Hollywood, Nashville, The Gulf & Stereotypes
by Jeffrey JenaI was reading Pam Meister’s excellent piece here on Big Hollywood about Hollywood’s lack of attention to the continuing ecological disaster in the Gulf. In it she echoed my sentiments from a month ago when I wrote about the lack of Hollywood’s attention to the floods in the home of country music.

This would seem a disaster custom made for Hollywood liberal involvement. Look at the elements: A Big Ugly Corporation, the environment, animals suffering, and a chance to jump up and down and say we were right about off-shore drilling.
However speaking out on this disaster would perhaps mean taking a position where one might have to criticize the President. I have also noticed that most of Hollywood’s liberal elite’s never seem to take a position in opposition to the current administration. For example, how much outrage have we heard about Guantanamo lately? Answer: none. How many anti-war demonstrations have we seen since President Obama escalated the war in Afghanistan? Answer: very few. Now that I’m thinking about it, how much media coverage do we see about far left true believers like Cindy Sheehan who are still protesting since the new administration took over? Answer: darn little.
Since drawing attention to the situation in the Gulf of Mexico would also draw attention to the lack of leadership by the President, Hollywood has been laying low. However, I believe there’s another reason: Hollywood hates the South!
Why, would liberal Hollywood types hate the South? Because they are indulging in an out of date stereotype about the people who choose to live there. You see, Hollywood liberals get most of their information about life from the movies they make. They think of the South as the South from 1956. In their world anyone who is white, conservative and from the South is obviously a Bible-thumping, uneducated, red neck, racist with a white robe and hood stashed away somewhere nearby. When it comes to politics Southern States are deep red except for New Orleans, an area worthy of their charity. Think I’m wrong? Look at the imbalance between Hollywood’s help to The Big Easy and the rest of the area affected by Katrina.
In the Hollywood stereotype, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi are the center of the GOP stronghold called “the solid South” and that area deserves whatever karmic destruction is sent their way. Maybe when the oil starts hitting Florida in mass quantities they will begin to show up to clean some pelicans. Then again, that is the state that cheated Al Gore out of the White House.
Hey, speaking of Vice President Green Jeans, where has he been through all this. Isn’t he the Nobel Prize winning expert on the environment?

When the floods happened in Nashville, I thought it was strange we heard no offer of assistance from Hollywood and as the oil has continued to flow and is now ruining the beautiful Gulf coast and destroying the lives of all who are dependent upon it, NOTHING. I think you are correct, they don't care about the South, with the exception of New Orleans.
If this oil leak was off the coast of California, and it was the Farallon Islands in danger instead of the Gulf coast barrier islands, the constant roar from the envirotards would be deafening.
Great observation Jeffrey, and something that occurred to me early on.
We will remember come November, and instead of a movie…read a book!
"You see, Hollywood liberals get most of their information about life from the movies they make. They think of the South as the South from 1956. Odd how they leave "Democrat" out of that picture.
Cindy Sheehan is a troubled nut, but I've got to give her credit, she's real, she's sincere. She's everything the left claims to be, but isn't. She also now knows who the enemy is (the left's own Charlie Gibson on ABC, 18 August 2009): “It’s such a sad story…you look at somebody like that and you think here’s somebody who’s just trying to find some meaning in her son’s death. And you have to be sympathetic to her. Anybody who has given a son to this country has made an enormous sacrifice, and you have to be sympathetic. But enough already.” Yup, thrown under the bus.
But it's not a surprise. Party ueber alles for the left (since they are Godless). Rather than face the truth, they support the lie no matter how many suffer or die. The left throws the Gulf under the bus. The left throws conservative minorities under the bus. The left throws the victims of Mao and Stalin under the bus (and Che, Castro, Chavez, et. al.). What do you expect from a mindset that says killing the unborn is a "reproductive right"?
You can't be surprised at this Jeffrey. Anyone that doesn't think like they do doesn't deserve help. I can picture Sean Penn walking past a burning house with a baby crying inside just because it has a Bush-Cheney sign out front….
I'm reading John Locke's 'An Essay Concerning Human Understanding'.
The Bible forces one to care about others, to help others, to know we are all God's children.
But Hollywood is free from that, so… they get to pick and choose, based on… mmmm…
You know, there are a lot of blacks in the South and a lot of Cubans in Florida. They'll certainly be negatively impacted by what's happening in the Gulf. If we apply the Left's logic there can be only one possible reason Hollywood has been silent about what's going on. They're all a bunch of racist bigots.
Damn!… I didn't know James Carville played the banjo!
ROTFL!
I would echo these comment about unfounded prejudices – BUT, here in SC we've had a spate of OMG – did you hear about:
1) Mark Sandford
2) The "raghead" comment
3) The Nikki Haley rumor-monging
4) The Dems' candidate, Green
It's enough to make a Yankee transplant's head spin.
The only interest anyone in Hollywood would have in this would be the possibilities of making a movie about it.
A disaster movie. Starring that kid from the "Transformers" pictures, Alec Baldwin, Susan Sarandon, Sean Penn, Ed Begley Jr, Ashley Judd, with Meagan Fox as the "love interest." (Sorry, Ashley). Cameos by Al Gore, Sting and Bruce Springsteen.
Basic plot: Bush and Cheney are angry that their oil futures aren't as valuable as they expected. To start a shortage, they decide to disable a Gulf rig. Instead of sending some experts out, Bush does the job himself (hence, the ineptitude of the results).
Note: here insert CGI explosions and destruction of the rig, use stock footage from "Armageddon" if necessary.
The country is outraged as the oil leaks into the Gulf. Suddenly, it's discovered that the presence of oil in the Gulf waters is affecting the formations of hurricanes, by making them more powerful due to the "fueling" nature of the oil.
Note 2: here insert CGI images of dead fish and wildlife floating in the water, followed by hurricanes forming in the Gulf in a matter of minutes, with total destruction of the entire American South. Show church steeples and Bibles floating in the water after the storms. Use stock footage from "The Perfect Storm" and "The Day After Tomorrow" if necessary.
Main characters (led by Baldwin and Penn) discover Bush-Cheney plot, head to Crawford and wherever Cheney is hiding to get revenge.
Note 3: here insert CGI car chases, exploding Texas ranch houses, AK-47 battles with Secret Service agents, Meagan Fox "accidentally" firing shotgun at Cheney while hunting. Use stock footage from "The French Connection," "The Bourne Identity" and that news video from the Waco massacre, if necessary.
Finale: long pull shot of Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt on Gulf beach, soaping down pelicans with Dawn dish washing soap. Final line: Springsteen turns to the others and whispers hoarsely:
"We were wrong, man…we were wrong about the nukes, man…"
I have way too much time on my hands.
Note to federal authorities: the references to the Secret Service, Vice President Cheney and shotguns are *satire*. Thank you.
Hollywood Liberals = Hypocrites = Lamebrain Lying Leftists Living in Capitalist Luxury
Funny, I don't remember Charlie Gibson or anyone else saying that back in 2006 or '07. Must not have been listening that day.
Pretty close resemblance. Yikes!
Green doesn't pretend to be anything other than what he is: someone with a criminal record, lives with his parents, no real political experience. In that respect he's more honest than a lot of politicians these days.
I had some of the best BBQ ever in SC and the best service.
Maybe. But if it had one of those "Marriage=Man+Woman" posters, he would probably just stand there and watch it burn.
Bible Belt, military bases, Louisianians, Mississippians and Alabamians joined on vacation by more Louisianians, Mississippians, and Alabamians…yep, I think it's pretty clear why Hollywood is steering clear.
try the que in Memphis or St. Louis, love em all but think these are the best.
They only care about themselves. Since there's no profit for the image, no show. I'm not surprised in the least.
The only reason Hollywood helped during Katrina was to highlight and exaggerate any mistakes made by the Bush administration. Many of those myths still live on today. There is no way in hell Hollywood is going to help in Nashville or the Gulf because Obama would simply look worse than he already does. Hollywood may be dumb but they aren't stupid.
Impressive! I'm finishing up the current issue of Reason. Current article a scathing condemnation obliterating people who are patting Justice Stevens on the back, claiming he was a champion of freedom.
Agreed. Cindy Sheehan is a very sad story. When she should have been seeking peace, the left used her as a prop. When she ceased to be of value, the left dumped, like I knew they would. They always do.
I pray she gets the help she needs to find peace.
"you look at somebody like that and you think here’s somebody who’s just trying to find some meaning in her son’s death. And you have to be sympathetic to her. Anybody who has given a son to this country has made an enormous sacrifice, and you have to be sympathetic."
What a load of bullshit. Cindy Sheehen was a kook left-wing activist long, long before Iraq; her husband and children (including Casey) repudiated her over it, and she did everything in her power to prevent Casey from enlisting. This "middle class mom pushed to activism by Bu$Hitler" was nothing but raw propaganda.
The Bible forces no one to do anything. It's the ideas within that compel people to love one another.
Of course they're bigots. I used to be on the left. Everything they claim to be for they are against, and everything they claim to be against they are for. That's why they come off as nuts. The are.
And because I kept pointing that out, I got the boot. So here I am.
Next time a modern liberal tries to prove they aren't racists because they have friends who happen to be black, they are telling you they have token minority friends. I don't have friends who happen to be black. I have friends.

Obama is such a 'green idealogue' he'd rather see the gulf fill completely up with oil. Today it is reported that Obama and Salazar lied about a report by experts on a moratorium on deep water drilling. They are so 'busted'. Obama has no connection to the south other than 'Deliverance'. He probably thinks all southerners are racists, ala Jimma Carter- the peanut huxter politician. Both hate Israel. They have a lot in common. Arrogant, paper lions, ill tempered behind the shit eating grins. Pro Islam, weak on defense, economic baffoons, leftists with no backbones. Other than that, great leaders. . . .
Not exactly on-topic about the Gulf, but just as an aside: That kid with the banjo in the picture? Even HE has a greater grasp of basic economics tna Obama or the average Democrat.
I think it looks an awful lot lot my friend's kid. We're from NY.
I love good BBQ. It can be hard to find up here in NY. Normally it sells out pretty fast. I've been trying for years to figure how how to work a smoker. I need to upgrade to a better design. I can't get the barrel smoker to work right.
Think you should be looking for an agent.
And Obama would have been camped out there 'kicking ass' since day one.
While we are at it I'm reading "Marine! The Life Of Chesty Puller" by Burke Davis, I assume no description is needed.
You beat me hands down. Never heard of the hero till I started hanging out here.
Fun and educational!
I couldn't agree more and it's not just Hollywood. The DC, NYC, LA, SF elite also have nothing but disdain for the South. Of course, a lot of that is mutual.
Hollywood has spewed out plenty of its own icky sludge for years.
Thank you. I am a native Southerner living in Los Angeles and the stereotypes are amazing! I keep my mouth shut much of the time when people just have to mention this or that about the South, politics, or imitate my accent (which they would never do to someone from another country). Most people do fail to realize that the South was a stronghold of Democrats until the early 90s.
I wonder if it has ever occured to her that she is disrespecting her son's memory and her son's sense of honor? I hope her son is in a better place where he has no knowledge of what she is doing.

Could Hollywood win this one either way? If a group of stars went there you'd say they were just grandstanding. And while you might wish it, they're not going to tie bricks to their feet and aim themselves to plug the hole in the ocean floor. If they tried to do a benefit, you'd say why the heck are they trying to get money from individuals when it's BP alone that should be making restitution for the damage it's caused (which is what I think). But then there's not much presence by conservative Hollywood either is there- where's Gary Sinese, John Voight, Steven Baldwin, Patricia Heaton, Kelsey Grammar (oh wait–he's prob. revving up for Sunday's Tony Awards)? Has the Nashville music community done much? Or major league sports?
I'd go with "inspire" rather than "compel".
I'm following up with Friedrich Nietzsche's 'Beyond Good and Evil'. How's that for ying and yang?
You could extend that theme to all kinds of facts – where were the "feminists" when Clinton was demanding BJs from Lewinski? Or tearing down other women who tried to "expose" him (ohhh, bad pun)
Agreed. Inspired is a much better term.
Beats me with out a doubt. Suddenly I feel a little silly for having Eric Clapton's autobiography on deck.
To be fair, my brother loaned it to me and is insisting I read it.
A book that everyone who wants to know who these people are that we're up against should read Eric Hoffer's 'The Ordeal of Change'.
Come on, you guys, you're messin' with the stereotype again…Everyone knows that conservatives don't "read!" Me, I'm still working my way through the "Patriot's History", and waiting for the Flynn novels my daughter promised from Mother's Day, and is yet to deliver!
Thanks for the tip. But I already know exactly what kind of people we're up against. I used to be one of them.
I know the playbook, I refined a couple of chapters myself. I know their aims, their goals and their tactics. And my mission is to blow their game wide open by explaining what they're doing to everyone here at the big sites.
Hollywood hates The South? No kidding. They also hate the Midwest, most parts of the Southwest, Alaska and any place in the mountains that doesn't have a trendy ski chalet. Bascailly Hollywood likes California and New York. New York City that is. I've heard upstate New york has people who cling to religion and guns and stuff.
That depends on the translation you are reading and the attitude you approach it with.
I have not read the Essay on Human Understanding, but I have read The Second Treatise on Goverment along with Beyond Good and Evil, plus quite a few more.
Yes it is, great read so far. It is great here, I've also learned quite a few interesting things here.
I quite often have a lot of spare time at work and can get lost in Wikipedia jumping from page to page reading lots on history and other topics. If I find something peak my interest I'll try to find out more, maybe buy or borrow a book about the subject or person, I was looking up Marines and his name is always mentioned as the Marines Marine. Plus after seeing him on The Pacific I thought I'd get a book on him to find out more, plus he has the best quotes of nearly anyone.
"All right, they're on our left, they're on our right, they're in front of us, they're behind us…they can't get away this time."
"We’re surrounded. That simplifies our problem of getting to these people and killing them." — November 1950, during Chosin Reservoir campaign
My mentor, who I found out later, was a NOC company man, gave me Eric Hoffer's 'True Believer', when I was six. His father was a 'White Russian' who was killed by Stalin. My own Father, who barely escaped Communisum, was a lifetime member of the NRA.
It's the Kaufmann translation. I usually read a lot of books about military history or tactics, Sun Tzu to the SAS Handbook. I've probably got a book on every martial art out there. I'm a practitioner of Krav Maga, myself.
The line I heard form Chosin was "we're surrounded, and out number ten to one. We have them right where we want them."
My Dad was a government employee (garbageman), union organizer (they got paid more than any other crew in the county), and a back room guy in the democratic party.
Of course back in those days, the democratic party was a lot different than it is today. That's why I like Ronald Reagan's line, I didn't leave the democratic party, they left me.
And there is another quote that rings oh so true. Only a slave can truly appreciate freedom.
If you live in NYC and we can get together and discuss I'll probably get emotional.
The Kaufmann translation is the way to go. They are the ones I prefer.
I started with military history before moving into general history, and then general everything. I love Clausewitz.
I teach Okinawan karate, Isshin Ryu, and refer to sources on others for as much inspiration as I can get.
That was <sniff> so beautiful!
I agree with those who point out the Obama connection. The Beautiful People don't want to make their boy look bad by criticizing the government's response to the disaster.
Or maybe they've just noticed that he hasn't done anything about Iraq or Afghanistan or Gitmo or the Patriot Act or the GWOT or the crappy economy – all those icky things that are Bush's Fault(tm) – and so they haven't bothered asking him to.
Thank you, man.
>bowing head, placing grateful hand on WarPossum101's shoulder<
Thank you…
I took up Judo when I was a teenager, then Taekwondo when I got out of the military. I'm semi-retired from PMC work and was taught Krav Maga by a friend from the Institute. It suits an old Warhorse like me. Never was good at form, but a natural when it came to fighting.
I was always better at forms, my drive to understand how things work. I can fight, but I spent so much time getting myself under control as a youth I have a strong aversion to letting it go now. My friend is the fighter, so the two of us make a good team to train kids.
My teenage nephew had a control Problem. He was a much better person after he got his black belt in Taekwondo. He tried to show his Uncle how capable he was. I let him show off a little form, before I bounced him around the backyard.
BTW, a great book is 'The Tao of Self-defense' by Scott Shaw.
I was a Democrat campaign worker when I was a teenager.
…….."I was a Democrat campaign worker when I was a teenager"
I have been saying for years !
We are all born Liberal but most grow up Right !
I have noticed now that the Left, who actually use "code" defines much of what the Right says as being in
"code" to the point that is they can say and interpret anything to the point of being absolututely Orwellian,
note..I heard the women on the view, distilled through Hannity's show, do those very things with two different topics. They are so incredibly bigoted and hypocritical
Get a BIG Green Egg
And practice …practice…practice
Nobody can teach another about BBQ
It is shown to you then you perfect it
Temp and moisture are key tho
Heh. Yes, I had to "explain" to several kids that older and mellower does not mean feebler.
I'll add that to my list to look for. One of my favorites is Living the Martial Way by Forrest Morgan.
Not sure exactly what a big green egg is. But I'll google it.
I think my main problem is with the fire. I had a Webber barrel smoker and was using authentic charcoal. But it burns pretty quick, so I had to keep taking the meat off the heat to clean out the ash, reload charcoal, get it going, and by the time is was ready, the food had cooled down.
I'm thinking one of those contraptions with the smoke box hanging off the side so messing around with the flame won't drastically affect the meat's temperature.
You get the chance, pick up a copy of "Fortunate Son", the Pulitzer Prize winning auto bio by Lew Puller Jr., Chesty's son, who was horribly wounded in Vietnam. I read it when it came out in '91, then a few years later I was in the library and saw the title and thought I should read it again. I checked it out and got home and had no more than opened the book when the radio news reported he had killed himself.
If it will make you feel better, I'll admit to reading both Hulk Hogan and Mackenzie Phillips' autobios in the last few months.
That does make me feel better, thanks!
Reminds me of an interview I read with Jerry Garcia years ago. The band toured 3 times a year, and the off time was vacation. On one of those breaks he was hanging around with some friends and some asked what Robert Hunter had done during the time off. Robert Hunter used to write the lyrics to Garcia's songs.
Hunter replied he'd spent it translating Faust from German to Latin or some other language. Garcia said he as glad they didn't ask him, because he'd just built a couple of remote controlled model cars.
[...] silence over the floods in Nashville and the Gulf oil spill as proof. Jeffery Jena makes the case here. PermaLink | Rebel Yells (0) | Trackback/Pingback [...]
I'm not even sure they care about New Orleans. I think they only cared about embarrassing Bush. With Haiti, no one remotely thought that Obama was responsible. With Nashville, since the MSM did not report on it, Hollywood had no idea it even happened. I would bet that simple, regular folks from Montana don't even know anything about the Nashville floods.
Besides, these charity telethons need to be spread further apart to give the celebs a greater exposure for the buck. Schedule too many of them and it waters down the audience. My guess is that the next benefit won't be until Harry Reid is looking for a new job. The celebs will descend on Vegas to lend Harry a helping hand.
Thanks for the tip, I'd heard a bit about him, pretty sad. I'll have to put it in the queue!
I'm only up to 1937 when he's getting married, so I'll have to wait to confirm any quotes, especially those on wikipedia.
I too have noticed this. "Oh they're not saying out right, but it's all coded, implied!"
And they're saying we're the ones wearing tinfoil hats. Yeesh.
Or in the Long Island Sound or Chesapeake Bay…
Floods and oil leaks are not glamourous enough for the hollywood types.
Yep, get used to it. That's the way it is.
Lie the fake referees in championship wrestling.
It's all settled before they take the stage.
It may be a false quote, but it still rocks!
I think it would have to be true or close to the truth. Either way it one of those stories that is too good to double check!
I am afraid of massive voter fraud nationwide, they have the mechanism in place to say and DO anything! I'm keeping a little digital camera on my person..and if I witness misdeeds I'll expose them and their lies to the light of day!
Can you blame them? I live in Tennessee and it's just a bunch of rednecks. A majority of people in this state deserve "fly over" status.
The Gulf Coast is not the Côte d'Azur, Malibu, Hyanis (sp?), or St Tropez. I mean, whom among those who are anybody would vacation on the Gulf Coast? I mean, really…!
