HBO Obama Doc: The Bland Leading the Blind
by James HudnallLast night HBO debuted the documentary “By the People: The Election of Barack Obama,” which chronicles the historic election of our 44th president. The film was shot by Alicia Sams and Amy Rice with a key assist from actor Edward Norton. The directors wanted to follow Obama around on his campaign after seeing his speech in the 2004 Democrat Convention. They couldn’t get any calls back until Ed Norton stepped in to help. Norton doesn’t appear in the film. But there are plenty of other starry-eyed voters lined up to praise “the one.”

The film’s first 45 minutes deals with the Iowa Caucus where Obama’s campaign begins. He spends eight months meeting people and working his bland charm, trying to convince everyone he’s just like them. An agreeable, prosaic kind of guy who looks good in a suit and grins a lot. There is no indication of his politics or past associations being radical. He seems a moderate. There are a few people interviewed who question his past, but it’s given little attention.
Obama coasts through his campaign like some kind of prom king who’s used to people throwing rose petals at his feet. Michelle is shown as being the supportive wife and the kids are along for the ride. It’s an image of the family that goes along with the narrative they created for themselves. The film makers said in interviews that they were impressed by how zen-like the Obama team seemed to be. My impression was they never seemed that emotionally engaged. Obama often smiled, but he was generally very detached, almost like he was coasting to victory on a wave of hubris. Robert Gibbs and David Axelrod were shown as two tired-looking, almost bored middle aged guys wrangling Obama’s scruffy young ideologues as they tried to get more voters on their side.
Obama’s “genius” as a politician is to be a blank slate for people who didn’t know him. They projected their own aspirations and expectations on his candidacy. He appeared at a time when people were afraid the economy was tanking and they didn’t see answers in the usual faces running for president. They were able to see Obama as someone calm and in control. An image he was able to maintain throughout the race.
Isn’t it funny how looks are often deceiving?
The film’s villain wasn’t so much John McCain but Hillary Clinton, who gave Obama his biggest fight. Yes, the revealing thing about this doc was how Obama seemed to be largely unaffected by the ups and downs of the race. Part of that comes from the fact that Obama was “selected and not elected.” He won caucuses, Hillary won elections. Obama was able to get enough delegates by caucuses to appear the leader in the race. Then momentum carried him home.
Obama’s career has been full of opportunities and awards handed to him on a platter. And when that doesn’t work, he uses underhanded tricks.
The film is a lot like Obama himself: bland, humorless and full of meaningless platitudes. But it looks nice.
And that’s the problem with ObamaMania. The Dems threw Hillary Clinton under the bus because many of them didn’t like her baggage, yet these same people, who screamed bloody murder about President Bush’s missing National Guard records, didn’t even blink at the fact that Obama has locked away so many things in his past and denied his associations with America-hating radicals. Yet his cabinet is full of those very same kind of people. Which brings us to the two most hilarious statements Obama made in the campaign, which were repeated in the film:
“People are tired of fear, distractions and diversions.” and “They (the people) don’t deserve four more years of failed economic policies.”
No wonder his poll numbers are dropping. He’s right!
The irony of this show was that it debuted on the night Obama was given a glimpse of his political future. Major losses were handed to the Dems. And over on ABC, a remake of the ’80s sci fi show “V” was aired, only this time it was a comment on ObamaMania. Attractive aliens come to earth and promise “universal health care” and hope and change in return for our trust and devotion. Little do the foolish earth people know, the aliens are here to destroy us.
Don’t you hate it when that happens?

Yet another foolish waste of time by the Obamaniacs.
Haven't the Hollyweird numb-sculls heard yet? Obama is sooo 2008.
Should have changed the tv show name from "V" to "O"
Norton's looking more and more like a local scrapple eater.
I'm glad I don't pay for HBO or Showtime (liberal propaganda networks). Ed Norton is fast becoming as ridiculous as Will Ferrell. He had a hard one for Al Gore, John Kerry and now Barack. So what's new? Hollywood is fast becoming the propaganda wing of the liberal establishment. Funny how they always thought of themselves as being anti-establishment. Now they R it!
Another reason I never liked Edward Norton.
With the Republican/Conservative victories in Virgina&New Jersey. I think I'll start investing in diaper stocks. I have a strong hunch the politicos in both parties are going to be going through a lot of them.
I watched "V" last night. I was shocked, I figured it was going to be more subtle, in fact maybe we were reading too much into a few lines that could be construed into little jabs. Nope, it was pretty clear repudiation of hopey-changey, news media fawning, and even specifically universal health care.
I thought it was going to be just too exhausting for me to look for the hollywood d-bags who can't stop humping BO's leg. Thankfully, I don't have to exhaust myself in the slightest because these idiots cannot present themselves fast enough. They have saved me and many others from spending our hard earned dollars and free time on their stupid movies, TV shows and music. I also stopped buying magazines, newspapers and products endorsed by these losers. Thanks hollywood for helping me keep my money in my pocket.
Narcissist in Chief. He is a lizard. Make a small cut behind his ear and you will see he is a reptillian.
Yawn….
Oh, are we awake? Ahem… so Hollywood synchophant Edward Norton fawns over The One. Two questions come to mind: Will anyone watch it? and of course, Who cares?
The desire of this lot to manage messages and manufacture news is an abject failure. And a lot of the credit goes to-
Big Hollywood!
For their efforts, and the ubiquitous 24/7 news cycle, this bunch simply has become The Gang Who Couldn't Shoot Straight. Every attempt at craeting propaganda has backfired, and badly.
As will this…
Should read "By the Thugs".
As we can see in Virginia and New Jersey, the people are awake, pissed off and finally ready to embrace Hope and Change.
Edward Norton???
You're so cute when you're angry. LOL
I just want to thank James for doing the work and watching it. I certainly didn't want to.
Why am I not surprised that President Narcissism watched this and not the election results.
as are you, we suspect. But angry? well, we won'r say never. But it is rare…
Obama’s career has been full of opportunities and awards handed to him on a platter. And when that doesn’t work, he uses underhanded tricks.
Seriously? Did you ever write the same thing about GW? If you didn't then you are a good 'ol hypocrite at best and a bad journalist at worst. Go back and stick your head in the sand.
Why would anybody need to watch an HBO "documentary" (laugh, HBO and documentary, snicker, snicker) about Obama's campaign, when someone could just watch MSNBC?
Death to Smoochy!
Yes, James, thanks for doing the thinking for Warren1128. God forbid he ever comes to his own conclusions. Talk about the blind leading the blind.
I can see Obama now gazing admiringly into a mirror saying "mirror, mirror on the the wall who's the fairest of them all!" That's just great! We have a narcissistic Nero as commander in chief! God help us!
You know, it would have been smarter if they'd released this BEFORE Obama turned into a total failure and lost all of his support. LOL!
Ooh, Bush bashing in 2009. How retro!
Oh, all that failure stuff is just a Jedi Mind Trick. He will show us his bold moves any day now. As soon as he finishes a few more rounds of golf.

James, LOL! There may be a lot of carbon scoring on my droids, but I'm not falling for any Jedi Mind Tricks from Darth Barack.
There wasn't too much thinking in the doc. It was the typical revival tent show, with a preacher who can't dance or lead.
Wow, more and continuing reasons NOT to subscribe to HBO. I won't have to stumble across this hagiography by accident.
Its sad, after reading all these comments, no wonder America sucks. Look in the mirror people. If I didnt know any better, I would assume each comment wwas from an 8 yr old from the deep south. Both parties are to blame. Bush and Clinton and Obama and Reagan are to blame. Its almost like having 2 terrorist organizations trying to say they are better than the other. Join me people, for as long as you blame the other side, you are the one to blame.
No more HBO for me, "click" cancelled.
How can you blame the President who got the most votes in history? Did anyone here follow the the election? The other side had Sarah Palin for christ sake. Im sorry, but when the choice id between a brilliant, yet inexperienced and naive politician, and the other is Arguably the dumbest woman on earth and a man who doesnt know what email is, considering it was all the right-wing policies that got the country into the mess its in to begin with, the choice was easy. Which was also proven on election night. Make no mistake, Obama is going slow and isnt perfect, but anyone who pretends its not the republicas that got us into the mess is just hard to take seriously. You simply cant have a debate with people that dont get it.
Republicans are classic. Most of them are so dumb and ignorant that all you can do is laugh at them. They support illegal wars against countries that did nothing to us. They accept being lied to about reasons why we invaded an innocent country. They support letting terrorists go free, ruining the economy, and letting the richest of the rich get a fraction richer while the other 95% of the country and small businesses suffer. Its just hysterical. Lets play a game: Compare Clinton's 8 yrs with Bush's 8 yrs. If you arent laughing already at how bad Bush was, then you are part of the problem.
James, bro! That's my title, man!

Gee, now I know how Ray Bradbury feels.
I will have to watch it!
Seriously pissed off! And we are not going away contrary to all hope from career politicians of both parties. We are coming after ALL of them.
I don't for a moment believe that Obama didn't watch the results. Just another lie from the White House. They come daily.
[...] nation. It was called "V" and aired on ABC to mostly rave reviews and tremendous ratings. There was another documentary about the Obama campaign on HBO, but that left out [...]
I agree with you. "You simply cant have a debate with people that dont get it. " Right back atcha (pun intended) buddy. By the way, try for a little proper punctuation next time around. You may sound a little more intelligent. Well, perhaps not.

Hey, AP! *waves*
No worries, you have to have a brilliant mind to pull the Jedi Mind Tricks, so obviously those wont be occurring.
I am canceling HBO today. If I wanted to watch sycophantic media for Obama, I would watch ABC, NBC, CBS, or PBS for free. I would certainly not pay $15.95 a month for it as I do for HBO.
TERM LIMITS FOR ALL ELECTED OFFICIALS!
And, yes, I am shouting.
Howdy butler!
You're right of course. We have little to fear from mind tricks. . . just stupid pet tricks!
Profound!
Yes, he is the most BRILLIANT president evah!
President Obama is the greatest President of the 57th State ever had as President!
You know Teddy, the 57th State which upholds Harvard Constitution and where lives the NY Times/WAPO unnamed sources.
And don't forget the BRILLIANT Chuck
He too lives in the great President Obama's 57th State!
Ed Norton should wear the Ted Danson 'smart glasses' look to really bring out the appearance of having intelligence.
Wardrobe!
"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt."
Abraham Lincoln.
These are words you should heed CHuck.
That is a great line! I can see that going viral.
Just like Elle Woods' wears when she starts going to Harvard Law.
Pres. Obama and team has apparently already saved the US from Another Republican Depression!
I'd say that only a few months ago most of the US feared we'd be at 20% unemployment soon. To spend for construction [instead of GOP destruction], to fix so many GOP Mess's, is unfortunate but necessary!
Apparently so many that read this site are right wing Fox robots. Yet they claim to be 'independent thinkers, rugged hard working people.' So many of the same live off of the government, and in effect are "socialists!" They get money for being in government [like nasty Cong. Boehner], or teachers, police, firemen, retired on SS, or in military. I don't mind that, but quite being against government when so many of you benefit from it !
The right wing pushed for the unnecessary Iraq War, which has become the biggest blunder in US history! It will cost, after decades of borrowed money [and remember, Cheney said " debt does not matter !!!"], $ 40,000 for EACH US FAMILY !!
We can " thank " the right wing for that, for those higher taxes !!$$$$$$$
but if you make that cut, wont all the air leak out?
not me, I'm ugly 24/7… and dam proud of it!
I'm a conservatarian… Dem mind tricks don't work on me.. only facts.
