Review: Observe and Report
by John NolteSeth Rogen’s appeal baffles me, at least as a leading man in romantic comedies, albeit raunchy ones. There’s nothing warm about the guy and no matter how sincere he tries to be an undercurrent of sullen hostility never leaves his voice. Rogen may look like a cute little teddy bear, but there’s nothing cuddly about him. There’s talent there to be sure, and he’s watchable enough, but connecting and rooting for his characters never comes easy, if at all.
No matter how crude or wild things got, Adam Sandler, Chevy Chase, John Candy, John Belushi, and Bill Murray have all managed to capture our sympathy in a single scene. Rogen lacks that gift, which makes him the perfect choice to play a deluded, territorial mall cop in “Observe and Report.”
Ronnie (Rogen) wants to be a hero and leader of men, and he’ll be damned if he’ll let anything get in the way, including his own limitations and station in life. Overweight, not terribly bright and suffering from psychological problems serious enough to require medication, Ronnie’s positioned himself as the Supercop of the Forest Ridge Mall, and with a team of three other mall cops made up of overweight twins and the sycophant Dennis (Michael Pena - finally breaking out of the sensitive-Hispanic typecasting ghetto), skateboarders, suspicious Middle Easterners and anyone foolish enough to make Ronnie’s day had best beware this Hall Monitor from Hell.
Ronnie’s smitten with cosmetic counter-girl Brandi (the always brilliant and ridiculously fetching Anna Faris), but for obvious reasons she’s not interested in him and manages to keep him at arms-length until she’s accosted by a flasher who works the mall parking lot. The police, in the form of Detective Harrison (The Mighty Ray Liotta) are called in, allowing Ronnie to engage in a turf war that delights him and position himself as Brandi’s protector.
Emboldened by “his case” and how working it feeds the delusion, Ronnie applies to be a police officer, romances (if you want to call it that) Brandi and assumes that because life is going so well that it’s now okay to go off his meds. Obviously Ronnie can’t keep reality from intruding forever, but the harder it tries the more extreme his reactions, which all leads to a smart and unexpected finale.
“Observe and Report” is a fairly cold character study of an interesting but extremely unlikable man. The tone awkwardly shifts between Adam Sandler’s bawdier films and something much darker. At times the comedy is surprisingly good-natured but on a dime turns over-the-top hostile and very, very violent. What saves it, though, is something of a lost art in Hollywood these days, and that’s pacing. If there’s been a more expertly paced film released in the last year, I haven’t seen it. This thing hums — never too slow, never too fast. The lack of sympathetic characters keeps you from caring what happens next, but the story moves so damn well you keep watching.
Rogen is absolutely outstanding as Ronnie. Because his character is a habitual and self-destructive truth-teller (as Ronnie sees the truth), the script’s littered with monologues that in lesser hands would’ve come off as self-conscious, actor show pieces, but Rogen pulls them off effortlessly, never breaking character. The supporting cast is equally good, especially Faris as a disgusting princess and Ray Liotta repressing rage and then not repressing rage as only Ray Liotta can.
There’s much to admire about “Observe and Report,” but little to like. Loaded with relentless full-frontal male nudity, foul language and blaring music clips, you get the sense that writer/director Jody Hill is trying too hard. The film’s biggest failure, though, is that for all the build up, you never get that knot of dread in your stomach wondering what Ronnie might do next. But that’s what happens when you can’t decide on the kind of film you’re making. There’s a potentially brilliant black comedy in “Observe and Report,” and an enjoyable silly one, unfortunately the mash-up of the two dilutes the impact making for an interesting but remote 86-minutes.

Dead on again… Seth Rogen seems more inflicted upon us than desired; the only thing about the equally huh?
star Kevin James that is any good is his lame 'Paul Blart Mall Cop' stole the thunder from this turkey. Jody Hill is Danny McBride's guy- he is a true talent- and 'Foot Fist Way' was actually a very interesting character study of an equally repulsive character… either way as the saying goes 'Observe and Report'- rent it…
DH (can I still call you DH?), I love your reviews. They are the bread and butter of my week. I'm glad to see Ray Liotta gets the "mighty" honorific.
I'm getting a "Cable Guy" and/or "SubUrbia" vibe from O&E. I was going to go see it tomorrow, but yours is the second review that's highlighted the film's darkness (NRO is home to the other one). Not in the mood for dark – sounds like a netflixer.
I thought Ronnie was a sympathetic character. This is a guy who always wanted to do the right thing, and for whatever reason was taken off the path — he's sincere, but has drifted into delusion at times. It's not until the end that he gathers himself and realizes that he can contribute from his position.
I thought it was a wonderful comedy.
Reviews on this movie have been all over the place. Guess I'll wait for the DVD and rent it. Considering the subject and tone of the movie, I haven't read a really good review, but surprisingly I haven't seen any that absolutely hated it either.
I rarely find Adam Sandler's characters likable … there's an anger within them that puts me off every time.
And this is Rogen's second film in which he engages in severe violence/action/etc. It doesn't suit … and it's odd that he would be attracted to these kind of roles.
"O and R" does have potential," but it misses for all the reasons you mentioned.
Its so obvious I'm surprised you missed it. Seth Rogen's appeal is simple irony. Like urban hipsters wearing "trucker hats" and drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon.
That's all there is to it. And often that's enough (considering the target market of his movies; semi nerdy, college educated, urban or suburban white males in their 20s).
I'll probably wait for video on this one ('cause I'm cheap) but it sounds like it should be mildly entertaining.
As Elaine explaine in "The Apology" episode of Seinfeld, the nude female body is a work of art and the nude male body is just…ultility. Why do Apatow genre comedies insist on fosting the full frontal make nudity upon us?
Hey, even urban hipsters need cheap beer like PBR.
Well balanced review John. I judged it a darn good movie (3.5 beams out of 5), finding it to be 40% LOL funny, 50% hide the women and children. Make that 80% hide the innocents, yet still 40% LOL, more than enough funny to get the job done. While it is spectacularly mean, violently so, it is no more cruelly subversive than was Borat. (Oh great. Now Borat marks the limits of acceptable taste. Talk about defining deviancy down.)

Pardon my ignorance but someone is going to have to explain the whole irony thing to me again since I obviously don't get it. How is Seth Rogen's leading man status ironic? Are the filmmakers being insincere by casting him? Are they trying to be subversive? And am I even in the ballpark?

Seth Rogen, and all of the Apatow crew, are excruciating. It amazes me that every Apatow and Apatow-influenced comedy, no matter how lame and unfunny, consistently scores 80% or more on review aggregators.
I think your review was pretty accurate. I saw the movie today, and found it interesting, but not entertaining, somewhat violent, with way too many unlikely events. The full frontal was excessive.
[...] again Hollywood steps over dollars to make pennies on “Observe and Report” and we’re forced to return to a more tolerant Hollywood on DVD. Congratulate [...]
Good review. I saw the movie about thirty minutes ago and I agree with you that the pacing was good, but the movie just felt a little rushed. I would've enjoyed seeing another twenty or thirty minutes of the movie had they made it longer.
The soundtrack was pretty badass too.
Click! Here goes yet another film into Netflix.
BTW, it's not because I'm cheap! It's because I can't stand kids screaming in the aisle, jerkos using their cell phones two rows behind me and a couple arguing three rows down. And besides, I make WAY better popcorn!
Rogen had an interesting comment being interviewed for Reel Comedy on Comedy Central; He said that as near as he could tell, his character was the villain.
This movie is DIABOLICAL in the way it subverts the whole run of "goofball hero" movies that have dominated mainstream comedy for over a decade now. MOST "guy" comedies like this one are about derranged, developmentally-arrested goofs being overzealous about their meager station in life… but they're usually nincompoops so it's all just in good fun. Ronnie is ALMOST the same, but with the nincompoop part removed: He's NOT a harmless eccentric, he's a dangerous and dangerously-effective psychopath. He really IS the ticking time-bomb of "justice" he imagines himself as, he really IS fully capable of committing the acts of violence he threatens… but only the audience really knows that. We get to watch the supporting cast treat this lunatic like another Tommy Boy/Happy Gilmore/Ron Burgundy blowhard frighteningly oblivious to the fact that the equivalent of Travis Bickle is walking among them.
I havent seen an actual funny comedy in ages and I doubt I'd go for this one. Just seeing Rogen on movie posters every other week is enough to make me stay away.
You are not alone. I've been to 3 movies in 20 years. Too many clowns running around and annoying everyone.
I think peope think they are funny. I'll take 'Stir Crazy' any day.
Wow, sounds like an absolute weiner-fest. If only i were a gay man with bad taste i would rush to see it, as it is i'll go and see something funny instead.
People are desperate for even brief diversions from reality, especially among those who seek them. You could get 80% approval for legal weed and magic brownies sold from vending machines, provided they take credit cards.
No wonder Dems are so upset about No Child Left Behind. Lord help us if kids should actually start reading books for entertainment again.
Back in college, National Bohemian beer, cheapest around. Urban hipsters should like the name. Irony points from it now being brewed by Miller and sold by Pabst.
"Seth Rogen seems more inflicted upon us than desired"
Excellent observation.
Interestingly, MANY Ho'wood stars are inflicted upon us. Madonna comes immediately to mind. She's toxic to a film, yet even after a disastrous "career" in the lead, she shows up in a walk on in a James Bond film (forget which one) and even that part is so off putting it was the last film Brosnan made as Bond. Coincidence or celluloid contagion?
Then there's Sean Penn,an excellent actor and a former Mr. Madonna, however, his 'just smelled bowel gas' expression ruins (for me) any film he's in. By the looks of his box office receipts, the same is true for a lot of people.
George Clooney is a very handsome man so I understand, however, his films do only okay. Yet Ho'wood LOVES him even if the customers don't and he gets work (and millions).
There was an excellent letter in the WSJ yesterday which stated since the film industry gets subsidies in the form of tax breaks from States and the Feds, The Dem Congress and President should step in and tax the stars' million dollar paychecks at 90% over $250,000.00. GREAT POINT
I don't think you missed anything at all. Zundforge is right about Rogen's audience, but wrong about the reason. He's popular with the semi/pseudo-nerdy hipster douchebag market because he's one of them, or at least representative of how they would like to see themselves. That's all. His characters may usually share the S/PHDs' tedious and pretentious ironic sensibility, but his appeal to them is not ironic.
I actually liked Knocked Up quite a bit, and that's the only thing I've seen Rogen in. This outing doesn't seem like anything I'd care for, so I've already had it on my, "I've got to make sure I miss that" list. However, Rogen is now working with a personal trainer to slim down and bulk up to play The Green Hornet, which was a TV series I loved as a kid (Bruce Lee as Kato was amazing, actually, and I think Steven Chow will do the role right too). Now that is a movie I'm highly psyched about!
I will wait for a free Monday at Red Box DVD to watch this one. Seth Rogen is one of those guys who perpetually has a mongo pinch of Copenhagen snuff under his lower lip. I keep waiting for him to spit or smile with flakes of tobacco on them. Free Movie Monday at RedBox is my way of sticking it to Hollywood. I love it. If they are lame, I turn them off.
too true. It is, andhas been for a long time a closed community where insiders and relatives have a huge advantage- it is a creative community that resists creativity from anyone outside their ranks. Look at Sam Jackson. A good, not great actor. He appears in betwwen 2-5 films per year. There isn't anyone else to do those roles? Madonna was in 'Die Another Day' and lobbied hard to be included in the cast after she was tapped to do the title song. Sean Penn makes either bad movies or good ones for so narrow an audience as to be ignored… love the WSJ piece; good reporting on your part…
I saw this movie and I think I rated it slightly lower than Nolte.
True, there were some terrific moments in Observe and Report, but overall the whole outing felt very forced. Rogan's character, as pointed out by Nolte, is simply unlikeable as a bipolar mall cop. And the third act is a real messy departure into the absurd.
Seth Rogen? Now frankly, I think he's great but I believe there's a bit of a "Samson" complex going on. With his fluffy curly locks he possesses a man-child likabilty, with the hair cropped short – not quite as likable.
Unfortunately, in Observe and Report, Rogan's likability is stretched to the breaking point. I just can't bring myself to like him at all.
