There’s a big difference between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton on the one hand and Caroline Kennedy on the other: Obama and Clinton were both elected. You may not like it, I don’t like it, but they did convince a majority of the voters that the good things about them outweighed the bad.

Caroline Kennedy, on the other hand, has never been elected to anything, not even mayor of a small town in Alaska. It’s always a little awkward when an elected office has to be filled by appointment, but it’s doubly bad when the person appointed has never won an election of any sort. If Princess Caroline believes that editing a poetry anthology and hosting a few fundraisers qualifies her to be in the senate, she’s welcome to make that argument to the voters, but she would have been a poor choice as an appointment.
