Polanski May Finally Face U.S. Justice
by John NolteNothing mitigates director Roman Polanski’s unspeakable crime. Certainly Polanski has dealt with personal tragedy on a scale few of us can understand, but that’s not a license to drug, rape and sodomize a 13 year-old girl. Nor is perceived misconduct on the part of trial judge, nor is the forgiveness of the victim (who reached an out-of-court settlement with Polanski).

And this may come as a surprise to some in Hollywood, but helming a few cinematic masterpieces doesn’t turn someone who anally raped a child into some kind of tragic hero… In all the revisionist history, the simple fact that Polanski plead guilty to “unlawful sex with an underage girl” is seldom mentioned at the top of the special brand of rationalizations extended to our celebrity class.
Well, finally, after 32 years, justice may be done. At the request of the U.S., the Swiss nabbed the 76 year-old fugitive and may extradite:
Director Roman Polanski was arrested by Swiss police as he flew in for the Zurich Film Festival and faces possible extradition to the United States for having sex in 1977 with a 13-year-old girl, authorities said Sunday.
Polanski was scheduled to receive an honorary award at the festival when he was apprehended Saturday at the airport, the Swiss Justice Ministry said in a statement. It said U.S. authorities have sought the arrest of the 76-year-old director around the world since 2005.
“There was a valid arrest request and we knew when he was coming,” ministry spokesman Guido Balmer told The Associated Press. “That’s why he was taken into custody.”
Polanski, the director of such classic films as “Chinatown,” “Rosemary’s Baby,” fled the U.S. in 1978, a year after pleading guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with the underage girl.
If only some on the Hollywood Left were as outraged by a confessed chid rapist as they are by everyday Americans.

Mr. Notle –
Sorry, but if someone did what you allege Polanski did to one of my grand daughters, the only "out of court settlement" they'd get from me would involve some duct tape and a nicely sharpened pair of pruning shears.
The family was bought off with money? They lost me right there.

I predict that Obama will pardon him at the urging of Bill Clinton.
The mother pimped the daughter out all over town. And I don't say this to "excuse" Polanski.
Very interesting that the Swiss are doing this now. They appears to be a story-behind-the-story that's slowly eeking out, so stay tuned. Meanwhile I highly reccomedn the documenatry "Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired" which is filled with fascinating details about this case.
I doubt Polanski gave Barry enough campaign donations for that. Is he even eligible to donate? A fine print note for Democrat campaign contributors, I know, but still…
When I logged on this morning, the top story on Yahoo was the 'outrage of Poland and France' over Polanski's arrest. Man, I don' t know about France but I am certain that the only 'outrage' the average Pole would feel about Polanski was that he got away with anal rape of a 13-year old for so many years.
And don't get me started on the hypocrisy. Tapping one's foot in a bathroom stall is heinous – but anal rape of a 13 year old isn't? (Like I said, don't get me started.)
Some days it really does seem that the counter revolution is finally happening.

So why mention the mother at all? Implying the kid was some kind of "pro" certainly does not mitigate the acts.
"I predict that Obama will pardon him at the urging of Bill Clinton" is an excellent prediction. The degenerates of Hollywood finance the coalition of scum, slime, filth, vermin and manure that run the Democ-rat Party. There is an old saying that goes, "He who pays the piper calls the tune," and the piper that is the Democ-rat Party is paid by the tort shysters, union thugs and Hollywood degenerates. The documentary David Ehrenstein mentions is excellent in showing the bungling of the LAPD and the legal system. But hte underlying problem now is the forces of the Democ-rat Party media who will be making all kinds of excuses for Polanski as they have for the past few decades.
The media's take on this arrest is to blame the judge – as they put it, the judge 'tried to renege' on a plea bargain with Polanski who was "only" supposed to serve 42 days. Hmm. Anal rape of a 13 year old is only worth 42 days of 'evaluation'. Shoot. Well, now we know the judge's opinion of children. And the media's. And the latter wonders why so many of us aren't listening to them anymore.
I predict Obama will push for prosecution. It's a risk-free chance to win points for defending traditional values. Nothing to lose. Hollywood is too far into Obama fealty to raise a fuss.
Why did they take so long anyway? He certainly is no Osama.
I hope because the trial will not be officially completed until the sentencing, it gets decided he does have to register as a sex offender despite when the actual offense took place. Imagine him having to stay away from any Hollywood events where child actors are present. Yup, that would be interesting.

If there's any illustration of the chasm between the media and me, than it's the fact that their outrage is because a convicted child rapist is now being arrested – whereas my outrage is because a convicted child rapist is ONLY now being arrested.
If it was me I'd prefer a 38 ounce Louisville slugger to the pruning shears, but to each his own.
Justice may not be swift, but it is always inevitable.
But his Hollywood buddies sure did.

ugh, would not be enough mind soap to cleanse me after that.
As an aside, in the original Rosemary's Baby, Rosie is raped by the Devil. Her head is to the left and the monster animal mounts her missionary style screen right to left. I vividly remember that shot, but have never seen it since.
Another scene that I never see anymore (this one funny) in the origal had the great Ruth Gordon holding a whole pickle above her mouth as her head tilted back and then in some sort of reference to oral Statanic cult sex swallowed it whole.
I am not accusing Polanski of Satanism. The movie is better with those shots in int.
However, in my experience folks who fool with Lucifer and Satan most often end up having made a mistake….
Said another way: Polanski messed with the bull. He maybe got the horns.
So did a lot of corporations that are getting bit right now. Barry will take care of loyal minions and allies, as long as doing so benefits Barry. Polanski does not offer enough, and his "Hollywood buddies" do not want to sacrifice their place in the New World Order by appearing to favor Roman over Barry.
Actually, since this appears to be a state offense, Obama would have no authority to grant a pardon. And since the arrest has occurred, and been made public, federal involvement would be very minimal, if any. For the most part it is now only a matter of coordinating the logistics of bringing him from Switzerland to California.
I would use rusty and dull shears.
It never ceased to shock me how Hollywood stood by praising this SOB. he should have been blacklisted. Those damn Hollywood elite, with their concern for those in need… but we all know compassion in Hollywood can only be found when there is a paycheck and publicity to follow.
Considering that so much time has passed, including the statute of limitations for the original offense, his forgiveness by the victim. and the fact that pretty much all the original prosecutors are dead, I'm not sure if he could be successfully retried. (I will be thrilled to be proven wrong) From watching the HBO doc and reading a lengthy Vanity Fair article about it, Polanski unfortunately seems to have a good case as to how the prosecution pulled an (illegal?) bait-and-switch on his plea bargain sentencing all those years ago. Hopefully, it will take many, many months to sort it out, however, and since he's an indisputable flight risks, he'll have to wait it out in our lovely Los Angeles jail system. (for fun, Google "l.a. jail overcrowding.") Too bad he's a rich guy who can afford good lawyers, but as Phil Spector is discovering, the L.A. court system sometimes does indeed get it right.
I'm offended that the media is offended.
The girl's innocence was lost forever. Meaning, she was only a child up to the age of 13, and an adult for the rest of her life.
Thanks for the welcome note of snaity, RT. I know the faithful in here won't be pleased — and claim you're ust a tool of the Kenyan Usurper.
It's far far too late for "Justice to be served" in this sadly grotesque case.
there may be other news about this arrest. Would it have anything to do with the fact that Hollywood has to be hurting for money (a lot of said money was borrowed from the biggies like Merrill Lynch…)
I don't follow.
This guy is a pure scumbag,if he was any dirtier he'd be a Chicago politician.
Polanski is probably not a classic pedophile, who trolls grade schools in a clown outfit.
Although I am not absolutely sure of that, he is much more likely to be the result of the Laurel Canyon/Hippy drugged-out-for-years-on-end hippy scene. See: http://www.davesweb.cnchost.com/.
This author's conclusions and slants are bogus. First off, he is too young to have a clue. Howver, the facts that he pulls together give the context for Polanski's crime. To some extent it was incredibly bad drug-hazed judgment that was the rule of the day in the Canyon.
He screwed up, and it was monumental. Part if the worst of it was that when he fled to France, he was received as good guy introducing that 13 year old to a normal sex life.
In my experience, the problem is that articles about Polanski that do mention what he did always mention it in the way the article you quoted mention it, that he had "unlawful sexual intercourse with the underage girl," leaving people with the impression that the only problem was that she was underaged. While that's certainly wrong, that the girl he raped also said she was drugged, coerced, sodomized, and told him to stop. This wasn't simply an unplanned moment of weakness with a willing girl who was too young, which some might find forgivable, but something that would be considered rape even if she had been five years older.
So, who's gonna play Polanski in his inevitable film bio? If there is any justice in this world, it'll be Paul Reubens. Apparently, they're both perverts, and let's be honest, Pee Wee and Roman look quite a bit alike.
Obama would have no authority to grant a pardon.
One would think that, but today the news is reporting that Mr. Obama is considering extending the school year. It is beyond me why the President of the United States would have any say on the length of the school year, yet apparently we have conceded control of that to him some how.
I also didn't understand why he summoned a Cambridge, Ma. police officer and a college professor to the White House over a local arrest, yet there they were drinking tax-payer beers and eating tax-payer pretzels for some unkinown reason. Or why, he had some legal authority to circumvent the bankruptcy laws to shovel funny money to auto companies.
If Mr. Polanksi asks to the see the Presiden't Birth Certificate, he can probably get his charges dismissed.
Too bad, I heard is next pic was in the works…
ACORN the Movie—Triskaidekaphiliacs
A plea of guilty isn't vacated by any statute of limitations. His guilty plea acts as a conviction, makes any S.O.L. entirely moot and leaves sentencing the only issue. Suspect that President Obama, no matter how inclined or influenced he may be to do so, will not pardon a child rapist.
Thank you! See? It pays to ask! What's the potential jail time for fleeing abroad for 30 years? But please don't count me among those cynically thinking Obama might pardon him–that's never going to happen.
Well, I have a touch of arthritis. I'd need them sharp.
Is the "group of peers" thing still over with? If not justice is certainly unobtainable.
Pruning shears? Too messy and labor intensive for a man who deserves nothing less than a messy death with the least amount of effort – I say .00 over-under with enough distance so as to not allow splatter, and thus extra effort expended to clean.

Watch what happens to Polanski. If this Pedophile gets off with a hand slap, it should scream a warning that some people are above the law. This creature, no matter how talented, drugged and raped a thirteen year old girl. Pled guilty, then fled the country because he was too much of a coward to face the consequences of his actions.
If this pervert would repay all the tax dollars spent to try to arrest and extradite him over the years, and then donate all his remaining wealth to charities that provide assistance to raped children, we might consider that he truly is sorry for his actions. He's been living high for years, supported by people and countries that have placed his talent above his responsibility to others. I wonder how many other children all over the world have fallen victim to this creep!
Well, I don't think it implies the kid was a "pro"; it implies the kid's parents were scum who put their daughter at risk for their own financial gain. Eerily similar to the Michael Jackson case in that regard, and yes, it does mitigate the act somewhat in that the girl was offered to him. It isn't like he picked her up off the street on her way home from junior high.
I'm NOT excusing Polanski; he can rot in Hell. But I don't think the legal case is a slam dunk.
Just for giggles…
Let's say that Obama extends the school year. Because they will be working extra days, the teacher's union demands – and of course, gets – an increase in salary for the teachers. Then, at some point during the administration, the year-extension is either declared unconstitutional or Obama rescinds it on his own…but the increased salaries stay where they are.
Or am I being too cynical?
Actually, I think he looks kinda like a younger Hugh Hefner.
If this happened in a trailer park, suburban tract home or one-bedroom apartment on the west side of town, everyone would be outraged.
That the woman has forgiven him is a non-issue as she was a child at the time. A child who was driven by her mother to an unsupervised photo shoot orchestrated by an older man and at Jack Nicholson's house.
That he raped a child and fled proves that he is a coward. That elitists make excuses for his behavior is reprehensible.
Woody Allen, anyone?
OK…… Finally got the Lice Chat working properly for all users. I hope

Few things display Hollywood's moral blind spot more than how it reacted to Roman Polanski's rape of a 13-year-old girl. Not only did a lot of big ticket names continue to work with the guy in France for years afterwards, they gave him an Oscar! (I refuse to watch "The Pianist" or anything he's done now.) If you ask anyone, they'd shrug and say it happened a long time ago or maybe he wasn't in his right mind or that the victim has forgiven him, so we all should too.
Bullcrap. The guy has never paid his debt to society. He may still yet walk away from it all a free man; the victim may refuse to testify. But shame on anyone who treats him as some misunderstood soul whose "art" excuses what he did. I apply the same standards to everybody. He needs to be thrown in jail and registered for life as a sex offender.
We may never know, someone said in this column that justice moves slowly but inevitably.(spitz512)
Maybe, if you consider dying of oldage as justice.Since he is a French citizen there may be something in the extradition agreement the French and USA have that may not allow his appearance here to be celebrated.
We await the details should they materialize.
Oh, pleeese! Don't you bible thumpers have anyone else to point a finger at? Say, Rush limbough and going back, Jimmy Swaggart or that other noxious team Tami and whats his name? Debt to society? The hollywood rich? Well, I guess it's understandable. I can see all of the trailer trash typing with one finger on their PC's envious of a person who has CONTRIBUTED something worthy to the worlds culture. Before you start waving the noose ask yourself: What have I given to this world?
Is he going to be retried? Isn't criminal flite to escape justice the charge. I would hate to think he gets another shot at a tehnicality.
Before you start waving the noose ask yourself: What have I given to this world?
Because if you can answer that you've given something to this world, then the rules of law and decency may not apply to you.
Well, Jimmy Swaggart is now one of those people nobody except is followers (who are now few in number) care about. He is utterly disgraced.
So, guest, you're comparing Rush's drug addiction to the rape and sodomy of a 13 year-old girl?
The guy directed some movies. Big whoop. Doesn't mean he should get away with this.
And by the way, saying a movie director contributes something worthy to the world shows us how un-informed you really are.
The person who developed the polio vaccine contributed something worthy to the world. Polanski just makes movies and rapes little girls.
Very good points. But criminal law is one area which has remained somewhat close to the Framers intent. (At least so far.) My comment was directed to current law, which may or may not bear resemblance to Obama law.
Well at least there is someone who is honest enough to state that they think non-consensual anal intercourse with a child is a good thing. Pity they didn't register a permanent name.
I do wonder though, what exactly constitutes a sufficient "contribution" to earn one the right to do this to a child? Apparently a few good movies is enough. How about a police officer who risks his life every day by just going to work? Or would he have to have actually taken a bullet to earn the right to "do it" Firefighters? Do they need two blazing buildings?
There ARE moral absolutes in this world. And no, the fact that someone has transgressions, does not deprive them of the ability to demand that they be adhered to.
Uh.. the legal case is already a slam dunk. He pleaded guilty and fled the sentencing part of his trial.
[...] Read more and join in the discussion over at Big Hollywood. [...]
I believe he pled to statutory. There's a big difference.
About time, and we all know what happens to child molesters in jail. Bubba's coming for a visit….
Annoyingly pesky needless redundancy notification alert: "always inevitable."
But, yes, in this life or the next.
Pee Wee practiced safe-sex.
Could they snag Mark Rich next?
I see Poland is going to protest the arrest of one of their elite favorite people. I also read that Poland has legalized castration for pedophiles. Let's make a deal, Poland!
I second that recommendation. The fact is Polanksi did serve out a sentence in Chino for this crime. The problem is, the judge in the case had an ego problem and his buddies kept saying he was too lenient so h reneged on his deal with Polanski and was setting him up for more time even though he served out his sentence as a model prisoner. And it turns out the judge also had an affair with someone way too young. It's a very bizarre case. People shoiuldn't judge Polanski before seeing all the facts.
Obama would have no authority to grant a pardon.

Throw his butt in jail for ten years with no parole. Send a message to the Hollywood leftist that no one is about the law. You rape a kid you do time. Then on top of it he is a fugitive that is a whole other crime. We as a nation better stop making excuses for the excesses of our perverted drug induced film community. Put him in the same cell with Phil Spector and throw the key away, They deserve each other.
Why would that idea (Obama pardoning Polanski) even come up? Obama's poll numbers aren't bad enough? Maybe he really WANTS to be a one term president. Let's start by pardoning high profile child molesters, then finish with Charlie Manson and Sirhan Sirhan just before the 2012 election.
People, use the brains God gave you.
So, "GUEST", your argument seems to be that if you're an artist it's OK to ass rape a 13 year old?
Thanks for the moral clarity. Dumbass.
Don't put him in a cell with Phil Spector. Put him in a cell with a 240-pound black nationalist who's doing life without parole and has a 13-year-old daughter.
We need to make better use of our resources.
Interesting. I didn't recall that about the time served.
"Needless redundancy". Nice touch.
As reprehensible as all that is, I still believe that what Polanski pled to, and was sentenced for, was statutory rape. Basically he cut a deal, then the judge tried to renege on the deal.
The sleazy details are irrelevant to the legal case as he was not convicted of the violent crime.
What was Ruebens doing? Rubbing one out in some sleazy adult coin-op joint or something like that? Did he offend the sensibilities of the other clientele?
OK, that's pretty gross and embarrassing, but it hardly compares with Polanski.
I think Paul Reiser would make a good Polanski type. And I don't believe he's currently working.
Think Marcellus Wallace and a couple of pipe-hitting n_____s with a blowtorch and a pair of pliers. I'd get medieval on his ass.
And the non-union teachers? They all quit. North Carolina no longer has a public education system (not that the one they have is great now) and the teachers who care move to the private realm. Competition ensues between the plethora of brand new private schools, and the quality of education goes up. Other states and the federal government can't read the writing on the wall, and throw more money to the other NEA. Unionized school systems put out below-average students, while private schools continue to spew forth intelligent future taxpayers. Private schools are rendered unconstitutional, because of unfair competition or some such bull. Unionized teachers keep their jobs, while all non-union teachers get fired. Obama gets credited with saving X number of jobs, where X equals the number of unionized teachers. The rape of the non-union teacher is largely ignored by the press.
Wow. Must have taken how long ? Funny, I question the timing – Hollywood wants him back , the media needs to try distract from the fact that they are going to pass that monstrosity called healthcare. Problem lies in the fact that most of America is either to young or doesn;t care.I personally think this is again all smoke and mirrors, they will slap the child molester (which I think everyone was paid off to begin with ) on the hand and give him back to Hollywood. They will throw him a parade and it is sickening. Middle America cares about their healthcare and not Hollywood. AG (Marc rich)Holder won;t care one way or the other he;s too busy making sure our rights get taken away.
Polanski needs to suffer the consequences of his actions, even if they occured years ago and even though the woman that he raped has forgiven him. Being forgiven doesn't mean a "get out of jail for free." Bring him back to the states and make him do his time. Do the crime, do the time.
Steven R. Covey said "While we are free to choose our actions, we are not free to choose the consequences of our actions." Apparently Polanski thinks to can do both and there are plenty of people who think the same damn thing. Once the consequences have been removed from the action, why should he care. It will be a bad example for others who think they can do things like raping young girls and then getting away with it and then winning the praise of the Hollywood elitists and their sycophants.
HA HA HA. Now that is one deal I'd be happy to see. Not only castration, but do the "Lorana Bobbit" on him.
A Fatty Arbuckle for his times. And he and Nicholson, having enjoyed their bacchanalia through the years, fueled by mounds of cash and blow, reaching for the little blue pills at the bedside, mindful of their weak hearts, finally visited by their own karma. Casting error for Bucket List, should have used Polanski, with Liam Neeson chasing them.
Was his French squeeze there when they clapped the cuffs on him?
He's got two sets of charges to deal with. The problem with the charges stemming from the rape is that he'd entered a guilty plea and the deal was going to be time served (he's spent some time in custody for "evaulation"). The judge thought that was too lenient and I guess the DA's office thought better of it too, so they were going to renege on the plea deal. I think that sort of leaves the original charges up in the air. Good luck to Polanski if he wants to plea not guilty, because he's already paid a civil settlement to his victim.
The other set of charges stem from his fleeing the country. I'm guessing what will happen is he'll get a wrist slapping sentence for jumping town and he will plead guilty to that and the rape charge. Since this is California, not Texas, and I'm sure Polanski will have some high-paid attorneys, he'll get probation or something and booted out of the country, so he can go back to his chateau or whatever in France.
Ok an old guy drugs a 13 year old child and pokes her in the butt. This may be a crime, depending on who does it . If it's regular person, teacher, coach, pervert, crazy uncle Louie.. then yes it's a crime. but if it's an Elite Hollywood type then the rules are different. If the accused has an Emmy, an Oscar, A little MTV moon guy or is a friend of say Geroge Clooney then they are exempt from prosecution . And in fact not only are they except of punishment, they are held up as a percecuted hero…or even A VICTIM . These rules apply if the child is at least 10 years old. If She's under 10 then all bets are off. Unless it's an Arab country…then of course she's stoned.

Me either. I strongly doubt there's any sort of conspiracy here. It looks like the L.A. District Attorney is just not a Polanski fan.
"The Pianist" was a pretty good movie, but I can live without "The Pianist II" if it comes down to it.
Marino has it right. Temporary custody should do the trick. Into the teneral population of a penitentary with hardened felons. Then let the word get out that this guy raped a 13 y.o and sodomized her.
Give him about a week of temporary custody, then release him.

Ehrenstein is quite correct, watch the Polanski documentary.
Among other things, Angelica Huston comes off badly. Not only was she present during the incident (and did nothing to stop it), she criticized the VICTIM. Let's run that again — Huston in the film criticizes the VICTIM. All of 13 years old, a child incapable of making any adult decision.
Let's be clear here — Hollywood is corrupt from top to bottom. Even supposed "good people" like Angelica Huston are so twisted, corrupt, and depraved by worshipping famous people, that they cannot make a simple moral judgment.
Let's also be clear — the legal system, having one system of leniency for the Polanskis, the Vicks, the Michael Jacksons, the Rob Lowes, and so on, has lost legitimacy. Separate and unequal is no way to maintain support for the legal system, and in fact it has no legitimacy. Even less than Jim Crow, which did not abuse the Majority Population. The current legal system is even less sustainable than "Segregation Now, Segregation Forever" declarations by George Wallace. Because it is the majority that suffers, not a minority.
Hollywood, ALL OF IT, has no morals. None at all. Not a shred of decency.
The guy is a low life, its that simple. He was man enough to have relations with and underage girl, and ply that girl with Wine and drugs to boot. But not man enough to except the punishment for the act! At worst it would have been a couple of months in a White Collar lock up and it would have been over and that would be that, his circle would not have cared a wit, since they shielded him all these years anyway. They should come down on him hard, not for the rape, but for running from facing the piper in this sordid little play. 15 to Life in a lock up would be about right. Will it come to pass no, As George Orwell once said "Some Pigs are more equal to other Pigs" Obama will pardon the low life. All we can do as citizens is just buck up and bear it, and don't go to there movies.
You lie! The mother allowed her daughter to take photographs for Vogue magazine with a well respected member of the entertainment community. That's hardly pimping.
And the documentary made by Hollywood elite and introduced at Sundance is highly sympathetic to Roman. It is interesting but still doesn't excuse his behavior. I still want him to do his time for the crime he was convicted of.
Middle aged Roman forcibly raped the 13 year old girl in her vagina and anus. And the judge is always free to sentence people to what he wants, there is no law that says he must abide by deals that prosecutors and defense attorneys agree to. In fact, Polanski's own lawyers told him that, and that is why he fled.
After pleading guilty to statutory rape, he did 42 days of a psychiatric evaluation. He never was sentenced for his crime. The sentencing was going to occur the day after Roman fled the country. Judges are not required to accept any deals that prosecutors, police, or others may make when people plead guilty. Roman knew that. Roman's lawyer's knew that. In fact, that's why he fled as a convicted felon before he ever was sentenced.
It's possible that he could be sentenced to time served and probation, but he has to stand before the man and accept his punishment on the terms the man gives him. He doesn't get to make the rules.
I don't even think Larry Craig's behavior was all that heinous as he was only trying to engage in consensual sex with another adult. To me it is no worse than winking or waving or any other flirtatious behavior. What made Craig's behavior abhorrent is his long record of fighting against people that are homosexual, when it is apparent that he is homosexual (or bisexual) himself.
Polanski's behavior is abhorrent and I cannot fathom all the people willing to forgive forcible rape of a child just because he made The Pianist. (or grew up in the holocaust, or because he's been on the lam for 32 years, or because Sharon Tate was killed)
He's only now being arrested because he actively avoiding being arrested. It is solely his own fault that he is being arrested 32 years after the fact. If he would have followed the law all of this would be behind him and he'd be out making movies again like the guy who directed Powder and Jeepers Creepers movies (who molested a 12 year old boy).
Are y'sure that's really the comparison you want to make, given that the Arbuckle incident is largely viewed as a tremendous miscarriage of justice resulting in two mistrails and an aquittal? Essentially no legitimate evidence was ever brought to trial, the prosecutor considered the only supposed eye-witness who implicated Arbuckle to be so unreliable he wouldn't even let her testify, and most of the legal attention was the result of sensationalist newspaper editorials orchestrated by William Randolph Hearst and muckracking "morality" groups furthering their agenda by painting Hollywood's libertine social scene as a danger to the general public. How far we've come, eh?
The judge isn't required to follow through with any deals that prosecutors and defense lawyers make. Roman and his attorneys both knew that. That is why he fled. He didn't want to be properly sentenced by a judge and go through appeals.
Roman didn't have a group of peers convict him. He pled guilty to a crime then fled before being given his sentence. The time he spent in jail was for psychiatric observation prior to sentencing.
Y'know what's nice? That people are capable of discussing things like this strictly in the relevant areas of law and justice pertaining to the case at hand.
I mean, can you imagine how ugly a conversation like this would get if people just used it as a means through which to vent ideologically agenda-driven diatribes about an industry who's membership by-and-large votes differently than they do?
What is this wharbrgbll? This is a distraction to get our minds off of the health care debate? Are you freaking serious? You've been watching too much Glenn Beck.
Polanski's warrant was refiled by George W Bush (and rightly so). It just took a long time to confirm Polanski's location in any particular place that was in a country that would extradite him.
MovieBob, you are absolutely right, this was better left to Kenneth Anger. But I would differ with a description of Hearst being a moralist. Inge would say he's a good aim, Davies would say he's a good lover, and everybody would say he was a great newspaper salesman. Excuse the easy reference, but was using abuse of another pretty face like Virginia Rappe. Careful if you're looking for chinks in the armor to deflate the argument though, these old dogs were rutting around screwing everything that moved, the younger the better. Somebody should bring Beatty and Bob Evans to the dock , but then they weren't dumb enough to get caught giving tweens a lude. Polanski got caught, maybe he wanted to, he's way twisted.
Yes California, Los Angeles county is a problem, but he is white. If we're lucky maybe justice will prevail
and maybe he will bunk with Spector. Some how that has pleasing possibilities to me.
Nah, you are correct, if France can't keep him home he still won't miss a ski season on the Swiss Alps
Its no surprise that Hollywood has come to the defense of Polanski. After all they have gone overboard in praising the pedophile with praise over the years. Hollywood's immorality speaks for itself time and time again. Perhaps Hollywood, Ca should be the place where all pedophiles can find a home without harassment. Since they like pedophiles and protect them so, lets ship the pedophiles to Hollywood Ca, and Beverly Hills. If anything its about time Polanski pays for his crime. This crap that he has suffered enough and should now be left alone is hypocritical liberal bull crap. Polanski is a criminal that has led the good life for way too long.
Oh MB, now we know, there's way too much time spent defending Fatty Arbuckle. You're a democrat and voted for Clinton and Obama, maybe Carter………….LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Say hey to Olbermann.
The victim wasn't bought off. She received a civil settlement separate from the criminal case. She testified before the grand jury and was ready to go to trial. Polanski copped a plea and then ran when he heard the words that every defendant in the state of California hears when he cops a plea: The court is not bound to the terms the prosecutor and defense attorney agreed to. He panicked and ran; she was ready to stand and fight.
Y'know what's nicer? That there is literally not a a single factual statement in roue's entire post. Really quite astounding.
Here you go :

You´re just down on Polanski because he is black!
Pee Wee´s Big Adventure is such a sweet movie. I simply cannot condemn Reubens. As you point out, his was a victimless crime. Unlike what Polanski did.
What will be your contribution? Learning to spell?
It´s not just Hollywood. As far as I know, Polanski also had sex with a 15 year old Nastassia Kinski. With the knowledge of her father.
"Wink wink"… As any professional group "Hollywood" has it's own good ole' boy fraternity. Difficult for American Hollywood to get too worked up over what is to them traditional "get a pass" behavior of adult male actors, directors & producers with underage (age 18 in California) girls… Errol Flynn, Elvis Presley, and the casting couch system of female actress wannabes including 16 & 17 year old high school dropouts and senior hi grads anybody? On the European side this fondness among Polanski's fellow contemporary French & Spanish etc. directors producing R rated sexually oriented fare in which the middle aged male lead has as his main love interest a teenage school girl. Routinely produce films featuring middle aged males in sexual stuations with under 18 minor actresses or vis versa (The Godfather, Blame It On Rio, The Name of the Rose, Pretty Baby, The Tin Drum). Qualudes aside, for a 13 year old who had previously engaged in intercourse twice, drinking alcohol & getting naked in a hot tub of swingin' actors for sex in most all of the Continental European countries is/was legal, or within a year or two of being legal.
How a 30 year old state offense only (statutory rape) which occurs millions of times a year in one form or another in the USA, becomes a Federal/International pursuit of an elderly man who purportedly settled earlier with the victim for a half a million dollars is curious.
Hopefully it's not a case of the Obama Administration wanting to throw a bone to the Religious Right/conservative Republicans hoping they'll like him more or be more approving of his administration… cause it ain't gonna happen.
Something akin to Clinton and the Reno Justice Department… "See we're doin' something about pornography, child predators and family values.. etc.."
