How a 30 year old state offense only (statutory rape) which occurs millions of times a year in one form or another in the USA, becomes a Federal/International pursuit of an elderly man who purportedly settled earlier with the victim for a half a million dollars is curious.
Hopefully it's not a case of the Obama Administration wanting to throw a bone to the Religious Right/conservative Republicans hoping they'll like him more or be more approving of his administration… cause it ain't gonna happen.
Something akin to Clinton and the Reno Justice Department… "See we're doin' something about pornography, child predators and family values.. etc.."

"Wink wink"… As any professional group "Hollywood" has it's own good ole' boy fraternity. Difficult for American Hollywood to get too worked up over what is to them traditional "get a pass" behavior of adult male actors, directors & producers with underage (age 18 in California) girls… Errol Flynn, Elvis Presley, and the casting couch system of female actress wannabes including 16 & 17 year old high school dropouts and senior hi grads anybody? On the European side this fondness among Polanski's fellow contemporary French & Spanish etc. directors producing R rated sexually oriented fare in which the middle aged male lead has as his main love interest a teenage school girl. Routinely produce films featuring middle aged males in sexual stuations with under 18 minor actresses or vis versa (The Godfather, Blame It On Rio, The Name of the Rose, Pretty Baby, The Tin Drum). Qualudes aside, for a 13 year old who had previously engaged in intercourse twice, drinking alcohol & getting naked in a hot tub of swingin' actors for sex in most all of the Continental European countries is/was legal, or within a year or two of being legal.

It´s not just Hollywood. As far as I know, Polanski also had sex with a 15 year old Nastassia Kinski. With the knowledge of her father.

Pee Wee´s Big Adventure is such a sweet movie. I simply cannot condemn Reubens. As you point out, his was a victimless crime. Unlike what Polanski did.

The victim wasn't bought off. She received a civil settlement separate from the criminal case. She testified before the grand jury and was ready to go to trial. Polanski copped a plea and then ran when he heard the words that every defendant in the state of California hears when he cops a plea: The court is not bound to the terms the prosecutor and defense attorney agreed to. He panicked and ran; she was ready to stand and fight.
