Sunday, Sunday, Sunday… Big Hollywood Live-Blogs the Oscars
by John NolteThis Sunday, February 22nd, starting around 4:30pm PST/ 7:30ET - please join Andrew Breitbart, Gary Graham, Iowahawk, Stage Right, Andrew Leigh, Robert Avrech, John Romano, Ernie Mannix and more… when The Big Hollywood Gang live-blogs the 81st annual Academy Awards.
And you are encouraged to live-blog right along with us in both the comments and a special open thread that will be set up just for this occasion.
Our original plan was to include a drinking game where we would all down a shot every time a celebrity gushed over President Obama, but fear of blindness quashed that. So while we come up with something else, we hope you’ll make plans to be here.

I think I will need the drinking game BEFORE I watch the Oscars.

I wish you luck, you're a braver man than I, Gunga Din.
Please, don't. Just ignore them, like everybody else.
Our original plan was to include a drinking game where we would all down a shot every time a celebrity gushed over President Obama
You really dont' want us getting past the monologue then?
I'll drink a shot every time they thank Obama, imply opposition to same sex marriage is hateful or imply that I'm divisive. Then I'll chop off a testicle for each time they thank our troops for their work in a just war.
…I'll be live-blogging.
After the Academy's snub of The Dark Knight for Best Picture, compounded with the borderline crime of filling that fifth slot with Holocaust-revisionist drivel like The Reader, I was set on boycotting the Oscars. But then I realize that I'll have to tune in to see Heath Ledger's inevitable win. Still, I'll be turning off the TV after that.
I won't be live-blogging. As much as I would LOVE to watch the Oscar telecast, I have plans that night, you know – a thing. See, we had planned to make plans, and uhm… You know, the wife, and, we, uhm… You understand.
You could always wait till it shows up on YouTube!
I'm in. I can't remember the last time I watched the oscars. I already promised myself I would down a guinness when I see Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens perform. I have two little girls and those songs haunt my dreams.
Can't say I'm exactly looking forward to the Oscars with…what's the word? …Oh yes, "anticipation." A bunch of overpaid leftists whining about how everyone ELSE doesn't give enough to the gummit for healthcare in someplace you never heard of, and how our Global Warming epidemic (currently causing hypothermia) is only going to worsen the plight of polar bears, just doesn't exactly seem like something I'd rather do than, say, a five hour Guitar Hero marathon complete with carpel tunnel syndrome and hearing loss (cuz you have to blast it through an amp or you're doing it wrong).
[...] Big Hollywood wrote an interesting post today on Sunday, Sunday, Sundayâ
This sounds like great fun. I always watch the Oscars with the sound off for the dresses…you guys can provide my "soundtrack"!
What the drinking game is off? I already bought a case of Popov Vodka for the occasion.
What? The drinking game is off? I already bought a case of Popov Vodka for the occasion.
Yeah, sounds great.
I'll watch the Oscars and chime in.
And by watch the Oscars I mean the MLB Network.
It's Spring Training for chrissakes
John, as odious as I find much of the Reader to be, how exactly is it Holocaust Revisionism? I'm not disagreeing that the ultimate payoff of the film is a little odd, but I don't necessarily agree with the idea that the film is necessarily sympathetic to the lead character.
I work on Sunday so I will be joining in late. Looking forward to reading the comments about the Oscar's.
To be fair, I actually haven't seen the film. I got the impression from Ron Rosenbaum's piece in Slate, in which the film is identified as a kind of Holocaust revisionism for, among other things, its apparent attempt to exonerate "ordinary" Nazi-era Germans from any sort of guilt:
http://www.slate.com/id/2210804/pagenum/all/
Well, good. I was a bit worried about all those forced to endure such drivel for the sake of the website.
Still, this raises an interesting question, is "the wife" still known as THLNICMH, or has she adopted a different nom de web?
Sorry, John — we talked to legal and they wouldn't go for it. Their exact words:
A drinking game under normal circumstances would be fine, but were this to turn into a Celebutard-athon, and we think it might, the liability could be staggering.
Lawyers.
Pardon? Why on earth would ANYONE watch this stupid show? While I salute those of you who have the intestinal fortitude to fight the gag reflex for 4 hours – I have to ask, why is anyone bothering?
It is fitting that the Oscars come right in the very middle of the absolute worst part of the year: the horrible gap between the Super Bowl and Opening Day.
We've done the math and are pretty sure that if we can get 4,300 readers and all of our contributors to watch the show Sunday night, that will double the ratings.
Join me in this bailout.
What is this movie called “Slumdog Millionaire”? Is that about Obama’s plan to bailout the unqualified sub-prime mortgagers?
I already can't stomach most of the stuff we're bailing out. What's one more candybar wrapper added to the refuse pile?
Seriously, there's gotta be a hockey game on SOMEWHERE Sunday….
Sadly, I regret to say I have to take out the garbage that night.
I'll get me a sparkly dress and some living room seatfillers. I'm in.
Years ago at Superbowl parties my family and friends had an informal pool set up – and it had nothing to do with who won, the score, the spread….it was predicated on what I can remember as closest count of "attaboys" – where one team member slaps another on the butt for a good play or touchdown, others were for spiking (number), I forget the others (it HAS been about 35 years).
Perhaps we could set up a similar informal pool for numbers of (a) Obama acolades, (b) Bush Bashing, (c) thanking my 3rd grade teacher for inspiring me to winning this Oscar, ….well, you get the idea…
I think there has been only one point towards letting the audience know of ones concern for the Indians – giving them land (along with an unstated balloon payment)
Other categories: Letting the audience know about your support of (pick your ribbon – that should be at least 10 sub categories by itself)
The winner of the BH pool would get……..the admiration of everyone…
I hear ya, man! MLB Network (in HD even, sniff-sniff) is my go-to channel these days. Now if only I could get them to bite on this Oscar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIx9VQxLMVY&
I'm with you…this will be my first time watching and live blogging. I admit the anticipation is for the blogging part. Maybe someone will surprise me and take a pot shot at salary caps per picture, and out with the limos and mansions. It could happen? Nah…
Is it OK for me to root for Anne Hathaway even if she is a communist? She's young. She could still learn.
You're my hero!!
I no longer care for the Oscars anymore. It's nothing but an overblown, self-congratulating, glorifying liberal dog-and-pony show.
I wasn't even going to watch this year, but after Mr. Nolte invited me to the online-partaaaay, I will cast an eye on the tinsel love fest, and type type type type my thoughts. (Maybe Jack Daniel's fueled – so look out.)
Heyyyyyyy Ladyyyyyy, I am happy about Jerry Lewis though. Love him. Jerry Lewis's offscreen persona does not take any crap. I hope he goes off on the academy for overlooking him during his productive years. The guy was ROBBED for not being recognized for his performance in 'The King Of Comedy'. Utterly fantastic.
I will watch it through all your eyes and comment on the commentors. I won't abuse the Plasma screen TV with such drivel! HA HA HA!
But JN I will be here. As long as I can make fun of Sean Penn, Clooney and the rest.

My initial reaction is that while I want to help support Big Hollywood, I do not want to support the Oscars.
Besides, my only five comments, repeated ad nauseum, would be:
This is boring.
Oh for God's sake shut up.
Yay. More LIb propaganda. I was hoping they'd remind me I'm stupid and ignorant.
We know. Obama is so dreamy.
Since Dark Knight isn't up for Best Picture this is all illegitimate.
Excellent! Would never waste my time anymore watching the live show but seriously looking forward to the live blogging!
Oscar Who…?
I plan to studiously ignore the event, the date, the nominees, and the so-called winners, now and in perpetuity evermore.
Think Seti kicking Moses out of his kingdom in "The Ten Commandments" and you're on the right track.
When the douches at AMPAS stop nominating dreck and offal, and gushing praise like a spitoon with a leak over the most fawning leftist tripe, I'll consider caring again.
Until then, the entiree kabuki charade is dead to me.
And when you see the ratings tomorrow, you'll see I've got millions of friends.
"Oscar 2011: Live on Bravo! Network, from 2-2:30AM, right after the infomercial 6-pack from 11PM-2AM "
Aesop, agreed. I never watch 'em either. If nothing better comes up, like the bubonic plague, then I will stop in and check check check it out. But I insist I be inebriated.
Eric P-upthread, sorry don't remember your whole name, your clip is a riot. Everyone should watch it.
"Big Hollywood live-blogs the Oscars"
Better you guys than me. I haven't watched one of these libertine love-ins in years. The very last one I watched was the year (can't remember it offhand) Sir Ian McKellan was up for Best Supporting Actor, and was passed over for some guy in some minor movie I'd never heard of. I may have big disagreements with the guys views, but he deserved that Oscar. I swore them off, and haven't been back since (and I'm glad being that it seems they've fallen into nominating only the most left-wing or unpopular crap Hollywood has to offer).
When the Dark Knight didn't even get a sniff this year, that only reinforced my feeling about the Oscars. To hell with them. Let them keep getting shrinking ratings and irrelevance.
Well, I have to say that I had fun Jude's live blogging with "24" – I will join in. You realize, of course, most of us will be mocking the Oscars so see you there!
Oh this is gonna be fun Big Hollywood will make it worth watching. Though I do miss Drudges radio show I use to listen to him and his commentary during award season.
Dark Knight was nominated for 8 Oscars.
Really Rob…….
You must know apologize to all the fine people that put on Dog and Pony shows.
I used to watch all the awards shows, religiously. Now I can't even stand the thought of them. I'm tired of being insulted by the very people whose pockets I line by supporting their careers.
Between that and the thought of the types of things that are celebrated, I just can't stomach them anymore.
It makes me sad. I used to love these things.
This is probably bogus, but if it's not, it's a disaster. Now I almost want to watch just to see..
http://bitsandpieces.us/2009/02/20/oscar-winners-...
Oh, was that Oscars thing supposed to be tonight? I totally didn't notice.
Other than for BSA, what for? Things like art direction. Not having it up for any of the big awards is a farce.
I can't wait! I'm beginning to inflate all of the whoopie cushions now!
Oh……
You mean I actually have to watch it to live blog about it…..
Honestly I think your comments would be the only intereesting thing. I don't really have to watch do I?
Yikes!
Take a drink every time someone works "Yes We Can" into their speech (won't that be nauseating).
i have to do my laundry and take out the trash as well, so I won't actually watch live (except maybe for best director/picture – go Slumdog!), but I will tune into the live blog to see what you wonderful people have to say about it all.
Andrew Breitbart, Gary Graham, Iowahawk, Stage Right, Andrew Leigh, Robert Avrech, John Romano, Ernie Mannix and more…
In that case…I'm in!
But I just CAN'T watch it myself. I'll have to take you guys word for it.
Not Over
Well since it's Hollywood, and since SAG is holding us all hostage, they should now say "Yes We Canada".
Take a drink each time you see a TV star. You'll be passed out in an hour.
God love Mickey Rourke. His dog died 6 days ago—the one he always carried around—and he brought the dog's custom tuxedo with him to the Oscars. PLEASE let him win so he'll show the tux.
so where's the live blogging happening? on this thread or….???
So Meryl Streep's a lesbian now? Did I miss a memo somewhere?
Umm, so hollywood is worried these are going to be the most boring Awards ever and they start off by dictaing all the award nominees. Brilliant! At an oscars where no one knows any of the movies, it's such a great idea to NOT promote them any chance you get. Unreal
Who won class president? Oh, I'm sorry. I thought this was the student council elections for High School Musical.
The opening number was an insult to the chattering class. I do like that there was no ode to the offensive The Reader. Hugh Jackman was classy.
I had him muted, but someone won for Milk – he was wearing a white ribbon and he kept touching it during his speech. Glad I had him muted.
Dark Knight was terrible. It was the biggest disappointment of the year. Its ending was so absurd it will be difficult to follow up with a movie that's not even worse.
Animated feature – 2008. Rooting for Wall*E. Wall*E!!! YAAAY PIXAR!!! They so freakin' rule!!!
Writing as a Batman fan of almost 50 years, I say Dark Knight stunk. It was bad on so many levels that it is hard to know where to begin. And Ledger … anyone can play a psycho, it's the easiest possible role. The idea of making Batman a super-eavesdropper was criminal; making him want to be seen as a criminal is just stupid, and it cripples the future of the franchise. The idea that Batman would want to lionize a psychotic criminal like Harvey Dent just made it worse. May as well hand him over to Bane and be done with it.
Is there a way I can catch Rourke's speech without having to see anything else?
I wish. Only awards I care about were animated feature (Wall-E) and Best Supporting Actor (Heath Ledger). Soon as best supporting actor is announced, I'm switching the channel.
Gosh, folks! I just popped in for a minute to see how things are going. I had planned to turn on TV by now to follow this moronic piece of shit awards shoe with the rest of you but – things didn't turn out as I'd planned. You see, six months ago I wrote in my calendar that this morning was the day I would finally substitute the New York Times for toilet paper in my bathroom. THEN I would switch on the tv to watch the other asswipes kiss the "O's" ass (and kick Bush's) – but things took an unexpected turn. You see, I can't tell the difference between the Times and toilet paper and until I figure out which one is which, I simply haven't got a moment to spare for the Oscars. Toodles.
Hey Ernie, you're welcome up here anytime…LOL!!!
Was that skit with James Franco and that other guy supposed to be funny? The laughter sounded canned. Sorry, but it was retarded.
ugh, beyonce. sooooooo overrated.
Wow, the Oscars are ridiculously bad.
And all that jazz?
this musical montage might be the worst oscar moment in history.
here it comes – heath ledger. come on baby!
Here is the award I was looking for – Best Supporting Actor. HEATH LEDGER!!!!! YEAH!!! He was freaking awesome in that movie and so richly deserved that honor. Ok, I'm officially happy and done with watching this show. Goodnight everyone!
can i puke now? bill mah…. (dry heave).
Wow! How incredibly gutsy to challenge popular opinion. You my friend are a genius. What a terrible movie it was that 98% of the world saw 4 times in theatre.
Credit the audience, at least for not applauding maher's hate speech against religion.
The mere fact that your have been a Batman fan for 50 years speaks volumes about how valid your opinion is.
I gotta say I have been staying on to support the guys on BH but seeing Maher come on I have to take a break…
Ok, had to check comments. I'm a Catholic and am so glad to miss Maher. what was he even doing there to begin with???? The guy needs serious prayers.
Angela Jolie should have won for Visual Effects
Maher truly makes me want to puke.
BWHAHAHA!
I had to tear myself away after 2 eternally gratuitous minutes of self-glorifying indulgence. It was so much more interesting over @ HSN with Paula Abdul peddling her jewelry.
[wasn't it last year that there was alot of Gore-fying @ the Gorebully warm & fuzzy Org....err..Oscars.?]
It's Sid GAN-is, like "Paris". Not Sid GA-nis, like "Gayness" — Sheesh, Wolverine, at least learn how to pronounce these fellow's names….
"Slumdog" director Danny Boyle should have won this award more than a decade ago for "Trainspotting". The man is a genius on the level of Michael Curtiz and Sidney Lumet and the rest of the greats. . .
Sophia Loren is a GILF! And Shirley MacLaine just beamed in too!
Where can I get some of those plastic leaf bags they made Marr's suit out of?
The little man with the big head. "It's all about you BiIl"
Yes! there is a God!!
This night was just a collection of douchebags indulging themselves. I no longer feel torn when I watch pirated copies of all of their movies, in fact I feel like I'm doing the world a service by denying them my measley $8.
Hollywood, go %$#@ yourself.
Conservative Naval Officer veteran here; wife wanted to watch, and since she makes more than I do…:)
I was somewhat confused tonight. What I mean by that is: I expected to be much more pissed off than I was. Except for Sean Penn (who lost any interest I might have had after the somewhat amusing Spicolli back in Falcon and the Snowman), and the presence of Bill Mayer (although he if some no-name had said hyis lines, I don't think I would have noticed), I really didn't see/hear the mal-informed, gloating rhetoric I expected.
The last few years I couldn't watch, and those few moments I did, I was deeply offended. This year, most of the movies were nothing special, but I didn't see or hear the visceral hatred for America throughout the show as in previous years. Nor did I see much to applaud (although Jackman seems to be more talented than I gave him credit for).
So, two big disappointments, and one possible positive:
D1: Was really looking forward to getting pissed off; nothing much happened.
D2: The most impressive actors/actresses mentioned in the entire show were Charlton and Paul, both of whom passed away last year. Although Paul was more "progressive" the last 15 years, and Chuck was more "conservative", they were both men who both played characters who displayed, and lived in their own lives, American principals. They will both be sorely missed. One thing I've enjoyed in these shows the past 20-30 years (that I've been old enough to "remember them younger") is the role call and legacy of those passed away. Both these men deserved a dedicated montage; instead they both got 2-8 seconds. A missed opportunity to celebrate two different, yet both American and worthy of celebration, lives.
PP1: Perhaps in the absence of GWB, there may be a decrease in BDS (Bush derangement syndrome), and I won't have to get so pissed off at people I don't know amd will likely never meet.
In summary: No stellar movies or performances; and except for two complete idiots (instead of 20) was able to sit through the show. Still, the only money I gave to any of them last year was for Iron Man:)
Did anyone notice when they reviewed the film people who died in he past year that there was no applause for Charlton Heston? Unbelievable how these people are so cowed by the left they can't even acknowledge one of the most important stars of all time. The boycott of Heston was stark in its contrast with the excess for Paul Newman(although I did not find Newman to be offensive the way most of he Hollywood left is, Redford being a good example of the latter).
Not a big fan of hers, but I think that was her daughter
Conservative Naval Officer veteran here again;
yeah Mark I noticed the same thing you did; where was Sharpton when Chuck was marching for civil rights? AS I mentioned above; I disagreed with Paul on numerous issues, and agreed with Charles on some more, but not all. Neither one got what they deserved from this group of "peers" Rmeber Kate Hephern a few years ago? Her tribute went on for minutes ( also deserved)

Oh man!!! Did I miss the Oscars? That is such a disappointment. Well, maybe next year. …….. Then again….probably not.
