Tonight on Fox News: ‘Lt. Dan’ Thanks Troops In Iraq
by John NolteTonight at 9pm and midnight ET, the Fox News Channel airs a one-hour video diary of Gary Sinise thanking our troops in Iraq. The L.A. Times has more:
The actor will be featured in “On the Road in Iraq with Our Troops and Gary Sinise,” a documentary airing on Fox News at 6 p.m. PST Saturday. Culled from 26 hours of footage taken of a trip Sinise made to Iraq in July, the hour-long special traces his encounters with American soldiers across the country.
It was the fourth trip to the war zone for Sinise, who started traveling to U.S. bases with the USO after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. He said he agreed to let his friend filmmaker Jonathan Flora shoot footage of his trip last year to put a spotlight on the thousands of troops who remain in combat.
“Iraq is off the front page now and has been replaced with other things, so unless you are personally attached or involved with someone who has sacrificed, who is serving in the military, then you’re probably not too aware,” Sinise said in an interview.
Fox also plans to release the special on DVD.

I am truly thankful for men like Mr. Sinise who honor our troops and work so they are not forgotten. You can bet I will be watching!
Simply the most decent and sincere man I have met in Hollywood. His love for the troops is not an act. Thanks for what you do for them. They all tell me to tell you “hello and thanks for everything you do.” Hello and thanks for everything you do.
Thank you, Gary Sinise for your tireless support of our military.
I have never met Gary Sinese, but I have followed his works and feel pride that there is an American actor who has put it out there for our servicemen and women, not once but four tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.
As Chairman of Move America Forward, the country’s largest grassroots pro-troop organization, I salute Mr. Sinese and those who travel with him to entertain our heroes in harm’s way.
God Bless you,
Melanie Morgan
My admiration for Mr. Sinise AND our military men and women is very high. Thank you ALL for what you do! ALL OF YOU.
I applaud all the civilians who have visited the troops in Iraq, including Senator Al Franken and Henry Rollins.
How wonderful! (What a change from the usual Hollywood crowd!)
The man is a class act. The kind of old school Hollywood that once made the place respectable to the rest of the country – a man I’ve been able to point to as an example for my child. Obviously that doesn’t happen very often.
The Dan Band joining him, is great fun!
You go Gary! And yes, thanks to our troops for all they do.
Hey Gary:
You are a true Patriot. As someone who has loved ones in the military I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the things you have done for them. Thank you, thank you a thousand times thank you.
God Bless you sir.
Gary Sinise,
Watching the doc right now.
Gary you are a great American Patriot. I loved your special it was awesome. Thank you for all you do for our military. A special thank you to our military for all they do for our country. God speed to you Gary and to our troops.
Thanks Gary. So nice to see a genuine human being and actor going to Iraq and supporting our troops instead of just giving it lip service as most of Hollywood does so well.
Gary’s documentary tonight showed a side of him and the soldiers that most Americans have never seen. Gary is a great American and a true patriot in every sense of the word. May God bless you, your family, and the soldiers.
I was highly impressed with the tireless work Gary does. Just a couple of weeks ago on O’Reilly Factor he had a retrospect of Bob Hope’s Tours for the U.S.O. And Bill wondered who will pick up the mantle and continue to entertain the troops. Well after seeing ” On the Road with Gary Sinese” Well it looks as tho’ Gary will contiue. God Bless Him.
Bill mused that it’s a shame more Hollywood starlets do not go . [like Ann-Margaret, Connie Stevens, Janice Paige etc.] But it’s a shame more noted stars would join Gary. [Can you imagine if both Forrest Gump and Lt. Dan showed up the roof would come down!]
I am now a CSI NY fan.
After reading about Gary on another web site – Seraphic Secret – and an anecdote of a recent trip – I believe he is this generation’s Bob Hope. Bob made many trips in WW2 and Vietnam without fanfare or publicity – just went to entertain his troops. Gary will spend hours in the heat – and tired – just to make sure that every serviceman/woman who wants to see him gets that chance.
It is said that a definition of character is “doing what is right when nobody’s looking” Gary has it abundantly.
Thanks you Gary.
I’ve loved Gary Sinise since 8th grade. . . he just seemed to be made of sterner stuff than the rest of Hollywood off screen. . .Looks like I’m right.
*T*
While watching the show I cried tears of great joy; after so many long years of being forced to remain in the dark Mr Sinise brought to light the feelings of so many Americans who can relate to his love and admiration for our troops.
We all faithfully continue to send packages of love to our troops however never before have we all been able to connect our conscience on a national level.
Thank you Mr Sinise for bringing together this connection between those who serve and those who greatly honor their service.
This special was fantastic!
Sinise is “da bomb”, and if he’s not the originator of, than he’s surely the popularizer of one of my favorite geographical desciptives. Remember the pool scene in Reindeer Games? The description sums up Hollyweird to a “T”!
Two thumbs up for Gary Sinise!
The show brought me tears of joy seeing all those soldiers, marines, and airmen meeting with Gary and how he made them so happy. Just wonderful.
Gary Sinise is a credit to Hollywood. Wish that they all would take the time to entertain the troops and meet them.
Please don’t take this the wrong way, but wasn’t this really more of a “Gary Sinise” special than a “Support Our Troops” special? Am I the only one who noticed that? I felt like 90% of the special was people talking about Gary. Which makes me want to ask – What’s a film crew doing following him around? Remember when Sean Penn went to New Orleans to help the Katrina victims. He also brought a film crew. And he was attacked for it. And rightfully so. So what’s the difference here? Sure, the media picks these types of things up and gives them coverage, but that’s not what happened here. This was more of a look what a cool person Gary Sinise is… and by the way remember our troops. Didn’t Angelina Jolie get slapped for doing the same thing with the starving children in Africa? And she didn’t even bring her own film crew.
Sorry people. But I’m not buying this one. This appeared like opportunism at its finist hour.
Since William Peterson left CSI Las Vegas, CSI New York has become the SHOW! And Gary Sinese not only is the best actor in the lead of any of the CSI’s but he is also a bit of a dish. Just saying. Gotta give props.
And Ted, I know your a nontroop supporter, the subtext of what you just said proves it. Eitehr that or you are trying to rationalize what Mr. Sinese is doing in order to assuage your own guilt over not doing anything. As in if someone does something brave and cool for his country or other people in general and you have to slap them down maybe it says more about you? Maybe when Marlene Dietrich was being shot at by her own people while going to the front to entertain British and American troops in Europe during WW2 she was also having a bad case of opportunism. I think I remember hearing about how Bette Davis said the same things about MD. Man. And Ted next time you need to think real hard before you open your mouth.
Dear Stephanie,
I am a big troop supporter. I gave my opinion and I backed it up with facts. I guess you’re not okay with people thinking differently than you. Some liberals are the same way. If you don’t like something that I said, then be specific and constructive and don’t just start with the personal attacks. The truth is the Fox Special was just one person after another talking about how great Mr. Sinise is. Am I wrong about that? Why was it necessary to let the audience know about Steppnewolf Theatre, clips of Forrest Gump, all of his family? And I’m not saying that the troops didn’t benefit from what Mr. Sinise did. Of couse they enjoyed it. And to that extent it’s a good thing. But the fact is it was a 60 minute show focused on Gary and his life and the good things he does for people. And I just feel that using our soldiers for self-promotion is not such a good thing.
Wow! Gary Sinise is the “Bob Hope” of the 21st Century. That is very cool. America is in dire need of someone to take up that mantle.
Thanks Gary and even more thanks to the troops you are supporting!!
Watched this and was amazed! Too bad the rest of Hollywood cannot take a clue and make a real difference! Unfortunately, most are too shallow and self absorbed with what the tabloids are saying about them.
God bless Gary Sinese and the troops he works so tirelessly for!
I watched the special also and thought it was awesome. Seeing Gary Sinise spend his free time meeting and thanking our soldiers (the ones who are putting themselves in harm’s way for our freedoms) – just makes me feel prideful. You could tell how happy the military people were when they had the chance to meet Gary and/or attend a concert. God Bless you Gary – you are a Great American.
I would like to add that I am glad that there are still some people in Hollywood with Conservative values. I appreciate all of you and know how hard it is in your line of work to stand by your ideals.
