Stand Up Notes From Flyover Country: Pressure ‘Law & Order’ Advertisers
by Jeffrey JenaI’ve noticed a lot of my brothers and sisters on the right are up in arms at Law & Order: SVU after last week’s episode. I did not see the whole episode in question but did see a clip where a character played by John Larroquette mentions three well know conservative talk show hosts and calls them a cancer on the land.

Before I get rolling, in the spirit of full disclosure I will admit to being a Law & Order junkie. My DVR is full of my favorite Law & Order: Criminal Intent episodes, which is by far the strongest of the three series. I will also admit that in my mind Law & Order: SVU is to the Law & Order brand what Deep Space Nine was to the Star Trek brand. It is a weak cousin that may have been spreading the brand a little too thin.
I know I have said this before, as a conservative if you start watching and listening only to things you agree with politically then we are stuck with Magnum P.I. reruns, Ben Stein movies, The 700 Club and Toby Keith CDs. I was just about to type the word “records” but I remembered this is the 21st century. Not that there is anything wrong with any of those choices, I just want a wider selection.
So, back to Law & Order, a lot of the chatter I have been hearing is true. Yes, Dick Wolf and a lot of other Hollywood types are far left politically. Yes, they often put their politics into their work, many times without balance. Yes, it is unfair that they verbally smack Bill O’Reilly and others around and misrepresents their positions.
This week’s episode of the original Law & Order had some material that I found more offensive than a little name calling. The show which was a riff on the Big Government expose of ACORN. First the police use an unlawful search and seizure against a “conservative” guy because he doesn’t bow to their demands to be questioned. Later in the episode, every time Detective Lupo, played by Jeremy Sisto, asks him a question he mocks his political beliefs by pretending he is talking to “the government” on his cell phone. There is also a mocking reference to the “Tea Parties last summer.” When the “conservative’s” friends show up to protest his wrongful arrest they are depicted as a group of gun toting, flannel shirt wearing, poorly educated, rednecks. Yep, that’s me alright.
The question is this; how should conservatives react to this? I think we should take a page from the playbook of the far left and try to bring some economic pressure to bear on the advertisers of NBC. The left has started strong campaigns against both Dr. Michael Savage and Glenn Beck trying to silence them by hurting them economically. There was even the recent laughable “revelation” that Glenn Beck gets paid by his sponsor Goldline. So let’s try to do the same. Here are two big ad buyers on NBC; McDonald’s and American Express. Let’s start by dropping an e-mail to both companies politely asking them to stop buying ads on NBC and see what kind of response we get.

Have never watched an entire episode of any of the L & O franchise, so count me in on the boycott.

I can't boycott McDonald's. I love their filet-o-sea kitten sandwich.
How do we find out which are the local advertisers and which are national? There are many local businesses in my town that purchase rotating schedules on the NBC nightly lineup, and have little say during which program their ad will run. The same with many national adversiters as well. Do you know of adversiters that SPECIFICALLY request to be aired during L&O? I think we need to be sure we boycott the right people.
You're daft! Far from being a "weak cousin that may have been spreading the brand a little too thin," Deep Space Nine was actually the best of the Star Treks. Perhaps you were thinking of Voyager?
I don't want to turn this into a Star Trek thread but I wholeheartedly agree!
You can boycott McDonald's and eat Burger King's Sea Kittens instead.
NERDS!
;>
Gotta agree. It was the only one that departed somewhat from the "Roddenberrily correct" version of the future. Hence the characters and conflicts (and conflicted characters) had a little more oomph. The other series were like watching a bunch of Puritans flying around in space showing everyone how enlightened they were.
We've watched L&O since the beginning. I emailed Dick Wolfe and told him we're out. He is over the top.
Dear Advertisers – keep it up, we're with you all the way.
I deleted Law and Order and SUV from my DVR the night that I saw that garbage. The whole episode, it insulted my intelligence with idiotic stereotypes of Conservatives. They portrayed them as gun slinging mindless idiots. The whole who was spent ripping on Conservatives and then at the end, it ends up the guy wasn't a conservative and he killed the children and couldn't wait to kill the other anchor babies. So, in the end, they can claim that they didn't make the conservative the bad guy but spent the hour making them look like idiots.
I've had enough! Law and Order also had a Conservative rip fest as well and then there was Bones, and I feel it coming to House as well. Pretty soon, I will just switch to books.

Oh indeed, the real power of the conservative movement is money. If we can coalesce, and boycott companies that sponsor leftist tripe it will go away. The difference between us and liberals we can actually buy things. Board rooms across America would be shaking in their boots. If you’re a business owner fire your liberals first as taxes and fees rise, deliver them to their Messiah. Boycott!

Never saw Law and Order but I just had the same problem of PC stupidity with last night episode of NCIS (muslim crap and all that)which added to comments about Rush L.in a previous one has made me say goodbye to this show.
I wouldn't know who to pressure.
Stopped watching the show years ago. If voting with our viewing isn't enough, what is?
Sea Kittens, lol!!
"as a conservative if you start watching and listening only to things you agree with politically then we are stuck with Magnum P.I. reruns, Ben Stein movies, The 700 Club and Toby Keith CDs."
I love all the others but when did toby kieth become a conservative, as far as i know he was prety suportive of the great one. He was also at the great one nobel peace prize ceromony, remember the one were he is making slanted eyes that pissed off all the asians. He is a great singer but what is a conservative Democrat
CSI is right on their heels. First episode these season centered around the cafe "Whitehouse Burgers" w/ a sign on the side saying "YES YOU CAN". In addition to the racists twists.
If fish, according to PETA, are sea-kittens, then what are shrimp? Sea-Gerbils? Here is a link to the incredible stupidity for the uninitiated. Be warned it will make you hate PETA even more. As if that's a bad thing right?
http://www.peta.org/sea_kittens/
I'm doing my part.
Two years ago I turned off the cable t.v. in order to try and read more. Now, after two years of local channels and their miserable programming, I'm about to give my set away…and read even more.
I haven't been to a movie theater in over three years…or is it four? I've even stopped renting DVDs.
And I will encourage others to do the same.
Yeah, DS9 had by far the deepest themes of the series. The captain was downright conservative sounding at times, and was in no way to afraid to drop a little ass-kick to make his point. Hell, the series basically revolves around a war against aliens who want to bring peace through fascist unity throughout known space.
How about toss your television in the dumpster instead of this futile effort to "pressure" advertisers?
No? Just can't quit the pipe, can you, America?
This is like asking the crack makers to produce healthier crack.
You'll do anything if only you can keep praying at the American Altar.
As America dies, even its conservatives are glued this hideous box.
Afraid to let go. Rationalize all you want. Just like addicts.
I try to not watch anything on NBC and that includes Sunday Night Football because of that mindless sea bisquit Keith Oldbermann whom I cannot even stand the sight of. I would rather French kiss a Komodo dragon that look at him, And that would be fatal if I did kiss that dragon because of the bacteria in its mouth is lethal !! I quit than network years ago and also quit MSNBC first after what they did to Savage, Then after what they did to Imus. Now I only watch the Military Channel , History and Fox business because they have Imus and I do not miss NBC ONE BIT AT ALL !! They are going broke because of their liberal biases and having to be bailed out by Comcast should be humiliating !! Now I am going to have to drop Comcast and get satellite TV..
And watch the rationalizations fly, for the rest of the thread…and all other threads like this.
"Well, I only watch this. I only watch that. I only watch between the hours of 1:00AM and 4:00AM. I only watch when the moon is gibbous waxing, and when my trick knee is doing it's thing. I only watch with ONE EYE, and THROUGH A MIRROR!!"
It's quite interesting, and saddening, to see this. Ever known a crackhead or alcoholic? Same deal.
And there are the predictable angry retorts from those who can't admit it. 3…2…1..
You do realize this site is dedicated to visual media right?
Love using the lefts tactics against them when possible, they always have the deer in the headlights look when it happens, and that's the time to step on the gas.
Man are you the real story behind the movie poltergiest?
Did your TV rape you or something? I agree too much TV is bad, like too much liquour is bad, and too mcuh red meat etc. but you are kind of over the top here.
Are you going to go on Big Government next and start telling us we are too political over there?
Seriously, chill out or your head will explode.
Yeah, it kinda makes it the perfect place for that comment.
That comment would have been WAY out of place at, say, a site dedicated to cooking, or knitting.

Sorry, but nothing equals McD's filet-o-sea-kitten.
Add NCIS and NCIS:LA to the boycott list after last night's horrible episodes. Both featured Muslims being the victims of CHRISTIAN hate crimes. Christian Honor Killings, no less! Marines being portrayed as racist rednecks. This during the Christmas season. Delightful isn't it?
I love NCIS and have watched it faithfully for 7 years, they always supported the military and what they do, but last night made me nauseous and disgusted. No more. Officially jumped the finny thing.
Me too! It is amazing what you can accomplish when you opt out of the force fed liberal crap. I have my own personal litmus tests about what I will and will not support, and my college-aged boys have picked up on it as well. We have worked hard to earn our $ and I am selective about where the money goes. I am sick of the arrogance and the condescension. Be particular, people!
LOL. Ok, I hear you, and get you.
From here on out, I'll refrain from admonishments to junk the television sets.
I'll also admit (and have here before) that there have been shows that I really do like. I'll just watch the DVDs or on Hulu, where the green/marxist propaganda is only every other commercial, instead of in every commercial, and on the "coming up on the local news at 5, 6, 10, and 11" commercials. ("We'll show you how to be a more moral person by buying the right organic produce! Coming up on the WGTC news at 10, right after our special presentation of Murder and Mayhem!")
I get a bit hyperbolic, not to mention sardonic, sarcastic, defeatist, and cynical sometimes, as you can see.
Stuck with Magnum? I've been hoping for reruns!
Well, Jeff, I just took your advice and emailed McDonalds and Amex. Here's the text:
"Dear Amex/McDonalds
Just wanted you to know that, as a loyal viewer of Law & Order and consumer of your products, I'm pleased with your continued support of what is a very entertaining and thought-provoking hour of television.
All the best,
Bryan Bell"
Hope that's what you had in mind, Jeff. Keep up the good work.
Law & Order lost me with their leftist propaganda a long time ago. Just list their advertisers and I'll avoid them like the plague.
I'll add, as cynical and defeatist, and as sarcastic as I may come off sometimes, I've never suggested that someone COMMIT SUICIDE, as you just did over at Big Government. You've reached the pinnacle of DailyKoslike class with that one, I gotta say.
Don't insult Deep Space Nine. That was by far the best Star Trek series; it was far superior to The Next Generation and Voyager.
That being said, yeah I was also disgusted with NCIS last night. That show used to be so awesome. Christian honor killings? When the heck does that happen? Religious-nut honor killings, yeah, but Christian? No such thing. Those people said they were Christian, but guess what? THEY ACTED LIKE FANATICAL MUSLIMS. Left me with a bad taste in my mouth, I must say.
I don't eat at McDonald's anyway. It doesn't agree with my GI tract.
If you go over to Drudge right now, and kiss your monitor right on pelosi dragons mouth………you'll probably suffer the same miserable doom as the kimodo dragon manuever. Just sayin'
Like a lot of others, I used to love L&O, and even liked the spinoffs. That was before it they became a vehicle for the leftist hate-mongers. I was watching one episode in particular that attacked Newt Gingrich by name, and with little reference to the plot line. It caused me to turn the channel. Permanently.
I began avoiding Amex or McDonalds products many years ago for other reasons, but I'll be happy to participate in the email campaign. However, I believe NBC is on its last legs anyway, and will soon totter and fall as did GM. Only this time there's not going be enough left for the government to bail out, and hopefully a smarter Congress as well..
Toby Keith was a democrat. He's now registered as an independent. He didn't endorse Obama, as the media has incorrectly reported.
http://www.cmt.com/news/country-music/1596198/tob...
When ART becomes political it is no longer real art. L&O has not been relivent in years
Dear Bryan Bell: You're down six to one. You might also want to upgrade your presentation.
Mr. Riker:
As a former Law and Order fan, I've become very put off by the offensive portrayal of middle-American values as being those of "right wing nut-jobs", and particularly their ad-hominem attacks against prominent people who express those ideals.
America is turning away from such left-wing hate, and as a corporation whose sales are highly dependent on the tastes of ordinary Americans, I would hope you would recognize that trend and sever your ties with them as well.
Law and Order used to be a great show, and could be so again without the politicization that they've chosen to inject into the plot lines. However they've taken a stand on the opposite side of America, and you should recognize that position and stake out your own territory.
When you make that decision, let me know. You'll be able to find my wife, my four children and me enjoying ourselves at Hardees. After all, they make a great burger too.
Regards,
Norris Bettis
Odd given the ongoing decline of Network News, that management would see this as a financially rewarding move, or maybe they see this as a way to justify crenelation of the contract. The same might be ask why would advertisers spend their money in an arena that drives away viewers if the whole point is to maximize your advertising budget. If I held stock in these companies I'd be asking questions about the leaderships direction.
Check out "Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue (The Angry American)" by Toby Keith. I don't know where he stands politically, but this song is definitely not echoing democrats' sentiments.
I stopped watching NBC a few years ago…. as soon as I connected the obvious dots from GE's agenda and the Global Climate grand hoax. Follow the money people!
I don't have to boycott the advertisers, I just stopped watching. When ratings go down, it impacts the amount a network can charge for advertising time, therefore their bottom line. When everyone stops watching NBC, they will not have any advertising draw. NBC's ratings are so low at this point, maybe that is the reason they are so in bed with the government on the "green" campaign, and attempting to sway opinion of the uninformed. I heard recently they were trying to try to sell their "so called" entertainment business. Guess they can make more money on government contracts (windmill engines, lightbulbs, govt. contracts for "smart grid" etc.).
As a side note: I used to occasionally watched the History Channel until I found out last week that it was owned by NBC – which they are now using to spout their crap! That's really too bad. It used to be very interesting to watch.
"I will also admit that in my mind Law & Order: SVU is to the Law & Order brand what Deep Space Nine was to the Star Trek brand. It is a weak cousin that may have been spreading the brand a little too thin."
…..NOT a good example.
Yep. Sorry, but I just about stopped reading with that. DS9 was the best spinoff and almost the best Trek period.
BTW, I bought the entire run of Voyager back in June and am still working through them. It isn't DS9, but it's a fun show. I always liked it and I still do. Janeway's at least less stuffy and PC than Picard.
Have you forgotten "Enterprise"? I'm sure trying.
"As a conservative if you start watching and listening only to things you agree with politically then we are stuck with Magnum P.I. reruns, Ben Stein movies, The 700 Club and Toby Keith CDs."
Hey! What about the A-Team and 24?
Watched the episode in question on DVR last night. There has always been a subtle hint here and there, but I have noticed they are getting more embolden. So I guess I too am a victim, a victim of a vast right wing brainwashing.
Just goes to show you the contempt the left has for us rednecks, always seeking to educate us to our short comings.
Best cop in the history in that show was Lenny, RIP.
Hulu.com has a ton of them. Including the pilot.
Janeway couldn't decide who she was from week to week. I think she was a little bit schizo. Or poorly written.
I was never a L&O fan, so no comment.
NCIS though – bad taste, must spit it out. What went wrong? It was good a couple weeks ago.
McDonald's boycott, not a problem. Amex boycott may be a problem. I don't use one but my other half does and it may be a case of "prying it from his cold dead hands." I'm all in for boycotts. I'm boycotting the NFL for their comments about Rush when he was part of that consortium that was to purchase a team. NBC? No draw there for me. ABC about the same. CBS only certain shows and unfortunately they are NCIS, NCIS: LA (although I find that premise totally unbeleavable.), CSI:NY. So far CSI:NY hasn't hacked me off but then I've been doing plays and haven't had much time to watch the idiot box.

I was thinking of Voyager!!!
Enterprise will be the next L&O spinoff, the one no one really really really gives a crap about.
I say ignore them. Turn them off. Let them sink into the sunset. Don't give them the time of day. Sure, speak out when they offend (as I have many times here), but boycotts only serve as free advertising, IMHO. Look at how well they worked for Glenn Beck and whole Foods. Caused a backlash. Don't give Lefties anything to rally around here. Just give 'em plenty of rope. They'll hang themselves with viewers and audiences eventually.
I remember L&O in the early days, when they were unafraid. Two episodes in particular, the one based on the Steinberg case (Indifference) and the one based on the Tawana Brawley case – wonderful, bold and thoughtful writing. I doubt that they would have the courage to address the Brawley case today, or it would be folded into a larger conspiracy wherein the culprit was a corporate type who was a deacon in his church and who happened to be named "Christian". Now everything's off a template – the dysfunctional family, the promiscuous teen (preferably from a good, Christian home), the callous doctor (unless he is an abortion provider, in which case he's a martyr), the bigoted conservative – exhibiting that foolish consistency that's the hobgoblin of hack writers.
I don't object to boycotts – sometimes they can be very effective – but this is my strategy: when a TV show starts to turn me off, I reciprocate.
Sorry Jeffrey, it's a little hard to take you seriously on this when you freely admit that you're unwilling to even stop watching the show(s). If L&O is that offensive to you (as it is to me) then stop watching it. Stop talking about it. Is your life that empty that you absolutely can't give up a television show? You can't find anything else to fill that time? Even if you can't bear to yank yourself away from the TV, stop DVRing L&O, stop watching, change the channel if it comes on. But don't try to convince us that the show deserves a boycott when you won't even stop tuning in.
THIS is what they got from me, Bryan, so your support has just been cancelled out.
"AMEX's/McDonald's sponsorship of the vile, highly-partisan, hateful programming on NBC such as the latest episode of "Law and Order" have caused me to cut up both of my AMEX cards and avoid your restaurants. I will NOT re-institute these accounts nor patronize your establishments unless and until AMEX/McDonalds gets a civic conscience and withdraws sponsorship of anti-American, far-left propaganda pretending to be "entertainment."
bakayarou!
Didn't "crossing jordan" jump the shark when they started with this kind of thing? Remember when the character "Bug" was going to be waterboarded by the authorities? Now that's entertainment…
You need to re-think the History Channel as it is slowly changing history as we know it! Everything lately has been about how bad and evil America is!!
This doesn't surprise me. I had been a lifelong L&O fan, and watched the original, criminal intent and SVU versions. Earlier this year, I increasingly became angry at thinly vieled anti conservative/right themes in the shows. I haven't watched any of the shows in some time, as I continued to see this bias making its way into the plots. I really don't miss it. A sad rape of what used to be a good product. Is this the NBC effect on writers?
Dear Bryan,
This is what I have always claimed is the greatest thing about America : You have an absolute right to be as stupid as you want to be! My biggest problem with any administration is when they try to take that right away from folks like you, all the best.
the left is not just content with organizing boycotts….they threaten, bully, and actually beat up on people….personal invective and vituperation is the norm, rather that sane discourse….if you do not agree with them they want to shut you down….they don't believe in the Cons;titution, freedom of speech, freedom to bear arms….they'll use any method available to shut down dissent as per saul alinsky, john creamer, and eric holdren, etc. as far as Copenhagen….how's that working out for you libs?
Yeah, it was like "A Christmas Message from NCIS: Be Nice to Muslims!" Very heavy-handed. The show has dealt with Muslims and their issues much more subtly – and believably – in past episodes. This one was strictly script-by-the-numbers liberal boilerplate. Sad, because I really like the show. It's one of the few that deals respectfully and at least semi-realistically with the US military.
"Finny thing" love it. I was thinking the same thing when I watched it. I just emailed CBS and told them how I felt for what it is worth. It doesn't seem as anyone is listening anymore does it?
Trying to promote political messages is where art goes to die.
I haven't watched any of these shows for years. I can feel, taste and smell the leftist ideology and assumptions that permeate the stories and characters. I couldn't take it. Because there are millions like me, the shows now have a predominant audience of conscious or unconscious leftists, and the writers are free to go further into the political realm. This has happened recently in news divisions as well. Once Fox appeared, the right leaning audience deserted the networks, giving the networks more freedom to move left and/or be more overtly partisan.
There is the problem too of what kind of villain to portray. All they are left with for the past 20 years has been evil corporate types, aliens, Russian thugs and basically well-off white Christians. Everything else gets them in trouble with interest groups.
I caution conservatives to stay away from becoming another thin-skinned interest group. I just don't watch. I watch South Park. One pertinent South Park episode consumes10 times it's weight in Hollywood absurdity. And to the creative people here, let's put our energy into making things that skewer these drones.
We also can know them by their advertisers. Mc Donald's? With all due respect, what does that tell us about the existing audience demographics?
*ears perk up*
you rang?
"You hit me! Captain Picard never hit me…" ~ Q
"I'm not Captain Picard." ~ Captain Sisko
Last week's episode of Friday Night Lights had a picture of Obama, but it was on the wall in a black barber shop so it seemed realistic.
Sweet! TY!
Who are some of the other companies? Because we already don't use Amex, and rarily eat McDonalds (only when I have a craving for their Egg McMuffins or their nuggets)….
And as the pain runs down your arm and you clutch your chest, remember that you were a loyal consumer of McDonald's……Maybe NBC will send a nice wreath thanking you for your lifetime (albeit short) of support….
Good luck!!
"lie to me" — the last episode feature conservative terrorists plotting to blow up DC…
and i like that show… oh well books it is
I stopped watching the show because of this episode, and the following one that dissed Sarah Palin. I don't insist that shows support my political views, but I won't watch them if I am being denigrated. It was a good show; it's too bad that it has bought into this garbage.
Lie To Me just raked conservatives over the coals in portraying farmers as terrorists plotting to blow up DC…
nice.. classy..
I love that song! It the only songs with cursing that I let my nieces and nephew listen too.
DS9 was certainly MY favorite – BY FAR!!
I was in the US Navy for 23 years. We used to call NCIS No Caught 11 (one) Suspect. The show is an embarrassment to the US Navy andUSMC.
Toby stated in an interview somewhere, he still considers himself a Democrat, but he's a "self-professed" Blue Dog Democrat.
Wow, that's going to be effective. "I haven't watched a single episode in the last 20 years, and because you've made me mad I don't intend to start now!"
And you spend all that time you saved — reading and posting on a site complaining about the movies and TV shows you don't see. Excellent trade-off!
Oh,wow. Not only do I want to go eat a sea kitten, I now want to stuff one and mount it on my wall.
Deep Space Nine was far and away the best Trek series. You're thinking of Voyager.
I am not so sure about the Puritan thing when you look at Voyager. Trapped in the Delta quadrant, with a loudmouth Holo-doc to boot, and the Borg knocking at your door every 3 episodes or so. That was some good watchin.
"We are the Libs, lower your reason and prepare to be insulted. We will add your biological and philosophical uniqueness to our own. Resistance is futile."
I don't think that made it through one season, so the networks forgot it fast.
wakarimashita, but for those who don't, Daioh just hollered, "IDIOT!!!" Well said.
"what Deep Space Nine was to the Star Trek brand. " WHAT??????? I love DS9. You need a better comparison
What a dissapointment the people at Law and Order are. Why couldn't they have kept poltics out of it?
Yum. Breaded deep fried sea-gerbils, corn on the cob and a tall cold beer.
I used to watch L&O and L&O SVU, but gave up on them well over a year ago. Besides their painfully contrived preaching, they just became stupid. I rarely watch network TV anymore.
LOL!
Because those of us worshipping at the 1024×768 altar are SO much more enlightened than the folks worshipping at the 1080p altars…
The term you're looking for is "benighted." The folks on the Palin threads have a thesaurus.
I'm in the same boat. Sad that what has been excellent writing devolves into politically correct screeds aimed at a population that contrary to popular leftist myth, are not generally violent and who believe that peace on earth is not a function of forced philosophy, as in Islam, but the free gift of a Loving God.
I stopped watching Cold Case over a year ago because of their portrayal of military members as racist killers. The politics became too much, so I stopped DVRing it and now don't even miss it. L&O has been going downhill for years, Fred Thompson was kind of a stabilizing conservative voice in the show. Now that he is gone L&O has gone completely leftist.
I'm in for the email campaign, though I don't eat at McDonald's anymore. I'm poles part, politically, from the Law & Order gang….but, I have enjoyed many of the Criminal Intent episodes.
Best of the Star Treks?
"to boldly sit here on this space station and wait for stuff to happen to us that has never happened before"?
