Stand Up Notes From Flyover Country: The Screen Actors Guild Awards
by Jeffrey JenaI’ve been a member of The Screen Actors Guild for almost thirty years. They spend my dues on politically correct crap I don’t agree with and to my knowledge have never supported a political candidate for whom I would vote. A lot of the better known members scream for a government takeover of health care but do not pressure the union to adopt a policy which would allow actors who work less to still have access to the union plan. At the same time, thousands of paid-up members continue to chip in with their dues to support richer members’ benefits. Exactly the opposite of what they would like the government to do.

A lot of my slack jawed knuckle-dragging conservative friends ask me why I remain a member. If I ever want to work in film or television again I have to be a member. The “art” of television and film-making is a closed shop. I do get a really cool card to carry around in my wallet and I get to vote on the SAG Awards every year. Getting to vote on the SAG Awards has a great perk; I get screener copies of a number of the nominated movies. I got “Up in the Air” and “Precious” today. Most of them are films I would never pay $12 to see in a theater. I usually see a lot of the nominated films during downtime on ships or airplanes. For example, I recently saw “Inglourious Basterds” on a plane. I thought the first scene was compelling and then the movie disintegrated into mess which couldn’t decide if it was a farce or a Sam Peckinpah homage.
I understand that the vast majority of folks in my profession don’t agree with me when it comes to politics or art. Many of the films that get nominated for awards make less money than General Motors, and that isn’t easy. Also, in Awardville, making money and entertaining people are almost grounds for disqualification from receiving accolades unless, like James Cameron, you throw in an anti-American undercurrent. Then, of course, there is the question of values in films.
The liberal elites that run the entertainment industry tend to “pooh-pooh” films that have what they consider to be pedestrian middle-class values. Apple pie, motherhood, traditional marriage, fidelity and patriotism are a one-way ticket to being ignored. But… Putting a gay couple, a woman with a stripper pole or a heroin problem or anything that says America is the bad guy at the center of your film usually means a seat up front at the Kodak Theater in April.
This is probably why the two best films I saw in 2009, “Up” and “The Blind Side” got a total of one SAG Award nomination. I don’t think we’ll see a lot of support at the DGA or at the Academy Awards for these or any other “family” films, either.
The best award will come when they’re released on DVD and thousands of us out here in Flyover Country watch them at home.

"“Up” and “The Blind Side” got a total of one SAG Award nomination."
"Up" was a cartoon. S.A.G. ballots don't include voice-over work.
And, odds are, "Up" is going to be nominated for Best Picture.
we, too have retained SAG status…
for the same inexplicable reasons Mr Jena elucidates. Namely a hope that Hollywood will become friendly to other values rather than secular nihilism.
Fat chance you say?
Well, one can always Hope for Change. And not from our dollar, either…
"Putting a gay couple, a woman with a stripper pole or a heroin problem or anything that says America is the bad guy at the center of your film usually means a seat up front at the Kodak Theater in April."
I can't think of very many films that fall into any of these categories. "Brokeback Mountain" had "a couple of gays." But, oddly enough, after winning more precursors than any other film, it didn't win Best Picture.
Hmmn. I guess the hand that giveth, also taketh away.
Stripper pole? Like … Demi Moore's "Striptease" bomb. "Powder Blue" going straight to DVD?
For the reasons named in this article, I almost never go to a movie — or buy one — any more. I gave up on Hollyweird years ago!
P.S. …and I haven't missed a thing!
I have to agree in part with VInce above. The America = bad guy stuff I understand but the mere presence of gay characters or strippers or drugs doesn't necessarily mean the film isn't conservative, or that there isn't a conservative message buried somewhere.
Now as to why films with all that get the awards attention, yeah, that's a valid criticism.
I thought it was "Film Actors Guild"?
"any other film" … in history.
Jeffrey, I'm so sorry you must sit through that crap.
On the other hand, it's a win for me! You get to take the punishment – and I don't.
With the "Best Animated Film" category, and even with the 10 nominations this year for Best Picture, I'd say the odds are better than 50-50 that "Up" remains left in the side category in favor of some lesser selection.
Well, we won't know until nominations are announced, but, as of right now, it's being short-listed for the top 10 by several notable Oscar prognosticators.

I think some posters here have misinterpreted the statement regarding a gay couple or stripper pole….Jeff was simply stating that any film portraying a traditional couple or something as banal as a wholesome American pie existence is ignored by the Guild come awards time. Hollywood has worked hard to make film after film portraying the traditional couple as either ignorant bigots who cannot accept anyone who chooses a different path or people who are really hiding deep dark secrets by pretending to be Christians. Movies that focus on a gay couple or a stripper pole are NOT necessarily anti-conservative, but they almost always show them to be an oppressed minority taking the brunt of hardship from – you guessed it – the traditional American family
I'm sorry….but of all the awards shows…this is the one I have the least interest in watching (which if you compare it to the amount of interest I have in watching ANY award shows…it would rank somewhere above fishing shows and below paint drying). I would rather have a 100,000 paper cuts on my face and then get hit with a bucket of rubbing alcohol than sit through 3 hours of actors patting themselves on the back and telling us just how awesome they think we should think they are.
I don't care how people who enjoyed "The Blind Side" vote.
I DO care that people who enjoyed "The Blind Side" are permitted to operate complicated/dangerous machinery, up to and including motor vehicles, and that i'm very likely sharing the road with them
Show me two designated drivers to hitch home with, one drunk off his ass and the other claiming to have like "The Blind Side," and I'm going with the drunk – at least he started out competent…
I liked The Blind Side to a degree, and I'll remember to visit you in the hospital or at your graveside.

I don't know about the rest of ya but Jeffrey seems to have the best of both worlds. He gets free "screener copies of great and not so great films, he gets to sit at his kitchen and fill out his Screem Actors' Guild Ballet and he catches most these nominated films on his downtown (in planes and boats) Damn must be nice to spend time on a big vacation boat where you can flash your "I'm in the Business" card to all the babes and still consider yourself a regular Joe from flyover country. I'm not makin' mean'er nuthin.. I'm just envious
Is it possible to simply state you don't like the movie rather than insult those who do?
"If I ever want to work in film or television again I have to be a member."
A guy moves to New York to open a donut shop. A suit comes by, says: "This is a nice shop you got here. You wanna keep it, you gotta give me a cut. Otherwise, you ain't never gonna find customers here." That's called extortion.
A guy goes to Hollywood, wants to act. A suit comes by, says: "Nice skills you got there. You wanna get to use 'em, you gotta give me a cut. Otherwise, you ain't never gonna find a role here." That's called "joining a guild."
The mafia needs to learn that terminology.
The America = bad guy stuff I understand but the mere presence of gay characters or strippers or drugs doesn't necessarily mean the film isn't conservative, or that there isn't a conservative message buried somewhere.
Bad Lieutenant probably being the most extreme example.
I lost interest in any of these awards shows. hollywood giving hollywood pats on the back with a political slant … whats to like?
Thank God I live in a country where I have cable and don't actually HAVE to watch this kinda crap.

As much as Hollywood seems to want to produce these anti-American flicks to prove their political loyalties, they don't seem to be eager to give them awards. As far as I know, "Grace Is Gone", "Rendition", "Redacted", and "Lions for Lambs" were not nominated for any Academy Awards. "In the Valley of Elah" received a Best Actor nomination for Tommy Lee Jones, but that was the same year as "No Country for Old Men", so Jones was probably getting a collective nomination for both films.
"The Wrestler" comes to mind with regard to stripper pole….No?
If only it were that easy to join SAG.
It's more like: You open a donut shop. Suit walks by and tells you how nice it is and tells you that have to pay up to get customers……and then says in order to pay him you have to get in through a friend of his or play the lottery to get the opportunity. He also tells you that you'd better hurry up because the fee to get in his good graces are about to go up again.
Then that guy screws up royally losing half of your business to another guy who does basically the same thing but gets you inferior prices in the process. So now you have to pay this guy to survive as well.
And people wonder why so much talent in this town goes undiscovered.
Thank you for not being literal and understanding the larger meeting.
"Up" is going to do exceptionally well in the awards season. An outspoken martyr of cinematic thought, you are not.
"Up" will be nominated for Best Picture.
you were wrong. just as i expected.
