HBO’s Potential New Star ‘Licked Doorknobs’ to Make Republicans Sick
by John NolteThe first reaction to a story like this is get wrapped ’round the axle of HBO’s hypocrisy, so let’s get that out of the way: Of course no Republican who had behaved in the same manner as ”sex columnist” Dan Savage would get a shot at an HBO show. But there’s really no hypocrisy when you realize that Bill Maher’s network is waging ideological war. Through that prism of clarity, the network’s desire to do business with and thrust Mr. Savage further into the American cultural/political landscape is perfectly consistent.
For those of you unfamiliar with Savage, here’s an excerpt from a Salon piece he wrote in 2000 titled “Stalking Gary Bauer.” The set-up was simple, Savage volunteered at Republican Gary Bauer’s presidential campaign headquarters and decided, “…if it’s terrorism Bauer wants, then it’s terrorism Bauer is going get[.]“:
Naked, feverish and higher than a kite on codeine aspirin, I called the Bauer campaign and volunteered. My plan? Get close enough to Bauer to give him the flu, which, if I am successful, will lay him flat just before the New Hampshire primary. …
I went from doorknob to doorknob. They were filthy, no doubt, but there wasn’t time to find a rag to spit on. My immune system wasn’t all it should be — I was in the grip of the worst flu I had ever had — but I was on a mission. If for some reason I didn’t manage to get a pen from my mouth to Gary’s hands, I wanted to seed his office with germs, get as many of his people sick as I could, and hopefully one of them would infect the candidate.
So, much as it pains me to confirm a hateful stereotype of gay men — we will put anything in our mouths — I started licking doorknobs. The front door, office doors, even a bathroom door. When that was done, I started in on the staplers, phones and computer keyboards. Then I stood in the kitchen and licked the rims of all the clean coffee cups drying in the rack.
Acting out his burning hostility in such an inappropriate manner wasn’t a one shot deal, either. As recently as 2006, Savage declared in a videotaped interview that Green Party candidate Carl Romanelli should:
“…be dragged behind a pickup truck until there’s nothing left but the rope.”
Not only does the aptly named Savage take political discourse well beyond the pale, his noxious and dangerous behavior (what if Savage had given a vulnerable child or elderly person the flu?) appears to be what he’s most famous for — unless you count his syndicated sex column “Savage Love,” where Savage’s infamous attacks on Senator Rick Santorum and Pastor Rick Warren are too grotesque to detail here.
For those of you still not convinced, here’s the 2007 transcript from a radio interview Savage did where he joked about “hate-f__king” Pastor Fred Phelps:
INTERVIEWER: You’re stuck in a desert island with Dennis Hastert, Rush Limbaugh and Fred Phelps. You’ll be freed if you f–k one of them. Who are you going to do and why are they the best choice?
SAVAGE: Good God. Must I answer this question? I guess… uh… Fred Phelps, because he’s the most revolting of the three –way out in front of Hastert, and edging Limbaugh by a hair.
Why Fred? Well, I figure I might have an easier time working up a hate-f–k boner for Phelps than the other two. Plus he’s the skinniest and I likes ‘em skinny. But, man, just thinking about it makes me worry that I’ll never get a boner again. Out, out, damn mental image!
Savage’s beyond-the-pale political high-jinks have largely flown under the radar thanks to the indifference of the same mainstream media currently obsessing over average American citizens speaking up in town hall meetings. Thankfully for Savage, an openly gay Leftist, he’s the member of a protected class, which means he’ll never be held accountable for his behavior — on the contrary. True to form, HBO appears ready to reward him with a spot on their influential network.

Dan Savage is depraved. Period. If you have ever read his column then you have had a glimpse into Sodom and Gomorrah prior to their destruction. Seriously, this guy would make even many on the left vomit in disgust. That HBO would give this sicko a show shows another level of decent into the black abyss by that network. Anyone that subscribes to that network needs to really examine if that is a useful way to spend their money.

Despite periodically having great television series such as Band of Brothers and The Soprano's, Me thinks it's time, particularly in a recession, to keep the cash in my pocket and try and let this network follow NBC into the ratings toilet. I believe, on balance, the world would be a better place without HBO.

The writer is exactly right, it could have easily been an elderly person or a child or maybe a person with a vulnerable immune system. Did the silly queen even think of that?

I love Dan Savage and his column. His language is at times over-the-top, but he's not a pundit – he's a sex advice columnist. That doorknob-licking incident was hyperbole designed to get attention and express his dismay at the over-the-top anti-gay statements coming from certain political leaders. As he explained in his book "Skipping Towards Gomorrah," he didn't actually lick any doorknobs. He was just angry. Did you know that when the Iraq war started, he made himself the most-hated man in Seattle by coming out IN FAVOR of the invasion? His books are thoughtful and funny (though definitely explicit and adult-oriented), and his column and podcast have helped thousands of people work out relationship problems that would have otherwise broken them up. Yes, he's a "lefty" but that's pretty much by default, since there's no place on the right for sex-positive, openly gay, married (in Canada) in a longtime committed relationship loudmouths like Dan Savage.
…and Iowa never charged him with vote fraud in 2000, even though he registered to vote using the address of a hotel and cast a vote in the caucus. Disgusting.

To be fair, the Reverend Fred Phelps is an azzhat of the first order. Phelps is the Kansas minister who travels around the country protesting at the funerals of US military servicemen, claiming that every combat death is God's punishment on this nation for tolerating homosexuality.
I detest Phelps just about as much as Dan Savage does (minus the hate-sodomizing). I guess that proves once again that even a broken clock like Dan Savage is right twice a day.

wrong if someone wants to live a homosexual lifestyle, that is certainly their choice and right. Many people won't like it, but many people don't like a lot of things.
Many of us have no problem with a domestic union of some sort. but you can't just redefine a word like marriage to have it mean what you want.
The religious and the legal unions are different, they just happen to be carried out by the same person in many cases.
Here's what I don't get. HBO used to do a pretty good job with original programming over the 30+ years I've been a subsciber. But over the last several years it's really been crap. Now adding this lame assed show is another nail. My problem is that my cable system bundles HBO w/ Cinemax and Showtime HD. If I cancel one, I'll pay more for the others. It's clear, the monopoly of the cable systems are still pretty much out of control, and no one wants to address it, but it's all turned into a pretty paltry fare.
As to this silly savage, he should join forces with Hilton and Maher. A trifecta of dunces.

Phelps is definitely a hypocrite. He hates the homosexuality, but not those who practice it. That's why the Bible lists homosexuality as a sin because he doesn't want people to suffer the negatives consequences. It's no different than how parents will prevent a child from touching a hot stove because it will hurt them.
In short, God saying "No!" to something (homosexuality, the lottery, alcoholism, assisted suicide, etc.) is for our protection and an expression of His genuine love.

One day I was bumming because HBO had no Sopranos, had canceled Deadwood and Carnivale and their boxing had been a series of set-up fights for way too long. I checked the HBO guide on my satellite and the first thing that showed was Bill Maher.

Bottom line: no gay couple is free to enter into a non-sham marriage (the "a gay man can marry any woman they want, therefore it's not discrimination" lying point is exactly the same as to the anti-interracial marriage arguments).

The post generated several feelings with anger and revulsion leading the pack. However, after those emotions calmed down, I was simply left with a sense of sadness. Sadness for a young man so consumed with hate for others and for himself. Sadness for a cable network that would use such a man and endeavor to create more just like him. And sadness, for a pop culture that barely raises an eyebrown about it.

I've been contemplating canceling my HBO for many reasons. This just did it for me. The only show I'll miss is The First Ladies Detective Agency. True Blood lost my interest as soon as they started trashing Christians and trying to equate dead, blood sucking vampires wanting equal rights to the current gay population wanting equal rights. I remember back when HBO basically only did movies and comedy specials, and that was it.
On a side note, I love how much vitriol the left spew about hating republicans and christians, and they never get reprimanded for it by anybody. We do it though, and you'd think we just ok'd baby-eating. And their excuse? "Well, our situation is different" – that's what they always say. Compare the response to EVERYTHING Bush did (and Palin) to everyone's response to Obama, and they'll say that what we're doing is wrong and racist, while what they did to Bush was fine because "that's different", followed by some vague reference to either Iraq or the recession. For some reason our circumstances just aren't good enough, however for them, it's always okay and encouraged.
And I wouldn't worry about Savage – there's a very warm seat in Hell reserved for people like him, that's for sure.

If you're paying thousands of dollars for legal documents, you deserve it. You can find legally binding documents – power of attorney, a living will, etc. – for as little as $10 to $20 a pop, if you shop around hard enough.

Regarding Phelps, he's also the man who led the protests at Gordon B. Hinckley's funeral. I'm sorry, but whether you agree with his religious views or not, Gordon B. Hinckley was one of the kindest, gentlest, most truly tolerant people that have ever lived. He never had an unkind word for anybody, unless he was being self-deprecating. Of all the people in the world to protest, why would you pick somebody like that?
And then they follow it right up by saying that the reason we should be killed is because we're so hateful and intolerant. The hypocrisy is staggering, and yet none of them can see it.
Why doesn't this "confession" qualify as grounds for an assault charge? Doesn't willfully attempting to transmit a harmful and potentially debilitating or even fatal bug to another person qualify as a crime?

But when you compare the show, which is as skeezy as a doorknob licked by Savage, to the wonderful novels, it's very sad. I had to give up after three painful episodes. To faithful viewers: does it get better after a while?

I remember that incident very well. My dad was working on the Bauer campaign. (Maybe he says now he didn't lick any doorknobs, but who knows? He was either lying about doing it or lying about not doing it, so how are we to know which time he was lying?)

I am quite certain that if it became known that a right-winger had infiltrated the Obaman campaign, just to use an example, and had attempted to infect the candidate and his staff with some disease, and what is more the infiltrator had admitted his misdeed, the reaction would have been the same.
