I’m ‘Shocked’ But Still Take Full Responsibility
by Jeffrey JenaAs all the politicians, left and right, run around feigning indignation at the bonuses paid to a few AIG executives I am reminded of the scene in the movie “Casablanca” when Captain Renault closes down Rick’s Café American. As his deputies empty the casino in the back room he exclaims with stunned surprise, “I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!” He says this just as one of Sam’s employees brings him his winnings.
I am not sure what makes me angrier, that absolutely bogus attitude or their overwhelming incompetence, but that’s not what I want to write about today. I’m not going to write about a lot of stuff here. I am not going to write about fact that Chris Dodd wrote the rule that allowed these bonuses and then in perfect Clintonese quasi denied it when he said, “I can’t point a finger at someone who was responsible for putting those dates in. I can tell you this much, when my language left the Senate, it did not include it. When it came back, it did.” Then when confronted with his lie, he owned up to it. I won’t spend time on the fact he took a ton of campaign dough from AIG, headquartered in his state.
Let’s forget that while a number of people who are living large on the largess of the American taxpayer are clutching their chests in their best Fred Sanford impression for the TV cameras they continue to throw untold trillions into the nation debt and continue to fill legislation with pork and earmarks while they think we are distracted. Maybe Senator Grassley and a few of his friends could resign or commit suicide over that.
I haven’t got time to write about these same grandstanding politicians who pass unconstitutional laws and waste time while real issues need attention, like finally reading the stimulus bill and seeing what else is lurking in there. I will not bring up the fact that Obama could create five million jobs for American citizens by simply making employers follow Federal law.
Today I will focus on Mr. Timothy Geithner, the Secretary of the Treasury. This is the guy who was supposed to be so brilliant that we needed to overlook the fact he cheated on his taxes. Without him we had no chance of recovery from this black hole of an economy! After hearing how he was the only person in America who could save us I was praying he didn’t have a heart attack or stroke for then we would be lost. If he died who would replace this irreplaceable man? Perhaps America would simply vanish without him. It seems all his friends have vanished rather than take a job alongside him. Then again the may have used the same tax system the Secretary used.
I will focus on something he said that is often used by public figures that have either failed miserably or been caught with their hand in the cookie jar, “I take full responsibility!” Sometimes they use the “personal responsibility” variation. If they want you think they are really serious they will take “full and personal responsibility.”
In a move that is a favorite among incompetent politicians, failed and greedy CEOs and religious leaders caught with their pants down, Mr. Geithner has stepped up and taken, “full responsibility” for this AIG mess. Just once I would like a reporter to ask any of these scumbag CEOs, politicians, and assorted others who run to this position to explain exactly what that means. Does it mean you were the one who committed the acts and you are now ready to face the consequences? Does it mean that these acts were committed by those who you are supervising and since you did not or were not able to do your job you are stepping down?
Generally speaking it means; “I have been caught and there is so much evidence against me that only the feeble of mind would buy my defense, so I admit it was my fault. Can we now forget about it?”
Perhaps, the only thing phonier is when someone above the person taking “full or personal responsibility” states that they have “full confidence” in the person who is under fire. Usually the axe falls a few days later. Mr. Geithner, I think AIG is hiring but the bonus structure sucks, you might want to try Fannie Mae.

The practice of sleight of hand. Pay attention to the AIG bonuses, while billions are going into overseas banks and over to that peaceful group, Hamas. It also fosters the left's favorite thing: Class Envy. I read what some of those protesters said when riding out to the AIG big wig's houses. They wanted to know why those people didn't give them money, or give it back, and have it divided into portions, to people who needed it. Uhm, yeah. I felt like barfing when I read that story.
Regarding the crooked politicians, I'm more outraged with the voters who keep electing them.
http://the100mostannoyingthings.blogspot.com/
I had the same reaction. The sense of entitlement is nauseating.
So true, also how about the poor schlup giving evidence in congress and getting ripped a new one all for the princely sum of $1 per year!
Thank you
I find the reaction to theis whole thing to be rediculous. All these protests composed of the Useful Idiots.
But, then again maybe people focus on it because they can understand it, the rest is so confusing and difficult to understand. "I know we're getting screwed but just can't put my finger on it. "
either way, the ones responsible wont really pay the price. I predict a fall guy or two. But no real accountability.
If the Congress and new new POTUS have not confirmed what we already knew about politicians, then we are ALL blind as Gov Patterson is.
If the "crisis" was caused by bad lending standards and living above our means, then we will 'cure it" by encouraging more lending, bailing out the folks who helped get us here, and borrowing more money to fund it. It will all turn out in 8 years. Well, not really. Another 10 Trillion in the hole. Oh, and yes, we will INCREASE illegal immigration so that jobs are more PLENTIFUL?????
Who could possibly accept this explanation but the ignorant masses that we call voters.
I screamed myself hoarse, while watching all the political panel discussions yesterday. Not one pundit , conservative or liberal, pointed out the fact that Congress (all Democrats by the way) passed a bill they did not fully understand or read and the President of the United States signed a bill into law that he did not fully understand or read. They can honestly say they did not know because they signed a $785,000,000,000 spending bill that they did not read or understand and by the President's own admission, was FLAWED. Really, flawed!? How did that happen??? Dodd, Geithner, and Obama lied. They stood before the American people and lied right to our faces! If one person from AIG is harmed physically in anyway, they should be held criminally responsible.
This happens so often I sometimes wonder if the ones at the top who make the appointments know that they're going to need scapegoats down the road… and use that as a job qualification.
Just once, I'd love to see someone really fire back at the hypocrites up there asking question .. really really kept hoping Liddy would have just returend fire at those idiots with both guns blazing.
Mr. Jenna, I loved your analysis regarding the hypocrisy of "taking full and personal accountability." I thought A.I.G. was New York based rather than Connecticut, but the sentiment is the same regardless. Some of the bonuses may have gone to insurance executives who actually did earn them, by the way. Remember, A.I.G. was a very successful insurance company brought down by their C.E.O. and investment department who did not understand the incredible risk involved in over leveraging credit default swaps on mortgage based securities. As Churchill stated (paraphrased) " the vice of capitalism is it creates great wealth and distributes it unevenly. The virtue of socialism it creates misery and spreads it evenly."
So true. It's like we've entered some sort of Alice in Wonderland world where true becomes untrue, the impossible is taken as fact, and nobody takes responsibility for anything.
I wish that at least the Republicans would make these points. I just don't understand why they don't. How can every single one of them be a fool?
I was thinking the same thing, I watched part of the hearings and most of my reaction is unprintable here, especially when they took their break and Liddy was told something along the lines of,"We have a place for you to go to for the hour" in a tone and with a sneer that would have done a People's Court judge proud. And I don't mean Wopner, I mean the original People's Courts in Germany circa 1935.
It was sickening and I kept hoping Liddy would just let them have it too.
I'm told that new homes in the DC area actually come with scapegoats.
This situation reminds me of the millions of children who have been caught sneaking cookies from the cookie jar. Our leadership are the children and "we" the people are the not-so mindful parents. You ask the child if they took a cookie and they look up at you, melted chocolate and crumbs stuck to their cheeks, "Noooooo". Next you ask the child "Are you sure you didn't take a cookie?". The child replies "Noooooo". So you ask "So what's this all over your face and hands?". The child shrugs saying "I don't knoooow.". So as punishment you send them to their room without supper (as if they were hungry).
Our "leaders" have gotten away with so much for so long they honestly do expect us to be ignorant of what they are doing. We the people, at least the majority, are content to leave the children to themselves confident they can't get into too much trouble as long as we are within listening distance. The problem is that most of the time we really aren't listening and the only time we get worried is when there is silence. Whenever we do catch them acting up we shout and stomp around and they pretend to be afraid but under the veneer of feigned fear they are thinking about what they can get away with next.
"If one person from AIG is harmed physically in anyway, the three of them should be held criminally responsible."
I agree with you 110% there. The rabble rousing to deflect blame from the actual criminals towards people that make useful targets is a time honored tradition in some places. I just never thought I'd see the tactics being so blatantly embraced by the US Congress.
Update: Obama now says he "cannot govern out of anger" just because the public is outraged over the AIG bonus'. IS HE ON CRACK?? HE CAUSED THE ANGER!!! On second thought, this may be code for "Oops, I shouldn't trash the entire Constitution in my first 60 days in office". When is he going to learn when he feigns "outrage", his Greek chorus of followers follow with the pitchforks?
Well it does keep the lawn tidy and reduces the owner's carbon footprint some, well unless you wind up with a particularly gassy scapegoat at least.
Careful Bev, you're going to have an aneurism, and this a…hole isn't worth it.
Isn't that amazing that he can't fill the 14 assistant posts? I think you're right, I think all the potential applicants know the score and they don't want to be ruined.
There's nothing like a busload of community organizers drive up in front of your house, and demand the return of a bonus. It's like having too much starch in the shorts – sure it's fresh and crisp, but the chafing will leave you in pain later on..
Hwwwwooooooo. I just took a deep cleansing breath and I am calm now. Ohmmmmmmm, Ohhmmmmm. I am now in my happy place again….Thanks Andrew.
Ooh, manual lawnmowers. Saving the environment one scapegoat at a time!
Oh now that is a fine turn of phrase there, bravo sir!
There are alot of out of work Harvard Business School graduate/Wall Streeters available. That's a whole herd of willing scapegoats right there! Maybe Treasury should tap them. Employ the unemployed = job creation AND fall guys – Win-win!
My ex gave away the power lawnmower a friend gave us as a gift. She said it would be good exercise for me. My next lawnmower will be powered by an M1-A1 Abrams tank. Ditto for the snow shovel.
LOL!! You are so right.
Don't forget the Al Gore defense: "I didn't do it, and I'll never do it again."
Mr. Geithner should be happy this is not Japan, in which the phrase "I take full responsibility' generally precedes self-dissembowelment with a razor-sharp wakizashi. Great post, Jeffrey.
Same thought came through my mind. What does this poor guy (Liddy) have to lose? His $1/year job?? Did he actively seek this position? He wasn't around when things were originally agreed upon/signed by all parties, and now he's being paraded around as if he was counting the cash in a smoke-filled room with the recipients of said bonuses.
He should've ripped these pols a new one in any opening remarks, and then said, "Upon the end of this inquisition, I will no longer work for this entity", and then slam the microphone down upon his exit.
Gary, we shouldn't be advocating hari kari! Sen. Grassley almost got disemboweled by his own pitard the other day in a pique of populism against AIG execs.
The AIG bonus “outrage” is indeed a ruse to move the attention of the stupid rubes from the incompetent president to the “evil greedy wall street crooks.”
What enrages me is the absolute indifference that our affirmative action president and his braindead colleagues in congress have towards the engine of our economy: the private sector. These socialist clowns seem to not understand that it is the private sector that funds their wasteful spending in the public sector. If the private sector is squeezed there will not be tax revenue for all the leftwing bullshyt.
But this is all soon to be moot. This egregious criminal spending will create an unsustainable federal govt. Before this fleecing even began soc sec and Medicare/Medicaid were well on their way to insolvency. Now with TEN TRILLION in additional spending we will not be able to fund the outrageously bloated federal govt and the massive entitlements. A collapse is imminent; then the revolution begins. Invest in rope and lead.
I miss Tim Russert…..
I heard this the other day and it bears repeating, the Obama method of problem solving; Ready! FIRE! AIM!
These pigs remind of New York City shell game operaters, watch this, watch this, watch this; YOU LOSE AGAIN!
Nobody read the bill. The smartest people on earth are politicians, particularly Democrat politicians. If you doubt that, ask them, they'll tell you.
Do these D.C. homes equipped with scapegoats come with a liberals to feed them? Naaahhhh.
It's time for another President that DIDN'T graduate from Harvard or Yale. We need a Texas Longhorn!
=====Obama method of problem solving; Ready! FIRE! AIM!=====
The Great Satan™ problem solving plan: Rope. Tree. Politician.
Did anyone hear obama laughing like a stoned clown on 60 min? He's laughing at the plight of everyday Americans. Impeachment is too good for that socialist sack of shyt. He should get the electric chair; let that degenerate ride the lightning.
Either that or switch to only reading The Paper, and of course by that I mean the Weekly World News.
But, but, what about the flatulenceeee? We can't have all of those scapegoats farting as much as they please! Think of the childrennnn! (Channeling nutty code-pinko).
President Obama said he would take responsibility for the bonuses and well he should since he was in position to veto the law and, whether he read it or not, he chose to sign it and give his okay to the bonuses. He could be honest and say he didn't read the bill, but that would be too easy and would confirm the suspicions of most of us that these people with whom we entrust the spending our tax money and to make our laws are derelict in their duties since nothing could or should be higher on their list of priorities than to be intrinsically familiar with those bills that come before them for their votes or, in the case of the president, his signature. You darn right he's responsible and he should not be allowed to forget it.
Obama, “HEY! THE BUCK DIDN’T STOP HERE! That #$@*#%$ Bush spent it on his way out!
In fact, I'm going on the Jon Stewart show tomorrow to prove I'm still in charge.”
One of RICK's employees brings him his winnings, not one of Sam's. It's Rick's saloon, not Sam's.
Exactly. The guy is trying to do the country a favor by agreeing to be the captain of the sinking ship USS AIG. For his troubles, he gets $1 and a bunch of name-calling from the Whorehouse of Representatives.
He is a better man than I because if it were me, I would have gotten up in the middle of that hearing and told them all to "go f*#$ themselves."
And the best part is…
Those retention bonuses were paid to the AIG employees so that they would stay and clean up their mess instead of simply quitting. I wonder how many are going to stick around after the 90% tax kicks in? If they quit, yeah, we will all feel good, but then AIG is going to be stuck with a big mess and no one to clean it up. After all that has happened, you think anyone is going to be willing to take a job there?
WANTED: knowledgeable and experienced financial expert with the ability to clean up the nation's worst financial mess in decades. Work must be done quickly and with the whole world watching over your shoulder. Pay will be limited by the whims of the Federal government. No bonuses allowed.

Ohmmmmm…
Ohmmmmm…
Ohmmmmm… Bahhhmmm…
Ohmmmmm… Bahhhmmm…
Ahhhhhh……
Sorry, that's just not working for me.
I've missed all the journalists I've shot at. Must need glasses.
We can use the flatulence to heat the Congress.
So let me make sure I understand this…thanks to Sarbanes/Oxley, a CEO must eprsonally sign all of the financial documentation of his/her company to swear that they vouch for what is stated therein…but PrezBO can sign just to show that he has a pen?
You could scream into your pillow, but then you face the wrath of the Fellows for the Ethical Treatment of Linens (FETL)
Oooh, me, me, me!!!!
Oooh, me, me, me!!!! I can do it. I swear I can! Well, I have never been a "community organizer", but I organized my closets once. I can do it! Yes, I can!
It's kind of like an ice cream head rush but in a really bad way isn't it?
Think they'd notice the difference? I mean seriously, I kept waiting for Frank to start giggling and shouting out,"Hey hold my beer and watch this!" while making blue flame come off the Stimulus Bill with his zippo.
Sometimes, listening to congressmen or pundits report on what is happening in D.C. or elsewhere, when I've listened live to the same proceedings makes me question my sanity or at least if my hold on reality. I listened to about 90 minutes of the hearings then finally had to turn my XM radio off (or throw it out the window). And the only thing that has me more upset than the pompous a**es questioning, Mr. Libby is the "conservative" pundits who have been discussing it. They invariably say stupidities like, "while I hate the fact that these executives are receiving these bonuses" or "these executives should give the money back, taxing them though is unconstitutional." What all these idiots (congressional and professional) missed (or ignored) is that the executives in question EARNED this money. According to Mr. Libby's testimony, these weren't the people who developed these instruments. Which were not credit default swaps or some of the riskier products. These were the day to day staff and their supervisors who best know how to unravel the puzzle. They had been contracted to stay on-board and "wind down" some 2.5 trillion dollars of bad business. Mostly, business mortgages and other business related securities. The 165 million in retention bonuses (bad, bad name for them) is only .0155% of the 900 billion which had already been, successfully, wound down. So; not only were these "executives" being paid for services rendered, they were being kept on to complete a very arduous task. Lastly, from Mr. Libby's testimony, he sounded pretty worried that some of these folks, when asked to give some of the money back, chose to leave instead.
Puh-lease, I would be worried enough about PETA complaining about abusing the dust mites! They're getting very radical these days, you can tell by how many gave up showering to avoid killing skin mites. "Parasites have feelings too!" That also explains why they rarely complain about liberal politicians.
Indeed. But the potential applicants have finally figured out how this game is being played.
Which would explain why Geithner is so alone at Treasury right now, who in their right mind would want to work there when they know eventually their number will come up in the throwing under the bus lottery?
Sorry All…Had to share this…It made me LOL !!!!!

As the CEO of this organization, I have resigned myself to the fact that Barrack Obama is our President, and that our taxes, and government fees will increase in a BIG way. To compensate for these increases, our prices would have to increase by about 10%. Since we cannot increase our prices right now due to the dismal state of the economy, we will have to lay off six of our employees instead. This has really been bothering me, since I believe we are family here and I didn't know how to choose who would have to go So, this is what I did. I walked through our parking lot and found six Obama bumper stickers on our employees' cars and have decided these folks will be the ones to let go. I can't think of a more fair way to approach this problem. They voted for change; I gave it to them.
I will see the rest of you at the annual company picnic.
The fact that I can visualize that says so much about this Congress.
Washington DC is one sick place. These bastards right or left are all headed in the same direction, the question is how fast you drive the country off the cliff. “W, was great on foreign policy but sucked like all Washington Politicians on domestic (save, Taxes, Alito, Roberts). The cherry on his domestic cake was, “TARP!” So here we are with, “The Greatest Show on Earth, The Babbling Barry “O” and his roving Band of Nit-Wits,” leading the country backwards so fast you gotta wear a, “cup!. The blithering speed, in which these Washington creeps are spending our money is an indication of just how badly Washington-K-Street to Wall Street screwed the pooch. Be certain that these, “Feudal Lords, and their brain trust could care a twit about you or me, right or left. This is about self preservation and their political A$$. The swamp needs to be drained!
Sure, why not. That makes you better qualified than the current occupant.
LawhawkSF…Please send picture of your lawnmower with 120MM smoothbore gun, 50 cal. machine gun and count-em 2, yes 2 – 7.62mm M240 machine guns…………
Man, that will be some major weed control….:)
Every time I've "organized communities" they've thrown rocks at me, so I keep watching the TV waiting for it to start up in DC. I mean I can dream right?
I'd go with a Merkava instead, you get all that plus a 60mm mortar for plausible deniability when you take out the neighbor's garden gnomes plus a nifty compartment in the back for groceries, beer, lemonade stands, etc. and at no extra cost. It's truly a multipurpose family vehicle.
But, hey, look at the bright side: Gates is cutting the DoD budget. That should make up for all this extra domestic spending. Just think, no more wailing about how defense spending is wrecking the budget. Guess that was proved a total misconception.

Hell yeah. My kinda Boss.
Did everyone go home?
Everyone's watching 24 dude!
That would make a great t-shirt! Subversive always sells.
Bev, consider me your campaign chairman. Slogan: Anybody But Obama; Like Bev Here!
Sadly, that's about it in a nutshell.
I just looked around and it's still light here. We've got a way to go before 24 is on. Dude!
Touche"
To clarify East coast for 24.
If we ever need secret t-shirts to identify each other in public, that's what they should say: "Anybody But Obama: Like Bev Here!"
Consider it done. Calling tee printer now…
I hear you, Bev. This man is insane. If he babbles any worse, they'll need a straitjacket on him. Or on us if we have to keep listening to it. Oh, God, it's going to be a long four years.
we've got acorn, hamas, tattoo removal machines…aig is lower on my list of crooks who need to be dismantled….too bad Billy Joel went to the left..we could use a new and updated "we didnt start the fire"
I am shocked, shocked by your intemperate language. Calling members of Congress the "Whorehouse of Representatives" is outrageous and unfair. You owe the whores an apology.
After all, they're only peddling their flesh; the congressmen are peddling our future.
Not to worry, Barry, Nancy, Chris, and Barney are there to make sure things run well? Don’t worry about contract law, remember, The Constitution is a living document.
