Stand Up Notes From Flyover Country: Boycotting the NFL
by Jeffrey JenaThere was a time when the National Football League ownership ranks were filled with hard hitting men. Guys who had played the game and knew how to take a hit. Now it is full of preening prima donnas who would rather play politics than football. Many of them are frustrated athletes or dilettantes whose daddies left them a football team in their wills. These armchair quarterbacks have proved their football and business ineptitude by fielding “professional” teams that go season after season with fewer wins than the fingers on the hand of an inept shop teacher.

Recently, conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh was asked to bring his considerable financial help to a group trying to buy the St. Louis Rams in order to keep the team in St. Louis. Rush is a Missouri native and a huge fan of the game, so it seemed like a natural fit. Rush was to be a minority partner in the group. He wouldn’t be picking in the draft or calling plays, just putting his money up and perhaps switching his allegiance from his beloved Steelers to the lowly Rams.
The mention of Rush’s name is like nails on a chalkboard to some liberal elements in America. No opportunity to try to reduce his stature or influence on the political discussion is ignored. Any chance to stop anything Rush does is seen as a political statement. There is a far left-wing in the Democrat party that hates him and what he stands for so deeply that I think if Rush really wanted to stop the government takeover of health care all he would have to do is say that he supports it and those folks would assume it to be evil and walk away from their plans.
So when Rush was mentioned as a part of the group bidding to take over the Rams, the call was sounded on the far left. The usual suspects hurried to get in front of the cameras and denounce Mr. Limbaugh with lies and misquotes. Under political pressure, the NFL owners folded like the Lions’ defense and chose anti-Semites and race pimps for their new minority partners rather than a man who worked for his money. The excuse given was that Rush was too divisive a figure to be involved with the NFL. As if having Keith “Overbearing” Olbermann on the sidelines or the press box as an official part of the game isn’t enough to make a large percentage of NFL fans consider switching over to the figure skating on another network. There seems to be a bit of bias against conservatives in the NFL, and even though a number of RINO’s and country club Republicans own teams. Not a single owner spoke up for Rush, not one.
Don’t misunderstand, I believe it is the NFL owners’ proverbial ball and they are free to do as they wish. They want to pick appeasing the left over allowing Rush a few shares of a team, that’s their business. I won’t even get into the people that already own teams or parts of teams and what their backgrounds may be.
However, the next time they come to me and ask for my support to buy a ticket, watch a game or vote for a bond issue for a stadium, they can ask someone else. As of today, for me, the NFL no longer exists. I am thinking that there are a lot of folks who feel the same way. This past Sunday I watched no NFL football. You know what? I’m still alive! Next Sunday I don’t know what I’ll be doing but it will be something besides watching the NFL.
Join me if you wish and maybe we can show the owners how capitalism works.

Not quite sure I'm willing to go there yet. But the last NFL licensed merchandise has been purchased in my house. Similarly, since Dave Checketts decided he didn't like Rush's money anymore, I can only assume he doesn't like mine either. Blues? Blah!
Amen, Jeffrey. Apparently, George Soros is a perfectly acceptable minority owner (in the same consortium that dumped Rush) and the rabid leftist Keith Olbermann is not a divisive figure for some inexplicable reason. Outrageous. I followed and loved the NFL my whole life, but this is too much. The NFL owners have become functionaries of the Obama Apparatus.
Oh yeah Jeffrey, this idea has legs. Good luck. Hey, whatever happened to Rush suing the reporters who called him racist. Did he say he was going to do that or was it just wishful thinking on the part of this site's followers.
Isn't it ironic that the NFL owners show how some socialist ideas can work? The salary cap, revenue sharing, the draft… all instituted in the name of serving the 'greater good' and creating parity. And the NFL seems pretty damn successful in employing these anti-capitalist policies, the very nature of which ideologues such as Mr. Limbaugh rail against on a regular basis.
Rush is an adult that understands personal accountability; if you stir up crap for a living (which he does, and is paid handsomely for it) you ought not be surprised if things get a little crappy now and then. If you want to champion conservatism, ask Rush to accept his personal responsibility (and share of blame, if you have to call it that) for the inclement political climate in which he finds himself instead of blaming the left… you do understand that Rush is unliked by a lot of centrists too, right?
Funny thing, I came to the same conclusion a few years back but not because the NFL was bad, I just found a better product, NASCAR. Seriously, I never thought I would watch a car race but I have spent the last two years worth of Sundays and occasionally Saturday nights watching NASCAR Sprint Cup Races. It's good stuff, no kidding…
I'm married to my college and high school (one of the country's top prep programs) teams, so I could care less what happens in the NFL.
I grew up cheering for one team, but I had enough of it, so I picked a new team: The Dallas Cowboys. It's a team I can get behind, win or lose. I like Jerry Jones' worldview — and more importantly, he's one of the last of the old guard … a true maverick, who is committed to exceptionalism.
In the AFC, I cheer for the Cleveland Browns, because I love Paul Brown, Otto Graham, Paul Warfield, and their history. Plus, I hate the Obama-loving Dan Rooney and his Steelers.
I still don't buy NFL merchandise because of the communist revenue-sharing policies — I don't want to subsidize the loser mentality that's so rampant among the owners.
I just love football.
is there any way we can include college football in this? no playoffs, why? please dear G@d let it be a boise/iowa championship game.
I watched college football on Saturday, enjoyed every game. On Sunday we had the tv on Fox News and the Food Network. Done with the pathetic NFL. I did have some respect for the NFL, seeming to try to not have as many thugs as the NBA promotes. No more. The race hustler brothers of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson can now fill their stadiums and buy all the over priced merchandise.
I won't call it a boycott, I just won't turn on the NFL any more. My friend that has season tickets to the Seahawks has already decided he won't be renewing.
There is a way that the NFL can fix this, but it requires having a spine and I don't think that Roger Goodell has one.
I'm sorry, I just find this idea a bit silly. When certain churches decided a few years ago to boycott Disney, they didn't exactly bring the company to its knees. Which was okay with me, because although the company was sponsoring some truly obnoxious films through Miramax, they also provided some wonderful products through Pixar and there theme parks that brought delight and memories to my kids.
Rush himself has always been a sceptic about the worth of boycotts. I'm a regular Rush listener. I'm also a 49ers fan. I'm not about to give up either, because of the petty smears of Al Sharpton.
Mr. Jena,
If you owned a business that catered to the general public, would YOU hire Mr Limbaugh? You'd be foolish to do that as he is a tremendously polarizing character, of his own making. The time and effort you'd spend fending off negative publicity would swamp your operation.
I often agree with Limbaugh's views, but I won't join your boycott, as my allegiance and love for the Bears and the NFL is much greater than my allegiance to any political entertainer, or politician for that matter.
Now boycotting Keith Overbite and anything he does for NBC? That comes naturally.
I used to watch football because my then-wife was (and still is, I think) a fan of the Tennessee Titans and her parents were also football fans.
Now that she's the ex-wife, I only catch the occasional Super Bowl…and even then, the commercials are more fun.
You do understand the legal implications of defamation, right?
You do understand the concept of a double standard, right?
The irony is that you apparently didn't read/understand the article.

Soros was NOT part of Checketts' ownership group:

Note to self…buy more chalkboards and grow those fingernails.
As so often happens when the "R" word is used as a political tool, reason and fairness were lost in the mix. No one in or associated with the NFL considered whether it was reasonable or fair to deny an investment opportunity to someone with the money to invest in an NFL team, someone who had been invited to invest. The NFL should keep in mind that liberals haven't been good for the entertainment industry.
Centrists and moderates are just closet democrats. They're the people that act undecided until the last minute when they decide to vote democrat. If they had half a brain, they'd be conservative to begin with.
Not very observational or apolitical of you to make those statements, is it?
Rush actually never said it…but then again, you probably think he actually made all those racist quotes, too.
And if you disagree with me, then you're probably a racist.
I'm not suggesting that defaming Rush is defensible; it's not. You will get no argument from me on that point. But to suggest that the general public's perception of Rush Limbaugh has everything to do with a couple of maliciously false quotes as opposed to his decades of snarkiness over the airwaves, you are fooling yourself.
And I'm not really aware of anything that involves human beings that doesn't also involve a double standard in one form or another. Crap happens.
His "beloved Steelers"? Hell. That's breaking news to me. When did Rush become a Steeler fan? Obviously I don't listen to the show.
And NeoConJedi….don't bring a knife to a gun fight. Linking Obama and the Rooney's to what is going on the field is a slippery slope. Besides you insult my (black &) golden retriever – named Rooney – because he is a true patriot.
Look if you truly just love football then you should embrace what the STeeler Organization is all about. It's called integrity. And "communist revenue-sharing policies"? Dude are you kidding me? What people just don't get is that the NFL 'IS' THE ENTITY. Each team represents 1/32 of THE ENTITY. Let's say that 31 of the 32 teams folded who would that last team play on Sundays? Themselves? I know Jerry Jones would like to think that the Cowboys represent America's "Team" but sorry Jerry…YOU are just 1/32. And your new scoreboard is also calling your 1/32 of the NFL a bunch of losers. rofl
Now if you really want an issue regarding the NFL then look no further than suspect officiating which effects who covers the betting line. I see it far more in college football. Just watch the drive from last Saturday when the Florida Gators scored their last touchdown. Let's just say the Gators were never going to lose that game. It's BS…..errrr the BCS.
The funny part about the Magic Negro bit, was that he ripped it off the LA Times, from writer David Ehrenstein (Jewish-conspiracy theorists, eat your heart out).
Source here: http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la...
Rush didn't invent the Magic Negro. He merely reported it, lampooned it, and got a bunch of liberals' knickers in a knot.
The NFL hasn't been on my radar for an entertainment choice for years, primarily because of the money- grubbing tactics of the owners- I mean, come on- 7 bucks for a beer? $75 bucks for a seat? Really?
I mean, this extends to all sports- I just said no- if I go see a ball game, I find more joy in little league or Pop Warner, I see more flair and enjoyment in a pick up game of B- ball than I do in the NBA.
Plus that, I don't have to read of the latest felon to be "allowed" back in the league- that gets so tiresome.
Rush has plenty of money, and the NFL could have used his popularity more than they could use Michael Vick, but since they love to shoot themselves in the foot, who am I to stop them?
Have not and do not watch the NBC football games, just really hate most of the anouncers. Not politically, they just annoy me. Now if Boomer Eisienson (sp) whould go there, I would enjoy TV Pro football more.
"Now it is full of preening prima donnas who would rather play politics than football. "
The NFL is JUST SO GAY!!!!!!!
Unlike Rush whose heterosexual credentials are utterly impeccable.
There is a puppet on the right. There is a puppet on the left. The same guy holds both puppets. Am I missing something?
Is there any business where something like this would be allowed to go on? Let's reverse this situation and see if the same holds true. Al Sharpton wants to buy a McDonald's franchise. Would McD not give him a license because of his political views? Free country, Free markets! And you're free to do want you want with your money! and you're free to be a ignorant moron!
http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la...
Read it. Limbaugh didn't invent the "Barack the Magic N____" routine. David Ehrenstein at the LA Times did. Rush just reported it, lampooned it, and caused liberals the country over to get their knickers in a knot.
The same logic then should have been applied to Micheal Vick, but we see he is still able to earn millions in the NFL. I am sorry, but this is a hypocritical standard.
Apolitical. You libs stuck it to Bush for 8 years and now we're suppose march in line with Barry?
I know exactly what you mean.
But if Delhomme could remember what color jerseys his team wore, I might still watch football.
Apparently, Keith Olbermann is not divisive. For me the point of the article is if you're opinionated and conservative, the NFL doesn't want you. Opinionated and liberal, why, come on in.
I think my neck would get sore watching cars drive around in a circle for 3 hours.
Wow, terrific fact checking there bubz. CNN wants you.
I never said anything remotely approaching 'marching in line with Barry.'
Both the right and the left are fatally myopic and out of touch with reality. They can see that about each other and will shout about it to the heavens… but somehow they do not recognize the same shortcomings in themselves.
I guess, whether R or D, it's better to ignore and deny our own hypocrisy than to admit it, face it, and use it to grow.
As a matter of fact it is cute! I prefer the EIB Gospel Singers too. But John Edward's "More of a woman than you" takes the cake.
And if you want to watch football and spend way too much money for over priced crap, feel free, its a free country.
That is, apparently unless your a conservative who happens to have the left down to a "T". Which says something about your real views on freedom and liberty.
We are probably coming at this from two different directions who happen to arrive with the same conclusion. Boycotting the NFL? I'd boycott the NFL the same way the NFL players would boycott Rush as an owner and turn down several million to play for another team. RIIIIIIIGGGHHTTT! It's going to take more than this although Soros sticking his nose in further could do it. For sure.
And embracing a media outlet that can make up stories and quotes and attribute them to political adversaries tells a lot about what is in your soul. Take a look in the mirror "Joe" because if your are really the "average" then we true Americans have our work cut out. Just be hopeful someone doesn't slander your children one day.
If I were those reporters, I'd be calling my lawyers, because when Rush is ready to hit back, he's going to smother them. Rick Sanchez already ran scared. He publicly apologized. Good thing for him Rush is most likely magnanimous to accept it.
I can't wait for the legal fireworks to commence!
Rush Limbaugh is too "divisive" for the NFL, but a rabid poodle like Keith Olberman is OK?
Eh… I don't particularly care for Pro-Football, so I think I will stick with my Sooners, even though they suck this year. Though if I do see a Vikings game on I might watch it just to see Adrian Peterson (former Sooner that got screwed out of the Heisman, IMO) play again…
I thought the commercials were the sole purpose of watching the super bowl….
You don't know crap about socialism, capitalism or economics do you? The analogy with socialism is a fallacy because what about all the players who try out, but aren't selected? Remember, socialism purports to be all inclusive, the exact opposite of the NFL. And wait for the next strike to tout how great all those salary caps are.
I listen to Rush all the time, so I guess you don't, or else you would have heard him, he's not that upset about the deal falling through, he's going after the MSM for attributing false quotes to him. And I look forward to all those liars in the MSM getting the crap right back in their face from El Rushbo.
It's going to be great!
I agree. The announcers are extremely annoying in both college and NFL broadcasts. My husband usually turns down the sound and we watche the game in silence. No, "blah, blah, blah listen to how smart I am" from a bunch of igmos whose grammar could use some work, by the way.
As long as Keith Olbermann is on the air with the NFL. The NFL is off in my house. I like Collage Football from now on!
I started my own, self-imposed NFL boycott here: http://bit.ly/2kEER8 after doing my own analysis on this stuation here http://bit.ly/4pV1NB and here: http://bit.ly/2Ag5Dr In fact, my take was linked to by the Village Voice of all people as part of their bigotry defense (You know, the usual right wing blogosphere hammer job kind of thing the left always does to those they disagree with,) here: http://bit.ly/GNmbT . As a result, though, I'm kinda forced to watch home improvement shows or something on my 72 inch HD TV every Sunday… sigh.
Thanks for a polite, respectful disagreement with the author. I'd much rather read one of these than like those other louts. That's always bugged me about liberals. They think crude, crass, insults equal signs of high intelligence, while its actually and indication of stupidity.
While I do support Rush, I won't be boycotting NFL for three reasons. My wife loves it so it will be on no matter what I say. Second, 48" of supper, super sweet plasma HiDef TV. And lastly, dangit, I love watching football!
Other than Rush & Checkett, no one knows who's in the group. Its all confidential while the deal is being worked through.
What we do at my house is turn down the sound (not off, but low enough so they're basically back ground noise) and then we announce it ourselves while we watch.
We've got a DVR, so we can show our own slo-mo replays too!
But you'll continue your Whole Foods boycott I bet. Support only those that think like you and call yourself tolerant. Its the liberal way. You are so enlightened.
All you NFL fans now is the time to become an NHL fan!
A spine, apparently. Every post you've put on here has been some defeatist, snarky remark about how everybody's corrupt and hypocritical, blah blah blah, while never giving your own opinions and beliefs in anything. It's easier for you to make some cynical generalization about people than stand up for yourself.
Piece of advice – nobody ever got anywhere by being wishy-washy. Pick the right side or pick the wrong side, but for God's sake, pick a side.
Sooners? Really? From your name I always had the impression you were a Kansas fan.
Hey there apolitical observer you neglect to realize that the NFL is a product that adds nothing to our lives, it is simply a game played for nothing more than our entertainment. And as such its existence, or nonexistence, would not change a thing in your daily life or mine. Are you actually advocating a draft of high school and college graduates into the various professions? Wow, I want to live in that society! You also neglect to point out that it is not really opened to everyone, since 99% of our population lacks the size, strength, and athletic ability to be competitive in that sport. If everyone could throw a pass with the same accuracy as Peyton Manning then I guarantee you NFL salaries would more closely reflect those of Home Depot. But again, you are correct in your original assessment of the NFL implementing socialist ideas, although I can make a pretty strong case against revenue sharing i.e. Detroit Lions. You know another place where socialist ideas work very well for the greater good??? How about Prisons! Ah, but that might be racist of me considering the number of NFL players who frequent them.
Do you know why Rush plays that parody? Yep, I didn't think you would.
And go ahead, buy all the NFL stuff you can. You'll have that much less money in your pocket. Thing is, I don't think you'll do what you're threatening….in fact, I KNOW you won't.
How well does that socialist thing work in the NFL again? The only reason it can work is because it is a closed system fueled by CAPITALISM. And they have NO competition. If they had to compete with another league to get players, you better believe that the cap and revenue sharing would be out the window. Trying to say because it works in a sports league is proof it can work in real life is just idiotic. Be socialist with your own money. Give all yours away before telling my congressman what I should do with mine.
That person is as sharp as a bowling ball……
The reporters have already been backing off. The threat, requested by Rush's fans but not directly by him, was enough to do the job. Plus his research folks found the origin of the quotes and have already dealt with that person.
Besides, what do you expect from a media outlet like CNN who will fact-check an SNL skit but won't bother to find out if what Rush said was true or not?
The NHL? You racist….
GO FLYERS!!!!!!
Yay! Another Sooner! And I'm with you. I never cared about the NFL. People like Michael Vick and Brett Favre made the NFL a joke to me long before this happened.
Maybe it's time for red state & blue state NFL teams that can represent people on the left or right. If the NFL wants to get into the political arena, that would be the way to go. I could then support the teams that have a conservative "bent", and boo the teams that are liberal. We could have the super-election-bowl every 4 years to determine the who the president will be. Of course a few of the teams would have to be moved around to give the appearance of parity, but that would give the census takers full time jobs. I haven't figured out all the logistics to doing this, but I'm sure many out there would have some good suggestions!
When the Baltimore Colts snuck off to Indianapolis in the middle of the night and it was allowed to stand, I lost all respect for the NFL. I hardly watch anymore, even when guys from my college team play there.
Nope… k8 = kate, blu = my fave color and jay = part of my middle name…
I came up with it a long time before I was a Sooner…
So if anyone sees this name around the internet, it's most likely me…
Yup, I may not have been Sooner born or bred, but one day I will be Sooner dead…
It's my alma mater… and my choices where either OU or TAMU… and being from Raiderland there was no way on God's green earth I was becoming an Aggie…
and then I fell in love with the school… in particular the former School of Geosciences (which is where I started and then it split)
The Steelers are about "integrity"? Wow … that's news to me. Didn't the Rooneys acquire the Steelers on some gambling episode? And some "integrity": They claim to have a zero-tolerance policy, which they enforced when Cedric Wilson got in trouble, but when a star like James Harrison beats his wife, things change a bit, don't they?
I don't hate Dan Rooney — I've always appreciated his commitment to the pro-life movement. BUT THEN, he openly supports the most radical pro-abortion candidate in history — all because he gave a speech in Iowa that the man liked. That's really sticking to your principles.
As for Jerry Jones — he owns a FRANCHISE. He is not accountable for the other loser teams — he should not have to share his revenue with the Chiefs. "The entity" as you put it is better when owners like Jones elevate the level of competition. Not when "league" people bring everyone to the same level in the name of collectivism. If every owner was like Jerry Jones, the league would be much better.
The Rooneys pitched revenue sharing since the '40s, because they owned a dog-crap franchise all the way to the Steel Curtain years — look at the year-by-year records … they're pathetic. They — and the Meras — didn't want to be held accountable for their teams stinking.
I'm sorry, is football played on any day but Saturdays in the Fall (not counting those mid-week lunacies that is)????
I'm not sure I'd agree in your assessment of my posts as 'snarky', but I will concede that in the spirit of civility (as opposed to insulting people I've never met for daring to have a viewpoint that does not fall exactly in line with my own).
You seem to be convinced that there are only 2 options in any given scenario: A & notA.
Dualism is an effective tool to compare and contrast, but it's a dead end.
Here's a piece of advice for you: To be truly open-minded, one must consider close-mindedness a viable option.
You're wasting your breath. Useful idiots are useful because they're idiots. They'll believe whatever they're told to believe by their handlers.
I am right there with you! It will not be allowed on in my house.
Already decided. I'm not really a sports fan but was going to host a superbowl party at my place. That's not happening now.
Sorry ManicOtter, but you're wronger than wrong. I am a centrist/moderate which is code for social liberal, fiscal conservative. I have a Democrat's yard sign in my yard (a black Democrat, by the way) because the Republican running against him is a tax and spender who, when I voiced my opinion, basically told me to shut up. This was, of course, two years before he ran again. He thought I'm as dumb as the rest of the voters; that I'd forget. WRONG. But he is the ONLY Democrat I'm going to vote for this election (I live in VA). I am in fact friendly with one of the men running for deligate but he's running as a Democrat and my protest this year is I'm voting straight Republican ticket just because I despise what's going on in DC. (VA traditionally has moderate Democrats in state offices). In a word, by ya'll disparaging moderates/centrists, you're shooting yourself in the foot. We hate Socialism/communism/Marxism as much as you do, we just don't think the state has any right in people's personal lives any more than they do in our wallets.
There are a few players I enjoy watching so if they happen to be on Sunday, when I'm not busy I'll watch.
I haven't bought any NFL merchandise for years, not even a ticket. I will watch the games on Sunday, that's about as much "support" I give them. I don't plan on buying any "pickup trucks" or "beer" so their Ads are a waste of time, but if they want to waste their money on the Ads so that I can get Free NFL that's fine with me.
Its only free entertainment for us, and with the internet we've got plenty to chose from.
I think my brain would.
Time for a new league? But this time no PC crap… period!
Not watching NFL does nothing. Boycotting the sponsors and refusing to buy NFL paraphernalia does.
Oh, it's working alright. In the last 9 years, 2 teams have won 5 Super Bowls. That's nor parity. Because free-agency is a buyers' market, players' movements is limited. It's simply socialism for the owners.
In baseball — a FREE MARKET enterprise — 8 teams have won the World Series in 9 years. AND all but two teams in ALL of baseball have made it to the playoffs in the new format. No matter what system it it, the Royals and Pirates will stink.
Baseball has also watched its attendance increase each year until tis season.
You think collectivism is working for the NFL, but its fans don't care. It's a game for the masses, where people can watch men bash each other in the head every Sunday and Monday. Astute fans know that the game is being played at a very average level right now. The truly dynamic game is being played in the college ranks at the moment.
If you want to watch run, run pass all day, watch the NFL. It you want ingenuity, watch college football.
Interesting that you consider LImbaugh "polarizing" when he's basically presenting the conservative viewpoint. What's in play here is that for twenty or so years, the Left owned the media with no contradictory viewpoints allowed – a token here and there maybe (think Stossel on ABC) but for the main part nonending "liberal tell" as Nolte described it. I doubt most of us even realized we were being propagandized. I didn't for sure. Then, all of a sudden, while looking for an oldies but goodies rock station that had moved, I stumbled on Rush Lumbaugh and here was a man saying much of what I was thinking and thinking I had to be the only one. (Conservative/Libertarian views were never brought up because all of us thought we were out there on a limb by ourselves). Rush Limbaugh changed that. He infuriates me sometimes and I turn him off in a fury (I'm a moderate and he saws awful things about us that are not true).
No, Rush's sin is he gave conservatives a voice. Suddenly WE had someone attacking the wacky lefties the way the wacky lefties attacked us.
NFL football came on the other Sunday and this long faced wack job appeared on the screen discussing football. At first I didn't know who he was, but then I realized — here's Keith Olbermann, idiot child of NBC, making like he belongs commentating on a football game. Almost as amusing as our Dear Leader winning the Nobel prize. By the way, this just in. Barack just got the Nobel in medicine for getting a flu shot. Rumor is that he also won the Betty Crocker bake off after eating a Twinkie on AF One.
The NFL showing that socialist ideas work??? It works only because of the capitalist idea of providing a product that people will PAY for. Let's try paying all players the league minimum & see how that socialist idea works. As a long time fan of Rush's I am sure he is not boycotting the NFL. He sees it for what it is- a bunch of whiney leftists trying to squelch any voice that doesn't agree with them (Sarah Palin). He was ready for the firestorm, Checkett was not. The funny thing is, the big winner in all this is Rush- & don't think he didn't know that going in. The guy's a genius!
Tennis anyone?
We've had two weeks of spectacular entertainment with the Peiking Open followed by the Shanghai Open.
The male players have beefed up, hit the ball a ton, and use guile and strategy to win a point. (In truth, the female players have beefed up, too).
Djokovic and Davydenko played jaw dropping tennis in the semis in Shanghai. A lot more fun than watching a bunch of Neanderthals who can barely walk and chew gum at the same time run into each other head first.
And besides, Oldermann doesn't commentate!
Note that I said 'some' ideas. I'm not here as an -ist of any sort; I don't believe there is one right way for all things to be done. But the NFL succeeds, in no small part, because it finds a '3rd way', a mixture of capitalist and socialist ideas.
But let me apologize in advance if the suggestion that viewpoints from both 'sides' of an issue have merit is anathema to your existence.
Where is the pay and profit Czar regulating the NFL? I thought they were politically correct. Why are some teams allowed to win more than others. Everyone should be all equal under the new hope and change to the collective? Why are some teams allowed a better stadium but a bad team? The tickets are too high priced for the poor and they can't even watch a blacked out game on TV. What happened to the morals and ethics ?
I don't believe in public boycotts. There is very personal. But, after 40 years I ceased watching the NFL last week just as you did. I had a great day. I got my fall planting completed and watched some soccer. I don't care what others do but for me, I agree 100% that the commisioner's comments were unnecessarily divisive. There was no need for him to comment. He could have let the owners kill it in a vote. I was also offended that no owners or players stood up for Rush who is a huge football fan and whose love of the game kept me watching NFL last year when I got disgusted with my team.
Good by NFL.
Yeah, but we have to keep trying to cure the useful idiots of they're particular ailment. I used to be one, so I know it's possible.
Ironically, here's hoping for change.
You moron how are you going to afford all that mdse on your government check….shouldn't you be spending that hard earned dough on liquor and hos?
That is why I would say, give up an up or down vote. Let the owners make that business decision. The commissioner didn't give him the chance to get that vote. That is what angered me. I don't think anyone would object to an up or down vote based on the business interests of the owners.
Mr. Jena, I am right there with you sir. Excluding the times I was deployed with the U.S. Navy during the early 1980's, this past weekend was the first time since 1967 I did not watch professional football games during the NFL season. I have attended 100's of games throughout this country since I was was a child sitting at old Municipal Stadium in Kansas City (including the Christmas Day game between the Dolphins & Chiefs, longest in history) but will not do so again, nor will I spend any more money on officially liscensed NFL products for my grandchildren. The NFL has become a cesspool for liberalism at the rate they are goiung I expect them to do away with MVP trophies because it wil make those who do not win it feel bad. I won't go into the ridiculous penalities for touching a QB for I would hate to hurt their feelings. I will just say that if Tom Brady played during the days of Starr, Unitas, Jerguson, Tarkenton or Dawson perhaps he wouldn't mind having his mommy have to wash out his jersey. The arena football league picked a bad season not to play, for Americans love real football without politics.
"If you want to watch run, run pass all day, watch the NFL."
Beg to differ. Here's an example: This past Sunday the Eagles ran the ball 14 times and passed it 46 times…..the game sucked anyway unless you're a stinkin Raiders fan….
I don't think I'd call him a moron, as much as brain washed, I know, I used to be in that club. You're given the talking points, taught how to insult, and sent out to the trenches.
But after a while, the talking points no longer make sense, and the insults get old, and then you start to think.
The vibe I get from this guy is he's close to the tipping point of coming out of the swamp, but he still has the liberal tactics reflexes. I've been making it a point to reach out and see if I can help him out of the bog.
I would think that CNN's fact checking CNN would play a prominent part in any libel lawsuit. Rush's legal problem would be proving "actual malice". Failure to fact check does not constitute actual malice per the US Supreme Court. But the fact that CNN would fact check SNL but intentionally ignore checking out extremely questionable race quotes might meet the test of actual malice. Perhaps he could get the US Supreme Court to get is head out of its collective rear end and change the actual malice standard. It might help discourage the Olbermens and Becks of the world and make public discourse a little bit more measured. In any event should Rush sue and win (10% chance) he would recover millions if not hundreds of millions.
Because as far as modern liberals go, Rush is already guilty, so it doesn't matter how much they insult him.
Remember back to 2nd, 3rd grade, that part of your life. Remember how the class would all agree to pick out one single kid, and it was alright for every one to pick on and hate that one kid? That's what this is. The liberals think using that mind set, and they're just too dumb to realize not every kid in the class is on their side.
Arrested development.
right on brother!
Boycott the NFL? Oh sure, just when Favre has taken our Vikes to 6 & 0. Great timing!
Socialism for the owners… exactly. And what was it that Rush wanted to be? An owner?
Again, both sides are full of hypocrites. But pretending that your 'side' is not exhibits a sever lack of self-awareness.
Severe lack of self awareness, of course. Although perhaps self awareness can be severed, as well?
Actually Vick is getting the minimum this year. His name is mud, no endorsements, verbally abused where ever he goes. I don;t understand why the Eagles signed him at all. They don't need him and he brings nothing to the team except bad publicity and the occasional dork protestor….
But NEXT year he could stand to make millions but I doubt the Eagles are going to keep him.
And that's why I don't watch games on NBC. Olbermann is a complete POS but it's ok that he's a POS because he's a liberal nutbag POS…..
Jena,
We have the Bengals. It's as easy for us to drop football games as it is for us to drop a flaming bag of dog doo.
Running scared? I don't know what you'd call a casual "My bad" after the damage is already done, but I don't call that "running scared" — and I sure as f___ don't call it an apology, either.
I have to agree. Sundays in the fall are for football, after all is said and done they still have to play the games. And I loves me some football….
Am I missing something?
That your Bill Hicks quotes don't take us by surprise, perhaps?
seriously??
