Boxer Demotes Herself From ‘Ma’am’ to ‘Senator’
by Jeffrey JenaIn the spirit of full disclosure I have to say that I find pretty much anything Senator Boxer says irritating. However, her recent disrespectful and condescending request to a Brigadier General — who had respectfully called her “Ma’am” — to call her “Senator,” made me laugh.
Generally speaking, I will call someone whatever they want to be called as long as they are willing to return the courtesy. My given name is Jeffrey but you can call me just about any variation of that you want as long as you do it in friendly manner. However, if your name is Charles and you insist on me calling you “Charles” and not “Charlie” or “Chuck” then you will only call me Jeffrey. If you are a Doctor or a Professor and insist I use your title when addressing you then you must address me as Mister.
I also have a few nicknames and if you know me well enough and long enough you can call me by one of those. My golf buddies can call me any number of names that are not printable here as long as they are also marveling at my shot-making ability at the same time. I also try to treat everyone I meet in daily life with respect. I address everyone I do not know with the title “Sir” or “Ma’am.” The cop who pulls me over for speeding or the person who takes my money at the grocery store get the same treatment.
I recently did a show at a military base where the commanding officer was a woman. I was unsure how to address this much decorated military person so I asked a tough-looking guy with a bunch of stripes on his arm to guide me. He told me that “Ma’am” was the proper term of address, just as I would say “Sir” if the commander were a man. Then he added some information for which I had not asked.
“Don’t address her only by her rank.” He said, “That would tell her you think she is a substandard officer.” In the military it seems that insulting an officer to his or her face isn’t tolerated very well. Military people, being a resourceful bunch, have developed a system for letting an officer know that they don’t think too much of them. They use the term of address which least fulfills the requirement of military respect which is using only the person’s title.
Imagine, for example, you are an enlisted man and you are under the command of a Lieutenant Smith. If Lt. Smith is a competent leader you would address him as “Sir,” “LT” or “Lt. Smith.” If Lt. Smith is an arrogant moron you would always address him simply as “Lieutenant.”
So when General Walsh quickly came back with “Senator” and not “Senator Boxer” I laughed because I knew what he meant; this is a substandard person for whom I have no respect!
Let’s all address her as “Senator” from now on.

Why does CA keep electing these idiots?
God, no kidding Hank, great question. I live in California – and I don't get it.
Look at any large city or state that has been run into the ground. You will see it has been predominantly Democrat run for a long time. The track record these buffoons leave behind them is one of pathetic mismanagement and ineptness.
And yet – - they keep getting put back into power.
/shakes head in wonder.
because it's the left coast and if you're going to san francisco wear some flowers in your hair, you're gonna meet a lot of mental people there (or something like that.)
Hey man! Not all Californians vote for the idiots, especially us southerners. Although Arnold is borderline…
I've got a few titles for her that she's definitely earned, but I wont repeat them here out of respect for those who read and post here.
Case in point here in Michigan: Detroit
we didn't have much other choice at the time (yes I was living in So Cal during greyout Davis's recall).
Why not call her the moniker she has truly earned: yenta !!
Just ask Condi Rice . . .
Later, we will revisit this lousy STOCK BROKER'S (just like Martha Stewart) anti-goyim, communistic indoctrination at Camp Kinder Ring!
She earned it alright, thanks to Alan Cranston's cancer and Keating 5 corruption.
I do feel trapped by these idiots pretending to represent all Californians, and embarassed.
Must go now: Pelosi, Feinstein, Boxer, and Waxman. Must not win next election: Newsome, Villaraigosa.
Maybe it's something in the water…Oh, wait, they shut that off……
Paul Rodriguez would be proud….
Sorry dude, didn't mean to lump y'all together.
Why does MOST of CA keep electing these idiots?
better?
Ugh… Gavin Newsome.
"Whether you like it or not!"
Never have more arrogant & idiotic words been uttered by a politician.
You represent the people, "Mayor" (note the lack of surname). You seem to not grasp – - it is all about WHETHER OR NOT WE LIKE IT, that is your sole job.
Arrogant jerk.
Check out the photo-shop I did of her highn-ass and you will get my feelings about this California Joke.
I live just outside of Philadelphia and I've been watching Philly burn for years. All under the democrat watch too.
We must be channeling each other….
Must be caffiene induced.
hanging chads? *da-da-dum*
I can' tunderstand why these politicians go out of their way to make sure they look stupid and arrogant. It's not like those are new concepts to most voters when they consider them. There are a few who still go ga-ga over these office holders but most if us remember that these guys dress themselves just like we do. They aren't special.
But what Boxer really did in this ridiculous exchange was show her true contempt for our military. By trying to dress down a General in front of her colleagues and the world, she made herslf look pretty bad.
–"Never have more arrogant & idiotic words been uttered by a politician. "–
I give you Prez Obama:
–Obama said his message [concerning Iran's turmoil] has been consistent, and he shot back at Republican critics who are calling him timid: "Only I'm the president of the United States." —

What the Senator meant to say was, "Don't address me as ma'am, address me as Senator, because having the title of Senator makes me more important than anyone who doesn't." I'm glad to see she got the 'respect' she wanted. The Senator is a prime example of someone who has been in politics too long and has overestimated their own self importance. I'd like to suggest term limits to help bring their noses down from the upper atmoshere.
We're stuck with three of these idiots–Pelosi, Feinstein and Boxer. Boxer and Pelosi vie for dumbest of the three, but Boxer wins in the Emily Post category. She doesn't know the difference between respect and obeisance. It's called the arrogance of ignorance. She's too dumb to know how ridiculous she is, so she enhances her stupidity by insulting a true servant of the people. And in case anybody has any doubts–I didn't vote for any of them. Not all Californians are on drugs.
I'd give my boxers (wince) to have heard this exchange:
Boxer: "You know, do me a favor. Could say 'Senator' instead of 'ma'am?'"
Walsh: "Yes."
Boxer: "It's just a thing; I worked so hard to get that title, so I'd appreciate it. Yes, thank you."
Walsh: "Yes ma'am."
It sounds like she was convincing herself that she's not female. I shudder to think of the "hard work" she might have done to get that title.
I think you mean Newsance and Needstogosa.

Boxer just exposed an underlying ideological thrust that I haven't yet seen anyone else mention.
60s radicals grew up learning disdain for the folks that the KGB and left most wanted to undermine.
Whereas I grew up understanding that "Sir" and "Mam" were a show of respect, the left ridiculed any who would use that format: mostly Southerners, Midwesterners and military folks.
Boxer shows her followers that they are not supposed to use the same language as the "hicks." As these followers absorb her condescension, they eventually internalize it and spread the teaching of the destruction of the folks who maintain basic American values.
If CA wakes up, then I'm sure we'll all happily support her demand to be called by the title she's earned: "ex-Senator".
Her Petulance, Ms. BOXer, must go. She's 'worked so hard' for the title Senator? Ha. Whined so hard is more like it. Olympic athletes work hard. Career military men work hard for their titles. Politicians rarely work hard. She's merely been elected to a cushy position. The only printable title I want to call Her Midgetry is Ex-Senator.
Oh, I think that Ray Nagin, the mayor of New Orleans, could give Newsom a run for his money in arrogant & idiotic words uttered department.
why won't anyone come to boxer's defense? my gosh look at that picture of her, she's got a wonderful thumb. even she thinks so!
Maybe not all Californians are on drugs. . . but apparently enough are to keep these three in office.
Sounds like the makings of a game show! Mayor Password.
Remember that line from No Country for Old Men? "When you stop hearing sir or ma'am, the rest is sure to follow."
she stuck in her thumb,
and pulled out a plumb,
and said what a good boy am I.
No wonder California is in such trouble. Ahhhhhhhh, these dems
"Let’s all address her as “Senator” from now on"
Because Barbara Boxer is in the military? No, wait, there's something funny somewhere in this 500 work knock-knock joke.
Being a Navy Veteran, when I heard this exchange I almost fell out of my chair laughing. In my years in the Navy 99% of the officers I served under and with were great, deserving and getting my respect. There were a few however that were clueless and they were simply LT. or Ensign. Most of the time they knew we were showing a lack of respect, but we were doing within the boundaries of military protocol and could do nothing about it. The funny thing is the General did the same thing to the "Senator" and she had know idea that she was being insulted. I would be surprised if anyone from the Military ever refers to her as anything put plain Senator again. "And yes "Senator" you deserve it".
I cannot believe the arrogance of Boxer. She needs to be put in her place as to her relevance to the world. Do you think she would ever show that sort of disrespect to another higher authority? Of course she did , to former President Bush. At the same time she would be kissing the butts of all the celebrities that donate to her cause.
In my local neighborhood, the children show their respect by addressing the adults by Mr., Mrs. or Ms. and their first name. The children understand the value of showing respect and being polite, and the adults offer it back when they are addressed. I guess Boxer never learned that simple life lesson.
Maybe I am just getting old but being called "sir" doesn't really bother me much anymore. Being carded for smokes just causes me to shake my head in amusement. If I were Babs I would rather be called anything but "senator". I mean really. Given the choice between "whorehouse piano player" or "senator" which is more deserving of respect?
I've been saying that for years. We really must defeat Newsome, though.
Well if Ma'am is good enough for the Queen of England it ought to be good enough for Babs.
The Democrats have somehow convinced a large segment of the population that their spouses will be raped and their children eaten alive if the Republicans ever come to power. Another large segment also knows that if the Republicans come to power it'll suddenly get much harder for them to coast along on welfare.
Or a good knife fight to see who gets the crown of complete a-hole….
Thanks for the info Jeffrey! I'll have to try this on the administration at my U. They won't get it, but I'll have a private chuckle.
Hmmm, wait a minute. I had a couple of students last year that just called me "Professor." I'll have to check to see if they were in the military . . .
What? A strange guy with an air gun thingy?
And not the good drugs either….
Because too many Americans unthinkingly support their party like a sports team. They fill in the ballot based on "R" or "D" vice what the person stands for or how they vote when in office. It amazes me when I meet someone who proudly states they supported Mr./Ms. X in the last election and than are suprised when I point out that Mr./Ms. X voted opposite of what the person professes to believe. Incumbents have too much of an advantage, congress has the lowest approval ratings ever and we still re-elect over half the incumbents.
Oh, and the Motor Voter registration and deliberate recruiting of illegals and fraud by community organizers doesn't help things.
I'll see your Detroit and raise you Vegas. We got the sniveling Harry Reid.
I live in Maxine Water's district which means our drugs are supplied by the CIA. So I've got that going for me…which is nice.
Why not combine them? Celebrity Mayoral Knife Fight. . .
And a bad haircut…
Ok, now that's funny! (Though I am sorry that you live in Maxine Waters district. . . that's not funny. No one should have to suffer through that.)
You mean like skanky LSD or crystal-lite Meth?
Maybe things will improve when the legislature starts regulating the fat content of the marijuana. They'll also be raising the tax on regular coke, so that more people will be using coke with no sugar (but a higher baking soda content).
I like where your head's at!!!!
Are you saying that you can get second hand weight gain from marijuana?
Great, now I'll be trying to remember all of the words for the rest of the day! LOL
She doesn't deserve the respect of the military… If she had any sense at all (which has obviously been replaced with her self-centered importance) then she would realize that the Gen. was being very respectful…
Thank you. I like where it's at too. . . just above the shoulders.
Except the ones that keep voting for her…..
I meant whip-its and huffing spray paint…..
As opposed to where Boxer's head is….
This Disrespectful Brooklyn Born Leather Faced Self -Absorbed Gov't Macher, this Nebbish Pisher Yutz isn't good enough to Brush the Lint off General Walsh's Dress Blues or Shine his Shoes before He goes out for a Night of Dancing with his Wife much less anything else.I Have Faith that Senator MA'AM'S Day is Coming.
Oooooo, that's low. . . literally.
I stand corrected.
Ah, like sniffing cheez wiz. . .
Yeah… I would have loved to hear that as well…
Queen Maxine has a position for life. Every two years I go and play the old lady from The Princess Bride who stands up in the crowd and yells "Booooo-booooo-bow down to the garbage queen!" Then I run like hell before I get shivved by one of her poorly educated yet physically imposing supporters. The men are intimidating as well.
My hat goes off to you for having the fortitude to stay out there.
Once again, I apologize sincerely for laughing at your pain. LOL!!
I had an English Professor that INSISTED that we call her Dr…. Not Miss, Ms, Mrs. or Professor but Dr. and she will answer to nothing else (Her words not mine)… I hated her.
Shouldn't that last line read "and said what a good Senator am I"? She has worked so hard for that title…
Jeffrey – great picture! She looks like she is giving the "thumbs up" sign after playing "Lucky Pierre and Unfortunate Antoinette" with the Jolly Green Giant!
There’s no telling where that thumbs been?
if i used that, I would have to change the line to Pulled out ALL the plumbs
to bad he didn't stay in Vegas.
Or eating paste.
yeah, she acts like pi$$ing away other people's money by the long ton involves heavy lifting…
*LOVE THE PHOTO WITH THIS ARTICLE*!!!
"Call-Me-Senator" Botoxer is indicating whether she has inserted her head in her own rectal orifice!
From the blurring of her thumb in the photo, it's obvious that she inserted her head deeply, and with vigor!!
They are all great arguments for Voter ID at the polls. I don't know anyone here in San Diego that votes for either Feinstein or Boxer, whether they consider themselves Democrat , Republican, or Independent. They're both like gum on your shoe. The just WILL NOT go away.
Boxer is under the delusion that being called "Senator" means something. What she doesn't realize is that most of the US Senate is a laughingstock.
hmmm Nagin and Newsom star in their very own sitcom: "the Gruesome Twosome"
I wish the general had responded:
"Whatever you say, toots."
that queen truly is one rat of unusual size
Drop her a love note like mine (http://jcrue.wordpress.com/2009/06/18/contact-bar... ):
" Ma’am,
By asking the general to call you “senator” instead of “ma’am” in my opinion was to take a demotion.
First, you were incredibly rude and condescending to the general who has sacrificed more and worked much harder to earn his stars than you have to earn your position. His achievements did not benefit from his spouse’s business profits, slimy political donations, and deceptive duplicitous rhetoric.
And to think that any Congress member would feel that they deserved any kind of respect after what you all have done to this nation is ludicrous.
We know who really serves this nation. And we know who serves themselves.
The general calling you “ma’am” was a compliment with which I do not agree. To ask him to call you “senator” only confirms why you most likely don’t deserve any laudatory titles except “the former senator from California”, much less “ma’am”.
Every last one of you on Capitol Hill deserve term limits and nothing else from the tax payers of this nation – no pensions, no health care, and nothing else that would be better provided to the least of the citizens of this nation than the most corrupt and egocentric of our citizens.
I will never be ashamed of my country. But I am ashamed of the people who govern it.
Sincerely…."
Dr. Evil
There's all the difference in the world, and Boxer is too dim to get it. "Sir" or "Major Smith" are expressions of professional respect. But plain "Major" is a subtle signal that you're just respecting the rank, and most definitely not the man (or woman) attached to it.
*Exception- the CO of a Naval vessel is always addressed as "Captain" (regardless of paygrade)- and that *is* a mark of respect.
It's been in Auntie's pie, pulling out a plumb

Troll says what?
yes, but accurate….
That's what is so frustrating about California: There is so much going for it and they run it into the ground with leftist politics and then send a bunch of halfwits to DC to ruin it for the rest of us. How does a state with the entertainment industry, Silicon Valley, agriculture, wine country, tourism, Big Oil (Chevron) among much else go bankrupt? It can't all be because of that green stuff they grow up in Humboldt County.
Fortunately at Virginia it is (or was) the rule that faculty are *never* addressed as "Doctor" or "Professor." Since "Mister" was good enougth for Mr. Jefferson, you see.
Touche" That's funny!
Dont ya just love double entendre's?
A bunch of sniveling babies. The only time they remove their head from their arse, is to suck on their thumbs.
ROTFLMAO! Please, guys, not at work! That was great!
I'm in CA as well – since 1994 – and I never voted for her or Feinstein or any of the other morons . . .well, okay, except for Ahnold . . . TWICE!
**facepalm** D'oh! I know, I know. Does it help that I really really regret it?
What's really amazing is that a state that passed Prop 1987 and Prop 8, still votes the Democrats in? How can they be conservative on the one hand and so stupid on the other?
Must be the full sun we get 12 months out of the year!
touche.
I stand corrected.
