I think Dumbledore's alleged homosexuality was an afterthought, but I agree with your comment that J.K.R. was trying political theater. Here again, a fictional character who is admired by all is shown to be "normal" and "heroic," while queer. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way in real life. Show me one homosexual who isn't suffering from psychological angst or is an angry activist (Ellen and Rosie, for instance) and I'll change my mind. In general, I admire the world and characters that Ms. Rowling has created, but I think she missed the mark with outing Dubledore.

You know, it probably was "kowaii."

Oh, if you want to be scary to Japanese people (in Japan, that is), wear sunglasses and get/show off tattoos. Oh, and being large and black doesn't hurt (<a href="http://www.gaijinsmash.net)." target="_blank">http://www.gaijinsmash.net).</a>

"Could someone who previously liked the Dumbledore character, but was of the opinion that homosexuality was wrong, still like and respect Dumbledore?"

I see no reason why not. The Catholic Church, for example, has always tried to make it crystal clear that its problem is with homosexual <i>sex,</i> not with homosexual <i>people.</i> Dumbledore's sexual preference would not be important at all----only his behavior, which the author never discussed.

I'm a die-hard Harry Potter fan. I think Rowling has created a magical world (pun intended). Her characters are alive and real, her interesting play on words compelling (like the pensieve -- the basin into which Dumbledore poured memories and Harry submerged in order the "relive" someone else's memories). That said, the movie was awful, probably one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The script was abysmal, the filming herky-jerky, the storyline nonexistent. Right out of the gate, I lost suspension of disbelief. The scene where Dumbledore and Harry meet Prof. Slaghorn. They set up the messy house, say it's a Muggles house, and then show Slaghorn's photographs displayed as if he lived there. Stupid mistake. No professional writer/film maker should ever make that mistake. It smacks of amateurism.

I have liked the other Harry Potter movies but I considered walking out half way through this one. The problem is casting (not the fault of the film makers, however.) Whereas Watson, Grint and Radcliffe were excellent child actors and played their parts very, very well; they're busts as emerging adults. They have no chemistry with each other and Radcliffe has turned into a black hole in cinema, sucking all the life out of any scene he's in. Alan Rickman, as always, commands the screen as does Bonham-Carter, Smith and Broadbent. But the kids stink save for Draco (whom the camera likes and the boy who played Tom Riddle). But Radcliffe, Watson and Grint - AWFUL. There was no way of knowing this years ago when they were cast in their roles and now they have them, they can't be fired. To counteract their lack of screen magic and charisma, the film requires a marvelous screenplay, inventive direction, excellent special effects and cohesion. It had none of those and went down like cement in jello.
