Time for a Comedy Czar?
by Jeffrey JenaI love being a stand-up comic. I have gotten to travel all over the world. I have met and worked with a number of my idols in the business. I have been my own boss and set my own schedule since I quit my last “real” job way back in 1980. I get to use my God-given creative talents to make a living. What’s not to like?
The thing I like most about comedy is that is the last bastion of laissez-faire capitalism in America. There is no minimum wage and no salary cap. On the downside there is no pension plan and no health care. I get no sick days, no paid holidays, no personal days, and there is no family leave. I have to provide for myself and I do it gladly because there are no rules, no government regulations, and no unions.
My fear is that at the rate President Obama is going through the economy it won’t be long before he realizes that there are still a few Americans having some fun and outside his control. He is well on his way to ending the American automobile industry, private banking and nationalizing energy. Over at the Supreme Court we will soon have yet another activist judge who believes that equality of opportunity should yield equality of result and that if it doesn’t then there must be bias in the system.
It’s only a matter of time until the Obama administration will discover that there is an unregulated business in America and move to bring the comedy industry under control. His first move will be to appoint a Comedy Czar who will be responsible for all regulation joke telling, writing and the hiring and firing of comedians. He will address the inequity in pay issue. Why should Jerry Seinfeld and Kevin James receive more than I get for doing the same job?
The Comedy Czar will need to address the problem that women are underrepresented in the stand-up profession. Soon, thanks to the enlightened policies of the Obama administration, 51% of all stand-up comics will be women no matter how funny they are. At the same time the Czar may notice that other groups, like Jews and African-American are over represented. The government, backed by the courts will institute programs to assure that many humor challenged groups like Germans and the Dutch have access to the comedy profession. Why should lack of talent and hard work stop people from their dreams?
The Comedy Czar will also have to regulate who gets to use what jokes. Is it fair that some comedians are better writers and performers than others? Is it fair that the opening act has no great lines while the headliner has forty? Soon all comedians will pool their jokes for common use.
Thanks to card check there will soon be a National Union of Comedic Performers and all comedians will be doing the same amount of time on a show. They will also be forced to take their breaks at the appointed time. If that falls in the middle of a joke don’t worry, he’ll be back after a quick fifteen minute rest.
The Comedy Czar will control all aspects of stand-up except being funny. That unimportant aspect of the comedy business will be eliminated through careful government planning and regulation.

Hehehehe, Perfect!!! Great article.:)
Heap the ridicule, gang. Laugh these clowns into oblivion.

don't give 'em any ideas…
Did the entire Thursday Open Thread just disappear?
Who needs a comedy czar when you've already got Obama and Biden? When they lose in the next election, they could become a comedy team in Vegas.
Great article and it sounds like "The Fairness Doctrine"
Yesterday, Open Thread disappeared several times for me.
no but others sometimes do
hitting refresh sometimes work, but we have been through this before.
I just want technology to do what it was created to do
"…equality of opportunity should yield equality of result…" Wait a minute, it doesn't?
I don't know. Do you think that would be fair to Maher? He already has the bitter thing mapped out, and now he'd have to compete for it.

The most important thing the comedy czar should do is something he probably would not do: Make it mandatory for stand up comedians and late night hosts to make jokes about the current administration.
Aharris, I think the comedy team of Obama & Biden would give Maher a run for his money. Especially if they include a bunny rabbit or at least some juggling.
Well, there is nothing funny about what the Occupant in Chief is trying to pull anyway, why break a trend?
Although they have already "created or saved" many tens of thousands of jokes, er, "community organizers."
My gosh, you're right, Jeffrey. And where does it end?
Sheryl Crow: toilet paper Czar
Jeffery, there are things more important than being funny. I as a “comedy” consumer, have committed myself to laugh no matter what the government comedian’s shtick happens to be, especially women. Equality of result is much more important than, quality of result, to be a better citizen, …we must all laugh, and now!
You read my mind!
They seem to have mastered a "Who's To Blame On First" routine.
And when the blame game shtick goes sour, they can always revert to the "I inherited this mess" or perhaps dip their toes into more of the "America sucks" routine. That's sure to draw the laughs. In fact, Biden can say just about anything and draw the laughs. They'll make a fortune.
And if they add Barney Frank, they can do a Yakov Smirnov thing. . . "In America, banks regulate you."
You know, I laugh when ever I see Harry Reid on TV. But it's unintentional on his part.
Comedy show of horrors last night at the White House
BTW – was permission from National Semiconductor and R.A. Pease given to use that picture?
I think Comedy is too important to leave to just one tsar. I propose a troika of clown overseers. Barney can be tsar of the homophobic race baiting jokes. Waxman can be tsar of deformity and uglyness jokes, and Olbermann can be the tsar of irony, satire and administrational snipes. The three stooges will bring the comic community into conformity and on a short leash, so everyone can laugh equally, but not too much.
"Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right and here I am, stuck in this hell with you!"
Hey! I'm of German descent, so maybe this could be my big break into the world of stand-up! I'm stoked! Ich bin stoked!
Danke, damen und herren. People say Obama is our first black president, but really, he's bi-racial. That means half of him is black victimhood, and half of him is white liberal guilt. (Old material, I know.) Off the top of my head, I can't really recall him playing the black victimhood card … that's what he has Eric Holder for.
Would that joke be banned by the Comedy Czar? Or Czarina?
Weird, …me to!

Can you imagine the suit that would go with that job?
Nothing points out the stupidity of socialism and the Obama approach to government more than making fun of it. You should be free to get the extra dollars above and beyond Seinfeld and James that you so richly deserve. The women percentage is inflated because they mistakenly included Wanda Sykes and Whoopi.
That pretty well says it all, Jack.
Any and all, Czechoslovakia did have a kind of comedy czar. There's a pretty obscure BBC -created movie about it from the early 80's – "Tiny Revolutions". Well worth hunting up for its parallels to now. Of course, that was back when the BBC was against totalitarianism.
Well Jeff, I hope there aren't dire consequences from this (very funny) article. There are actually people in government who will take this seriously. There are hundreds of underemployed congressional staffers and White House "policy analysts" who could hear of this and say GREAT IDEA! They would say to themselves "Hey – We can control all those jokes those retrograde rednecks out there are telling about our Most Beloved and Benevolent Leader. We could create a Comedy Control Commission that could regulate content, wages, working conditions, content, comedian quotas, content and content. Al Franken could be Comedy Czar in addition to his other duties (whatever they are.)" Beware what you wish for, even in jest. Anything is possible these days.
That mandate will go into effect on January 19, 2013.
I thought Mr Jena need never worry about comedy regulation, until he said being funny was not a requirement.
Perhaps the Obama/Biden ticket can incorporate this twist: Obama in whiteface and Biden in blackface.
Ouch. Is that crossing the line?
It would be easier if I wasn't so busy crying…
"The government, backed by the courts will institute programs to assure that many humor challenged groups like Germans and the Dutch have access to the comedy profession."
That's a good line.
After Obama is done with that, can he appoint a basketball czar? As a 5'11'' white guy with little basketball skill, I think it is completely unfair that only those with natural and/or learned skills get to play in the NBA.
Jeffrey
Then stand up comics will become Vogons (Green, Ugly and Bad Poets)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/hitchhikers/vogonpoetry...
Here is where the government will generate your material
From the Guide:
Poetry, well written, can be a spiritually uplifting experience. Badly written, it can be an experience of buttock-clenching horror.
The third worst poetry in the universe is written by Vogons, and frequently used as a form of torture.
The absolute worst poetry was written by Nancy Pelosi. It involved decaying the US banking system. Luckily, it was destroyed during the demolition of the US economy.
You really should not put ideas like this out there into the blogosphere. There are plenty of underemployed Congressional staffers and White House "policy analysts" who probably pine for a "long overdue overhaul of America's archaic and unregulated comedy industry." The "Comedy Czar" (heading an agency with some Orwellian title like "Commission for Responsible Comedy Development") could control pay, bookings and, most of all, material. They could insure that "nasty and mean-spirited" jokes would be subject to "pre-performance scrutiny." Certainly anything that seeks to ridicule the person of Our Great and Beneficent Leader would be gone in a nano-second. What do you think? Wanda Sykes or Al Franken for Comedy Czar. either would be a natural.
Good thing you suck Jena, no worries buddy.
Thank God I'm Irish!
