Word! If mocking one religious icon is fair game, they all are. Part of the reason it's funny is because it's taboo, and you know it'll piss some people off. I haven't seen this episode, so I'm not going to cast judgment on it. However, I can say that when Larry makes fun of Muslims, its played out like he's the jerk. When he makes fun of Christians, it's because the Christians are jerks, or total morons who would see urine on a painting of Jesus and think it was crying. So this whole excuse about "he offends everyone" is a cop-out.

I haven't seen this show, but its true that Christians are attacked by Hollywood a great deal– I do believe it is because our moral stance, especially as it regards sexuality, is the polar opposite to theirs. But the Bible does say to rejoice when persecuted — and persecuation is not just being eaten by a lion.

I do wish some wealthy Christians would back Christian artists or open a film studio or TV network,–we need more films as powerful as 'The Passion of the Christ ' being made — we need to get our message out using the same mediums–film and television– we need to fight fire with fire. The numbers of people that showed up to see 'The Passion shows that there is a huge audience–huge HUNGER for this. And lets not watch the secular toilet shows in the first place–its not helping us any to do so–it erodes our sensitivity to what is vulgar frankly.

The impression I got from reading another post on this site, and now Nolte's, is that David's character actually decided (for his own amusement, presumably) to find a picture of Jesus, put it in the appropriate place, and then piss on it. Then I saw the episode, and it was quite a different story – he pisses where he's supposed to and a single drop splashes onto the picture hanging on the wall, which isn't even that close to the toilet.

The actually much more offensive part of the episode is that the homeowners are dumb enough to mistake that for a miracle, etc. yet few seem to even comment on that.

Not that it would be word commenting on, because this show has made fun of everyone for years, most particularly Jews. I suppose it's softer on Muslims, but that's a different story.

One of the reasons this kind of thing is so common is that there's very little actual pushback. From what I've seen this is mainly because there's so many Christians such as yourself, willing to either over look it or who want to play "turn the other cheek" martyr. I think such folks are wrong.

If you think Christianity is a positive force in your life, then it's your responsibility, as denoted in the bible, to spread the "good word" to people who could also benefit from it. That is something made infinitely more difficult when the religion is being constantly attacked and singled from every possible media angle. Every day I run into people whose misery in life would be vastly improved by the adoption of the Christian (or Jewish) faith. But they have been inoculated against faith by ubiquitous media slams and slanders.

Consequently, such attacks are not harmless. If you actually take a few moments to think about their effects, they're not funny or enjoyable at all.

While I disagree with you views of Christian persecution in America, I wholeheartedly stand by the idea that people should stop standing on the proverbial sidelines and get in the game. The more viewpoints in the marketplace the better, I say.
But people are going to have to put in the work. Complaining on websites and threatening to not watch shows you already don't watch will do nothing.

I'm trying to find this podcast, but according to the Malzberg podcast fee, he had a guest host on today. Do you remember exactly when you heard this discussion? Was it on Malzberg's radio show, or was he speaking on someone else's show?

That reminds me of Burt Prelutsky's story. As a former liberal, he says liberals really don't like anybody, and the only thing that keeps them together is similar politics. If memory serves, he said that just crediting GWB, got him playing the role as a perpetual butt of jokes. I´m not so sure. They hate Christians (and faithful Jews, even if they´re not as vocal about it) because our society and civilization has Judeo-Christian foundations. Liberals hate society. Faith is seen (correctly) as putting unacceptable restrictions of their selfish behavior and standing in the way of realizing their utopian vision. Also, faith is demanding and deep inside it shames them.

This is of course hypothetical, but why wouldn´t faithful, peaceful muslims draw the hate of liberals? They are just not on their radar now. If our society was ordered according to muslim principles – which are just as as restricting and demanding – wouldn´t that faith also stand in their way, shame them? The reason that I ask is because in the picture he is clearly looking at the picture with the drop of urine on it. A small, very general history discussion:

The Dark Ages were a period of time following the devastation of Europe by the Black Death, among other things, when many people turned away from belief. It was a time of agnoticism and paganism–kind of like we what we have now.

I would just like to point out that it was the period of Christian awakening that dragged most of the Western world out of the dark ages and into one of the most prolific periods of art and invention in human history–namely "The Renaissance." This period gave us Leonardo da Vinci, Michealangelo, Dante, and many of the classic masters that artists and great thinkers around the world still study.

What were many of these artists and philosophers and great thinkers studying and reflecting on: The nature of God and Christ. Please see The Sistine Chapel and Dante's Inferno as references.

Further down the historical path there was a 17th Century Great Plague which killed millions around the world. And again, during the Great Plague many people pulled away from belief as a result of the devastation–who can blame them?

The Great Plague was followed by a period known as the "Age of Enlightenment" where the survivors once again began reflecting on the Nature of God and began a period of rejoicing God. It was during this period that the great writers and thinkers of the day began examining Freedom and Liberty and it was also during this period that our country was founded. The United States was founded during a time of Christian Revival.

My point? Larry David and people who think like him live in a Dark Ages or Great Plague mentality. Let them. Those of us who know better will help raise up humankind. There is a pattern throughout history that establishes this to be true.

I've had praying make a big difference in my life many times. Trouble is Human, you can't use prayer in just emergency situations as a last resort and have that mentality. I watched the episode On Demand last night and I have to say that the entire episode was pretty bad. Curb is never really all that funny, anyway, unless you enjoy watching an elderly man make a fool of himself during every waking moment if his life.

There are so many interpretations and revisions to the "Dark" ages that in many cases the Dark Ages and Middle Ages have become interchangeable. It was a period, no doubt, fraught with devastation. I don't deny that the Church was influential during this period. It was. All you have to do is study the history of the Monarchy and the Vatican and see the influence of the day. One could argue that the Church was influential through its oppression.

But I am talking about the people and the popular culture–which can be seen in the art of the two periods.

Middle Ages art was in many ways very violent especially during the Black Death Period. Of course it would be. People were dying. Also, you will see an increase in Paganism during this period which some scholars see as a response to the devastation of the period. That makes sense to me. God let them down and so forth so they pulled away from belief.

Now contrast that with what happened during the Renaissance period. The people who made it out of the death of the Plague began to rejoice–they made it through. The popular culture turned toward a more positive view of the Creator. Renaissance, of course, meaning "Re-Birth." Many people began to see God as not a great Punisher but a great Creator. There are reasons that this period is called a Renaissance.

Similarily the Church went through massive upheavals around the time of the Great Plague (1600s). Also around this time Paganism had a rebirth of it's own. Here's a link that addresses this to some extent:

Good points on the Age of Enlightenment, but one could argue that in many ways religion had another re-birth in the form of Rational Christianity. In fact, I think you will find that there was a revival of spiritual Christianity especially in the United States. It could be argued that it happened in Europe as well.

Like the previous Renaissance period the people began to once again view God in a positive light. God was viewed again as a God of nature and creation. Another by product of this thought can be found several decades later in the Romantic Poets.

I wasn't mocking anyone. I was merely asserting that the greatest agnostic/pagan/atheist periods of humanity came about during devastating periods in human history. That kind of thinking does represent a Dark Ages or Great Plague mentality. Spiritual revival is a by product of having survived these periods.

After the devastation of the 20th century by way of wars and violent dictatorships it doesn't surprise me that non-belief is growing of which Larry David and Bill Maher are good examples. But it is just a matter of time when another Great Awakening is on the horizon. History shows this.

You are 100% correct – the Jews who support the Democrats have placed politics over religion. However, virtually every orthodox Jew I know (and I know plenty) support conservatives, heck they are conservatives – they understand full well what OBAMA and the Democrats are all about. The one great thing about reform and conservative Jews is that they don't have children. One ofr two generations more and they will be gone entirely. I see it happening in my area where reform and conservative temples are empty and closing. It was a failed experiment that caused the world alot of misery – look at Marx, Engles (was he Jewish?) and most of Hollywood – or go back to the older generations of the NY Times – Sulzberger. (Now that's a generation that should have avoided children!).

MB: You have your history wrong – I'm a movie buff – he Hayes code was something Hollywood asked for. It was costing the film industry too much money to cut films for different markets – for example, you wouldn't show the same cut of a film in Kansas that you would in New York. So the studios put together the Hayes Commission to come up with a set of standards for ALL states, since it was costing the studios in excess of $2 million a year to edit the films for all markets. So, this was a cost saving measure that was wanted by the industry itself to come up with a uniform standard. The media has exaggerated the government end of this as it always does. It had nothing to do with censorship and everything to do with money.

I've watched the show on occasion and it has some pretty funny moments. I do however believe that David knew this would stir it up among christians (and felt pretty safe about the lack of a response from the community) but I think he miscalculated about the muslim response (via CAIR). I really would like to see CAIR stir this up a bit more and perhaps get some comment from the mullahs (seeking an apology). Then I think that Larry and his pals might be getting a little more nervous and certainly more circumspect about what the write.

So to be clear….. The muslims are barbaric because they riot in response to a comic, execute homosexuals, etc. Christians are so much better than that, buuuuuut it would be just great to go back to the old days when we would slaughter someone over a TV show. (I don't make apologies for muslims, there are a ton of insane ones out there. However, I find your stance wildly inconsistent.)

Believe it or not, there are several million people who are so reflective and committed to a higher reality as to find a show that promotes athesism, befoulment of Christ Jesus, and late middle-aged references to erectile dysfunction not very entertaining. I don't mind anyone being proud of their faith or saying publicly that it is what guides their decisions. What I don't like is having myself being lumped in with them. I understand that this is something the left does to marginalize ALL of us. There is diversity amongst conservatives but an article like this suggests we are all the religious, anti-gay, anti-abortion stereotypes the left makes us out to be. And I can't talk about being a Republican these days without some liberal automatically blaming me for wanting to force religion, anti-gay and anti-woman bigotry down their throats. My concerns are that our government is big and oppressive. And that's IT. That's really the extent of my political concerns.

Anyway, I personally see a weird inconguencies with being a Christian and a Republican.
