Filmmaker Spike Lee championed a free press Friday during a visit to Venezuela, where broadcasters are under pressure to avoid criticizing President Hugo Chavez’s leftist government.
The director didn’t directly refer to the dispute in Venezuela, but he said there are “no circumstances” under which news media should be silenced.
Lee’s never had a problem “directly referring” to America or Bush, so why do Venezuela and Hugo Chavez rate a pass?
- Lee just can’t bring himself to criticize a fellow Leftist?
- Because he was in Venezuela, Lee was afraid he might need a food taster if he criticized Uncle Hugo?
- Because he has dinner with Sean Penn and Danny Glover, Lee was afraid he might need a food taster if he criticized Uncle Hugo?
- Lee is a gracious and mature individual who would never insult his host country?
Other than knowing it’s not “D,” I have no idea.
Though shy about “directly referring” to Chavez, Lee walks the path blazed by many of his celebrity counterparts and is more than happy to criticize America on foreign soil. Speaking of American race relations:
[T]here is still a way to go, he added, citing shootings by New York City police officers involving blacks, including the May death of a black undercover cop killed by a white officer.
Lee said he has struggled in his own career as a black film producer, director and actor, but added he is grateful that from an early age his parents impressed on him the need to face challenges.
“It was drummed into my brain that in order to be successful in America you had to be ten times better than white folks,” he said.
Just imagine how much better the world (and movies) would be if Leftists were as critical of fascists and terrorists as they are of America and conservatives.
As far as being “ten times better than white folks,” Lee’s made a couple of great films (“Do the Right Thing” and “Malcolm X”) and a handful of good ones, but nothing ten times better than his white contemporaries — nothing even “twice better.” But if by “ten times better” he means as a human being, that’s an even bigger joke.

Big flippin' surprise.
Spike Lee and the 60s radicals just can't let go of the past. They have defined themselves by the conditions that existed in the 60s and before, not recognizing how much things have changed. Is there still racism? Of course. Is it endemic the way it was back then? Not even close. But large-scale racism is a remnant of the past, and the only thing that keeps stirring it up is the desperate need for 60s radicals to perpetuate victimhood into the 21st century.
You can almost feel sorry for the guy at this point as this is, quite literally, the only way he can stay even remotely relevant (in the sense that ho one will pay him any attention unless he says witless, stupid, things).

The new narrative seems increasingly to be that if you are a minority, you aren't equal, you are better than white people, and white men in particular. Wow, it's just so hard to keep up. As for Lee's politics, I simply cannot take him seriously when he speaks – there is nothing new flowing from his mouth. As for his movies, early on he had a unique voice (like many good filmmakers) but it seems he became conscious of himself and his legend/image – whatevs – and became increasingly heavy handed to the point of being distracting. He doesn't realize that the reductionist view of human behavior and racism being pedaled today just doesn't match up well to the world – the entire sociological pedagogy of it is in fact based on hooey. Believing in it skews ones view of world off-kilter and it shows in his later work. If only he kept to being a great filmmaker and artist, maybe he would still be one.

Do the right thing Spike, shut your mouth and become keenly aware that if you were a Venezuelan your free speech rights are about 10% of what they are here.

This recent flap created by Gates and inflamed even further by Obama, and now Lee trying to show the world the horribleness of America brought to mind a politically incorrect joke that might explain some of the lib mindset.
After several days of taunting by a black boy whose family had just integrated an all-white neighborhood of a white boy the same age about how blacks were just as good as whites, the tune changed one day to 'the black family being better than the white family'. The problem regarding Lee was going to Venezuela in the first place to be a prop for a dictator. However, there's nothing wrong with him saying that the press should be free however he said it. There was probably nothing advantageous about using Chavez' name. Actually, if you read the quote more carefully, he doesn't say "work 10 times harder", he says, "be 10 times better". Not the same thing.

What's the deal with controversial filmmakers wearing sports gear (like Lee's New York Yankees hat and Michael Moore's Detroit Tiger's hat)? To me, it doesn't represent support for their favorite team or even a fashion statement. It represents how fearful they are of criticism by flashing the colors and logos of a known, respected group. It's as if they cannot stand alone in the spotlight without clinging to something familiar, something that won't abandon them. It's a grown man's socially acceptable equivalent of their mother or their teddy bear. There's always that sense of security by belonging to such a group. That's why it's so humorous when some consider them to be courageous. But are these claims describing courageous people or just controversial acts? The evidence of their fear has been seen before in their radical outbursts of rage or childish taunts when they're challenged in the public eye.
Maybe I'm wrong about this, but that's up to those like Lee and Moore to prove. For Lee and Moore, that ship has sailed. We already know what kind of pansies they are.
