at it this way:
What would Jesus do????????
[...] say it’s a sports movie, and we like our sports movies sans politics. Read conservative blogger Nolte’s opinion and read the L.A. Times posting and decide for [...]
Please see Patrick Goldstein's Big Picture blog with Hancock's response and you will realize what a tempest in a teapot this all is.
Since none of these numbskulls has bothered to see the movie, which actually endorses so-called "conservative values" and paints evangelicals in a favorable light, here is the director himself…http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/the_big_picture/2...
The premise of Nolte's rant is absurb. He doesn't know anything about Hollywood, who works there, or anyone associated with this particular film. Plenty to say about all of the above, though.
I love the fact that Democrats run Hollywood and you red neck, stupid, backward, hillbilly Republicans watch it. The reality is most of you aren't intelligent enough to research the real facts behind the issues, so we have to cram it down your dumb ass throats in hopes that one day it will actually sink into your inbred brains.
In my opinion we've been dragging the South into modern civilization ever since the Civil War. I say give them what they've always wanted… their own independance. They could even name it George Bush Land. Within 5 years they will have a nation of 20 rich people, crooked politicians and thousands of poor people.
You have no money you idiot because you keep voting for Republicans! lol
You're right. The movie does depict them in a positive light. They did seem intelligent. Too bad the rest of you aren't like that then perhaps Barack could get something done in Washington.
Can you even spell or punctuate? lol
Who cares, you idiot!
