I disagree about the placement of Bat 21 on the list of top twelve under-rated movies. Bat 21 was movie based on a great book about Lt. Col. Iceal Hambleton. Hambleton was a member of the crew of EB-66C flying radar suppression missions in VietNam (wild weasel missions). He had in years gone by worked with our nuclear missile program; so when he was shot down while flying as a crew member on one of these wild weasel missions and survived; the Air Force mounted a balls to the wall effort to get him out of there, so his knowledge couldn't be exploited by the enemy. The book was fantastic because it outlined how sharp Hambleton was when they came up with a code to get him through the mine fields that had been spread from the air around him to keep the enemy off of him. They couldn't explain the code to Hambleton; but what it amounted to was they figured the distances that had to covered and the directions and turns he had to make. They then radioed him (on his rescue radio) i.e.. the 14th hole and the name of a golf course that Hambleton had played at. He was an avid golfer and had a photographic memory of every hole he'd ever played. So Hambleton avoided all the mine fields and got to the place where the SEAL and South Vietnamese Ranger were to pick him up by dug-out. The who book was fantastic and the writers and producers of this movie butchered it in their interpretation of this book. If you haven't read the book you might find this move at least interesting. But, if you have read the book this movie a poor substitute. I remember how excited I was when I heard this was being made into a movie. I almost walked out of the movie it was so far from the book. What Lt. Col. Iceal Hambleton did was amazing as was the successful rescue effort. Do yourself a favor read the book; and skip the movie.

It's because most of these actors (right or left) do not understand cause and effect on the world stage. They think all in the world would think like us if their leaders let them and that the UN is a democratic organization. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynehan had the most clear picture of the UN and he was a democrat. Read up on his view to see what I mean.

It lost me completely near the end when Hackman looks down and sees light on the ground coming from his bullet wound. What crap.

Jon,
A wonderful article. I didn't realize I missed Gene this much until I read it. I'm a child of the 70's and Gene Hackman WAS the 70's.
Well done, once again.

I couple of seconds of sniffling makes great acting? I'll say it again, John Wayne couldn't act. The reason a lot of people, including Nolte, think Wayne was great is because he represented what they think America is or should be. Stoic, powerful and always noble. That's fine but he's not Nolte's favorite actor because of his acting skills. When he won over Dustin Hoffman for True Grit that was a real shame. There are lots of other actors better than him. You think Nicholson just mugs then you are paying attention. But forget about him, Henry Fonda. James Stewart and Gregory Peck, all peers of Wayne's, could act circles around him.
