Polanski Vs. Kazan: A Tale of Two Oscars
by John NolteSome are under the mistaken impression that Hollywood’s rallying behind behind Polanski because he’s a a fellow artist. That has nothing to do with it. Polanski made a few classic films but his resume pales in comparison to the great Elia Kazan — a man who, until his death in 2003, remained something of a pariah in Hollywood even though sixty years had passed since he named names before the House Un-American Activities Committee.
In Hollywood there’s something worse than being a communist (or a child rapist) and that’s being an anti-communist. Kazan, a former member of the Communist Party of America, died a die-hard liberal but once he came to understand the crimes against humanity committed under Stalin he left the communist party and eventually went before HUAC where he named Stalinists, not innocent liberals. He also never apologized:
“I’d had every good reason to believe the party should be driven out of its many hiding places and into the light of scrutiny, but I’d never said anything because it would be called ‘red-baiting.’ [. . .] The `horrible, immoral thing’ that I did I did out of my own true self.”
In 1999, the director of more classic films than I can list was awarded a long overdue honorary Oscar, and this was how the Hollywood elite greeted this fellow artist:

Oh, so that's what hypocrites look like…
They're all about "the children" until one of their own does something to harm a child.
They're all about speaking truth to power until one of their own says something they don't like.
The difference wasn't lost on me either. Tattling on Communists 60 years in the past is a much worse crime than butt raping a middle schooler 32 years ago, then running from justice.
But the past few days have shown me that maybe among the Western entertainment/media elite, butt raping a middle schooler isn't a crime at all. I wonder how many of those petition signers have "interesting" pictures stored on their computers or have made trips to Thailand over the years.

Hollywood "liberals" and "feminists" see nothing wrong with a man in his 40's giving a middle-school girl alcohol and tranquilizers, then forcibly raping her up her rectum while she weeps in fear and pain and begs him to stop. To them, it is merely the transgressive artistic statement of a daring and gifted director.
This will be remembered for a LONG time. Nobody who signs a petition or speaks out in favor of this perverted wretch will ever again see a nickel of my entertainment dollar.
Polanski's life will be "ruined" (for a while at least) if he pays his dues in jail for something he chose to do. Am I to feel sorry for him?

At least some of the support of Polanski is easy to understand. Hollywood culture is sex-drenched, has been for many decades, with many stars of the business "starting out" rather young. Then there is the alcohol and drug abuse, also starting early.
Who knows how many in Hollywood are just as guilty as Polanski, the difference being they were never caught and made to face charges in a court of law?
That is the point, no one will know as long as no one talks. Thus no love for squealers like Kazan.
The 'artists' who support Polanski are complicit with his decadent sexual tastes. Kirstie Alley has (in her twitter), pointed out that a man who likes to sodomize a drugged child once, isn't going to stop doing it so long as he gets away with it, which I am sure in his 'sophisticated' 'artistic' nuanced' circles he does.

Hwood is high school with lots of money. When you accept that the mental development of the typical Hwoodian stops at around 15 it makes their actions a lot easier to understand. I've got 2 teenaged kids. They are capable of great insight and creativity. They can also be astonishingly ignorant. Just like any 15 year old. The trick is getting past that.

When I saw the video of Elia Kazan being awarded the Oscar for his lifetime achievement, and they showed Ed Harris and Nick Nolte and others not participating in the ovation, I thought of a particular passage in page 484 of Kazan's memoirs, in which he wrote that he wasn't a forgiving man, did not ask for forgiveness from (nor gave to) his enemies, and this sentence: “Damn them and the company they keep.”.

You know, this wouldn't be done as much by "us" if those that we are trying to speak to would simply open their minds and ears and LISTEN to and THINK about the combined meaning of the words that are being spoken or written. It's when we really believe our message should be heard; in this case, that it's just plain wrong what Polanski did – the rape-rape AND the fleeing, that we make sure that it is. Right now, there are a lot of messages that we are trying to get people with limited views to understand. Fortunately there are more outlets available now for these messages to get out. True, most of the audience did clap. You need to add Stephen Spielberg and Kate Capshaw to the list of those who didn't, however, and I've never felt quite the same about Stephen since that night. Richard Dreyfuss was another protester, although I don't know that you can see him in this clip. The award was announced in advance of the Oscars and that gave stars time to decide whether they were going to join in the silent protest or not; some of them went on record about it.

Despite some of its members having moral disorders, Hollywood has the best talent in the world. Its script writers are second to none. Its movie making ability can never be matched.
I think it shows that Besson understands the protective, sacrificial nature of real masculinity. Men walk away from those movies wanting to emulate Leon or Corbin Dallas. Nobody walks away from "Rosemary's Baby" wanting to emulate Guy Woodhouse.

I've lived in L.A. I've lived in Detroit. Chicago's reputation for corruption is legendary. I've seen first hand what it's like living in a liberal city vs. a conservative one, and it's bigger than party affiliations. I'm not interested in seeing those liberal policies rolled out on a national scale, and the president's response is to tell folks like me to shut up and stay out of his way. How very Chicago of him. Pelosi's response is to call me a nazi. How very California of her.
The liberals didn't feel like staying silent when they believed Bush was corrupt businessmen backed by bible-thumping red-staters. Conservatives aren't staying silent about corrupt limousine liberals backed by Big Union and organized crime. If you don't see the similarity between ACORN's massive voter fraud and the phrase "selected not elected" then you're blind.

Who says Cheney speaks for me? You and I agree that this nation desperately needs cleaning up. Replacing the administration that wanted to treat folks like you as subversives and potential terrorists with an administration that wants to treat folks like me as subversives and potential terrorists isn't the sort of "change" I "hoped" for.
Hope and Change should NOT mean "It's OUR turn to be the oppressor."

i think this is an excellent comparison and really highlights some hypocrisy in some people.
However Kazan's actions did hurt people. They weren't raped, … but they were forced to flee the country and end their careers, based on rumors and innuendo. So many of those blacklisted were never communists. You can say 'it was worth it to get rid of the ones who were'… but that is not how things should work in a free country.
some conservatives seem to have no problem with drugging and raping adults in Abu Grahib… as long as it is in the name of stopping terrorism.
I assure you Mr Skookum that if Andrea Dworkin were alive, should would be pouring out volumes of insightful and devastating criticism of the 'rape culture' that pervades society, and hollywood, and she would whittle Polanski down to size.
Unfortunately she would also probably be supporting human rights for gay people, which would make her persona non grata amongst the modern conservative movement.
Many feminists would love to speak out against rape more and make more alliances, but you see the Christian Right feels that feminism destroyed the family, so there you have it, there won't be much of an alliance. Just try it at your net conservative meeting, talk about rape, I guarantee some guy will say 'oh the real problem is women accusing men falsely'.
Also, please note Al Frankens amendment to try to make it so rape victims can have rights when they are gang raped by the people at KBR contracting in Iraq… conservatives are against that amendment. Why? Because they are worried about 'interfering with contracts' … so what are they going to do to solve the problem ? Ally with feminists and make some workable bill to rectify the situation?
Liberals are not the only people who practice hypocrisy and political games.
