‘Progressive’ Hollywood Fails Women Where Old Studio System Did Not
by John Nolte
Oscar season approaches, which means that once again it’s time for the annual cry of … There-Are-No-Good-Roles-For-Women! Maybe “cry” isn’t the best word. ”Whine” is more suitable — from a self-inflicted wound. Here’s a taste of this year’s first-whine from a Hollywood Reporter story titled: Shallow Pool for Oscar’s Actress Contenders:
How shallow is the pool? Some are talking about performances such as Sandra Bullock’s in the feel-good film “The Blind Side
The lack of depth has led to a slew of awards-season chatter, from the expected downplaying — all categories are cyclical — to blanket explanations about studios making fewer awards movies in general. …
But it also highlights that, for all the strides made by the women behind the camera, the women in front of them can still be subject to the old prejudices. Indeed, the more cynical in town — including at least one actress awards-contender — say that the director and actress trends are hardly a coincidence. Many female directors, they argue, can feel pressure to cast a preponderance of strong male leads to negate the perception that theirs is a female-oriented film.
The article is simply wrong on one very important point. These aren’t “old prejudices,” these are new prejudices.
Back in the bad old studio days when a handful of Republican men ran everything, women ruled. Well, maybe not “ruled,” but they were a steady force at the box office because those Republican men spent millions grooming girls into movie stars and building A-pictures around them. (And for a while, Rita Hayworth did rule Columbia.)

At one time or another, Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn, Barbara Stanwyck, Olivia De Havilland, Jean Harlow, Mae West, Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer, Janet Gaynor, Mae West, Claudette Colbert, Ginger Rogers, Myrna Loy, Alice Faye, Judy Garland, Ingrid Bergman, Bette Grable, Esther Williams, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly and many, many others worked as regularly and earned nearly as much success (and sometimes more) as their male counterparts in all kinds of films, including big-budget prestige pictures that put many butts in many seats. At one time or another, each was was a stand-alone movie star and many enjoyed long legendary careers.
Did a paternalistic and sometimes sexist system force these women to fight for decent roles in-between casting couch wrestling sessions? Of course, but anyone who wants to argue something’s changed should drop me an email inquiring about a bridge for sale.
But the real story is just how many of those fights were won allowing these immortals to leave behind a wealth of films loaded with strong, dignified, feminine performances that will live for as long as there’s civilization. And what won those sometimes historic battles wasn’t some sense of entitlement over ”fairness.” These women were as tough as they were talented.
So what changed?
Well, you tell me.

Forty years ago the left started their takeover of the film industry. Now that they own it fully there are more women in executive positions than ever before, and yet most every year you can hear the scrape of a barrel bottom when Oscar nominations are announced.
Sounds to me like some sensitivity training is in order.
But it’s really about the free market. Women don’t draw like they once did and you can trace the reason for that to the roles and the actresses themselves. Somewhere along the line, ”acting like men” became confused with strength, and nudity and sex with romance. Other than a natural charisma and a dab of talent, the secret to stardom is retaining enough sense of mystery to allow audiences to project what they want on you, and nothing breaks that spell quicker than the literal and figurative baring of the ass.
On the big screen, as in real life, it’s hard to respect someone you’ve just seen tramp around cussing like R. Lee Ermey in “Full Metal Jacket.” For the men in the audience, the illusion is shattered (lust fades, love lasts forever) … for the women, they can no longer relate. Offscreen, no one likes a loudmouth trashing who you are and what you believe in. You can sum the whole problem up in a word … ”class.”

But in the true spirit of socialism, present-day Hollywood’s solution is not an attempt to rebuild the female movie star but to foster equality through the dragging down of the male star.
The death of the movie star is no longer just a “woman’s problem.” Narcissism is an equal-opportunity affliction and without those sexist, paternalistic conservative studio bosses to look out for their shared interests, both male and female stars have worked overtime to deconstruct themselves in the eyes of the public. And so…
…today the chickens and roosters are coming home to roost.

"[T]o blanket explanations about studios making fewer awards movies in general. …"
Is that an industry phrase or just really poor grammar?
many good points are made here…
Conservatives actually like strong women; it's the liberals who tend to 'objectify' them. The adult film industry is agood example- heavily left wing yet male dominated and obsessed with portraying womenin the worst possible ways. Not to say all lefties are like that- but it is apointed example.
What they call 'liberation' others see as subjugation. Ergo the bad roles, and even worse actresses. Liberal males, being mostly weaklings by nature (sorry for the sweeping generalizations, but if the shoe fits) don't appreciate strong women- which is why instead of Crawford or Davis you have Sarandon- or Pam Anderson.
Hollywood is in desperate straights- and it's all because of their goony, self serving, hypocritical ideology…
The old saying, liberal women want a man in touch with his feelings, conservative women want a man who can fix the gutters.
Wife had me fixing mine last week.
I wouldn't mind a man who is in touch with his feelings and can fix the gutters, balance is the key
My husband cried when our dog died. But he has also killed 3 rats this week by bashing their heads against our fence. Talk about a real man.
We lost two dogs this past year, one to cancer, the other to old age. There were tears.

"Awards movies" is italicized because it is a noun phrase, "awards movies" being movies the studios make in hopes that they will win awards such as the Oscar, Golden Globe etc. This is opposed to a movies such as Scary Movie or Talledega Nights that they know won't have award appeal but they hope will earn a lot of revenue.
If you read the sentence that way it may make more sense.
The list of actresses I will NEVER watch on screen just grows longer by the day. If one of those foul-mouthed, 'hate America' things shows up in the billing, I don't even bother to ask what the movie's about or whether it's any good. If that vile actress is in it – Whack! – the film's in the trash can.
That's a tough year, man. Sorry for your loss.
It's hardly a women-only issue. There aren't any great men actors now, either. Nor are there great roles. As Norma Desmond put it, it's the pictures that got small.
Urgh, lately I became allergic to seeing Portman's pictures, especially after the Polanski petition and totalitarian style vegetarianism/veganism stance. Her endorsement of Obama is enraging to say the least, as a fellow Israeli it's just boggles my mind that someone who seems to care (according to her words) about Israel would vote for Obama. Apparently Liberal Jews need a healthy does of anti-Semitism here and there to put some common sense into their heads, they should live in Russia for a while (I used to live there) , yep that's a good remedy for Jews who embrace false Messiahs and dumb ideas.
Shalom.
I opened the page and was scrolling down so I could only see the top of Sarandon's head and I thought the picture was of Carrot Top. LOL.
I am with you Carolyn. I have an ever growing list of actors and actresses I just will not watch. I have never seen an episode of "30 Rock" because Alec Baldwin stars in it. He is a charter member of my list.
Good article. On and off-screen–for men and women–a little modesty goes a long way.
I just saw Towelhead the other day (unfortunately for me), and have to wonder if part of the problem isn't the moral relativism that these people inject into the movies. This movie starred a lovely actress in a very heavy role (coming of age in a broken family with different ethnic heritages). Unfortunately, instead of learning something and growing as a person, her "discovery" was that at 13, she liked sex and wanted to keep having as much of it as possible. That's it. No other resolution.
I can just imagine some Libtards sitting around a table talking about how it "empowers" women to have them realize that having sex isn't a bad thing, so therefore the movie is really important. As a viewer, I was shocked to see the credits come up with literally nothing changing in this girls life (including her). It made a mediocre movie (that should have been really good) into a very bad one.
Great article! I'm with Carolyn – my list of actors/actresses no longer worth watching, thanks to their hate-filled diatribes against people like myself, is epic. Call it censorship, call it whatever you want, but I have the right to just say no to people who have no respect for my way of life, and I certainly don't have to waste my money watching them! Get a clue, Hollywood women! You're so far out of touch with real Americans, your spoiled, elitists butts are showing.
Aren't some of these actresses well-conneted / wealthy / talented enough to purchase the rights to a story, produce, direct and star in their own film? If so, they have no business complaining about the lack of choice roles. Go out and create, don't sit around whining.

I hear you. The O has people he calls friends who put all of the worlds ailments on the Jew-rules-everything bit. From Farrakhan to Wright, from Jackson to Sharpton, the list of these race hustlers who blame outside influence from unseen forces such as "Jew-di" mind trickery and other such things. The Jews are a proud people and and worthy of alot of respect for keeping the faith after the hardships they have been put through.
Well said John!!!
John:
Are you saying that if Michael Cera, Shia LaBeouf, and Chris Pine ran into John Wayne, Lee Marvin, and Tom Selleck in a dark alley, it wouldn't be a fair fight?
Amen to that brother! It is hard to really get excited about any cinematic undertaking when you have no confidence in a movie star delivering a realistic performance. With the older stars, you could actually imagine they were in the military or worked at NASA or were cowboys in the wild west. These new guys…..well…I suppose some movies should remind us how sad and pathetic our lives really are
I worked in Hollywood for a little while and the female executives are way worse (IMHO) when it comes to throwing other women under the bus. I think there has developed an erroneous assumption that they're being "tough" and "strong" by not allowing themselves any sympathy toward other women. So they don't really give a damn when women are objectified in entertainment and convince themselves it's all part of the bottom line. I think they're really ignorant of the long term consequences and how much society has been harmed by reality-tv culture and the mainstreaming of pornographic content. I think women are bearing the brunt of it– though too many young men today don't seem to be faring any better. It's getting harder and harder to find real men out there. Good thing I'm not a liberal, or I wouldn't know a real man if I saw one.
Is Mel Gibson a liberal ? He is my fav. actor an i would hate to not see anything he does anymore, does anyone know ?
Very good points, Mr. Nolte.
. . . You're kidding, right?
Great column John, and the juxtaposition of the photos between the great Bette Davis, and Joan Crawford surrounding Natalie Portman, speaks volumes. There just ain't any visible classy brassy dames in the motion picture industry that I see. Sandra Bullock may be an exception.
The only consistancey in liberal-think appears to be contradiction.
Nice one, John, but why'd you list Mae West twice?
Wow Sarannnnnndon, no actress there, opps, actor. Carrots top now that's funny!
R. Lee Ermey lusty?
LOL!
Seriously, the past forty years have been a downward spiral as far as virtues and morals are concerned. I remember seeing an interview with Andy McDowell where she addressed the absence of respectable roles that women once had and stated that she would never disrobe… then she did Sex, Lies, Videotape… er, I don't think she got it/ gets it.
You can sum the whole problem up in a word … ”class.”
Yes, that just about sums it up. I would not pay a dime to see any of those old broads who are complaining, like Sarandon, hasn't she had a run that is spectacular for someone with her marginal good looks and talent? Meryl Streep? All of them are just so over-rated.
The new ones? If Natalie Portman is an A-list actress then I'm Barbarella. These girls are just pathetic. Scarlett Johanssen? You gotta be kidding me.
No class is one thing, but Jayne Mansfield had no class (her character anyway) but she had astounding good looks and talent. These actresses today have none of the above.

Ditto.
I love Bette Davis, never a beauty, but, she had class in spades. OK, a little on the histrionic side, but, you have to love her.
No, I don't think so. The Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto both feature strong male and female roles. He might be a greenie, but I don't think that necessarily makes him a liberal.
Guess when the subject is Mae West, John always thinks in multiples of two.
Why is the actress dying? The roles are one and are a symptomatic example of what's wrong with Hollywood. Everything is the same, if you watch one "meaty" role you've seen them all. Playing gay, doing the ugly schtick with the makeup, or going full-retard, nudity, salacious sex for publicity and shock value (or plain marketing, like Vanessa Hudgens or Paris Hilton) – just think of The Reader. Male roles are just as narrow, but not as bad – yet. It's quickly getting that way. This is a town where Jake, Leo and George are considered box office red meat, but apparently no one is reading the receipts..
These problems began 30 years ago when films and studios were infiltrated by the intelligentsia and purged of the golden agers who knew how to spin a yarn and relate to the people in the seats. There has always been an elitist tinge to Hollywood, but now making it is impossible unless your related to someone, connected politically, part of the upper crust class or sleeping your way to the top. What this means, less people who can relate to the audience, less people to write stories for the audience. This is why studios mine comic books, 80s properties and video games for audiences, because they can no longer create for them. Even when they try to, it's shot down, and justifiably so, because these people have built no trust with middle America.
The only way to save Hollywood is to kill it. Guerilla film making, in the basement or the garage, with the Mac fired up. Online distribution and maybe, just maybe, some people on the side still favoring humanistic stories will start putting some money up instead of wallowing in their only daily blog blatherings. If you want to change, make it, don't talk it.
I can't get over that first photograph of Sarandon and Chavez "in cahoots". Ya just might as well plant a big red nose on that Sarandon woman- She's turned herself into niothing but a clown. Ebert says "Thumbs Up" cause he's just as red as she is!
Good article John but I disagree with one point and that is the role of Feminism. It is the modern conception of Feminism that is the root cause of the bad roles for women. Modern Feminism has done more to destroy women and thier rightful place as equals than any so called bigot could have done. How is a girl growing up today supposed to make sense of what to do?
I had a liberal friend send me the first season of 30 Rock. The best thing about it is Alec Baldwin. He plays a right-winger/corporate boss and is really the most human and sympathectic character on the show. The libs are all farely flakey.
I thought the same thing! I guess all that botox and plastic surgery have turned them into twins!
Along with "arty" and "edgy" – if any movie is described as being "an irreverent look at . . . .", I know that's not the movie to avoid. We could use a little more reverence and respect in this world, not less.
Well argued, but I'd be curious to hear how you square your theory with the fact that one of the (if not THE, period) most powerful media franchises aimed at (adult) women on the PLANET is "Sex & The City?"
Also… are you really sure that Marilyn Monroe belongs on a list of women who had it "good" under the studio system?
Good point. I defy anyone to look at the names above in red of classic female stars (Bette Davis…) and try to make a serious claim that the so-called "feminist movement" was necessary for these women to be social equals or taken seriously in society. Can't be done.
FYI: Katharine Hepburn hated having her name misspelled. At one point when a very young producer tried to convince her to keep a misspelled billing card in an already completed credit sequence, she sent him a withering look and asked if he was joking or just inept, or some such words.

You have my empathy.
You make a very good point, because as I was reading your post, I was thinking that some of the better films of the past 30 odd years about Americans, & Americana were made by directors that are from another country.

Thank you Sir for clearing that up!
It's been several months and we are now proud owners of a bouncing baby German Shepherd puppy named Wolfgang. 8 months old, 90+ lbs. and currently in the dog house for chewing up my wife's glasses.
But we're still happy!
I only caught it by accident and, I hate to say it, but the show if funny and he's very good in it. Just remember, they're not real people…they're actors.
Shia LaBeouf sounds like something I'd have to send back at a French restaurant.
Marie Dressler was a top box office draw for years. Have you SEEN Marie Dressler? Why was she so beloved? Because she was a real person playing well-written roles.
The Jewish moguls in Hollywood used to make movies for the whole family. Even "adult" movies like Maltese Falcon were something you could still bring your kids to.

This just in, Susan Sarandon has agreed to portray Hugo Chavez's thumb in the upcoming Will Farrell comedy, "Sit on It."
Are you daring to suggest that Leonardo wasn't believable as Howard Hughes? But he is so pretty!
I was walking down the street in Chelsea once, talking on the phone with a friend and I saw this middle-aged redhead in front of her apartment building having a cigarette, I knew it was Suze Sarandon. As I got closer I saw her do the "I'm about to be recognized by civillian" prep. I just kept chatting with my buddy and just as I passed her I looked over my shoulder, cellphone still to my ear, and gave a manly wink. Then just went on chatting. I think it turned the old broad on.
Haven't watched anything out of Hollyweird in YEARS and I feel better for it.

The Anti Liberal Zone
So much for Hollywood having the best moral compass.
Actually, this year the film that is getting the most Oscar buzz is Precious, which doesn't have a single male actor in a major role. So what are they whining about?
Great story and great moniker, PSG!
Right, L.B. May I mention my favorite supporting character actress? The wonderfully world-weary, cynical best pal, Eve Arden.
I'm glad I'm in the south, lots of actual men around here.
Honestly, I don't think they have the smarts for it. Also, they are probably too terrified of failure and the dreaded possibility of having to get a man to assist them in operating such an enterprise.
Puts me in mind of Mary Pickford who, in 1919, was the most famous woman in the world. Pulling herself along by her own size two bootstraps, "America's Sweetheart became the first female millionaire in the country, most popular actress, and a founding member of United Artists where she took an active, hands on participation in the corporation. You won't find at this time any instance of her pouting and feeling sorry for herself.
These are all great articles and factual. The thing is why give the leftist malcontents this much attention? They do what the do and have been. We are not going to change them in anyways shape of form. We as a nation of conservatives MUST ignore these maniacs. Stop going to see their movies, who cares if they turn all these movie sluts into high paid whores that project their hatred to America, capitalism, God, Mom and apple-pie. We spend too much time giving them attention which in turn makes them more illegitimate. Lets turn this around and STOP GOING TO FILMS. Shut off the Networks shows. We are doing this with CNN, MSNBC all these leftist shows of BS. Lets do this with film. People have to make films like they use to. The market is there, we need to bring back those images of real women and real man. We can do this because we are AMERICANS we can do anything we damn well please. If you don't believe this then you fall into the pit of the liberal hell where nothing will happen because peer pressure tells you that YOU can't do it. Today you have digital equipment, you have YOU TUBE, EYEBLAST TV, POPMODAL shoot film, attack the left and their images. Post these clip out there not one here and one there, I am talking hundreds and hundreds. DO SOMETHING and make change, the time of talking, pissing and moaning is over. Get out there and change this damn leftist sick pop culture take it away from them the way they took it from us. There are Bette Davis's out there, we have to find them and make them what they can be. We go against the status quo and raise hell or NOTHING WILL CHANGE
How do you let go of something you love? I've been a movie buff for years, and still look forward to new releases that show promise, but yeah-sadly, the thrill, if not gone, ain't what it used to be.
I guess I mourn the past greatness of cinema because there doesn't seem to be anything/anyone coming down the road to bring it back, or to even usher in a new version. In various comments boards on BH there have been those who have called for an alternative Hollywood, bankrolled by those sick of the current version. If anyone's building, I'm in.
Prostitution has always been wildly lucrative…for the pimps. So, when the current SITC cast gets a little "saggy," their pimps (liberal Hollywood) will toss them out in favor of a more lucrative teenybopper cast. It happens ALL the time in Tinseltown: Lindsey Lohan, Sharon Stone, Halle Berry, etc.
SITC doesn't sound like real empowerment to me. In fact, it further vindicates Nolte's point that Hollywood is more oppressive for actresses.
Exactly! I've been saying this for years. Every time I hear someone say "There aren't any good roles for women/blacks/minorities/etc.," I think, "Why don't you write one?" Or buy one from the thousands of writers who are trying to sell their work. It's the whining of a privileged class.
Ditto!
A shallow pool, of shallow women, in a shallow town.
How appropriate.
Oh, man, I LOVE Eve Arden. She was THE center of attention for me in 'Mildred Pierce'.
EntI don't agree. While I am very conservative, the changes (most female-oriented films don't make money and in fact lose them absent "chick flicks") in society are more important in describing lack of decent female roles than the disintegration of the Studio system and hard-left takeover in the "star/agent" system of today.
The female-oriented films that make money are generally "cheap" to make and market "chick flicks" about relationships and hunky guys and princess fantasies, and they do well (make money) despite having fairly limited actresses and bad scripts (Katherine Heigl, Sandra Bullock, Jlo for the former, "27 Dresses" and "All About Steve" for the latter).
This is because the female audience is NOT INTERESTED in "quality" female drama any more than the male audience is interested in anything but action/adventures and comedies, often of middling quality (the Transporter series comes to mind, as do most Apatow comedies).
Look at "Twilight." The New Moon fangirls are lined up around the block to see that like Star Wars geeks. Even if the actors are generally not very good, the script and book awful, and the premise stupid (a couple of supernatural beings fight over a 16 year old girl).
In the 1940's and 1950's, adult Westerns and Dramas had mature, intelligent themes and scripts while serving out plenty of action and excitement for men. Today we have shaky-cam and predictable bad guys. In the same way we had "women's pictures" that featured plenty of relationships and desirable men, but still spoke intelligently about the human condition. There just is not much of an audience for "Oscar" films that aim to be both good and entertaining, and critically film-makers cannot be both "entertaining" and "good" either.er text right here!
Let me add, what would it take for intelligent, decent roles for women to be common?
1. The films would have to consistently make money.
2. The films would have to have a group of writers, producers, and actresses who can create them.
Right now, the model for #1 seems to be either el-cheapo "Chick Flick comedies" that don't have much action or effects and are "cheap" or appeal to hard-core fangirls of hunky-guy princess fantasies like Twilight/New Moon. That's it.
Critically, the ability to have "cross-over" audiences with significant amounts of men willing to plunk down $11 (or the equivalent for a DVD purchase/rental) is about zero. Things like Twilight are absolutely repellent to men, hardly any man will see it willingly. The same holds true for the cheap chick-flick comedies.
Sadly, "Enchanted" which was fun, witty, and accessible to both men and women, families and children and adults, is not much of a model. There has been little attempt to make a sweet-hearted film that makes both sexes get a smile on their face. Instead we have "ghetto-ization" of films, with stuff like Iron Man (a good film) making money because women/girls won't object to being dragged off to see it, while Twilight/New Moon relies entirely on the female audience. Putting a cap on the returns.
I think the current crop of actresses compares favorably to that of the golden era: Zoey Deschanel, her sister Emily, Mila Kunis, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Famke Jannsen, and even Katie Holmes (see Pieces of April, a great performance) are up to the task. The WRITERS and producers, however, are not up to it.
The WRITERS?!!!
You must be joking. You cannot sell an original idea in Hollywood today. How many movies recently are remakes or retreads of older films? How many times do I have to hear "They are remaking Y film…" instead of going with an original script, unless it had a previous life as a bestselling novel or comic book.
Blame the writers? Please.
Please! That's "act-person"!
Eve Arden! I am of the generation where she is forever typecast as Our Miss Brooks, but she was wonderful.
Hey, folks? How about Lucille Ball in those roles as the hard-bitten secretary to the detectives in some of those old film-noir type flicks?
p { margin: 0; }
For me, too, Carolyn. She plays off the tragic Joan Crawford so well and keeps the movie from becoming too melodramatic. Everybody needs a chum like Eve Arden.
p { margin: 0; }
Three cheers for the hard-bitten dames!
I think it's a little unfair to compare those kids to the greats mentioned above. Now those three vs Leo, Matt, and Brad? I think Mr. Wayne could take care of all three by himself.
I don't know, I really love Will Smith, Morgan Freeman, and now that Robert Downey Jr. is clean he is doing some good work as well. I also have never heard Will Smith say anything particulary negative about conservatives (or Morgan Freeman either) but I don't pay a whole lot of attention to what actors say about politics anyway.
Shia was great on the Disney channel show Even Stevens. I was in college and watched that show. It is still hilarious. Unfotunately that is the last good thing I have seen him in.
I don't know, but I don't have as much respect for him now because of his recent divorce and subsequent announcement that his girlfriend is pregnant and that had nothing to do with his separation from his wife. Well the fact that he was sleeping with another woman might have something to do with it.
Tina Fey is an even bigger reason not to watch "30 Rock". Not saying she or Baldwin can't be funny, but their political-bashing just overshadows everything else they do
According to imdb, Mel is starring in a movie next year directed by Jodie Foster called "The Beaver" (no jokes, please). That seems to be his only upcoming picture, however.
Mary Wickes was one of my favorite of the old "character actresses". And she kept working for decades, right up until her death, despite not being conventionally attractive.
Actually I would argue that part of the reason Twilight is so popular is that it actually espouses some morals and leaves things in the romance/relationship to the imagination. I have seen both movies and read all the books. I like them but don't in anyway consider them great literature or award quality movies (although the 2nd is better). I do love the fact though that the author left things to the imagination and actually addresses the topic of right and wrong.
Hollywood should look into the deeper reasons why the stories are so attractive to so many young girls. Sure the stories are romantic and fantastical, the movies star good looking boys (depending on your taste of course) but I think there is more to the appeal as I previously mentioned. I don't think Hollywood will get it though.
What?! Do you not know anything about how films are made? Just because you purchase writes to a book, somehow write the scipt, even though you're an actress and not a writer, invest everything you've made into making it— doesn't mean the film gets distributed. It doesn't mean anyone sees it. Wake up.
