Big Hollywood Loves The Arts
by John NolteUntil the very end of his storied career, Jack Lemmon could still be heard whispering, It’s magic time, to himself before the filming of each new scene. More than our political views, and regardless of which part of the pop culture spectrum most engages us, what connects the Big Hollywood contributor is magic time, for we love the arts. And it’s a love that will manifest itself here in many forms, mainly through a sharing of our respective passions, but also criticism. Because whether it’s for the sake of the culture or simply customer bang-for-the-buck, we believe the arts must improve, but know that’s an impossibility until the discussion includes the ideas and ideals of everyone.
For my part, I’ll mostly talk movies. You’ll find reviews of the latest releases and any trap I can lay to hook you with an appreciation for the classics, including top-five lists to get you thinking about films and a recommendation for whatever classic gem might be found on Turner Classic Movies or The Fox Movie Channel.
Hollywood is much more than just “today.” It is a thing which reaches back a full century awaiting discovery and to help get us through as we plead our case here for a little more of that magic time.

Best of luck with your new site. If anyone can make it work, its you. Keep up the great work you’ve been doing.
Congrats on the new gig DH!
As a refugee from Dirty Harry’s Place, I say bonjour to John and all the regular commentators there. Johnny Ed’s Baby is no longer as it was mt screen name only for DH and dies with the site.
It’s great to see the TCM & Fox picks will stay – nice to keep some of the old furniture in the new house.
I look forward to checking in every day for my fix.
Ah, great to see ya again, John Nolte — or rather, Dirty Harry!
Congrats John, I know you will make a difference!
Love the site Mr. Nolte!
Congrats and best wishes on the new project.
Give ‘em hell, Harry.
There is lots to see here, nicely done. Its so big, like banging around in a new house before you get moved in. Not really home or very intimate yet, but we’ll get there.
Glad to hear the Top Fives will live on.
Great to see the new site. Battle on, John.
I’m just so happy to have followed your trail of breadcrumbs successfully.
Hail, Hail, the gangs all here.
We’re all proud of you here in Wisconsin. Well, maybe not all, but I sure am. Keep up the good work.
“that’s an impossibility until the discussion includes the ideas and ideals of everyone”
And too that end, I HOPE you and the rest of those particpating here on BH are successful. I’ll use a phrase from the show Leverage and turn it around on “them”.
Nurse: “But the world doesn’t work like that.”
Nate: “Then change the world.”
CHANGE on!
Looks great DH! Thanks for all your help — the boys at Threedonia!
Happy to see that we’ll keep getting Top 5 lists, Classics Picks of the Day, and reviews.
Sadly, however, Hubba Hubba has not been carried over from Dirtyharrysplace.
The vanguard charges on! Let the magic rise!
Already I don’t miss hubba hubba
) …
Well put John. One of the reasons I am excited for this site. Magic time indeed.
I love what you have done with the place. I really never expected Hubba to make it in this neighborhood. I have been reading all morning, good stuff.
Wonderful job, John. And nice to see some of the old neighbors in the new neighborhood.
Best of luck, Dirty Harry (are we still allowed to call you that? Or are you Mr. Nolte here?). Looks like a great site so far. I’m excited to see what the future brings.
John — Good opening flourish. And ‘Magic Time’, ironically, is the anecdotal reference from the great Mr. Lemon that I use to close my book, ‘ACTING & Other Flying Lessons’. (That’s how powerful i thought that lesson for the arts, and for life.) I congratulate you and Andrew and celebrate this new forum — and props to all those who have the intellectual curiosity.. and the balls… to participate in it.
God bless America. – GG
I was just getting used to the hubba hubba. Plus it was interesting to see the difference between the actresses of today and those from the earlier days of cinema.

Congratulations on the new gig.
Love the feel of the place.
On this first day, I’m very impressed with the writers chosen to participate in this new venture. Bravo to all for making it happen, most importantly, Andrew Breitbart.
I wish you much success for the future with ‘Big Hollywood’
It truly is ‘magic time’
Nice to see everyone made it here! Hopefully we left the trolls behind:)
Masha:
John was good at blocking the trolls that were a pest, especially those ‘comfort trolls’.
And the ones that do get through will have to contend with Stephanie. Hell hath no fury like a troll in her sights.
Migrating from your old site, John – WOW! You guys are FABULOUS! Good luck and looking forward to more!
I’d miss the Daily Hubba Hubba if John had included one for his female viewers.
Nice to see a fellow bearded manly man.
As conservatives, we also need to win back the beard. Beards used to be manly (see Little House on the Prairie and Grizzly Adams). Now every scrawny little professor of philosophy in his khaki shorts, long socks and sandals has one, and the beard is becoming a sign of femininity (see Sarah Jessica Parker).
Congrats on the new site. Between you, Steyn, and Gutfeld, this site just cut my normal blog browsing efforts by 67%!
This change will NOT, however, be reflected in my productivity at work.
John this is awesome. Love it! Truly! Having a blast! You have done well. All of you guys!
WOW—great to see so many fellow DHPers here.
I think the photos of some of these great and clever guys is a female hubba hubba for the mind.
IS the nice beard the result of too much work, too little time for grooming, Mr. Nolte? Nice photo, though—-a nice touch, too, to include photos.
As for standing with conservatives, props to Gary Graham—whether he is a conservative or not, he is obviously a free thinker who still makes his living in Hollywood—nice to see him here, too.
Good luck, DH!
Best of luck here to all involved. I hope the site very quickly moves from criticizing what’s wrong with Hollywood and the Arts and starts talking about what’s right in the arts.
Let’s have a lot of positive reinforcement for the ones you [all] think are doing it right to balance the deserved slams to the rest. Give us heroes to cheer as well as villains to boo.
Too many have indeed forgotten that it is all about making magic…money is no substitute….go get em DH.
I’m a lifelong fan of Jack Lemmon. Before I go onstage for a big show, I have been known to yell “fulminator mercury!” at the top of my lungs. Lemmon fanatics will get the reference.
Present…in Upper Case.
I’m going to love your column.
Congratulations on the launch, John.
Joe Weldon
Looking good so far!
Miss the gun.
But thank goodness, I don’t have to miss you, John. Site looks veeeeerrry interesting. Keep up the ‘magic’!
Still miss the gun. (DHS addicts will understand.)
I get it Carolyn, I sure do.
Weren’t we supposed to get Top Movies of 2008 list here? SOMEONE is slacking of on his first day on the new job:)
44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world……sigh………
Good to see everyone!
As far as the beard, these days I grow hair wherever I can.
Told you this place would rawk.
It’s magic time. Sweet new digs. Keep up the good work.
Love it!!!
