Never saw them again.
The curious thing to me is that while about half of the paid staff are for Obama, which is not surprising for young social service grads, the volunteers are almost unanimously conservatives of the bitter clinger variety.
None of whom needed a presidential push to get them to volunteer.

Then there is the whole problem with using public entities to push a political agenda, as if that is truly constitiutional. And Yes, I have read the Communist Manifesto, Mein Kampf, various articles by Mussolini, and a lot of what our government is doing is lock step with their philosophy; being called to serve for "the public good". Eventually it was no longer a call, it was a threat.

I am not ready for Obama to shove down my throat the "art of service" and who Obama thinks I should provide a service to. As a responsible and self reliant member of society I already choose who to help, and yes, I am sure I have helped some liberals along the way. I already donate money to the Red Cross and my free time to the university I graduated from. When there is a disaster I already go out and help those that need it.

This is turning out to be way too much Obama and way too much government interference in my life for me to handle. I look forward to finding out what channels these "service announcements" will happen so I can spend time doing something else.

Many Middle and High Schools require a certain number of volunteer hours in order to graduate. These organizations are chosen by the school boards; you cannot volunteer through your church or choose your own cause. This campaign of 'promoting service' is only to promote left-wing causes. So, if we do decide to take them up on their urging, donate or volunteer for Conservative and/or neutral causes like visiting that Cat lady down the street and maybe fixing her squeaky door. Volunteering is wonderful. It's VERY American. Americans have ALWAYS been the first ones in line to help out those in need all over the world, and have rarely been as much as thanked for it. But there's a place to go to look for volunteering opportunities. It's called your local church. Go there and volunteer. the issue is that this is an underhanded and devious way of promoting service through weaving messages into these storylines. They think we're sheep and will be swayed because our TV heroes tell us that we should do such and such. What will they be telling us next? Should we be volunteering to go to work without being paid, and that Obama will take care of our needs? Will our kids come home from school with a story that they're getting pressured to volunteer from their teachers and that we have to find time to help them out with this? Or that we're a "bad family" because we're working for our money instead of volunteering to help others while depending on the government? It's a slippery slope when this kind of thing gets started. How about if this catches on? Soon we have entire shows centered around how wonderful the government is — the heroes are community organizers who have to fight off the evil capitalists, or that spout off the pleasures of working your entire life for the advancement of the Federal Government. Sounds like the USSR in the 80s. I've been feeling that all these little nips and nudges are trying to see how much the American public will take. Hey, let's have a nice touchy-feely message to the kids in America to explain how important going to school and doing your part is. Cool. Everyone OK with that? Wonderful. It worked out so well, let's do it again! How about once a month? That OK? Heck, this President has a real rapport going with the youth of the country. Maybe a weekly address is in order! Am I the only person who is seriously bothered by how poorly written the EIF memo is? If promoting the government's vision of service is important enough to highjack the network shows for a week, isn't it important enough to hire a decent writer to write the memo? This may seem like a small point, but I find it very insulting that the people who want to tell me how to spend my free time can't even figure out how to write a memo.

I think service and volunteerism are great, but I'm uncomfortable when the government goes to such efforts to coerce and manipulate the citizens into providing community service. It may sound like a good idea for the government to promote volunteerism, but they shouldn't be going to such lengths to control the message and to channel people into their targeted service areas. It's just creepy.

I don't need "feely good" TV program to tell me or my children to Volunteer…I'm already too busy doing it on my own. I donate platelets, 20 hrs a month at the USO, work full-time. I have a son who joined our "all volunteer" armed forces, another son in law enforcement, and a daughter that helps the under privileged, they were raised with the "do for other" mentality…so we don't need someone prodding us on "how to be a better citizen".

So, why would I want to try be indocrinated by all of those T.V. shows to what they think I should believe about about each of these areas? I think we should defund the Department of Education and let the local government be concerned about the needs of their education, not a "one size fits all" beaurocrat. I believe we should let health coverage be an a la carte plan like auto insurance, allow citizens to purchase a plan from anywhere in the country, and have employers give tax credits so people can buy their own private plan and not rely on their employer. I think we have made great strides in environmental conservation, our water is cleaner, our air is cleaner, and we have plenty of wilderness to cherish.

No problem, you will never hear and learn unless you have true dialogue. But to answer your point, volunteering is good, more people should do it so we could rely less on government. My wife and I volunteer with inner-city children, teaching them to read, do math, and play music. But I am not going to shame my neighbor because he wont or cant, it is not my place. I would rather persuade by example instead of trying to indoctrinate them into serving for "the greater good". We all have different views of what that good is, everyone should be left to decide for themselves not the EIF. Some people don't have time to volunteer, but they can donate to a charity and do just as much good as spending time in the community. If we keep getting taxed out the @$$ by our dear leaders charities will suffer, and the people who really need help will loose out.

Volunteering is good, my wife and I like to volunteer with inner-city children. Teaching them how to read, do math, play music, it is very rewarding. The problem I have is making it political, and saying it's our "patriotic duty" to volunteer. No one is forcing or shaming my wife and I to volunteer, and no one should be strong-armed into it if they don't want to. My fear is that the government will start requiring it from our children, from our citizens to do volunteer work they want done; sounds an awful lot like the Nazis if you ask me.

My hometown paper in print and online in our very red county is extremely blue in opinion. The guest columnists are from the local private liberal arts college, many of whom whorship Castro and Chavez as heroic figures. I quit watching the networks at the end of last year. If you are sick of where we are going go to World Net Daily. They have a petition you can sign to impeach the president. It is about time.

I think this is a great idea. This isn't about the government overstepping their boundaries, it's about creating a community again. Art helps elevate education and general quality of life. Just because art is sponsored by the government doesn't mean it will necessarily reflect the government's values, or whichever way they may choose to lean. And anyway, there are huge shifts that must take place now, especially in environmental affairs, such as switching to renewable resources for energy. These shifts have to happen in order for an economy like ours to continue to function, and are going to require an enormous amount of manpower. Not to mention the fact that the last eras in which the government implemented service programs, such as during and after world war II, are continually harkened to as days when an honorable generation dedicated themselves to the betterment of the collective nation and the world. If there are service options you don't like, try finding one you do, or like some other people have said just spend time with your family and help someone out just because it's a nice thing to do. We don't all have to agree on what the government's viewpoints have to be, but generally I think promoting service and volunteering in is not a bad thing.

It is ironic that TV is being used to promote volunteer work. Volunteers spend about 15 hours per week watching television, while people who don’t volunteer watch an average of 23 hours. The average volunteer gives one hour per week. People who choose not to give one hour a week to volunteer usually spend at least eight hours more a week watching television. It's too bad that the volunteers will miss a lot of TV programing espousing what they are out doing.

We don't need Obama and government to lead us or coerce us to volunteer or give to charity. And several of the posters here really have no idea what they're talking about. Over the last years 26.4% of Americans donated an average of 52 hours of their time per year. This has always been a country of people ready to lend a hand or give to charity. We, as a country, are by far the most generous people on earth. That is if private contributions are included. Privately Americans gave an average of $1,000 per person, much higher than any other people throughout the world. Combining government aid with private charity , we give more than double what the next most generous country does.

As for the misinformed suggesting that Republicans and/or conservatives are less charitable than their counterparts, I suggest you do a little research. If you overlay a map of the US showing Red states/Blue states with that of a map showing the most charitable states, you will see that they are practically identical. The top ten states were all Red states. Seven of the ten least generous states were Blue states.

I've volunteered for various things my entire adult life! I was "green" way back in the 70's when it really meant something! Now with this canned, contrived garbage being pushed down the collective American throats, the words "volunteer", "service", and "green" make me want to vomit when I hear them coming out of the mouths of these self-promoting, narcissistic leaches. I'll volunteer to help dismantle their entire kingdom of smoke and mirrors. Sign me up!

The more I read and hear, the more worried I become. This latest takeover of our TV (what's going on with that?) to promote organized volunteering, especially when it is into programs-not-chosen-by-me is just the next HUH? moment. There is a big, big difference between volunteering by choice, and forced to volunteer. This is just creepy. Creepy like in 1984. Creepy like in "We the Living' creepy. We have had presidents promoting volunteering, even the Bush 1000 points of light were FOR THE COUNTRY, not part of an agenda, and certainly not to promote the president!
