Hollywood: Whose Side Are You On?
by James HudnallOnce upon a time Hollywood movies were often about American heroes vanquishing our enemies. Now they make movies attacking Americans while ignoring the real people who attack America.
Once upon a time Hollywood had no problem distinguishing our enemies from our allies. Now our allies are often shown to be feckless and evil while our enemies are either ignored or made out to be mere puppets of our evil leaders.
For example, last season of “24″ had an African dictator’s troops invading the country and trying to unleash a deadly virus, but of course, they were working for an evil Blackwater type military contractor run by a right-wing “patriot.” Patriot is Hollywoodese for crazy nut job. The same kind of villains were used in this year’s “State of Play” which had evil government contractors murdering people to cover up their evil conspiracy. Or last year’s “Body of Lies,” also starring Russell Crowe, which showed the CIA as a bunch of lying killers who have Arabs picked off with abandon for the aims of US policy. And let’s not forget 2007’s “Valley of Elah” in which American soldiers are portrayed as soulless killers made that way because they were exposed to combat. Or how about “Syriana”, in which a fat George Clooney wanders around the Arabian desert learning how evil the US is while boring the audience with an obscure plot.
And now we have the upcoming “Green Zone” with Maaaatt Daaaamonnnn. The villains appear to be evil American contractors again. Sheesh, are they done with Nazis now as the cliched Hollywood villain? Oh, I forgot, they’re busy making Nazis more sympathetic now.
Hollywood seems to have it in their head that Americans are the bad guys.
Meanwhile, Muslim fanatics of the Al Qaeda variety don’t exist in Hollywood movies anymore. You have to go back to 1994’s “True Lies.” Yet James Cameron’s movie didn’t exactly take the threat of Muslim terrorists seriously. It treated them more like typical goofy movie villains for the hero to punch out. And now, when Islamo-fascists are referenced at all, they are usually shown to be tools of evil Americans (with the exception of a handful of art films, mostly foreign, like 2007’s the “Kite Runner” in which the Taliban were shown to be the murderous thugs they are.)
Hollywood once had no trouble showing us the villains of the world. The Nazis were an easy target. After all, they were vanquished. Yet they took on the Soviets on occasion. They also had no problem coming up with all kinds of diverse antagonists of every nationality. Not anymore. Now they can’t even deal with the most clear cut bad guys around, the Islamo-Fascists.
Not Muslims, Islamo-Fascists. There’s a difference.
The fact is, terrorist groups like Al Qaeda are not loved in the Muslim world despite what some would tell you. They’ve killed more innocent Muslims than any combatants in recent wars. The Taliban are oppressors in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The US, on the other hand, has done a lot to build schools, hospitals and infrastructure both in Afghanistan and Iraq. But Hollywood makes our contractors as sinister villains. Both TV and film are knocking out one hack script after another. And our troops are often shown badly as well, despite the fact that we have the most disciplined armed forces in the world.
Once upon a time Hollywood used to make films for the war effort showing the free people of the world what we’re fighting for and why. Now they make movies that do the opposite. They question our motives and make us out to be the villains.
So whose side are you on, Hollywood? If your goal is to make money, you keep failing. The movies I listed above, that made us the villains, were all failures. Movies that make us heroes tend to be successful. Are you using Obama math now?
To paraphrase your favorite president, George W. Bush, either you’re with us or you’re against us. We’re not feeling the love right now.
In case you don’t get it, Islamo-fascists shut down all media when they get into power. They kill gays, lefties, intellectuals first. Are you telling us you approve? Because there’s no point in attacking your own side otherwise. Not unless you want us to lose.
Oh, I know, you don’t think these terrorists are any real threat. That’s why all those lefty “comedians” aren’t afraid to mock Islam and terrorists, right? Oh, yeah… they don’t do that. They mock Christians instead. Because they know Christians won’t kill them.
If you’re afraid of fatwas, Salman Rushdie is still picking up hot women and hanging around parties. All those Danish cartoonists threatened with death are still around years later.
So in other words, are you a bunch of spineless cowards? A pack of gutless, cringing eunuchs? Are you are letting the world know this by attacking your own side, hoping the bad guys will treat you better if they win? Like those Jews who worked for the Nazis in Poland as ghetto cops, thinking they would be spared the cattle car treatment?
I think you better get your priorities straight. Pronto.

This piece is on the money. Hollywood, unlike most every other business in America at the moment, chooses to insult the purchasers of its goods and services.
If, in my business, I allowed my political leanings to dictate my business processes, I would be broke in a month. Business is ALWAYS there to serve others: That is why Rule #1, "the customer is always right" is always right.

There are so many great movies Hollywood could make ….. I would love to see movies about American history, and biblical stories.

Art reflects life, which is shown by Navy Seals on trial for how rough they were with a murdering piece of pig feces, and even some senators upset that killing an enemy is wrong when done with a superior force, or that shooting soldiers in the back while pretending to be an ally is fair play and should not be retaliated, or hideing in a mosque as if a free base in a game. Cultural diversity does not mean letting a minority have dominant exposure for their ways, but lets get ready for that prisinor's creation made up and to be on par with Christmas (sorry, Sparkle Season).

Hollywood, like a microcosm of the federal government, plays with other peoples money and hence no accountability for the failure of the anti-American films it produces. To go back to the halcyon days when actors being interveiwd would complain that "this town only understands dollars and cents."

Sorry but this is just plain wrong. You shouldn't be so quick to label films you clearly haven't seen, because SPOILER ALERT in State of Play, it turns out that the government contractors weren't so bad after all, and the liberal politician who wanted them all punished was actually the one having people murdered, to cover up his affair. This is clearly a clever twist on the way these stories usually go, and ultimately quite conservative.
It's this kind of conclusion-jumping that shows how desperate people like you are to fit all films into anti-American narrative.

Like oz said. The film had a major twist at the end. Perhaps its storytelling was too slow, and critics with an agenda raced off before the end to write their reviews.

It's too bad that Trey and Matt don't run a studio. They're fearless, have a sense of fair humor, aren't afraid to skewer both sides of the spectrum, and tackle sacred cows. You don't see them stepping in liberalism, like their contemporaries. Someone should buy MGM and let them fly – IMO, they could be wildly successful as content matters not idealogical PC crapola. Well I never watched 24, but Team America was a good movie. Then again the South Park guys have been known for taking shots even cheap ones. Look all you have to do is look at Hollywood's balance sheet. These guys are not box office anymore, if they ever was really. MGM is up for sale, they have not done well at the box office and the company tanked. Still good movies are being made, Clint Eastwood comes to mind, but at 80+ he is very old school and his films show this. What happening is that at some point there will be a shift. People who put up the money to make movies would like to get their money back and God forbid even make a profit. Hollywood has some huge problems, the actors are just the face of it, Mel Gibson could not get distribution for a film version of "The Passion Play" from the usual sources for such things. Nor could he get it financed either, so he commited the greats of all sins, he pretty much put up his own money or just about all of his own money and well we all know what the return on it was. Never mind DVD sales. He has been pretty much blacked balled ever since. So here is Mel who was able to return 20 dollars in profit for every dollar invested, Can't get another movie, James Camron just made a 500 million dollar thing that they know is going to loose money. Americans like certian things in there movies, Good vs Evil, Evil looses. Why to suppose John Wayne who has been gone for 30 years is currently number 3 on the top 10 actors list? Or better yet why a 1939's Wizard of OZ was a sell out at all the Movie houses where it was shown back in August? A 70 year old movie restored and in HD Did way better that the current crowd of what we are suppose to see at the movies. There is a huge pile of money to be made, all somebody has to do is just go and do. MGM after the Passion should have hired Mel to run the place. Instead its going to be a fire side sale.

Executive Decision with Kurt Russell. Not only is that movie, in my opinion one of the best action movies of all time but it show a true portrayal of an Islamic terrorist. You won't see movies like that anymore. I read that Russell leans Republican.

Here's a simple reason why Hollywood does not make more movies involving Muuuuuuuuuslim terrorists: because the enemy, despite its swagger, is really, really weak.
Simply put,. American Might vs Guys in Caves ain't going to make for a sexy movie.
So why not make the villains Muslims in the west who go terrorist?
For the simple reason that movie audiences are stupid and that would result in actual harm to Muslims in the west and other dark skinned groups who could be mistaken for them.
But since conservatives lack compasion for those different from them it's no surprise that they're eager to stigmatize innocent Muslims all the more.
I call it a win for the SEALs if he came back with his extremities intact. They should be getting a freaking medal for their restraint. Let us not forget the Blackwater boys are mainly military boys who went private contractor. They wanted a pay increase after the meager wage they got in the military. You can't bl;ame them for that. It is the only line of work a combat veteran can really get into. I know a Marine who has it pretty rough adjusting to life outside of a combat zone.

I agree ed357. I don't watch TV anymore and rarely go to movies. I won't watch ANYTHING made by or starring Roman Polanski apologists (Harrison Ford, for example, who was one of my favorite actors) or America-haters. At the end of the day, these morons are capitalists–they love their lifestyle which is fueled by tons of money. As soon as the American public regains their principles and stops supporting their politics by closing their wallets, they'll stop making anti-American, pro-rapist propaganda.

Despite my other issues with "United 93"–the infernal shakey-cam being my main problem with it–at least its makers didn't change the terrorists into white supremacists or neo-nazis. The "Sum of All Fears" adaptation is still the nadir of that particular aspect of what you're talking about in this post, Mr. Hudnall.
But you're right: if "The Sum of All Fears" were to be adapted today, would the filmmakers change the terrorists into American employees of Blackwater… or perhaps disgruntled American officers trying to wag the dog to get the country to properly invest in our wars…? It's hard to say. But we can probably all agree that they wouldn't use the villains from Clancy's book.
I wonder if Hollywood's issues with patriotic Americans has to do with their own self esteem.
Men and women in the service who've gone through the rigors of training, deployment, and battle. They tend not to care a hole lot about what a bunch of snooty, over paid, under educated, wanna be's think about them.
In other words they are less likely to swoon in awe of a world class artists. Since they won't grovel, Hollywood considers them the enemy.
But a more likely answer is Hollywood jumped on the anti-Vietnam band wagon back in the 60's and the majority aren't bright enough to realize the 60's was a long time ago.
The problem is the limosine liberals, those that have inherited their money or "earned" it in show business, have so much money that a big movie bomb, a 50% tax rate, etc., is nothing to them and their fractured consciences. It is those of us in the middle/upper middle that work for a living and create jobs that have to satisfy the customer.
When you have little talent and $100mm to show for that talent, customer satisfaction is the last thing on your mind.

I think "The Siege" was a was a fairly good representation of terrorism and terrorist's true motives. In fact, the best scene is where Annette Bening's character is imploring her lover, a Muslim terrorist that she's been spying on, not to go through with a bombing. On TV they are showing anti-war protesters at the site he is about to blow up. She says something to the effect that they are on his side…which he admits that they are not….that is the TRUTH, we are all infidel's to the extremists. They want to wipe us ALL out…including the sympathizers and the pacifists.
I not only saw the movie they WERE one of the bad guys, but I did not want to spoil the twist at the end.

You should go and get the works of John Ford, Henry Hathaway, most are on DVD, Start with She wore a Yellow Ribbon, then go to John Fords Master Piece "The Searchers". Das Boot is another great move. I saw The Hurt Locker last summer and I liked it. There are good movies around, sadly you will have to go looking back 40 or so years with some exceptions. Oh "The outlaw Josy Wales" 1976 is considered a Master Piece today and it didn't make much of a splash when it was on the Big Screen. A lot of Eastwood's work is first rate, both as an actor and director. Besides, movie night at home with family would make it all worth while.

After the Pearl Harbor attack, Japanese Americans were sent to camps. So, Muslims being sent to similar camps in "The Siege" made sense given American history.
The fact that life didn't reflect art post-9/11 indicates that Americans are VERY tolerant of religious minorities compared to the rest of the world.
It's about time somebody said it. Theres the main reason I ignore the movie theaters and go for the classics on Blu-Ray. They could have kept accepting my money for their product but they pissed me off with the overt "We hate America and you should too" bit so I went ahead and spent 15K on my own private THX certified media room. Too bad. . . that money could have been all theirs . . . and I'm not the only one. Most of my friends are doing it too, why leave he house anymore for a movie? The Hollywood that Hates America and Americans must hate our money too, right?
Call me cynical, but there are times when I suspect that the only reason that Hollywood appeared to be on our side during WWII was because we were on the same side as the Soviets. They were free to support us because by doing so they would be working in support of their ideological masters. Once the WWII was over and the cold war started in earnest, things changed.

Even if this "twist" were to explain away the paranoia some of us conservatives have… and even if this "twist" proves that James H jumped the gun in his analysis (and I'm not conceding that it does)… I am getting sick of this sort of "twist" being worked into movies in the first place.
So, the viewer gets 119 minutes of "contractors are evil". Then, at the very end of the movie, the viewer gets one minute of "naw, we were just kidding; contractors are okay"…
Sorry… any propagandist realizes that a 119:1 ratio isn't even close to a fair-and-balanced narrative.
I stopped half-way through the movie "Little Miss Sunshine". Sure, as all my friends pointed out, it's gets better at the end. But, I had to sit through 70 full minutes of putrescence… 70 minutes of bilge-water… 70 minutes of vomitous human depravity.

Important point: the biggest issue of the movie 2012 is not the absence of the destruction of mosques, but, rather, the fact that the movie itself actually exists.

If Hollywood wants a true villain it's obviously the Marxist left – the arrogant overeducated undersmart sons and daughters of the idle rich who enslave the minorities through handouts rather than elevating them through education and employment. The contractor are never shown to be OK, just not the "real killer". But they do go around killing people in the movie as a red herring.

Thanks for replying James. As far as I remember, the person who does the killing is a very damaged ex-soldier who is being manipulated by the liberal politician. No, the film never reveals that the contractors are actually good guys while on the battlefield, but the suggestion that they are killing innocent Americans as a cover-up turns out to be false.
It's a good thing that you didn't want to ruin the ending, but your description suggests that the film deserves criticism for something that it's twist reveals to be untrue.

I saw it a few months ago and don't remember that,. I remember that the soldier was damaged, not that contractors were given a pass. You may be right, but I'm not interested in renting it again to check.
The left has much in common with radical Moslems and therefore won't criticize them: they both hate western civilization. The left tolerates radical Islam because they see it as a tool to help tear down the system that they despise even though it has made them enormously rich and influential. They still hate it because they hate themselves. They can trash Christians because they are easy and won't defend themselves or threaten to cut off their heads like some Moslems will. Christians are easy to not tolerate; Moslems they are afraid of. They would rather cower inside their homes like the French as Moslems burn and loot in their streets than make a movie about them.
