$16.6M Opening Day for ‘Angels,’ Short of ‘Da Vinci’s’ $28M
by John NolteWith a haul of $16.6 million, “Angels & Demons” nabbed the top spot from “Star Trek” yesterday, but fell short of “The Da Vinci Code’s” $28.6 million Friday debut in May of 2006.
Compared to “Spider-Man,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Narnia,” and “National Treasure” this is a pretty steep drop for a sequel, but while everyone saw “The Da Vinci Code,” have you met anyone who liked it? For a sequel to perform close or even better than the original, it has to engender some goodwill and on no front did “Da Vinci” do that.
According to Steve Mason’s weekend projections (available here), “Demons” is looking at a $45M opening weekend, which is nearly $30M short of its predecessor, which opened at $77M.

No surprise here, reviews by 'entertainment' newspapers have been pretty abbysmal.
Considering the Catholic angle, Obamaland has reached a new low in the excercise of freedom of speech: 78 year old Catholic priest hauled of in cuffs at Notre Dame http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiz4tfjSuPc
Keyes ao went to the slammer till monday, guess they're afraid he'll talk the Amazing Prompter Guy under the table. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090515/ap_on_re_us/u...

Da Vinci Code sucked. Plus A&D is sandwiched between Star Trek, Wolverine, and Thursday's release of Terminator. It won't be as sucessful.
despite the mixed blessing of the new 'Star Trek' one suspects several viewings of that to be superior to one viewing of the dopey Dan Brown series. 'Angels and Demons' may be better than the 'DaVinci Code' but that would be damning by faint praise… 'Terminator Salvation' needs to erase the anti-Christian Bale sentiment that seems to be out there, and 'Woverine' appears to be but a trifle.
No, 'Trek' it is- and despite a convoluted parallel universe plot device which allows the screenwiters to have it both ways, and a little too much Nimoy, it has a middle third that is just excellent… enjoy.
Good !
"Prince Caspian", the Narnia sequel took in $55 million the opening weekend took in $55 million its opening weekend, and the press seemed much more eager to call it a disappointment.
Am getting tired of seeing Howard and Hanks everywhere on TV, so at least that will end soon.
As usual, Nolte hit the nail on the head when he said (paraphrased) everyone saw DaVinci Code but do you know anyone who liked it?
Right on the mark! I read the book (thought it was ok for a thriller tho' Dan Brown is no Michael Crichton) but the movie sucked! I don't get the fascination with Tom Hanks. Someone please enlighten me.
Ron "Dopie" Howard gives Gingers a bad name. Hanks has not been any good since 'Bosom Buddies;' and I really wonder what Brown spends on analysis for his self-loathing…
Tom Hanks has lost his luster with me, likewise, with Ron Howard! Stop with the political statements in movies. Ron Howard was great as director of Splash & Cocoon. I loved Tom Hanks in Bosom Buddies, Sleepless in Seattle,
Big, & several other films up to 1995. Otherwise, Hanks seems to have lost his mojo.
The 78 year old priest is a retired military officer according to news reports so he is a double scourge to the Obama Admin.
Hee hee hee, ha ha, tough crap!
Apparently there's a meter attached to their bank accounts the rings when they reach a pre-set comfort amount the triggers the avalanche of political statements and left wing hate speech. I, like you, liked and respected them both in decades past.
Hanks is one of the best actors out there. But even the best are worthless when they let propaganda get in the way of storytelling.
TERRIFIC news! To echo Rush, I'm hope it fails.
BTW, that's another damned good point about the film of 'Da Vinci Code'. NO one I know liked it, including me. The main reaction I got was frustration. I loved the book – despite the stupid subject, 'Da Vinci Code' was a beautifully written murder mystery novel that kept you breathlessly turning pages until the very end. Once you picked it up, you couldn't put it down. But the movie? Within 2 minutes (I counted) I was going WTF? Every thrilling moment, every tension, every surprise, etc., was smashed to worthless pieces by Howard and (H)Akiva. They both literally destroyed what could have been a thrilling film. That film sucked.
I don't know. It almost seems like divine intervention to me. "Passion of the Christ" – which tells the truth about Jesus – makes a billion dollars worldwide. But "DaVinci Code" (which is not a very memorable or likeable movie) and now it's yawn-inducing sequel – each which tell lies about Jesus and God – fail at the box-office.
Does it need to be any clearer than that?
Agree with Butch on divine intervention. There's an interesting article on this movie at Huffin'-N-Puffin' Post (as referenced on the blog Homepage). Seems that neither the Church nor evangelicals made a big fuss over the release of this stinker, which helped keep the publicity down. Good for them! When your enemy is about to self-destruct, move aside and let them do it (or something to that paraphrased effect). Now I suppose Op'e and Paw Hanks will want to blame Christians for conspiring to keep ticket sales down by doing… nothing. Hah! I'm absolutely delighted the thing is bombing in any case, as it amply deserves to. Might be a good time to hang your director's hat, Op'e, get your cane pole and go fishing.
I hope this movie tanks !!!!!
and oh yeah…Tom Hanks can go pound sand in France !!!!
He pays in diamonds that he earns from his royalties! And then he goes home to his solid gold house!
Sorry, but that is wishful thinking. Da Vinci Code was a big success, in terms of money. And Angels & Demons is not a bomb either. Personally, I´m not interested in watching either but other people clearly are.
Yes, it needs to be a lot clearer than that.
I´d like to cut Hanks a lot of slack, since he was involved in From the Earth to the Moon and Band of Brothers, both excellent and relatively accurate celebrations of American achievements (the 5 second cameo of Al Franken in "Moon" nothwithstanding). But The Pacific is coming out in 2010 and I will be very surprised if they don´t put some "politically correct" poison pills in there.
I'm looking forward to the comedic sequel, Angles and Dumbasses, in which Dopey Howard and Tom Chunks show how all the evil in history was one massive conspiracy still run by Dick Cheney aka Satan.
Well I liked the Da Vinci Code. I liked the book because it gives a view back into history. Did I think it was real no? I bought the book in the fiction section of the book store. The film gave a look inside some of the images I had missed. Neither film struck me as Anti-Christian.
Now as to the director and actor's politics. It is among the reasons I am not choosing to go see the new film. I think the changing of the bad guy fromIslamic to Christian is wrong. If you are using material you should be faithful to it.
Ron Howard is a bad guy. He cloaks himself as some all American but in reality he is just another intolerant Liberal hater. Hanks is no better.
The sad thing this week is the Pope staying silent on Obama's trip to Notre Dame. The Pope is a Coward!!!! Just in it for the money changers at the Vatican. Pope missed the great opportunity to challenge Obama but went cowardly home and shut the curtains. The catholic church is nothing anymore. Its dead to me.
The catholic church ABORTED its principles.
John – your assessment is dead on. The original Da Vinci Code movie sucked big time so people are naturally more suspect of the sequal. Secondly, Both Ron Howard and Tom Hanks have become much more obnoxiously activist with their politics in the past couple of years, a natural turn-off for conservative viewers. Third, I know I probably represent a very small minority here, but when I retired several years back, I sunk a hundred grand into building a state of the art, acoustically perfect home movie theater in the house so I obviously enjoy movies, but am typically content to now wait until they come out on DVD rather than drive 15 miles to the closest cineplex. I think a lot more folks do something similar. Box office may not be quite as strong a barometer as to how a particular movie ultimately does.
(whistled to the tune of Andy Griffith Show theme song) Dah do do do dah do do, do dah do do do do do dah do!
A few people on here are trying to be too nice in saying that a 16 million dollar opening is a success. Sure, for the "Napoleon Dynamite" sequel, it would be huge. But for a "prestigious" "film" by oscar-winner Ron Howard starring multi-oscar-winner Tom Hanks from an "acclaimed" novel by "genius" author Dan Brown, 16 million is a HUGE embarrassment. Believe me, no one at Imagine Entertainment is looking at this as a success in any way whatsoever. They are going to talk about it as little as possible then tout the HUGE release on DVD a few months from now.
THAT'S how clear this is.
It is odd how Hollywood A-players get all the money to re-hash trash while stereotyping Conservatives as non -creative types.
As for the movie, if Da Vinci Code was horrid this must mean that only sado-masochists love torturing themselves by paying money to see Angels & Demons.
Instead of watching Dopey & Schmaltzy I was enjoying my time at the GI Film Festival.
Opie was trying to create some controversy by saying the Vatican caused problems for them. How pathetic!!
As I understand it, the chief criticism of 'The DaVinci Code' is that it gives a very false view back into history and in so doing it libels a number of good men and institutions and insults the intelligence of learned people everywhere.
Look I happen to be one of those folks who look at the so called good men of the past and look for the enlightened self interest rather than great and noble men who did what they did for the good of mankind.
Also this book is fiction. It has no basis in reality short of allowing the reader to see thingsdifferently.
Also those noble men did a great job of burning to death a lot of men and women they felt were dangerous to their power base.
They nearly got Martin Luther. For daring to point out their sins.
And when you praise them for their funny picture they´ll look at you and say: "What do you mean, comedy?"
