Michael Moore: ‘Where are the Pitchforks and Torches?’
by John Nolte
–
From the USA Today:
The still untitled film, which opens Oct. 2, will zero in on the corporations and politicians he says caused the global financial crash.
Wall Street robber barons are Moore’s new on-screen enemy.
“The movie is not going to be an economics lesson; it’s going to be more like a vampire movie,” the filmmaker jokes. “Instead of the main characters feasting on the blood of their victims, they feast on the money. And they never seem to get enough of it.”
When the collapse walloped the country last September, Moore says he knew not only that it would matter to regular people, but also that the inherent decadence was ripe for his style of satire.
“If you go to see my movies, even if you don’t agree with everything in the movies, you’re going to have a good laugh,” Moore says. “I want them to walk out at the end saying ‘Wow, that was something!’ And in this case, maybe they also walk out asking the ushers, ‘Um, excuse me. Where are the pitchforks and torches?’”
Moore’s cinematic hey-day has hopefully passed. ”Sicko” made less than 25% of what “Fahrenheit 9/11″ cleared, and Moore’s last film, a love letter to himself, ended up being distributed on “Captain Mike’s” website … free of charge.
Admittedly, while I agree with nothing Moore stands for, that doesn’t mean he’s not a talented filmmaker. During the summer of 2007, the summer of the terrible threes: Spider-Man 3, Shrek 3, Oceans 3, Bourne 3, Pirates 3… “Sicko” was the rare entertaining bright spot.
As propaganda, however, “Sicko” failed and then some. If anything, the film’s lack of intellectual firepower and comically absurd portrayal of Cuba’s health care system probably set the socialized medicine cause back a few years.
As chance would have it, at the very moment Moore was summoning everything he had to convince me to back his cause, I was awaiting final test results regarding a spot on my lung. A big one. Combine my family history of cancer and my personal history of alarmism and you got yourself one sorry s.o.b. ready to renounce everything he’s ever stood for if it means just one more day of life. But even with the Grim Reaper sharing my tub of popcorn, Moore’s engaging but profoundly stupid propaganda piece only increased my gratitude for our wildly imperfect health care system.
The spot on my lung turned out to be nothing, by the way. But I am closer to Jesus.

Finally something funny from MM. Well now, maybe Dave Letterman can be funny again if this guy can do it.
I wonder if he'll go after DNC heads Jim Johnson and/or Franklin Raines. Doubt it. Is ACORN a corporation?
John you have to watch this traitorous pigs swill, not me If I want to be lied to I’ll watch MSNBC, or a speech by Barry.
MM was never a documentarian. He's always been a propagandist with an agenda where the means justify the ends. I'm not convinced he could make a historically accurate, unbiased documentary. I'm looking forward to following the progress of this film in hopes that he might actually get greedy and in order to attract a mainstream audience and ticket sales he'll cobble together a 'fair and balanced' presentation of the facts . If not, he'll continue to preach to the choir while the choir director passes out the kool-aid.
And nobody's blamed MM for the Holocaust Museum shooter's motivations? Von Brunn is a 911 Truther.
Who will they blame when CEOs get gunned down in the street?
.
Just as Obama is too busy playing the role of president, so Moore likes to play the benevolent activist. Just as Obama pretends to appeal to the intellect ("words mean something") and goes on to do the exact opposite, so Moore pretends to present you truths which are in fact bald-faced lies. I say bald-faced because, though they are at times thinly veiled, both men rely on you and me lacking both facts to call them on their nonsense, and also lacking the monetary and political wherewithal to counteract their propaganda. (Moore and Obama do not have to appeal to people's intellects to be successful, they just repeat the same lie as a mantra until it is accepted as truth.) Both men have capitalized on crimes and tragedies that hurt Americans (Columbine and the financial collapse) to push their views on scared people. They used specific instances of distress when people's faiths were weakest and told them, "See! Your system was weak and wrong all along! Mine however. . ." They are also both quite skilled at what they do, manipulating emotions.
The sad thing is we need true gadflies to stir us out of complacency sometimes, but never demagogues and hatemongers like Moore, and we need true statesmen to lead us where we might fear to go, but never celebrity politicians who pander to public whim.
Worse, at a time when we most need the real thing, we get the imitation.
Moore appears largely discredited in all but the hard-left crowd, Obama. . .
for the best take on the porcine Michael Moore refer to 'Team America' for the mustard soaked, hot dog eating Moore in all his idiotic ranting glory…
that's actually a reality- as opposed to his work, which is largely myth.
Michael Moore?
I hope he fails.
Michael Moore better watch out. I used to be good at cow tipping.
Now what if this fat f–k has a heart attack at the premiere?
Where the F— are they gonna get 44 pallbearers to carry his sorry carcass away?
And is this pathetic son of a bitch going to place any blame for the economy on the Dali-Bama?
You already KNOW he won't.
What a sorry excuse for a washed-up communist sympathizer.
You know, I'm curious. Michael Moore is attacking "robber barons" for working to make money. Lots of money. Michael Moore has made money. Lots of money. Is he going to go after himself? Is he going to stop because he's made enough money? Or is he going to keep making movies, seemingly with the intent of making money. I'm just curious.
I left the Democratic party when I saw what they had become under Clinton. They have become the party of "wink, wink…we know what we're doing is wrong but what are you really going to do about it"? All done with a smile. How many posters from the left have we seen post things like "We won you lost" or "You just can't stand that you are going to be ruled by a black man?" Quite frankly, if someone can't see that people are literally willing to die to leave their country and you want America to emulate them, you really aren't concerned about the truth. I truly believe there is something in the human psyche that allows you to feel guilt for things you really aren't guilty of. That's the only explanation I can come up with as to why this behavior has been allow to continued.
Michael Moron is an abject idiot. If he want's to bash those who caused the global financial metdown, he need look no further than the Democrats who enabled Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac. That would be Barney Frank et al. It isn't even difficult for a non-economist to figure out, so this must be yet more willfully disingenuous propaganda from an already proven liar.
Like the trolls who sometimes swoop in on BH, my method to deal with this maggot is to ignore him. Actually, a good topic for aspiring conservative film makers would be a documentary detailing each and every inaccuracy in his propaganda films. I wonder if Showtime would like to feature that.
A good doc would be about all of the socialists and socialist policies that have destroyed Europe, South America and now the U.S.
Anyone care to bet on the portion of the film dedicated to Dodd and Frank (or any other Dems who've gotten rich by scamming the system)?
Michael Moore so twists the truth that even left wing papers like the L.A. Weekly have repudiated him. But this trailer does remind me of one thing, that in recent days liberal friends and I for the first thing have something in common, in common with even moderates and those of no political stripe…we are all outraged at the bailouts. So this is just a reflection of that. However Moore is the last people that should lead the outcry…he too makes millions by hurting Americans. I have a long list of friends and family…including my father, who have conditions that fall on the edge of things that would be called a lost cause (myeloma, severe diabetes, etc.) that in reality are treatable through a long fight that a government system would never approve due to "cost management." I'm sure Nolte, (who's a great dude btw) might have found himself in the same situation had the spot on his lung turned out to be something and the government had been in charge. Moore by advocating that system, as his right, though is profiting from his destructive lies.
Me thinks the rotund 'filmmaker' had a few pennys invested with the wrong people – hence why 'this time it's personal'. Like most liberals all he actually cares about is his own bank account.
It's also funny, that Moore, who for the most of his life has been obese would advocate for more government services which would include more money for him because his obesity would no doubt require him to receive more healthcare than the average citizen. You and I would literally be paying more so he could pig out.
MM is a talentless slob. He will muck this up as he mucks up evertyhing he touches.
Well, you know there are rich and then the rich.
Mike is just rich.
He is better, right
Actually, reports are that von Brunn was spouting some stuff that sounded suspiciously like what Rev. Jeremiah Wright was going on about earlier in the week. (About who he perceived as Obama's "handlers"…)
As I posted on another thread (a post which I believe fell through the cracks of Breitbart's "review" process) – I guess von Brunn is just a crazy Wright-winger…
What a pile of pig throw up this guy produces on a regular basis and he has the nerve to call them documentaries…says who??? Oh, and Michael- quit wearing the S hat, you're giving people who really went to Michigan State U., ( myself included) a bad name.
"Wright-winger"
Oh so true……..
Hardly. It's the wealthy and well-connected like Moore who will still have access to non-regulation health care.
Ha Ha. "Showtime".Oh man that's funny!
It to bad for you guys that leftwing documentations turn so many heads.
When it comes to Moore, I think the "S" stands for something else; as in, "Michael Moore is full of 'S.'"
When a gargantuan tub-o-lard waddles by like Michael Moore one does pay attention. I thought he was blown up in the documentary Team America?
Not for us- it's too bad for the country in general, because so many gullible people lap it up without applying any critical thinking. (For those of you in Liberalville, that means actually examining the facts, checking them against other sources, using common sense, etc.). I'll never forget how some people urgently pressed me to see "An Inconvenient Truth" when it first came out. Some of them had genuine fear in their eyes, because they fell for it hook, line and sinker. Same thing to a lesser extent with MM.
Smoke, Mirrors, & BS. Follow the dollars…
What are the chances that Moore will be intellectually honest when it comes to the financial crash and the conclusions to be drawn?
While the crash has many fathers, the bailouts and nationalizations are not the work of "Wall Street robber barons". They are the work of Washington robber barons with no experience in the private sector. This country is now run by political lifers and academics. And unlike the original robber barons, who left viable infrastructure and industries behind, these guys will impoverish us.
The Obama administration is giddy with joy that our panic gave them the chance to control entire industries and reward their political constituents with money (YOUR money). Now the Democrats basically run the car industry and make ample use of their influence to make political, not economic decisions. Read George Will´s current column about Barney Frank, Car Guy. THAT is decadence.
And they will keep doing it until the American car industry goes the way of the British automobile industry. And the British aircraft industry. Think Moore has something intelligent to say about that? Yeah, right.
Any chance insider trading Senators Levin or Dodd will be pilloried in this thing?
Rhetorical question, of course.
"You guys"? From which country are you that you think spreading disinformation about vital issues such as health care is not your problem?
I love this quote…."The movie is not going to be an economics lesson". A dead spider circling the drain of my toilet has forgotten more about economics than this loser will ever know.
And my guess is, if I paid money to see this movie, afterwards, I would be asking the ushers for pitchforks. Problem is, I would need a really big one to penetrate the lard in his ass.
Turn heads? Yeah, sort of like when you turn your head to make sure you don't puke on the person in front of you.
I don't know if 'Sicko' wasn't unsuccessful as a propaganda piece. I know a couple of people who normally don't buy into liberal statist dogma i.e. hate crimes legislation, war on poverty programs, sanctuary cities, etc.; but they were conned by 'Sicko' pretty handily. and why wouldn't most people who are products of state run education.
The medium of documentary is — by nature — deceptive. Narrowing down the narrative to only what the camera captures, then editing it together with a dramatic arch is one big lie. But it's an enjoyable lie. That's why Moore is good at it. It's never accurate because it's not meant to be accurate– just enjoyable.
cont… be conned by it? Since having spent ages 5 through 18 in a government run institution, public school, and getting acclimated to it, it's not a long leap to government run health care for most people.
The federal government has mandated that my toilet use only 1.6 gallons per flush and my light bulb be fluorescent. So it is in keeping with that philosophy of governance that it should run healthcare and eventually someone will figure out that the only way to pay for health care is to take over the casinos and before you know they will be slot machines in the doctor's waiting room.
"Tricks and treachery are the practice of fools that have not wit enough to be honest" -Ben Franklin
I'd say today's Democrat party has plenty of both.
Michael Moore renovated a Theater near his home in Northern Michigan. It has been an indisputable success. Here's the interesting part: His theater and film festival extensively use VOLUNTEERS, no health pllans, no social security, etc. In addition, his business is organized as a non profit, so he doesn't pay TAXES!
Who's Michael Moore? OH………You mean that big fat SLUG who used to make third rate "movies?" Is he still around? (urp!)
I must be the only person on Earth that actually watched "TV Nation". A show on Comedy Central (I think) made by Michael Moore sometime in the '90's. I loved it. He did an episode about how serial killers get away with their crimes and on another episode he took 20 cars to the neighborhood where the guy who invented car alarms lived and set them all off. The shows were entertaining AND informative. But something happened to Moore that also happened to Bill Maher, John Stewart and the rest of their liberal ilk. They started taking themselves so seriously! At that moment they ceased being funny or entertaining.
I tried to read this post. Then, I remembered that I don't care about Michael Moore.
Oh, of course, of course. Even when the idiot went to Cuba he was given access to their health care for people deemed special by the government.
Polling in 2004 showed that Michael Moore did way more to help Republicans elected than Democrats because no one makes liberals worse than Michael Moore. Michael Moore claims that he got his first camera from a friend of the Bush family…I sometimes think he may be a plant to help Republicans look good in comparison. Or a guy smart enough to make millions off of gullible non-critical thinking libs.
My favorite portrait of him!
Uh, yeah, there will be 0.000 seconds discussion of those in his propagandumentary.
He's an incredible hypocite. He condemns capitalism, but capitalism is why he's rich. He's proof that the American dream is real, all his loudmouthed protestations to the contrary.
The spot on my lung turned out to be nothing, by the way. But I am closer to Jesus.
I meant to express my relief and joy upon reading this last line. Nothing like a good scare for prioritizing life's demands. May your good fortune continue!
Yes, he was on an anti-semitic (not to be confused with anti-Zionist–thanks for that nuance, Rev. Wright!) rampage, but it was just one thing on his long list. He had other targets, other munitions.
My point was, simply, that if Mr. Krugman is interested in centering in on a particular sentiment and casting aspersions of blame, then that is a game that can certainly be played by two…
MM, I hear that Flint City government is razing dilapidated structures, so you better get your career out of there.
Michael Moore for President!
Moore & Sheehan 2012
Almost blew my coffee out my nose laughing!
Where are the pitchforks and torches?
Come on down to Texas, Mr. Moore, and you'll find 'em aplenty.
Mr Krugman and Mr Moore play by the same rules, which is, that Anti Semitism, Anti Zionism and Anti Israelism are one and the same, they all contain Bluish People. PS Some words do not get through. Why do you think they all support O'Bah-Ma? He is a friend of the so called palestinians and is pushing a divided Israel on Bibi. The muslims did not accept it in 1948 and won't stand for it 60 years later. BTW Both Wright and von Brunn believe that GW called up all of the Bluish people and told them not to go to work on Sept. 11, 2001. That is why there were no Bluish people killed in the blast.
Mr Moore is just as delusional as Mr Krugman.
Moore is an Ivy League imposter. I am sick of Billionaires and Millionaire who THRIVED on capitalism endorsing Socialism for everyone else. That includes Martha Stewart, Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Brangolina.
How much do you want to bet, that MM will twist the truth so he blames Bush (deserves some of the blame) and the republicans rather than Barney Frank, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, ACORN, and the democrats (who deserve most of the blame). Michael Moore wouldn't know the truth if it fell on him.
Well stated…….
And it's taken forty years of indoctrination to produce a generation of Americans who hate themselves and their country. The anti-establishment of the sixties is now the establishment.
Dali-Bama…priceless!
A +1 for you!
Do you really think I WANT to vomit all over myself?
Have you even read his earnings on his last few movies? Looks like a Dali-Bama balance sheet.
BTW ricky, MM called…he wants his village sycophant back.
Feckin' A right, Hucbald!
Not only that, but this slob is giving pigs a bad name!!!
Don't get me wrong, I love American cars and most of the UAW workers I know are great gals and guys. Having said that what are the chances that The Whopper (Mark Steyn's phrase) will say word one about the comparitive costs of making a Japnese car versus an American auto? The underlying reason for the collpse of GM and Chrusler was their inability to stay competitive in both the US and world markets. Blame for that must be shared by unimaginative management and a workforce that simply assumed that it would be 1959 forever. Look for MM to create a piece of 1930's style agitprop that the critics will laud as a "balanced and nuanced economics lesson."
Will Mr. Moore even discuss the part that George Soros played in this issue?
Probably not!
