‘Brothers At War’ Opens March 13th
by John NolteWith ”Brothers at War” set for release this Friday, over the course of the coming week Big Hollywood will feature a full review of the documentary along with an interview with the film’s creator, Jake Rademacher. I attended one of the advance screenings, and worried it would be nothing more than a right-wing response to Hollywood’s punishing series of anti-war films, “Brothers at War” ended up being one the most pleasant experiences of last year. Here’s a little of what I wrote at the time:
Thankfully, all my hand-wringing ended up being pointless because Jake Rademacher’s intimate documentary about his need to bridge the growing distance between himself and his two younger brothers serving in Iraq is a beautiful and moving piece of work which transcends agenda to tell the story of three brothers at war, not in Iraq, but with the gap their different life choices created between them. That’s why the film works — it’s not about Iraq. Iraq just happens to be where one brother had to journey to recapture something lost. …
What makes the film so effective is its honesty. Unlike these anti-war documentaries and narratives where you feel manipulated by the narrow context of what the filmmaker is choosing to show you, Brothers at War feels fully fleshed out. There are plenty of horrific moments to bolster the anti-war argument and many hopeful moments to arm the other side, but what rises from all of this are those magnificent men and women who serve their country by leaving their loved ones behind to run towards danger.
Anti-troop propagandist would choose only to show our guys cussing, annoyed with slow-moving Iraqi soldiers, and strutting their machismo. Pro-troop propagandist would choose only to show the brave, heroic, and vulnerable moments.
Rademacher shows it all, and when the smoke clears, heroes emerge.
Your position on the Iraq War will have nothing to do with your opinion of the film. If you’re a fan of intelligent, moving stories, “Brothers at War” is a must-see.
Here’s the the film’s website. Below is the current release schedule, and here’s information on how to bring “Brothers at War” to a theatre near you.

You only wish that this would be a feature film; the public traditionally does not see documentaries. Still, it is a good and wonderful thing, that our brothers (and sisters), the future leaders of this country once this onerous regieme is replaced are starting to assert themselves- and spread the truth. Hooah!
This reminds me…when will Lone Survivor be made into a movie?!!?
Thanks John for the info. I look forward to seeing it. Sounds like an interesting documentary which will show and reveal much more than the narrow focus. Truth is often revealed when we look the other way.

Thanks, John. Look for my interview with director Jake Rademacher mid-week here at Big Hollywood. Jake is a fascinating fellow and I really enjoyed the time I spent talking about the film with him.
I'll be interested to see this. I just watched Taking Chance, an HBO original. Much the same thing, a movie about the incredible people that make up our military and not so much a political statement for or against the Iraqi war.
"Lone Survivor" is already in the works. Last I hear, Peter Berg was set to direct.
I saw a sneak preview of this feature-length documentary at The Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago on Feb. 27. As someone who spent 20 years in the military, and has been a film buff since the late 1960s, I have to say this is one of the best, and moving, documentaries I've ever seen.
I think there is no question that this film deserves an Oscar nomination for best documentary of 2009.
Which means it will totally be ignored.
And thats why we need an awards ceremony here. I once half-jokingly suggested we call them the Burts's, but we could also go with the Heston's, or for max liberal eyescrossing we could go with the Reagan's.
I like Reagans best, but I could also go with Hestons…
We need special mention categories…"Most left-leaning picture ignored by the population in general"
Anyone else?
Nice to hear this kind of movie can still be made and appreciated.
Thanks for the heads up.
As with most of the military films released over the last decade, my reaction to this one is one of apprehension. The public does not understand what it means to be under fire and being forced to make hard decisions of life and death in the span of a breath. I remember being home on leave when Black Hawk Down came out and having a civilian bitching out how we killed kids in Somalia. I had to challenge them with the idea of having a 12 year old pointing an AK at your head. The response needless to say broke my heart. And that happened in Santa Monica. I can only hope that with Lone Survivor that the reality of what lead to the ambush is well and honestly portrayed. Thank you for those that support our mission. And don't forget those that gave you everything that they had.
The film received a standing ovation from the Soldiers who watched it here at Fort Hood during an advanced showing this last week.
It is nice to see something that reflects the reality of our service rather than a particular point of view. I'm sure it took a lot of discipline to remain neutral as a film-maker. I for one wish this movie great success.
What about Ben Stein's evolution documentary ?
Great book !
Would anyone or any group out there like to discuss how to get a showing or a weekend's worth of showings in the Denver/ Colorado Springs area? Plenty of ex-military in either market. I'll also go out on a limb and bet that many without military heritage could appreciate the film.
Regrettably, there are no plans to show it in my area (NYC). It would probably do well in the outer boroughs, and maybe alleviate the Manhattan myopia.
If any Colorado-based fans of BigHollywood woud like to sign a petition to get BAW screened or booked into a front range theater (Denver? The burb's? Colorado Springs?), please visit my petition here:

I intend to make Jake Rademacher and the chaps at Samuel Goldwyn Films aware of the great military community here in Colorado, so sign up! And tell your friends! (It's either this or we'll have to pony up for 1,000 tickets and guarantee a theater time slot.)
