Gore Vidal Describes Polanski’s Victim as ‘Young Hooker’

In an interview published today, The Atlantic describes Gore Vidal as “a sharp provocateur, as irascible and irreverent as ever.”
I’m assuming that’s some kind of internal Atlantic-code for ”twisted old has-been degenerate desperate for attention“:
ATLANTIC: In September, director Roman Polanski was arrested in Switzerland for leaving the U.S. in 1978 before being sentenced to prison for raping a 13-year-old girl at Jack Nicholson’s house in Hollywood. During the time of the original incident, you were working in the industry, and you and Polanski had a common friend in theater critic and producer Kenneth Tynan. So what’s your take on Polanski, this many years later?
VIDAL: I really don’t give a fuck. Look, am I going to sit and weep every time a young hooker feels as though she’s been taken advantage of?
Vidal then goes on to blame Polanski’s legal problems on…
“an anti-Semitic and anti-fag thing … The idea that this girl was in her communion dress, a little angel all in white, being raped by this awful Jew, Polacko…”
Oh, it’s because Polanski’s Jewish… Now it all makes sense. We should’ve been looking at his being a Jew not his confession or his drugging and sodomizing a 13 year-old girl who obviously had it coming because she wasn’t wearing a communion dress.
Naturally Vidal will face no real outrage or consequence for describing a 13 year-old rape victim as a “hooker.”

Quoting Vidal on matters of sexual morality is like quoting Bernie Madoff on fiduciary responsibility, but he makes some good points otherwise, even though not without some disingenuous qualifiers, e.g. : "I was delighted when Obama appeared on the scene. But now it seems as though our original objection to him – that experience mattered – was well-founded." And he nicely dismisses the Democrats' present electoral mandate, saying " …they don’t have a reason."
He's not just another typical liberal. Most liberals don't want to rape underage girls.

Sorry guys. I was in a flaming frame of mind after I read the Vidal interview. I located Paglia at the Atlantic for some reason. While I don't care for her style of writing, she seems a decent sort and I shouldn't associate her with Vidal's loathsome comments. One hopes that even Sullivan wouldn't tolerate such utterances.
Having cooled down, I still say that the interviewer and his editors should be called to account. Vidal shouldn't be tolerated in any case: he is a preachy bore…not the least bit witty or informative. No-one that nasty can afford to be that dull.

Just dwell on the horror of what he just said – 13 year old 'hooker'. Now, I know it's a lie – the girl wasn't – but that's not the point. The point here is that Vidal sneers at a 13 year old being a hooker. Consider what kind of existence it is that he's describing – a 13 year old strips herself naked to have sex with a stranger, gets down on her knees to blow the stranger, bends over and lets him shove in her anus, maybe even has her face punched, her stomach kicked, etc. And when this hell is over, the most that kid gets is $40 or $50 tossed in her face and then, while she's still stinking from what she's just gone through, another stranger comes up to her, unzips his pants and the hell begins all over again for this kid. And yet Vidal is so bored, so unconcerned about this hell that he gives it nothing but a single sentence – and the bulk of the sentence is him sneering and taunting the 13 year old that hell can freeze over before he 'weeps' for her. While I certainly disagree with Paglia frequently, I think she is very much the decent sort. Although she is definitely not a conservative, she treats conservatives with respect. Heck, she likes Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh. I look forward to reading her column every few weeks and am glad she is friends with Matt Drudge so that he links it frequently.
