The View: “I know it wasn’t rape-rape. … It was something else but I don’t believe it was rape-rape.”
Are those who declare themselves “child advocates” required to go through some sort of accreditation or licensing program in California? Because if they are, maybe Whoopi missed the part about actually “advocating” for children, as opposed to, say…. millionaire, celebrity child-rapists.
Here’s the definition of “advocate”: to speak or write in favor of; support or urge by argument;
I must lack the sophistication necessary to understand how this works, but it doesn’t sound like “child advocacy” to me when someone argues on national television that drugging and sodomizing a thirteen year-old girl against her will doesn’t meet the definition of rape. Or could it be that Whoopi’s definition of advocacy is to “speak in favor of” splitting hairs for those who do irreparable damage to children?
Maybe it’s me. Maybe if I spent more time in Hollywood I would … understand.

Advocate may mean "to write or speak in favor of" but it doesn't say they have to "live it". Typical Hollywood Hypocrite.
Not entirely shocking, considering it's coming from a woman who was a grandmother by the age of forty. So any kind of sexual restraint is lost on this woman.
That she's that clueless to excuse rape, it obviously becomes clear that there's not a lot of grey matter under that big mess of hair.

The relationship between Hollywood royalty and the common folk is really quite remarkable given the fact that we have nothing much in common other than our fascination with their celebrity. The Roman Polanski arrest reminds us just how different we are from them. We look in the eyes of a 70 year old man who drugged, raped and sodomized a 13 year old girl, admitted his crime and then fled the country to escape punishment and we see a child molester who should be in prison. They look in the same eyes and see a celebrated colleague, a dear friend and the victim of a justice system that underestimates the greatness of his artistic contribution to society. If the film industry was made up of the kind of people they would like us to believe they are, Roman Polanski would be a poverty-striken child molester getting what he deserves instead of the successful Hollywood hero he is.

I remember Whoopi making jokes about President Bush referring to his last name as slang for . . .well, we all know. Then she got into a discussion with one of the conservative talk show guys about the need to be more civil in politics. In other words, Whoopi = hypocrite.
I'd like to know if Whuppee ever sounded off in disgust about the Catholic Priests during the molestation scandals a few years ago. Surely, that wasn't rape-rape either.

I don't understand why 'ordinary' people care so much about what these people have to say and I don't understand the fascination so many otherwise normal people seem to have with 'celebrity' lives. Can you imagine if someone Whoopie doesn't like said this in their own defense? She's be outraged at the suggestion that there are different levels of rape. What's next? Is she going to recommend that the girl "deserved it"? That is usually what comes next.

Did any of you who have commented actually see the episode of the View when Whoopi Goldberg made that comment? She wasn't saying that what he did wasn't rape or that what he did was okay. She was trying to set the legal facts straight and talk about what he was actually convicted of. She made it clear that she wanted to state the facts from a legal standpoint. At no time did she ever claim that what he did was okay. Watch the episode again and maybe you should get your facts straight.

I remember the 70's in terms of rights for women. We were fighting every step of the way to get into law schools, medical schools, and into areas of employment commonly thought of as male occupations. Rape was even more underreported than it is today. And a victim would have her past, her clothing, and her reason for being out in public torn apart by defense attorneys. Women fought long and hard to show the world that sex had nothing to do with rape, that power had EVERYTHING to do with the crime of rape. But still most women didn't report a sexual assault that happened to them. I am liberal and I hate crimes against women and children. I am very worried that another subtext here is not about the rich and privileged getting away with crime but that sexual assault against women and children is somehow sort of ok, really. I Europe we see tv commercials where a young woman is embarrassed by a photocopier photographing up her skirt as a male colleague walks in. Polanski was originally charged with six serious felonies that were pled down to a pretty lenient single count. THAT is a scandal.

Perhaps we should thank Miss Whoopi along with other celebrities that support Polanski. Their comments create such a public outrage that does not and will not serve him well at the end. Pay with our tax $$ for our Representatives in the House and Senate. They have a job. To stand in our stead (represent us) in the making and enforcing of the Law by which we all shall be governed. They take an oath to put aside personal aspirations and serve the needs of the 'people'. (sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't).
Pay with our entertainment $$$$(or discretionary funds) for Directors, Writers and Stars (etc.), to entertain us. They have a job. To distract us from the cares of the world and take us on a journey of imagination. They take no oaths and make no promises to us. They are what they are, entertainers -bought and paid for-to do a job.
The goal of an entertainer is to rise to the top of their profession, make good $$ and enjoy the victory. If their goal was to speak 'for' the people they would go into politics. Now somewhere along the line some of them have gotten confused, having attained their goals they become convinced that gives them license to speak for "the people". We the People have a conundrum. How do we show support for their professional abilities, while at the same time letting them know they do not speak for us on issues? More over how do we let them know we disagree with the issues they support?
It is something each person will think about and decide for themselves. (in some cases no thought will be expended- but hey what can you do?).
I personally am interested in how the people here decide. If you would be so kind, take a moment and reply.
A–will continue to support celebrities abilities, ignoring their opinions.
B–Will not support celebrities if I dislike (disagree with) their opinions.
C–Never pay attention to celebrities opinions.
D–Will rant and rave about celebrities opinions when I disagree, but still pay for them to entertain me.

The reason that she was drunk and drugged was because the 44-year-old Polanski forced it on her. It's like these girls who go to a bar or club for a good time only to have some skel slip "roofies" into their drinks so that they can take "full advantage" of them. Feminists are among the loudest to screech their indignation when some alledged rapist claims, "Hey, she was stoned – she wanted it!" and now a number of them want to excuse what Polanski did to a child because it happened 32 years ago! At least this didn't happen in Iran – the poor girl would have been arrested, convicted, and stoned to death as an adulterer.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Whoopi Goldberg for adding Rape-Rape to the vernacular. There's no reason a boycott of Polanski's Hollywood defenders couldn't be successful. The technology is available… so, one never has to purchase a film or film ticket ever again. Just take a glance as to what technology has done to the recording industry. And in the end….Such endeavors could be looked upon as simply as not being Theft-Theft.
Many things said on this site are true and relevant. However, isn't it time we stop with words and take up action. I suggest we begin an immediate campaign to remove Whoopi from the View. This isn't going to happen by speaking to the Network as they are as bad as she is so we need to organize to convince every single sponsor on the show to remove their ads immediately. One thing is sure – that money is a larger motivator for the networks – than doing the right thing.

So she was a teen – yeah, she was thirteen. Anybody who has experience with kids knows that there's a big difference between 13 (last year of junior high/middle school) and 18 (when people in many states are considered legal adults and of the "age of consent"). The kid was not even in high school – didn't have a driver's license – and these apologists (some of them, anyway) want to excuse this because the girl was a teen! Hollywood – where abject fecklessness is an art form!
