Hollywood to America: Trickle-Down Economics Works Only For Us
by John NolteOther than a self-made governor who chose not to abort her unborn Down syndrome child, nothing gets the Hollywood Left more outraged than what they call, “tax cuts for the rich,” or “corporate welfare.” For nearly thirty-years now, studio chiefs, millionaire actors and millionaire directors have created and distributed movies and television shows laced with propaganda opposing “trickle-down economics.” Most of us have also been subjected to Reaganomics’ bashing in popular music and novels, as well.

And yet… [emphasis added]
The California Film Commission on Monday announced that 25 productions had been awarded tax credits, which refund 20% or 25% of all spending in the state on so-called below-the-line employees, Hollywood parlance for behind-the-scenes crew. …
The state is awarding $67.5 million in tax credits for the 25 productions. Amy Lemisch, director of the CFC, said those movies and TV shows will spend $347 million on below-the-line employees. Lemisch said she was confident the vast majority of that money would otherwise not have been spent in California.
Productions using the credits include CBS Films, DreamWorks, Sony, Comedy Central, and Disney.
Whether you want to stay competitive in California or America, tax cuts work, tax cuts create jobs, tax cuts trickle down … and Alec Baldwin, Sean Penn, Robert Redford, Matt Damon and Barbra Streisand all know this. Which is why there’s no celebrity-outrage decrying this $67.5 million tax cut as “corporate welfare” for “the top 1%” — and if you don’t think “Big Studio” isn’t just as fat as any oil, drug or tobacco company…
And “Big Studio” chases these tax cuts for their rich selves all over the country with nary a peep from Hollywood Leftists about how this money could be better spent on the homeless or condom machines in elementary schools.
Hollywood demands Reaganomics. Why? Because they know it works. For the rest of us, they want higher taxes, more regulation and an increase in government intervention. Why? Because they see themselves as individual Hugo Chavezs over-seeing “the great unwashed” as government strips us of our liberties.
We’re in an ideological war and appearing as hypocrites when it comes to taxes is a small price to pay if it moves the ball towards a government that saves trees and kills babies, legalizes drugs but outlaws tobacco and trans-fat, and rescues death-row inmates with one hand while unplugging the elderly with the other.
Yesterday morning, on one of the news shows, some lefty Congressman was pimping a bill to end advertising tax deductions for “Big Pharma.” Specifically those commercials that end with a litany of warnings designed to make trial lawyers drool. Think about this: While drug companies perform near-miracles improving quality of life here and around the world, they’re singled out for a historic Congressional attack disallowing advertising as a business expense. But on the same day, an industry that sexualizes our children and undermines an America at war is singled out for a big, fat, sweet tax break.
Hey, it’s good someone got a Reagan-like tax cut in this economy. More power to all the below-the-line folks who will be employed thanks to the trickle down from fat cats like Spielberg. The problem is that those same Spielbergs don’t give a damn about any “below-the-line” folks who work in industries that don’t produce their propaganda.

Most excellent, Mr. Nolte.
It's all elitism. Pure and simple. They're better than us – we're less than they are. What is good for them isn't good for us because we don't deserve it. We're not as good as the elites.
I've been saying this for sometime now! They bitch about tax-breaks for the rich but then flock to Utah, New Mexico or Connecticut because why?…. They save money from tax breaks for shooting there!!!! Pure definition of hypocrisy.
The biggest lie propagated by the left is that Ronald Reagan's tax code favored the wealthy. In 1989 I was a young accountant working for a CPA firm that used to be a Big 8 Office in a wealthy community. I had the opportunity to do tax returns for individuals with six figure tax liabilities. individuals who lived off their assets owed no liability before 1986 due to passive loss rules. The 1988 liabilities were six figures since this loophole was closed in the 1986 tax act.
Reagan removed 90% of these loopholes including the capital gains exclusion in his Term. His philosophy was simple only charge a 28% upper marginal rate but ensure that individuals were taxed on all their income. The trust fund wealthy we served hated it because for the first time in their lives they could not benefit from tax losses.
This is why the economy rebounded. When the wealthy invested money they had to find something that would generate a profit and not a tax loss. Today the simple wonderful bueaty of the Reagan Tax code has been lost by Conservatives as well as democrats. Lower the taxes and eliminate the loopholes. It is what Reagan did and it worked.
Unfortunately, conservatives live in a universe that respects the laws of both physics and reason. Liberals live in the universe of immediate gratification, and the end-justifies-the means. They will easily dismiss the proven fact that tax cuts work overall, because they always gaze at their navels but not their less attractive body parts, if you know what I mean.

Spielberg, you say?
"Does Steven Spielberg hold the same values I wish upon myself? Does the mind of this grinning, bespectaled, baseball-capped man entirely reflect this culture?
Is it true that in his waning years, Orson Welles asked Steven Spielberg for a small amount of money with which he could make a final film? Is it true Steven Spielberg refused? Is it true that Steven Spielberg bought a sled used in Citizen Kane for an extremely large sum of money?
Do Steven Spielberg’s passions burn? Do passions burn in the man now imprisoned who wished to anally rape Steven Spielberg? Do our cultural mouthpieces confidently inform us that the wish to anally rape Steven Spielberg is a bad thought? Could anal rape of Steven Spielberg be simply the manifestation of a cultural mandate?" -Crispin Hellion Glover, "What Is It?", Apocalypse Culture II
Great article and commentary, Mr Nolte. I'm glad there are still enough Americans who can see Hollywood for what they are: second rate peddlers of sex porn, torture porn and Leftist political propaganda.
Good Article Mr. John you just confirm what most of us already know that the Hollywood Lefty Swine's are Smoothie Hypocrite's. Their Mantra should be "Not Only Is It All About What's Good For Me"… But… " It's ALWAYS All About What's Good For Me." Come to think about it…. I think it is.
Individualist, I'd argue that fiscal conservatives have NEVER forgotten the Reagan Tax Codes…. Now, you could say "Republicans and democrats' have been lost… but not conservatives.
You hit the right line in the same paragraph though.. wealthy had to "generate profits",… and as they say, a rising tide lifted _ALL_ the boats..
Excellent post, John Nolte. Very well stated. This ought to be on tomorrow's LA Times Op-Ed page.
I picked out this same hypocrisy when I went to the WGA march in Hollywood and Patric Verrone was talking about how Hollywood production was important because we took the money we make and spend it on local businesses and they hire new workers. As one of the only Conservatives there I laughed and said…trickle down economics.
That's because Hollywood movie types aren't "evil corprashuns". They're "artistes", creative types who "mean well." Their Leftist slogans, tropes, and platitudes apply to the OTHER guy, not them.
Thanks for the info, Mr. Nolte.
Do as we say, not as we do, huh?
Boy, hypocrisy is so much fun. And when it comes from a bunch of self-righteous, holier-than-thou, elitist scum suckers…whoo hoo, bonus!
DO NOT, give your money, to people who laugh at you and then take it and use it against you.
Thank you. Excellent article. There are two basic philosophies or paradigms in this country at odds..true American conservatism founded in traditional capitalistic founding father economic and political philosophy versus postmodern european statist liberal socialist tripe founded on Marxism and sixties new left politics and economic propaganda. The two party system is a fraud and a distraction..the above is the real conflict and stuggle. The sooner you realize this the more sense you will be able to make of things as they unfold. This conflict has been going on for along time. Decide where you stand and act accordingly.
Ummmm, I am.
Well, just fine, then. But, those relocatees better have left their hope & change ideologies by the curb in California, because we don't want them f^@%(ng up Texas. Note to self: re-electing Rick "Good Hair" Perry might be prudent.
I think the only "trickle down" effect I'd like to see with Hollywood and its elites is something akin to waterboarding.
Uh, yeah, bizarreness like this is why Crispin Glover has had about 4 acting roles since 1985.
Good article, agreed. This tax credit system is why film has been driven out of California and into places like Louisiana (which offers something crazy like 40% back).
I posted this on another thread but this seems repeating here. My idea is for new taxes. The taxes would be on all movie tickets sold, movies rented and any DVDs purchased. The other tax would be on any production filmed outside of the U.S. The new taxes would come with the provision that all revenue raised from these taxes can only be spent on the national healthcare system. After all liberals keep telling us that it's only fair that the rich take up the burden and I'm sure Hollywood will gladly accept their new burden with all the style and grace it's known for.
It seems the liberals are going to use the French medical program as a prototype "if" they aren't successful in cramming the current attempt at government controlled healthcare down the throats of Americans! Here's what Earl Littlefield, retired U.S. Marine Corps Officer and Police Officer has to say about this ploy…
Even Hitler and his henchmen could find people to write flowery articles and paint pretty pictures of their "One Superior Race" program and other projects that led the people down the path to dictatorship. If 90% of the people have additional private coverage, it is certain that the governmental coverage is inadequate. This is merely a smoke screen like those used to "raise a reasonable doubt" in most criminal court trials. They used the Canadian system as bait and when that failed, they used the Brittish system. That failed and now it is the French system. If necessary, Russia, Egypt and Nigeria will be used. Any smoke screen will do.
Earl
I took this last election cycle as a screaming neon sign from the Palin Hating Hollywood Obamabots that the last thing they really wanted was for us average folk to watch their TV shows, go to their movies or purchase anything they are selling. Consider it done Hollywood!
Excellent article. This needs to be sent to every liberal star out there. I'll be posting this all over the place. Thanks for your work.
Another pure, tasty hunk of red meat, sliced up exactly how we've come to expect it from John. I can almost hear the echoes of a moo…
Yep. 28% down from a startling 70% tax rate! That coupled with the Reagan Axe lifted us out of the Carter Quagmire. And just like all the those that follow Democrats, he was forced to pile on the cash for the long and harshly neglected defense. You know, the ones we love and respect so much.
That reminds me. Back then there was an oil windfall tax just like dem's wanted to enact last year. I do not recall the rate. But it was on domestic oil production – not foreign! You can imagine what that did to our domestic oil producers and what it did to our country. It made us completely dependent on foreign oil. Reagan repealed that bit of nonsense.
Targeted meaningful changes done over the course of two terms brought us prosperity. I long for targeted and meaningful. I long for common sense. Not sure I see that in either party at this moment. Maybe republicans will become Republicans again… get a spine, reacquaint themselves with their core values. A girl can dream.
Mark_S – I appreciate your comments – Point taken
It got started after HW Bush broke the taxes pledge. The financial pundits on the local radio shows started the discussion with capital gains tax breaks. We started raising rates and finding loopholes. Then Clinton got in raised it up to 39 so that when W took over somehow 36 was low. Every time you talked about it we'd start hearing how the rich were getting the tax breaks. It was unfair, blah blah blah….
I do not know how it happened or who was responsible I just know the message got lost somehow. Reagan was the true egalitarian. No one has yet to live up to him. We cannot allow the mesage to get lost.

"Tax cuts for the rich."
Gotta love that one.
First, they demand a "progressive" tax code where the lower end pays no taxes and the higher end pays the majority of the taxes. Then, when you try to cut the taxes, they complain that the rich are the biggest beneficiaries of the tax cuts.
Well, duh!
Fabulous article. I have always wondered why Americans are willing to vilify the corporate executives of big Pharma, or Big Oil, yet have nothing to say about the money earned by movies stars, musicians, or elite athletes. Surely, what some exec at Pfizer or Exxon is doing is more important than say, Britney undressing in her latest video?
Agreed.
Ken's got a good point.
The other thing I'd add is that even union workers know that poor people don't hire anybody. Its the hated rich that actually put people to work.

Great article. The leftists, however, will not see this as Trickle Down, rather Spreading-The-Wealth where the studios select who and where they will spend the money.
Great article, John.
Thanks.
The D.C. liberals will always use hard-earned taxpayer dollars to take care of their own…and the Hollywierd libturds have to thank their messiah, Pres. Opompous, for including them in his "stimulus bill". The lesson…stop spending your conservative cash on libturd entertainment or any libturd enterprises.

In 79 the windfall profits tax was a 90% excise tax on sales of a barrel of oil greater than $18. Oil was selling well above that and the tax was not deductible. So that meant the tax was actually 123% with the 33% corporate income tax rate.
Oil companies quit refining gas because they could not make a profit. That is why you had gas lines and an oil crisis. Funny thng was that Polyester made the fashion world, plastic furniture was in, nagahide coaches (all made of petroeum products and Phillips 66 was putting out PSA;s telling everyone what great products they could get made form petroleum. The rate was reduced to 20% a year after Reagan was in and not phased out until 1986.
Excellent column.
My question is, when is someone going to confront them on camera with this? The next time some Hollywood tool starts spouting off their leftist drivel, I'd love to see someone beat them about the head and neck with this.
Especially when you consider that Sylvester Stallone got something like $20 million for Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot…..
Pure larceny….
