Socialism and Christian-Bashing Crash at Box Office
by John Nolte
Tough times for leftie Hollywood. Nothing’s gone right this week. None of this is their fault, of course. In order to understand that it might not be a good idea to rally around a child rapist, bash religion in a religious country or trash capitalism in a capitalist country you have to live in the real world…
Michael Moore’s CAPITALISM tanks!
Ricky Gervais has launched his second consecutive box office bomb as The Invention of Lying (Warner Bros) only mustered $2.2M or so to start the 3-day. The comedy should finish #5 with approximately $6.5M for the weekend. …
[B]ut the biggest disappointment of the weekend is Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story (Overture). After a $57K per theatre average on 4 screens last weekend, the picture broke to a wider 962 locations with terrible results. The “documentary” only sold an estimated $1.3M in tickets to start the weekend, and it will finish at about $3.9M for a PTA of less than $4,000. That soft opening will almost certainly make Capitalism Moore’s weakest-grossing movie since 2002’s Bowling for Columbine ($21.5M domestic gross).
As if all this isn’t enough for our friends on the left to take in, you have $800 billion spent to get us to 9.8% unemployment, the *poof* of the public option, and a nine-month World Apology Tour resulting in Rio getting the Olympics.
And what can we expect as a result of these “teachable moments?”
What’s that phrase again…? Oh, yeah: More Of The Same.

I was given tickets to Moore's "documentary". I didn't go see it for FREE.
Michael Moore is the typical elitist Hollyweird so called documentrist who slaps the face of the system that he makes money off. I cannot stand him. Here is a man that got his first break on the backs of capitalism and now he bashes it, lying telling interviewers that Capitalism never helped him. What a crock! This guy is an idiot and he has gotten a pass from the liberal media with his documentaries which I might add are misleading and full of lies. If he was so worried about the evils of capitalism, then he should go and live in Cuba or Russia. Let us see if he could make a documentary on the evils of Marxism/Communism without being thrown in jail in Siberia or in a dank jail in Cuba. What a hypocrite! People got it! They are rejecting this documentary and I hope it disappears from the theaters next week…People are tired of their country being bashed by the administration and by this putz. Michael why not go to Africa and give all your money away to the poor and give up your carbon footprint private jet and fly Coach..What a liar he is and it comes through on TV…the people weren't fooled this time.
Amen – and I'm going shopping to celebrate the public reaction to these filmmakers – and that's the truth.
Good column & perfect closing sentence.
I wish people like Ricky Gervais would just shut their pieholes about politics and religion. He's a funny guy–Extras is one my favorite TV shows–but his dime-store cultural critiques are more than enough to drive me away. Between this and finding out that Ethan Coen signed the Save Our Polanski petition … now the only two movies I wanted to see this fall are out.
BREAKING NEWS
They are going to force H1N1 vaccines on children in Massachusetts…Our put you in JAIL!
http://mywhitehouse.org/2009/10/03/forced-quarant...
Be prepared
The sad thing is, they just don't get it.
Hope and change!!!!!
Clearly the only reason his movie is tanking is due to capitalism. Competition in the marketplace of ideas or movies for that matter should be forbidden, so movies like his could attract more eyeballs that would otherwise go to more intelligent and interesting works of fiction. The great irony here is that under true socialism no one could afford to waste their scarce and precious disposable income on such nonsense as a Michael Moore film. So maybe capitalism isn't so bad after all, eh Michael?
9.8% unemployment? Just think how bad it would be if they HADN'T spent the 800 billion…

Who gave you tickets thinking that'd be a neat gift? I'd immediately repudiate such a "friend" immediately!
Hope that SOB Moore mortgaged his house (or whatever he lives in) to finance that piece of crap and gets foreclosed. Then he might have to get a real job and stop loading his tax returns up with creative credits and deductions that allow him to pay no taxes. Warning to MacDonalds: Don't hire this bum; he'll eat everything in sight.
Well, that's a pretty disturbing video. Where are all the people who cried about Bush violating our civil rights by authorizing the cops to listen in on overseas phonecalls to known terrorists? They're OK with the cops coming in to my house to involuntarily vaccinate my three-year-old granddaughter?
We are losing our collective minds.
Over my dead body will they give my son that shot!
I thought he was going to lose weight after his "Sicko" movie. Guess he'll always be just another whining, no- account, liberal fat ass.
Sorry to veer off topic, but the "public option death" is a ruse. The current Baucus plan will destroy private health insurance and lead inexorably to government single payer. This is how the Left has adapted to their publicity setbacks, by deception and distraction (as they always do). Robert Tracinski has the complete write-up.

Its days/weekends like this that gives one hope for the future. Obama's failure in Denmark, sorry Chicago,
its not the city its Obama and the event. Aside, now if we can just kill the litany of upcoming bills the President and the Dims have in store for us. To lesser events like the failure of Mr. Moore's movie failure to draw a heart beat at the Box office. All in all a very good couple of days, Throw in the public exposure of Acorn and the NEA and we have the makings for a party. Life is good and in 2010 its going to be even better.
Why do these anti-capitalist leftwing swine live here? My family like millions of others fled from communist/socialist nations, many risking their lives to come to this "racist greedy capitalist" country. Why don't these liberal cretins put their money where their mouth is, pack up, relinquish their citizenship and get the phuq out.
On a previous post about Moore I pointed out that despite his rhetoric, his success actually represents free market capitalism in action. As an entrepreneur he offered a product that consumers found worth committing their money to and he was rewarded for his risk and effort. Whenever Moore opens his mouth about the failures of capitalism we should respond by explaining just how he benefited from the free market capitalist system, including having the option of not using union labor on his latest film. Of course now Moore is learning a harsh reality; what the free market giveth it can taketh away. Consumers drive the market and consumers have rejected his latest offering. That is the essence of the free market.
No, no, this is way different. See, in Bush's case the government was being manipulated to serve the ends of a bunch of greedy capitalists and warmongers, which is obviously bad. In this case, good liberals are in control, and are only doing these things on behalf of our common interests, to help us. That automatically makes government interference good. When will you people learn? Tsk, tsk…
There will be MORE Hollywood carnage as the boycott of the numbnuts who signed the petition supporting Polanski commences. I know that I FOR SURE am going to carefully vet EVERY film I see and if any of these people are connected, I'm not giving them one dime and will make sure everyone I know does the same.
It's delicious seeing MM crash and burn. Perhaps the stress will help with the weight.
I am very proud to profess that Mr. Moore has never received ONE penny from me and will NEVER receive one penny from me. That is how capitalism works.
Here Here, Catherine. No chance weight loss, stress yes, his cure eat more. As has been said, maybe he will explode. I jest.
The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results.
The public is tired of the lefts constant bashing of our traditions and our values.
But they still don't get it.
Until they understand human behaviour they have no business telling anybody how to live.
People will do just fine if the government would just get the heII out of the way.
Yeah, and Barack Obama has saved the 152,000,000 jobs that still exist.
How much would someone have to pay you to see a Michael Moore movie?
We used to have a few people who thought differently, but made strong arguments for their case.
You're being far too generous.
Moore uses clips from this this old educational film strip on Capitalism. But not this clip:

Unconstitutional. Anyone involved with this should be imprisoned. More people die from the regular flu than the swine flu. Every parent that was forced to have their child vaccinated should sue the state into financial ruin.
uh huh,… and the fact that nearly all of it hasn't actually been spent yet, just a meaningless detail. I dearly hope you were just being sarcastic, and I missed your point.
The point is to me, Obama and his crew couldn't run a popsicle stand without first pumping a million into it, then hving the government take over the management of it, then regulate it's competiters out of business first,..
but hey,..
who doesn't want a one flvor only, 50 bucks apiece government sponsored twin pop?
yay….
I've seen a few around on different sites. Possibly this site is too difficult for them?
I hope they return. The old game of whack a lib is such fun.
Tho you folks do most of the heavy lifting
5 thumbs up tho only one counted.
Moore's new movie bombed. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.
No wait, by all accounts he ISN'T a nice guy. Okay, it couldn't have happened to a not-nicer guy.
I'm just saying and repeating what a talk show host said "Liberalism is an untreatable mental disorder" and Mr. Moore certainly proves the point. What a total waste of skin!!
LLOROB, there are definitely a few, and I stress a few, ok ones; I was just giving them a little jab.
And I agree, whack a lib can be a lot of fun. I live in LA so there are plenty here.
This week has been a good news week for me John – first The Ego has landed, then Letterman gets caught; now all the leftist movies are tanking. If I had some champaign I'd break it out but my breakfast OJ will have to do

you are correct- he's not only not a 'nice' guy but is actually a full bore jerk. Even his fellow lefties don't really like the guy- he's cheap, selfish, arrogant and spoiled.
Other than that he's ok…
Here's the delightful thing about that, though, Catherine…
No one in meaningful numbers is going to boycott anything due to Polanski. It's like the people who "swore off" Woody Allen – 90% of them hated his movies to begin with (too cerebral, too jewish, etc.) Martin Scorsese has nothing to worry about. Unless there's some kind of bombshell, L'Affaire Polanski ends about a week after he's either sentenced or let go before extradition. You're lesson: NEVER hinge a "movement" on the actions or attention-span of a mass-culture that turns Jon & Kate into "celebrities"
They still have the pile of unspent stimulus money soon to be at their disposal should they need it..
They come in second only to the unions.
The failure of types like Moore and Obama, is that they are oblivious to how they are perceived by others. They are so self-absorbed in their own opinion of what life should be like for everyone else, they are unable (or unwilling) to detect the odor of their own bullshit. Those of us who do not dwell within the world of celebrity worship could hardly be less surprised. Have another donut, Michael. Keep staring at the mirror, Barack.
Old_Tom
Collective being the operative word here.
Why –because they wouldn't be allowed to whine there.
You have a point in that movie goers may have short memories should the kids or someone in the family desire to see a movie badly.
From afar as I am just a movie fan. If its true that the "stars" are no longer able to 'open ' a movie, political movies don't seem to make any money, Woody Allen enjoys very modest success if any, I would say the public has a more of an effect on the business than you are willing to give credit and the list can go on.
I feel your pain.
You guys just don't know the REAL Moore, oh everything you said is true, you guys just don't know the REAL Moore.
I love how the more they struggle the worse it gets for these libs and their delusional hate-propaganda. Looks like the hollywood left's efforts are flyover movies.
I want my heroes back. I never used to view a movie with politically tinged glasses, but the more these narcisists start going 'off script' with their 'heartfelt' rather than intellectually developed opinions it TURNS ME OFF. I don't want the hero to be a 'metro-sexual' hermaphrodite like Jonny Depp. Where are the John Waynes of today?
Anytime I see a movie that has Sean Penn, J. Garfallo, Alec Baldwin, ,,there are so many more but I am thankfully having a mental block to list them all. As crude as it was the puppet show "Team America, World Police" done by the writers of South Park, really nailed it when it comes to our growing list of Hollywierd celbs. Please I ask you, I enjoy the escape and mental stimulation that movies can bring, STOP ruining it with flapping your gums and saying really stupid things off screen. If I don't know your twisted political leanings, I might actually be able to watch them again. Oh, and by the way, you screen writers better start coming up with some better story lines than simply trashing this nation. There are real heros out there, they walk among us, they just are no longer to be found on screen.
perish the thought- we already know more about Moore than we ever cared to. Let's just say Goebbel's would like him just fine…
Mikey the Moron is an exemplar for the overindulgent beamer bolshevik who continually lectures flyover rubes about their wasteful ways while jetting to the next black-tie affair on a private Lear Jet. Please continue to stuff yourself with chocolate eclairs, you miserable tub of bacon drippings.
Too true!! All the infrastructure money, the roads, the bridges and all the rest. Not only was the sign maker the only one to get the business, what work there will be will only go to union jobs. 85% of the 'trades' in this country are non-union, which means all that work will still not change the un-employment numbers even when they 'speed it up'. STOP IT ALL RIGHT NOW. Take the remaining Stimulus money and put it into direct credit lines of $1 million each to thousands of small business owners and you will see the jobs numbers rise overnight.

Are you Bill Brandt from Yuma?
According to polls America is 40% Conservative leaning, 40% Independent, and only 20% Liberal – Progressive. Moore's move is designed to appeal to a more radical segment of the 20 points on the left. Not a good business plan. Much of Hollywood's screed is designed to try and shift public opinion towards this number. it is getting shop worn. Success of movies with strong values underneath like Toy Story, Up, or even Abrams version of Star Trek seem to indicate an end of Moore's run is in the offing.
Old Tom: Think if they had spend the $800 billion to remove income tax deductions for a year. How many jobs would that have saved or created?
Good idea, except for the obligation that goes with it, all small businesses must join a union to get it.
You saw the requirements that went to GM and Chrysler
I don't trust this bunch to flush the toilet after use.

I don't trust this bunch to flush the toilet after use.
Maybe someone gave them to the friend.
I'm in contact with many liberals on a daily basis, I live in Canada (don't hold that against me) and even they are bored with M.M's schtick. Even the dumbest liberal knows on which side their bread is buttered. They can see through a be-speckled , obese, middle-aged, white man who's a multi-millionaire and the means in which he acquired said millions "almost" as easily as any conservative can.
Nope…
And it's a lot of skin, Remember saggy, baggy elephant?
Wow. Makes you wonder what country we live in….
On a medical note….I recently took the Type A (seasonal) flu shot. Visiting with the nurse who gave it, I remarked that I had no intention of receiving the H1N1 vaccination. The answer given to me, in a hushed voice, was: "Don't take it–I most certainly will not. Wait to see what it does first. There are no guarantees that it's safe. The swine flu vaccine given in the 1970s killed more people than did the flu it was supposed to prevent."
Yeah, he was being sarcastic. I've seen other posts from him. He's an intelligent thinker who "gets" what is going on in our country right now.
One of my instructors knows some nurses, and they're saying much the same about the H1N1 vaccine. Basically "too rushed with not enough testing"
Ahh, man, thanks for the good news! Moore has landed on his fat butt! Of course, if he wants space to land on, he'll have to kick Michelle's enormous rear to one side first – not to mention the fact that Oprah's gargantuan butt is also littering the dirt as well. Man, now THAT would be something worth videotaping – a big white whale (harpooned with his own box office) plopped on the ground between two pigs in lipstick. Now that mockumentary is something I would watch it!
I saw one of his standups, and I believe I recall correctly when I recall that he made a point of saying it was not his place to make political jokes. I believe he had something to say about Iraq, and he said, "Don't worry, I'm not going to get political here." I admired that. I wanted to see Invention, but I'm not going to now that I know what it's really about. It's his right to make the statement, of course. And my right to stay away.
His "racism test" on Extras is still one of the best things I've ever seen, though.
Until Congress bails him out, of course.
I've never seen one, either. Not even Canadian Bacon, which I might have seen because of John Candy, but I was onto Moore by that point.
Hehe. "Landing on his fat butt" made me think of this.

A job at my former rate of earnings…
I wouldn't mind two hours in the air conditioning, as long as someone wakes me up after my nap…
My Walther rides on my hip with 17 little friends, each with their warm copper jackets, snug in their nickel-plated hulls…
Gotta love 147gr. Hydra-Shoks…
Sounds to me like the market is working fine at the Box Office…
LOL Like a loaf of fruitcake at Christmas? XD
Didn't you see the story on Fox News – pregnant women hospitalized with the swine flu have 28% mortality?
This virus is evolving faster than the paranoia surrounding the vaccine.
ZOMBIELAND FTW! Funny as hell!
Seven out of ten liberal people who comment about Rush Limbaugh cannot help but rant about Mr. Limbaugh's weight. Apparently, they think this removes any validity to the Conservative message. Michael Moore, however, is spot on with his message, and liberals always seem to be surprised or ignorant that Moore makes millions schlepping his anti-American documentaries. Because of his gross and sloppy appearance, they FEEL he is a man of the people.
Liberalism is a socialist disease.
I don't ask much of you oh Lord and I hope you will take this into account when I ask you this great favor. Lord, please let someone knock Michael Moore's fat ass out. Lord, I ask that you let Michael Moore take a massive phantom punch to the jaw and, just for good measure dear Lord, a couple extra ones while he is going down. And, Lord, please let it be live on prime time television, preferably on Fox News so that an audience could witness it and be entertained by it.
There sure seems to be a push to defuse the word "Socialism". The fact is, this form of economics (Socialism) is very caustic to the human spirit. If you're allowed to innovate and risk your money and reap the rewards – but then have those rewards confiscated for the greater good, why innovate or risk? Some will but most won't in that environment. That is what is happening to some extent now. The money people are waiting by on the sidelines to see how the health care, and cap & tax bills, etc… will turn out. If it becomes too expensive to do business in the US when/if these bills are passed, job creators will bring there businesses elsewhere (and the resulting jobs). God help us.
Your revenge fantasies notwithstanding, Moore could probably finance his movie out of his own pocket, write the money off and still be rich. I´m a shappy as anybody that his newest isn´t doing well, but let´s stay realistic.
I often wonder why movie theatres don't play old and/or classic movies. I would pay to see classics like the Wizard of Oz, or Gone With the WInd on the big screen. I would also enjoy going to see movies like ET, or Home Alone, or anything with Clark Gable in it on the big screen. Frankly, I don't bother going to theatres to see the crap they put out these days. It doesn't look like too many people do anymore. Crap is crap and that is what is showing anymore.
I say, good bye and good riddance. There are still some who leave an inane comment and get 23 replies, none of which they ever read. Personally I´m tired off wrestling with these pigs, as the saying goes. I spent far too much time trying to educate liberals in 2008. Remember their childish enthusiasm for Obama, their arrogance. No argument was too vile or stupid for these guys. Most of them would just repeat what they´d read on some leftwing blog or campaign e-mail. If I never hear from them again it will be too darn soon.
With unemployment at 9.8%, inspite of that fantastic government stimulas, you might consider the want ads for fictional companies (such as Yoyodyne Propulsion Systems, Initech Software, the Worldwide Wicket Comp., etc.) found at http://www.ruamoviegenius.blogspot.com
They're all fictional companies in fictional worlds, you know, the kind of world Mr. Moore's films are made in.
Wow, that is really sad. I didn't see the report, but that's even more reason to avoid the vaccine. It may be impotent in fighting newer versions…
I don't know. I went to an informal meeting with a guy whose job is to track epidemics and pandemics for the US Air Force. He said that the H1N1 flu shot is basically the same flu shot people get every year–just with the appropriate proteins for H1N1. I asked him from what he had learned about it, if he felt it was safe, and he said yes, as safe as the regular flu shot.
I also asked him if he would be giving it to his children and he said, "Yes. Absolutely." His wife and children were sitting there in the room at the time.
I am a "liberal" and this is JUST A FILM!! Jesus Christ, get a hold of yourselves. You'll never have any fun or enjoy your life if everything that happens in the world has some political meaning to you. I have my family and friends and school and just plain fun most of the time. Thank God!! I guess I am the troll you all are referring to but I just came on here to read the reviews. If you all keep getting tied up so emotionally in things that are, quite simply, beyond your control most times…you will end up wasting your time being angry and cynical about NOTHING really. Cause at the end of the day, if you're not happy…I doubt politics has anything to do with it. God Bless you all and take care!!!!
One last thing, I'm not saying that you should not have an opinion or care about what's going on in your country. I do. But if I let it consume me, well then that's just stupid. I may disagree with your comments but that's ok. I may agree. Who cares!? I don't need to be validated in that way. But it just seems sad…that's all. I think that's why I would probably be called a liberal but you would be surprised at how many things we probably DO agree on. Ok, that's it, I won't troll in and infiltrate your site again and I wish you all the best. Back to Huffington Post you send me, lol.
"Borat" was more of a documentary than any of Fatso's opuses. And speaking of "Fatso" did you get a kick out of the newspaper ad that shows Moore with about 100 kilograms photoshopped off? Stupid, smarmy AND vain.
Trying to defeat someone's argument by focusing attention on their weight or appearance is a sign of weakness in the debate.
I suppose that we will hear differing opinions from differing sources. Odds are that most who receive the H1N1 flu shot will be fine. Still, there lingers the question of it's side effects 30 years ago. They were pretty severe. The main point is, however, that as citizens of a free country, we should have the freedom to choose whether or not we want to take this shot. We are the one who runs the risk either way.
Martha, you don't sound happy. All people are doing here is discussing. When we discuss, it doesn't mean we are unhappy. Can you wrap your wet noodle brain around that?? Yes you can!!!
IT also covering illegal that why they are stealing 500 Billion from Medicare, they how pay into all their life .Just to buy their vote.
The only unfortunate thing about this is that Moore's crappy movies only cost a few bucks to make. Even this poor opening will still probably turn a profit. For a man who hates capitalism so much, he sure is an effective capitalist…
You use "Jesus Christ" without thought. It seems you don't know Him. Would you like to know Him?
Just another example of boycotting with my dollars; I must not be the only one.
Same here.
I got five tickets and a press kit, from someone who definitely does NOT know my tastes or level of awareness.
I burned them all.
And really… who gives away FIVE tickets?
That's like saying, "Here you go. Tell one of your friends their woman has to stay home."
I'm noticing a marked lack of Liberal comments on some of the stories here lately. We used to have a few people who thought differently, but made strong arguments for their case. Then we had a handful of trolls who just posted rants, then ran away. Now we're seeing a general lack of Liberal comments, but absolutely no one trying to defend what's going on right now. I think it's very telling that there isn't one post (not even a troll) trying to defend the Liberal icon Moore.
Methinks I'm sensing a chink in the, "I'm Liberal so I'm right about everything" armor.
Under true socialism, the movie would be a blockbuster because the government would force every citizen to see it, just like schoolchildren were forced to see "An Inconvenient Truth."
I asked him about that vaccine from the 70s and he said that because this swine flu shot is based off the current flu shot people get every year it will be much, much safer. Basically he said that vaccines have improved over the years in safety and that this H1N1 was not made like the one back in the 70s.
But I agree–people should not be forced to get shots.
I saw the "Lying" movie with Ricky Gervais today in Quincy, IL. People quietly got up and left during before the movie was over. I had read the reviews, but it was worse than they said. I actually started to doze off and I had to force myself to watch it.
A waste of money …. Don't go.
