Michael Moore: Obama’s Rise to Power Helps Fight Against Capitalism

Michael Moore’s “Capitalism: A Love Story” premieres at the Venice Film Festival today. Reuters has most of the details, the usual-usual from the 55-year old mega-millionaire. But buried below the usual-usual is the real story — a point of agreement with we right-wingers:
Amid the gloom, Moore detects the beginnings of a popular movement against unbridled capitalism, and believes President Barack Obama’s rise to power may bolster it.
Well, let’s hope Ted Kennedy’s enjoying his day on the slopes because Mr. Moore and I just found some common ground.
Here are the other bullet points. To save you time, the following words are not used together in describing the film: ”personal” and “responsibility” — “taxes” and “too high” — “Michael Moore” and “gave all his wealth to the federal government.”
1. “Capitalism is an evil, and you cannot regulate evil,” the two-hour movie concludes. “You have to eliminate it and replace it with something that is good for all people and that something is democracy.” …
2. The bad guys… are big banks and hedge funds which “gambled” investors’ money in complex derivatives that few, if any, really understood[.] …
3. [L]arge companies have been prepared to lay off thousands of staff despite boasting record profits. …
4. [R]egulation has been changed to favor the few on Wall Street rather than the many on Main Street. …
5. [E]ncouraging ordinary Americans to borrow against the value of their homes, businesses created the conditions that led to the financial crisis, and with it to homelessness and unemployment. …
6. Moore interviews priests who believe that capitalism is anti-Christian, because it fails to protect the poor and encourages greed.
And one final point of agreement:
Moore drives a truck up to some of the biggest banks in New York and, through a loud speaker, demands they give back the hundreds of billions of bailout dollars to the country.
Though entertaining, Moore’s films have never been at all persuasive. Whether it was the reelection of George W. Bush or a push for socialized medicine, Moore’s a gift from above for our side — who, like Oliver Stone, is so clownish and anti-intellectual he’s become a national punchline.

What a buffoon! Sure capitalism can have hard edges and perious fits (haven't we just went through one them?) and truly unbridled capitalism can inflict har. But the essence of the problem is that simply there is no alternative to capitalism (the Easter Europe countries have amply shown that the locals don't want a return to communism) and capitalism is a nice tiger to ride – the only debate regarding it is about the extent regulations should or shouldn't the fee enterprise.
As far as Moore, he's a gross opporetunist who's making a pretty cool buck for himself as Lenin or Ceaucescu denouncing capitalism's ills, and, when it comes to money, comrade Moore appears to have no interest for helping the oppressed in a direct way, from his large pockets (Obama's a creep as well) – all he cares about are the box-office receipts.

Complaining about Moore and his ilk accomplishes NOTHING. Here is the unpleasant truth: the left dominates the film industry, television, documentary production, and the arts in general for one simple reason: leftists have been willing to devote their time, their money, and their careers toward filmmaking and other arts.
Our side refuses to do likewise.
What's stopping the production of documentaries (and films in general) that support our side? The government? No. It's two things: money and dedication. Conservatives refuse to devote either. They choose to send their time on their corporate career, growing a business, golfing, or watching basketball on cable. They choose to invest their money "wisely" so they can grow their portfolios and pass it on to their children. Film? Well, they give their "moral" support. And a hearty "best of luck to you!"
Bottom line: if you're a conservative with time and/or money (and everyone has at least one of those resources) and you want someone to blame for this state of affairs, you need only look into the nearest mirror.

This is going to be one of those movies where timing is everything — in the wrong direction.
I'm sure when Moore conceived his latest harangue 10-12 months ago, he thought the pot would still be boiling against the capitalist system and people would be more inclined to support his big government ideas with Obama president. Fast forward to September 2009, and Obama has thrown so many high-dollar big government plans at the public they're probably warier of Uncle Sugar than at anytime since the Hillarycare debacle of 1994.
My guess is with the health care battle in trouble, all but the most partisan far left Democrats are going to want to stuff Michael in a closet (or, if that's too small, a warehouse) and keep him out of sight less his blather make people even more wary of Obama's programs.

The biggest problem I have with Mr. Moore's movies is that they are clearly made to appeal to the laziest and most ignorant viewers. He uses cherry picked facts while ignoring the larger more obvious and pertinent ones. Knowing his audience is too myopic to think things any further through than what he presents to them he can reshape any argument to persuade his audience to his view of things. I would love to do a "Mystery Science Theater 3000" type voiceover to his movies and just scream out the glaring ommissions of fact, but I'm sure I would quickly be escorted out of the theater.

All this crap is clouding the real essence of the debate. It's about FREEDOM. Freedom results in capitalism. That's why capitalism works so well, because it's engrained in human nature.
To ensure freedom, we have democracy – every one has a vote and is free to choose officials rather than have them chosen for us. It's not perfect because we also need courts to protect our rights (which they don't always do).
Get rid of capitalism and you get rid of freedom. And that's proved an exceptionally bad way of running countries in the last 100 years.

I like a lot of what you said misanthropicus but you are wrong that we recently went through the downside of capitalism, what we went through is government regulation causing a sector to fail and then bailing it out. Capitalism would never have rewarded those banks for their greed and stupidity and never encouraged their behavior with phony do-gooder legislation that helped cause the problem.
