Russell Simmons: God Will Destroy Us If We Don’t Follow Barack
by John NolteOver at HuffPo, Russell Simmons has let go of the wheel and bounced off a guard rail. His apocalyptic melodrama sounds like the typical Hollywood cliche of a Christian right-winger. But these lefties are all about projection, so that’s to be expected.
A normal celebucrat post has a pull quote or two you can highlight and make sport of, but Simmons is all pull quote — a bonanza of crazy — so where to begin? Hey, I know, let’s play a game. Here are ten quotes, nine are from Simmons, one is not. Can you pick out the lunacy that doesn’t belong?
1. The president’s honest attempt to promote world peace through the same methods taught by Jesus Christ are met with contempt by a country whose collective consciousness is extraordinarily fearful and at times, sacrilegious.

They killed many of the great dreamers. With all of the fearful men running our media, we no longer have to kill the dreamer, it is possible just to kill the dream.
3. Sometimes I’m amazed that we are still breathing. With horrible abuses of animals, the planet and human kind, it’s amazing that we are still here.
4. Our lack of compassion and love could actually consume us. However, we are still being given signs from the universe, glimpses of hope and opportunities to rise up and live up to our promise.
5. Hey, man, you don’t talk to Colonel. You listen to him. The man’s enlarged my mind. He’s a poet-warrior in the classic sense. I mean sometimes he’ll… uh… well, you’ll say “hello” to him, right? And he’ll just walk right by you. He won’t even notice you. And suddenly he’ll grab you, and he’ll throw you in a corner, and he’ll say, “do you know that ‘if’ is the middle word in life? If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you, if you can trust yourself when all men doubt you”… I mean I’m no, I can’t… I’m a little man, I’m a little man, he’s… he’s a great man. I should have been a pair of ragged claws scuttling across floors of silent seas…
6. America, our country is under indictment. And we will be found guilty if we don’t act. If we allow these nasty, malicious people, who harbor so much hate with views that separate us from the rest of world, to continue to tell us how to think, we will be found guilty of charge one.
7. If we allow leaders of a political party that only know one word, and that is “no,” to work against the best interests of our country, we will not only be found guilty of charge four, we will be sentenced by God to self-destruction.
8. And we have allowed hurtful, spiteful and small-minded people like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh to scare the love out of us.
9. In one of the most telling moments of the past nine months, the skepticism that the President was met with after his compassionate speech in Cairo was shocking. He conceded nothing in that speech but love. This is the route that is prescribed to us by all of the great prophets in the Bible, Qur’an and the Torah.
10. Before the president even had time to wish his dog a happy birthday and kiss his daughters on the cheek as they left for school, the vicious, hate-filled and at times, racist, attacks began.
If you’re still having trouble choosing, read through them once more and take note of the only quote that doesn’t give you the heebie-jeebies.

I do not pretend to know who God will or won't destroy even though on any given day there are one or two people I might kinda hope God does discombobulate even if He does not destroy them. I also make no pretense of thinking I am capable of discerning the good Christian from the bad as I think God is more than capable of sorting that all out by Himself without my input. I do think, however, that following Obama might just be a pretty quick way to get on God's bad side and therefore I believe Mr. Simmons has shown us that God has already discombobulated him.

NotAlwaysRight, God does not destroy, that is something humans do minute by minute on this planet. A "good" Christian is one that knows Jesus Christ intimately, what he said, what he did and understands the words he used in the context he used them, and, commits his life to Christ and lives his life every day like Christ lived his. What I find helpful is to remember that according to the New Testament, Jesus was human, he felt all of the emotions we feel and he understood what it was he had committed himself to endure in order to be the final and ultimate sacrifice for eternity for us and the forgiveness of our sins. We often do not understand we must live like Christ in order to take advantage of the promise his death and resurrection offered us. Not follow a whole bunch of laws, rules and regulations. Tough stuff and extremely to do every day of a person's live. just remember, we do the the good and bad things…we make the decisions, we choose our paths…God is impotent to change it because that was his promise when he allowed us to become, free will. Those that blame God have no understanding of what Christianity is all about.
And don't forget, DDT saved 100 million lives before environmentalists had it taken off the market. I haven't seen any numbers on malaria or any other mosquito-related deaths, but the 100 million is a well-respected estimate.
Hatred for our great country IS the central tenet of the New Religion.
We can't survive much more of Obama & Company. The huge programs he intends to create are pretty much impossible to undo.

It's difficult to judge whether you're even worth engaging on the subject unless you give us some clue.
In any event, you couldn't be more wrong (in my opinion, of course). ApNow isn't the best film ever made, but it's absolutely ridiculous to rank it among the worst. If it happens to be on TV somewhere (un-hacked), I'll generally choose watching it for the gazillionth time over watching practically any movie made today for the SECOND time. It may be that I just have lousy taste in movies, but I have a DVD library that I think would pass muster with most serious critics. And ApNow is definitely in it.
P.S. Sorry, can't let this pass. You're right that Duvall was great, but he also played a particularly flamboyant and memorable character in a movie full of them. When I look at ApNow I can't spot a bad performance in the bunch, with the possible exception of Brando, who chews up the scenery, spits it out, then picks it back up and chews it a little more. But Colonel Kurtz is intended to be an enormous, pompous, twisted train wreck of a man, so in the end he fits, or can be made to fit, the story.
P.P.S. I like the original cut. I don't care for the longer version at all. If that's the one you're talking about, I'd be more inclined to agree with you, although I still wouldn't go that far.

This is the perfect example of people all having their own God. People have cherry picked what they like and what they don't like and changed the King James version of the Holy Bible to suit their own ends till everybody now worships their own version of what they perceive God to be. Saying everyone has their own version of who God is is like saying everyone has their own math. It becomes very confusing and then nothing adds up – ever.

All I know is that those living bibles that became more popular in the sixties and in the seventies along with the freaks and the Jim and Tammy Bakker crap were the beginning of different interpretations and worship of the people instead of Jesus. and that was the beginning of the falling away from the true Word of God. All I know is the only Bible every allowed into our house was the King James version. The Holy Bible. I don't know about anything else. I'm no expert in ancient biblical artifacts nor a scholar and don't pretend to be. I only know what I know and believe what I have been taught by my precious Mother.
And even there you're not reading "originals", but multi-generational manuscript copies. No nonfragmentary NT text older than the 4th Century, nor OT older than the 9th (except for the Qumran scrolls).

I'm not exactly sure how, even sticking with the Sermon on the Mount, you can miss the entire point of what He is spelling out for us. God is serious, and we best get with the program. I can't even make it through a cursory read of that passage without cringing and wincing at least a little.

First of all, Jesus never forced anyone to do anything – giving is suppose to be from the heart. If we are taxed to death, than we will not be able to continue to give to the charities of our choice. The government would give our money to companies such as Acorn and SEIU. Secondly, Simmons and other Hollyweird liberals should put their money where there mouth is and give 90% of their income to charity – of course it will be a cooled day in hell before that happens.
You should watch "Hearts of Darkness" for clarification and separation of myth from what constituted reality for the filmmakers. It's a documentary composed of recent interviews and film footage/audio recordings made by Coppola's wife during the shooting. It offers some very interesting insight into the making the movie.
And for anyone who hasn't seen it, there's a DVD set out there with the original (I agree with the opinion the original cut is the best) and the redux version and some documentaries on the film's sound design and editing. I picked it up for under $15 bucks and it was definitely wort it.

I do have over 44 years of experience watching movies, especially while deployed during 23 years of active duty. After the Gulf War, "AN" as well as some other popular war movies were no longer appealing to me. After being recalled to active duty and serving in Iraq, they are even less appealing as war movies. My problem is it comes across to me as an anti-military movie in reference to Vietnam veterans, yet I see it praised alot as a great war movie. I think "Lost Command" did a better job showing the loss of leadership and control during a war while still being respectful to those that serve.

Actually, you're right, it is a bad war movie…but I've never really thought of it as a war movie. It's set during a war, and has soldiers, but it doesn't feel like a war movie. Since the first time I saw the movie Armageddon I have been a huge fan of The Comet.

Before the election, I researched Obama's promises & beliefs wherever I could.(Fox helped) I told my friends who were Obama supporters just what promises he had made. They all said," No I don't believe in that, but congress and senate won't allow him to get away with those things."

Interesting article. I think that your descriptions of faith were unnecessarily flippant ("invisible man in the sky", the references to the various beliefs such as Budda, Allah etc then adding batman and Robin") however the gist of your article was well done. Please note however, that it is my understanding that while Russell is a self-made succesful business man he didn't come from the "kid from the most difficult circumstances imaginable hustling and struggling and pulling himself up by his own bootstraps". His dad was a Public School adminstrator and his mom was a New York City park adminstrator. Sounds pretty middle or upper middle class to me. In fact, he was attending the fairly prestigeous "New School" university when he left to persue his music dreams. This by no means detracts from his accomplishments.
Having said all of that I agree that Russell telling people that failing to accept Obama means America will be destroyed is way past the pale. I'm sure that more that a few people who look up to Russell are probably swayed by this drivel.

I'm para- phrasing Russell but he says that God will sentence the earth to self destruction if we continue to listen to the party of no (the GOP). Too many people that like and respect Russell will take this to heart. I've seen this guy on TV and his beliefs are really kind of out there however when challenged he has a real problem defending them (or making himself understood). I have a lot of respect for his building a business empire (although some hip-hop and gangster rap isn't the lifestyle I think I want the young to emulate) but his belief system is pretty well out there.
