Critics: Sacha Baron Cohen’s a ‘Genius’ Only When He Ridicules ‘Those’ People
by John NolteOh, big city critics loved them some “Borat,” which spent 95% if its screen time manipulating, editing and boiling down average, working class, not-bothering-anyone Americans (and Romanian peasants) into the worst possible caricature imaginable. How they laughed and found genius and insight into the machinated savaging of everyday folks just minding their own business. But listen to some of them squeal and squawk now that the satire is turned on someone other than us. Here’s a sampling:
Imagine if a white comedian went into the Deep South, disguised in a very convincing blackface and started acting like Stepin Fetchit.
Consequently, the character’s gayness reads false. Baron Cohen needs to spend more time in certain gay bars if he wants to learn how to do “flamboyant” and “fabulous.” It’s a ghost of the real thing.
You can’t honestly defend your principled lampooning of homophobia when nine out of every ten images that you project onscreen comply with the most threadbare cartoons of gay behavior.
Not to get all PC on you, but the straight, outrageously dressed Baron Cohen camps it up in what has legitimately been criticized as swishy gay equivalent of blackface.
So here’s the lesson: Preying on unsuspecting everyday people, misleading them, manipulating them, pushing them until you get the reaction you desire and then editing them into something even worse, is a-okay. But… An obvious, over-the-top satire of gay men crosses the line.
As I said in my review, the only thing that mitigates the mean-spiritedness of “Bruno” is that, unlike “Borat,” everyone’s taking satiric fire. But now that the guffaws aren’t so one-sided, some aren’t guffawing so much. Worse, someone who isn’t gay lampooning flamboyantly gay men finds himself tarnished as a kind of “blackface” comedian. How interesting, when…
Everyday — on the big screen and small — we see Christians, Southerners, Republicans, Pro-lifers, Red Staters and the working class, ridiculed and savaged by actors who are none of those things. Where’s the cry of “blackface” then?
Baron Cohen is obviously a very talented actor, but there was nothing “brave,” “illuminating” or “ballsy” about “Borat.” Trashing the “great unwashed” is what’s known as a resume enhancer in Hollywood and Manhattan — about as “ballsy” as bringing beer to a frat party. ”Bruno,” on the other hand, actually is somewhat brave for risking charges of “insensitivity” (and worse) from the usual suspects.
Maybe this is just the beginning for Baron Cohen, maybe he’s working his way towards something truly “fresh” and “brave” … something where he sends a Christian into a GLAAD meeting, a cowboy into a La Raza gathering… We’ll see what happens to a parked car with a “NObama” sticker at NYU or MSNBC, or to a screenwriter pitching a pro-Bush script at a Hollywood studio… Better yet, a Berkeley student with a Palin t-shirt, or a white South African running for elected office in a Democrat primary as an “African-American.”
Now that truly would be an ”illuminating” look at American prejudices, and one that required much less editing than “Borat” to make its subjects look bad. But maybe that’s just my prejudice talking.

That would be awesome!
Ubuntu for Senator!
What's more fun John… actually compare the reviews between the two between what you posted above and their Rotten Tomatoes quip comments. (some of the original articles aren't there anymore obviously, due to time constraints)
Hollywood Explorer; For once it's true: Borat has to be seen to be believed. (the original review is no longer available)
NYer: [Borat] is equipped, like an F-15 Eagle, to engage multiple targets at once.
NY Post: This is the finest and most thoughtful comedy released so far this century.
SF Chronicle (this my FAVORITE 180-degree tun though): It's so inventive, so rich with comic moments, so outrageous, so shocking and unexpected, and so willing to be offensive that it consistently leaves viewers off balance — and howling. This is a film by an original and significant comic intelligence. :

And 'Will and Grace" was different how?
If I had a dollar for every piece of trash written that originated in NY and San Francisco…well, I wouldn't have any because The Messiah would've taken it all because I made too much and it was unfair. Never mind.
The above picture of Bruno and Gayby is priceless. Love the matching leather ensembles. Tres chic.
there is nothing better, more delightful, more delicious even than when the Left starts eating it's own… and that is what's happening here. Cohen is an opportunist, and he'll exit this unscathed. But the PC straights vs the Urban gays- now THAT's something that will be interesting to watch.
If you go see it and you're straight, are you a homophobe? If you're gay are you a traitor to your cause?
Or, if like us you have absolutely NO interest in this are you both? Or neither?
Inquiring minds, you know…
Let me get this "strait", Bruno isn't "GAY" enough for the Hollywood Reporter? Well, Alllllrighty then…..
Now that's funny, right there!
It's only okay to tell jokes about gay people if you're gay yourself — as I understand a significant chunk of W&G's writing staff was. If you're not, your gay jokes have to be vetted by an actual gay person before you tell them.
The really un-PC part is that he named his kid O.J.
No, Sacha Baron Cohen isn't gay enough. Bruno himself is too gay. It's complicated.
We had peoeple on this site that complained that a straight actor shouldn't play a gay character.
So how is it that Rupret Everett, Neil Patrick Harris and others are celebrated for their ability to do the opposite? Hillary Swank played a transgendered character and some were mad about that. Sighted people can't play blind people. Some people won't be happy until every possible subgroup in America has thier own poster child.
Beautiful.
Liberals of all kind hate being made fun of – they are genetically incapable of taking any sleight. The more I've thought about it – far too much, I should add – the more I think the hatred of Palin began not because of her family or her looks, I think it started when she made a series of hysterical jabs at Obama during the RNC speech. References to those Styrofoam columns and authoring two memoirs but not one piece of legislation, I think those were body blows, and Libs would have none of it.
One of the ways national politicians curry favor with "average" people (whatever that means) is self-mockery; not clowning, but at least having enough self-awareness to know that most people realize you, as an uber-pol, take yourself far too seriously, so you make fun of yourself. Reagan, Bush 41, Clinton and Bush 43 were all good at this, to one degree or another.
Every joke Obama makes about himself has to do with his own perceived greatness, on the rare occasion he cracks a joke; one of the few moments HRC actually became a sympathetic character was his putdown of her during a primary debate – it was a dcik move, plain and simple. I don't care who the Conservative pol is, but someone should be in front of the cameras daily endlessly mocking the man – he cannot take it. That so early on in his term as POTUS he went after Rush Limbaugh, some say it was a calculated, Alinskian move – personally, I think he hates the fact that Rush so effortless makes fun of him.
Show me a Conservative politician who will withstand the fire for, on a daily basis, standing up and making fun of Obama's pretension, and I'll show you the next leader of the movement. Palin's perfect for it, but who knows if she wants it. Thaddeus McCotter, where are you? This is your time!
Exactly what I was thinking!
I plan on seeing it and will let you know. Obviously, as you have made note, the PC daggers are being drawn and the dinner bell rung as Sacha Baron Cohen stirs the pot. If the above reviews are any in-dick-ca-tion, this movie will have me on the floor. Hell, the picture of Bruno and O.J. alone, is enough to get me to pony up the 12 bucks to take the ride.
I predict this movie will make a boatload of dough with SBC laughing all the way to the bank.
As a gay man I was as disgusted by Borat as much as I now am by Bruno.
It's just not very funny or interesting or smart or kind or anything. It's just stupid.
A reality show about a real flamboyant gay would be brilliant, watching someone like a modern day Quentin Crisp living their day to day lives and seeing the reaction of others to him would be interesting. Bruno is a fake and that's all he is. It's a cheap laugh at the expense of, well, everyone but Cohen and his creepy fanbase.
===If you go see it and you're straight, are you a homophobe? ====
Like you said, there is nothing better, more delightful, more delicious than watching the liberal swine squeal and bray. I'll be buying this on DVD; I may even buy this DVD as a gift for friends and family. I hope that makes me an uberhomophobe.
you are a true believer, friend… what a great gag gift; stellar idea. We're stealing it…
Mugabe could be a starter. Whoops, he's not South African. But he is African-American.
And to deny him the the chance to run would be some sort of discrimination.
What if he joined the firefighter's union? Would that help?
Mugabe could be a starter. Whoops, he's not South African. But he is African-American.
And to deny him the the chance to run would be discrimination. Bound to offend someone.

Leftards not only have no humor, they have no spine. Man, what I wouldn't give for Carrie Prejean to go mano-a-mano with Perez Hilton. Actually, it would be really be mano-a-screaming queen, and it would last exactly all of the two seconds it would take to shove that divine little tiara up Hilton's dark end till the points came out his nose. Now THAT's my idea of humor!
The same way any jokes about white Christian males (WCMs) had to be vetted by someone from that group.
What? They couldn't find any WCMs? Didn't even know any?
Oh, well, do those jokes anyway. They're always sooo funny.
That's not un-PC, it's just silly. Who'd call their kid 'Orange Juice'?
i HATE liberals !
nuff said.
He's not "African-American", he is half African and half American; he's Halfrican-American
You're right – they are 'genetically incapable' – which is why when I saw this quip about the Messiah, I knew it had to be a conservative. Here it goes. Obama is the 'Chance Gardener' of Chicago. Of course, in interests of fairness, I should reveal that I also snort over hearing Michelle called the White House Wookie.
And of course a non- African-American can't play Othello.
What? Some old limey guy, Laurence Oliver did? In blackface?
Doesn't matter that he was great in the role. Olivier was a racist. Pure and simple.
Being an 'actor' has nothing to do with it.
"I don't care who the Conservative pol is, but someone should be in front of the cameras daily endlessly mocking the man [Obama]"

How about this for “fresh” and “brave” … showing people with disabilities. They are so invisible in our society they don't even register for ridicule unless you are the President of the United States.
Ever heard of Autism? 2/10,000 births in 1987 to about 10/10,000 births in 1994, a nearly five-fold increase. The U.S. Department of Education released the figure of 1 in 67 kids that were receiving services under the diagnosis of ASD for the year 2007. The 1 in 150 number that is constantly quoted is now almost 12 years old as it was released in approximately 2005 and studied eight year old kids. 1 in 67 . . . how bad does this have to get?
I want to see a GLAAD meeting deal with their school system cutting speech services for at risk urban youth, or a La Raza gathering take on separate but equal for their community special needs children whose schools are grouped by disability not ability or location… We’ll see what happens to a screenwriter pitching a disabled character who isn't savant but trying to live an independent life at a Hollywood studio… Better yet, an Ivy League student with a disability getting some of that Sotomayor Affirmative Action, or a child with Autism running on their school's track team not as a member of Special Olympics.
Mugabe would have to be a 'Honorary' Halfrican American. But it can be done. A little bit of birth certificate modification.
Remind you of someone?
O… O… O… it's on the tip of my tonsils.

I don't even half way know who this guy is. I never saw the Borat movie, and I'm sure I wouldn't bother to see this one. I didn't even realize it was the same guy until now.
Seems like the same kind of humor as "Dumb and Dumber", which just didn't make me laugh at all. Put me in a bad mood, actually.
OK
So if I am going to make jokes satiring gay people I should be respectful and realistic as to the actual lifestyle or else it is not funny. Hmmm….. do you find stereo instructions humorous.
Well Bruce I guess will just have to tell John Clease and Michael Palin they can't do this sketch anymore

Yeah, I've noticed that Greg seems to get more trolls on his contributions here than most of the other people on BH.
I accidentally stumbled onto Huffington Post recently and I wasn't actually aware of its existence before…kinda like crossing a river in the amazon and not knowing that there were piranha (albeit very stupid pirahna) in it. What a total piece of garbage site.

I'm Russian and several of my relatives live there and as you know West Hollywood has a large Russian community. I'm there several times a month for the past ten years or so and when I first moved to CA we lived on Sierra Bonita off of Santa Monica. I got to know several gays and one was a cross dresser and more flamboyant than Bruno. I'm sure you're probably aware of the atmosphere on Santa Monica blvd in Boys Town on Friday and Saturday nights; there are hundreds of Bruno's. My comment wasn't meant as a swipe just let's not pretend that there are not real Bruno's out there.
cont……….
………….And West Hollywood is pristine, I agree, which is why my elderly relatives live there and it's relatively safe. A former girlfriend used to go to WH gay bars with her girlfriends when i went out with the guys. I asked her once, why do you go there, why not a bar on Sunset? She said the gay guys wouldn't hit on her. It all made sense. One night she dragged me to one of these bars with her and her friends. She said she'd be all over me so none of the guys would even try approaching me. I reluctantly agreed. Let me tell you, Bruno would've been considered a prude there.
John, my last post disappeared so I'll keep it short: I agree. My comment wasn't meant as a swipe, just pointing out there are real Bruno's out there.

Excellent point – that's why they have to be smart. And quasi-dirty. Only quasi, though.
Say something funny, outlandish and plausible to the Wa-Times. Drop a mini-bomb to Laura on her morning show, then to Shep, then to Greta, then – for Cons, the Holy Grail – on O'Reilly, a really condescending, hysterical, original, non-talking-points line, and they will come. My recommendation – hit Obama on his narcissism. Repeat it again and again – make five cracks to five different reporters about Americans tightening their belts while the First Lady carries a six-grand clutch, and at some point, a ripe target will be hit. Better yet – and many on here won't like this – ask why Mahlia was wearing a gigantic anti-nuke symbol out and about during the G8. Accuse them of being not Communists or Socialists, accuse them of behaving as Royals do. Ask random questions on live TV – when do we get to see the President's college transcripts? What does he consider his home state? Nothing nutty – no birth certificate questions, no church questions, no Ayers or Rezko questions, just the perfectly random questions that far too many of us have.
That'll get some attention. If you get a lower-level player on CNN or MSNBC to respond, fear not – the blood has been drawn. When that happens, and this is key: Go on CNN, go on MSNBC, go wherever you can, and continue to mock and ridicule with every ounce of breath.
From all the corners of the country, they will descend like locusts, and when they arrive, do not apologize, do not backtrack. Say something even more biting and more profound and say it with a siht-eating grin, and said potential leader will find reporters friending his teenage children on Facebook while filing FOIA requests at the nearest courthouse. For said leader to do this, tie up all loose ends – pay off the mistress, or better yet not have one; ensure your taxes are paid and the help is legal; the drug use will come first, admit it up front, but don't apologize for it, just blame it on youth, as we all do; if the spouse has a problem, gird her loins. Cause enough unpredictable trouble to be named Worst Person in the World – once that's accomplished, said leader is in.
To answer your question – this is how it can be done, if only one GOPer would do it. Easier said than done, of course.
Patrick Stewart played Othello in an otherwise all-black cast awhile ago. Apparently, the reviews were amazing, and nobody called him a racist for it.
I gotcha. Thought maybe you had only heard stories about the community, or something.
As far as the bars on Sunset, gay or straight, it's a freak show. No argument there.
Present critical company excepted of course, but don't we take it for granted now that critics of any stripe aren't really connected with public likes/dislikes/foibles? That they can rant away at their keyboards all they like, but it doesn't reflect what _real_ people, regardless of their persuasion actually think/feel/love/hate/get offended by? Bruno is poised to win the weekend across all persuasions, the rock em' sock em' robots are beloved despite a critical drubbing not seen in years, and, let's face it, a lot us love our Crocs. Just sayin'.
But that's different – that's reverse casting and provides more opportunities for black actors. Anyway, I saw that production and Patrick Stewart was very good.
A?s I said in the other Bruno discussion group, I was not too happy when Cohen did his little deal in B'ham Al at the dinner party, as one couple there is a good friend from college's parents. They were terribly embarassed by all the hoopla, being led to believe that the movie really wouldn't be seen by that many people, and would most likely fade out quickly. Not having any experience with that kind of thing, they believed. They still get strangers coming up to them and asking if they are the couple from the Borat movie. I think Cohen is talented, and probably will see Bruno. I don't really care if he offends a bunch of libs, I will give them the advice they all seem to want to give Sarah Palin: grow thicker skin and don't whine about it.
Dang, hold on here. Cohen gay but not enough….Bruno too gay….er…hmmm. Uh, we need a meat thermometer type device for Cohen to stick where it's usually dark. Too Straight..Straight..Bi..Gay..TOO DAMN GAY! I'm betting he pegs that baby to the high side! Actually his wife/fiance is a smoking hot Aussie babe…I guess they can share clothes.
This kind of thinking, if taken to absurd lengths, could blacken(?) if not wipe out a classic Hollywood genre.
The sight of white, possibly Christian, men wearing makeup to violently misrespresent a peaceful and noble race has no place in an enlightened society.
Stock up on your favorite old John Wayne Westerns, pard'ners, while they're still legal.

No doubt. Greg Gutfeld use to write for the Huffpo, and the reactions to his posts confirm this. I miss those days. The comments from the Hufftards were almost as funny as Greg's posts.
A cunning idea. Ignore the boiling oil pouring down from their parapets and carpet-bomb the liberal MSM until one of their edifices cracks and crumbles under the onslaught.
The Worst Person in the World (WPITW) title is surely there for anyone who can land such veritable flurry of knock-out punches and horribly mixed metaphors.
And be sure, other vessels in the once mighty MSM fleet will turn in the stream like sheep of a festering flock when they see, with their own one-eye, the astronomical ratings such a David and Goliath (and his band of Ugly Sisters) battle will pull.
Yes, ridicule, mockery, piddle-dee flocker-ee. We will have their innards for garters. The mighty MSM will gorge themselves on their own putrid flesh and lay bare the puny nature of air-brushed torsos.
A truly splendid idea, Borat, or Bruno, or whoever you are beneath that stupid wig. Now, who will be brave enough to throw the first, flaming stone!
No one? Ah, well, come back tomorrow.

For some reason, this article reminded me of Gary Oldman's portrayal of that over-the-top, evil Republican in that terrible movie, The Contender.
A lot of that was meddling from the producers. Oldman's a conservative himself, and he was reportedly upset about it.
Who gives a tinkers dam about what Hollyweird produces. They have run out of fresh good ideas and the stuff they produce isn't worth watching, or listening to. Only strange people seem to enjoy this sort of garbage.
or a white South African running for elected office in a Democrat primary as an “African-American.”
The ironies would just pile up. White South Africans ARE Africans. How many generations do you have to live in a land until you count as native?
You know, I don't know about you, but I'm in West Hollywood frequently and it's a beautiful little community, very well kept, filled with nice people who like to walk their dogs, have drinks on the stoop, eat at restaurants, and live quiet, dignified lives.
In fact, I'm more comfortable in West Hollywood than lunatic Leftie communities like Santa Monica and Westwood because that hostile, elitist, Hate-America vibe isn't everywhere.
I'd live in West Hollywood in a heartbeat if I could afford it and when the infrequent Bruno-type does show up, he actually does tend to stick out … quite a bit, in fact.
I quite enjoyed borat jerking the chain of those self-important sour puss feminists at the beginning.
Moreover who couldn't resist the deliciousness of Bruno correcting an angry talk show black woman for calling Africans African, not "African Americans," because Africans was "offensive."
A lot of the leftist praise is telling projection-and it's great to have it out in the open. Lighten up and laugh.
BTW I live in the Southern CA equivalent of San Francisco. And the stereotypes in this film are true almost 90% of the time. Except Bruno seems nicer and has better manners. If this gives the finger in any small way to the "LGBT community" that feels entitled to have the rest of us walking on eggshells for them, I'll dance a jig right here.
When did gay people lose their sense of humor? That's what I want to know. They started out all fun and gay and now walk around like they got a stick up their…oh wait…nevermind.
You sure that Oldman is a conservative? I tried to Google it and could come up with nothing solid.

sounds like "Roger & Me"- the first, last, and only one of Michael Moore's effluvia I'll ever waste my time on…
Can't say I disagree. I think the real message here is that Sacha Baron Cohen's shtick has run its course. Towards the end of the Borat hype, some people did wake up and smelled the coffee, and I think it's happening more so now. There has always been a smugness to his humor, but at least on Da Ali G Show, he didn't entirely go after soft targets like he does now.
I'm sure you all know about the LaToya Jackson scene that was cut out at the last minute after MJ died. I think that sums this all up. We're making a no-holds-barred satirical comedy where nobody is sacred…except for Jackson fans. At this point, Cohen's in it more for the money than the message.
http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/story?id=1146...
Maybe if the leftist crybabies had a little something called "a sense of humor", this wouldn't be an issue.
Well, a sense of humor that wasn't vile and based upon tearing down others.
I would have to say the left can say that this is President Bush's fault? The newspapers that John is quoting has blamed everything on the Republicans and the Bush administration….. I find it appaling that people still read those papers….I would only use them as a liner for my cat litter tray….
But the likes of the Hollywood Reporter and GLAAD had NO such problem with Queer Eye For the Straight Guy (talk about gayface), or Will and Grace (which had no gay characters that were played by out gays); just another bunch of whiners that can't laugh at themselves, it's that simple…
Actually, that's Terry Jones there with the original Palin, but point well taken…
Universal Studios proably has as much, if not more, to do with that…
Jackson fans need to be skewered and GOOD, ASAP!
if i recall my Shakespeare correctly, Othello isn't a black character. he's a Moor. they're of North African & Arab origin. it's no more correct (in terms of skin color) for Denzel Washington to play Othello than it is Patrick Stewart.
