Stand Up Notes From Flyover Country: Poster Boy for What’s Wrong in Washington!
by Jeffrey JenaWhen President Obama was just Candidate Obama and tossing promises to us like Mardi Gras beads to shirtless women, he made a few that we all liked. The two things even we of the far-right wing nut-job persuasion hoped might be true were that he was going to change the way things were done in Washington and there was going to be a new transparency in government. Even though I am at times jaded and a bit cynical, I have never given up hoping. I wasn’t holding my breath, but if the President held up his word I was willing to give him credit.

Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, candidate Barack Obama and Gov. Ted Strickland
The poster boy for these two broken promises is Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown. If you’ve never heard of Senator Brown he is probably most famous for being mistaken for an African-American by Rush Limbaugh because of his name. He is actually a child of privilege who was raised in Northeastern Ohio. Senator Brown has never had a “real” job. After graduating from Yale, Senator Brown entered politics taking a short break to go back to college for an advanced degree. Despite the fact Senator Brown has never worked in the private sector much less gotten his hands dirty with physical labor, he likes to see himself as a common man. What rich, well connected politician doesn’t? The Senator has been in Washington so long he has come to think he is employed by the Democrat Party and not the people of Ohio.
Senator Brown was one of the brave legislators who when he saw how the whole open town meeting thing was going last summer staged a number of “community roundtables” in heavily Democratic areas. Senator Brown claims to have visited voters in every Ohio county but has dodged my county and my invitations to appear at a true open town meeting. His propaganda events were heavily attended by stooges from the SEIU and other Brown operatives. Public input was heavily limited and also staged as I have documented in the past. These union “workers” would have been easy for Senator Brown to turn out as his daughter is employed by the SEIU. His other daughter works for the Ohio House Democratic Caucus. If one were a cynic they might wonder how hard those two had to work to get those jobs
His biggest achievement in his three years in the Senate was that he had compiled a voting record that is 97% along party lines. Recently, Senator Brown did a bit of grandstanding and included his name on a Republican amendment that would demand all congress members join the public option in health care. An amendment he knew would not make the bill but gives him cover at home. Again a cynical person might wonder if he had to get permission from his boss Harry Reid to make this move. If the Senator wants to show he is serious he should write his own amendment, get a few other committed Democrats to join him and refuse to vote for any health care legislation that does not contain his amendment. Rep. Bart Stupak, a Michigan has already shown this kind of courage, but I am guessing Senator Brown doesn’t have that much spine.
To see how much of a lap dog to the party Senator Brown has become one only need look at his voting on the meaningful amendments to the Senate health care legislation. On the three amendments, to stop stripping a total of $560 billion from Medicare, Senator Brown said no, no, no!
If Senator Brown believes in transparency and bipartisanship why has he not spoken out against the closed door meeting that excluded conservative voices in drafting this legislation? Why has he not demanded the President uphold his campaign to put the crafting of this legislation on C-Span? If he is a man of the people, why has didn’t he support the amendment limiting the payout to tort lawyers in medical malpractice lawsuits? I have an idea how we can help Senator Brown achieve his desire to become a man of the people of Ohio; help him join them in the unemployment line in 2012.

Brown is nothing but a carpetbagger. He stopped in our office during the 2008 presidential campaign.
Of course, the statists in my office had to tell him that I was the office conservative. He looked at me and said "You're too young to be a Republican."
I told him personal accountability, self-governance, free-market solutions, pro-life values, and dedication to the Second Amendment are the pillars of this country — and are not exclusive to an age group.
It looked like he was going to give me some tired feelings-based spiel, but I think he realized I'm here to play, and went on his way.
Brown's time will come – NO MORE EFFETE – ELITES running our lives – VOTE HIM OUT!

sounds a lot like Fourtney 'Pete' Stark in CA…
another loser born of priviledge who had to adopt the moniker 'Pete' because of his,um, unfortunate first name- which no one who has ever lifted a bag of beans has. Brown is a relaible party hack, and that's why he's there.
Certainly not for any brilliant insight. He isn't even highly regarded amongst his own kind…
OMG Jeff, I'm also from Ohio(Cincy) and I'm sooo embarrassed by both of these political hacks. I hope the rest of the country dosen't hold it against us
. You didn't even go into all of the accusations swirling around strickland during the last election(if even 10% of these were true it's hard to believe he won an election!). Thanks for the great reporting Jeff, next time can it be about Ky.? Lol….
good for you. you're nicer than me- i probably would have shot back, "you're too old to still be dumb enough to be a democrat."
No doubt Brown is one poster boy. I guess it's fortunate for him (and unfortunate for us) that they're so many others that they sort of blend in with each other.

Harry Truman once said, "No man should be allowed to be President who does not understand hogs." If I may I'll change that slightly to, "No man should be allowed to hold public office who has never worked with his hands."
The force is strong with you young one. Never turn to the dark side.
As a dislocated Buckeye, I fully agree with the assesment of Sherrod Brown. How I remember all too clearly his campaign propaganda with him standing outside of closed factories spewing the rhetoric that ultimately got him elected. Shame on you, Ohio. For such a distinguished and proud state, I can't believe you couldn't see through swill this schmuck was selling. You know what they say, "fool me once, shame on you……fool me twice………."you know the rest. Vote Him OUT, OHIO!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sat in on a number of Brown's phone conferences with the media. I can't remember him having one without some union crony along for the ride, usually touting some bogus fiasco like green jobs with wind mills and how they were going to save Ohio industry. Brown would chime in from time to time but sounded half disinterested or involved in the discussion – and half competent at that. Ohio's had some bad Republicans, but they've had some really bad Democrats.
That's hilarious! I probably should've said that — because it's so true.

Ohio need to 'take care' that this idiot does NOT hold job of any kind in politics!!! Enough already!!!
Gee, I had NO idea that there were age limits placed on which party one votes for. ;^)
You gave him a great answer back, though. BRAVO !
Why has Mr. Obama spent over $1.5M paid to Perkins Coie Law Firm to keep his original birth certificate, college transcripts, passport and other records hidden from public view?
Why was his first order of business after the inauguration to sign an executive order ensuring these records are remain unseen?
Some say the Devil's biggest accomplishment was to convince many he does not exist. Old Scratch himself must be proud of the Democrats who, in spite of being the party of super wealth (Brown, Kennedy, Lautenberg, Kohl,
Edwards, Warner (Mark), Kerry, Pelosi to name just a FEW), they, with the help of the propaganda media, have managed to convince a good number of Americans (not the sharpest knives in the drawer to be sure) that they are in lockstep with the common man. They pile massive taxes on working Americans (whether they work on the assembly line or in the operating room) while they slip through the loopholes (Teresa Heinz Kerry earned 5.5 MILLION dollars in 2003 on which she paid a total of 12.2% – look it up). Hypocritically, the next year her husband was lambating Bush's "tax cuts for the rich".

A good blog for tracking Sherrod Brown and his execrable wife is http://www.rightohio.com (not my site, just a plug)
Dear Mr. Jena – Sing it Brother!!! Sherrod Brown has always been the textbook description of "empty suit." However he is just following the template created by all of the entrenced Democratic politicians in this state. I live in Lucas County which has been dominated by the Democratic machine and their union allies since the day dirt was invented. We have one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, the highest percentage of out-of-wedlock childbirths in the state, a floundering school system and an unbelieveably toxic climate for new business. Yet our local populace, with help from an thoroughly incompetent local GOP, keeps these nimrods and their union capos entrenched in power. It is that way all through the state. But Mr. Brown's resume reveals an important fact. He went into politics rights out of college and undoubtedly lives, breaths and eats politics every day. From my experience Ohio Dems are like an army always on the march. They have no other function in life but politics and power.. And they are willing to destroy anyone who gets in their way. Republicans won't be able to make any progres without some fire in the belly and total committment…Sorry to rant but this struck a nerve.
Dear Ms Berry
I hope you are wrong but oly time will tell.
Sing it Brother – Sherrod Brown has always been the textbook description of an "empty suit." However he is just following the path created by all the entrenced Democratic politicians in this state. I live in Lucas County which has been dominated by the Dem machine and their union allies since forever. We have one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, a stagnant local economy and a toxic climate for new business. Yet our local populace, with help from an incompetent local GOP, keeps these nimrods and their union capos entrenched in power. That is the pattern throughout the state. Guys like Brown went into politics rights out of college and live, breath and eat politics every day. From my experience Ohio Dems are like an army always on the march. They have no other function in life but politics and power.. And they are willing to destroy anyone who gets in their way. Republicans won't be able to make any progress without some fire in the belly and an equal committment……..Sorry to rant but this struck a nerve.
In Northeast Ohio we like to call Sherrod Brown, "Mr. Connie Shultz." His wife is a columnist for the Cleveland Plain Dealer and has won a Pulitzer for writing the type of article that liberals like to give other liberals a Pulitzer for writing. Of course they live in the upper class comfort of a lily white western suburb of Cleveland, but I'm pretty sure they have a good reason for living there other than choosing to live there because it's so damn nice. But they care about the lower class. Really…honest…they do.
YOu have nothing to feel embarrassed about. I am from the true Left Coast. I live in one of the only remotely conservative district in CA, and I am surrounded by liberal morons who vote morons in to the state legislature every cycle because of fixed districts. You should see our district lines, they are horrible. Anyway, don't feel bad, CA has more than it's share too.
Ah, consequences of hasty commenting.
Apparently, I meant Sen. Nelson (D-Neb) who wrote an amendment for the Senate bill based on the Stupak bill. He is now waffling, according to HuffPo (so take it for what it's worth.)
"I want to continue to work on this," he said, not ruling out his support, at least "not at this point in time. I want to continue to work on the project we're working on… This makes it harder right now [to support the bill]. We'll have to see if they can make it easier."

Classic!
I thought we were the dark side?
More than likely he didn't win. I believe elections in Ohio and other places are fixed. I dont trust those who count the votes nor the Secretaries of the State. I wish there were a real good investigation so the American people can really know what happens after they cast their votes, how many arent counted or purposely misrecorded. That is how these hacks "win". It's fixed. Sad to say.
There's plenty of non-transparency that we see the Dem's resorting to, realistically, as they struggle to pass ambitious legislation.
But as a voter, do I feel that I've been cheated on the promise that the Dick Cheney style secrecy and power grabs would be stopped? NO. The situation is much improved.
In what ways has it improved? Give some examples
sure. here are three examples…
1. Obama complied with a court order directing the release of Bush-era OLC memos on torture;
http://www.whitehouse.gov/the_press_office/Statem...
2. He issued an Executive Order creating additional procedures before executive secrecy under FOIA could be asserted.
http://washingtonindependent.com/26593/obama-issu...
3. He ordered his agency heads to interpret FOIA with a "presumption" in favor of disclosure.
http://www.whitehouse.gov/the_press_office/Freedo...
maybe not much, or even not enough, but… still improvements.
Brown needs a big boot out the door!!
I won't hold it against you as long as you don't blame me for Clinton and Schummer.
No man is "allowed" to be president. They have to be elected by We The People.
Which, considering the current administration, does not make me feel any better.
My theory is he realizes that he will be politically attacked, for what ever reason his detractors can come up with.
By doing this, he's chosen the battle, because it makes for great MSM news. This way Chris Matthews and his ilk get to knowingly chuckle over "birthers.'
Politically it was a smart move.
One of the wonderful little tricks the ruling elite pulls on We The People. They don't tax wealth, they tax income.
Once they're filthy, stinkin' rich, they quite working, or else take some token pay check, and live off accumulated wealth.
De ja vu!
He's gotten his head lines, he can campaign saying he fought the good fight, but was defeated. So you need to re-elect him so he can continue the good fight.
Speaking of Stupak, I beleive I saw a headline stating that his bluff was called and that he will not filibuster the disbandment of his amendment.
No, the dark side has cookies. We got the moral high ground… and chocolate covered pretzels.
You mean like Obama?
This is nothing. Complying with a court order that he himself concocted? A couple of momentary nods to the FOIA? meh – these were little more than trinkets thrown to the slavering savages. He has yet to actually keep specific promises made in the name of 'transparency' – how do you think he's shoved his stimulus package down our throats?
Political theatre is a high art form for the left, probably why hollywood loves the Dem's so much, birds of a feather and all.
"Leave this voter, he's not the mindless democrat you are looking for."
My first reaction to this post was to say "well, it's your state's fault for electing him again and again". Then, I remembered that my state keeps sending Barbara Boxer to the Senate. :/
Campaign Lies are out front and anyone who calls them out is mocked with, "That was the campaign, stupid!"
Oh good. Hard to get chocolate covered pretzels through dark helmet mask breathers.
Ah yes, Babs Boxer. If that woman no longer had a government job to go to, I dont know what she would do for a living. These career politicians are the major problem when it comes to the corruption in our state and federal legislatures. They keep getting voted in, so they don't feel beholden to anybody.
S. Brown and company have made a deal with the Devil. I can only hope that people across the country will help their fellow true Americans and donate their $$$'s to get these vile and corrupt, treasonous p.o.s. out of Office. It is time for the true Americans who love the Constitution to take back not only the country, but, Washington D.C.
God Bless the United States.
I refuse to believe that a majority of American Citizens are not horrified by what is happening in this country. Rise up peacefully and donate $$'s and time to throw these treasonous people out.
Enough!
I can only pray that all of these criminals in Gov't end up in jail.
If you look up the articles of Teresa Heinz Kerry's taxes, you would have seen why the percent she paid was low. A very large percent of her assets were in government bonds that were tax free. Because they were tax free, they were issued with a lower rate of return than they could have been otherwise. This is to the advantage of the government, because they get the money at a lower rate immediately.
You forget that her husband has repeatedly said that what he proposed would mean that both he and his wife would pay more. It is not hypocritical to advocate something, not to your personal advantage, that you believe in. Kerry has been 100% consistent – he voted against the Bush tax cuts in 2001 – and has never been in favor of them.
The Irony. SEIU Sherrod Brown buying ads and using his website to ask for money to fight against Pay to Play. His office gives me the brush off when I call. He's never been to my county either.
Here is the site where Brown is asking for money for Pay to Play. http://www.sherrodbrown.com/site/petition
