Bill Maher: Crazy or Stupid?
by James HudnallIn an effort to continue to broadcast his lack of relevance, Bill Maher doubled down on his hubris-queen act by challenging President Obama to “stand up for the 70 percent of Americans who aren’t crazy.”
Yes, apparently, Maher thinks 70 percent of Americans actually agree with him. And if you don’t, you must be crazy. Otherwise, he and his pals would be crazy. And that can’t be true, could it…? *wink*
The self-professed bong lover has truly become a poster child for left coast delusion syndrome. Or maybe I should say Beck Derangement Syndrome since this is all about Glenn Beck.
The tag team of Glenn Beck and Andrew Breitbart have been doing some major damage to the credibility of the Obama Administration, while the zombie media slept. Van Jones was exposed as a racist-communist-truther and had to resign. Maher said it was because he was caught comparing Republicans to a piece of anatomy usually compared to opinions.
Then NEA Communications director Yosi Sergant was reassigned after Beck exposed Obama’s attempt to get the art community to churn out propaganda for him, with the vague promise of grants to come later.
And then Beck and Breitbart struck again with the exposure of ACORN willing to help set up an under aged brothel for a team of undercover journalists posing as pimp and prostitute.
Naturally, Maher doesn’t see what all this means. He rushed to attack Obama for not defending the racist truther Jones instead of questioning why the administration would hire someone so unqualified and irrational. Moreover, since many of Obama’s czars are extreme radicals not that different from Van Jones, one would naturally conclude maybe that’s what the White House also believes. After all, you don’t hire people to represent your agenda who are that different from you politically. Not unless you are a fool or incompetent. And Obama can’t be one of those, could he…?
But Maher doesn’t seem to care about that. Like a lot of lefties he’s outraged that black nationalist Van Jones who claimed “white people are poisoning minorities,” was forced to resign over a holiday weekend.
Maher and company don’t like what Beck has wrought. In a week’s time, he’s landed some serious body blows on the administration. And his 9/12 movement helped to organize one of the largest marches on Washington in American history.
That’s got to have a lot of lefties like Maher all “wee wee’d” up, to paraphrase the Prez. In fact, they’re probably shopping for Depends right about now.
What Maher and others of his ilk are doing is missing the point. If it’s that easy to make Obama look damaged so early in his administration, with only a few people trying (because the zombie media sure isn’t), just imagine what will happen when everyone starts to pile on. And they will.
Obama’s poll numbers are dropping fast. He’s in the 40s and heading south. When, not if, his poll numbers get to the 30s he’ll be in open season territory. The press will stop carrying his water and start looking at him as a lost cause and an embarrassment.
And you know what they like to do with people they put on a pedestal, after they tire of them.
Which brings us back to Maher. He’s an alleged comedian. Yet Obama is comedy gold. If ever there was a pretentious fraud waiting for a “Kick Me” sign on his back, it’s our death panel denying prez. Instead of finding jokes in all this material, Maher turns to anger and starts lashing out like a bad Tony Clifton imitator.
And here I thought he was supposed to be funny.
Looks like the joke is on him.

Great piece. Maher is an idiot, like most of liberal Hollywood. My problem is not that they have opinions, or even that they express them, (they have the same 1st amendment rights I do), my problem is that they seem to think that because they're famous, that makes them smarter than the rest of us and makes their opinions somehow imbued with more strength and importance than anyone else. Maher, Clooney, Moore, Sarandon, yada yada yada.. should just STFU!!!

Read yesterday's WSJ editorial page, right side, bottom of the fold. There's an excellent article on "terminal sedation" that is going on in Britain. This is a budding scandal. Think about it: What happens when an old codger kicks the bucket?
1) S/he no longer collects Social Security, thus saving social security what money would have been paid out.
2) S/he is no longer a burden to Medicare and won't be requiring "expensive" medical care at his/her "end of life".
3) If s/he has an estate, the government gets a large chunk of it within nine months of his/her death.
Killing three birds with one stone might be a little dark, but it certainly fits.

Maher is a libertarian in the same sense Noam Chomsky is a libertarian.
On top of Maher's (and Chomsky's) other lies, this one really irritates me. The left in this country long ago stole the term "liberal" so thoroughly that no one even remembers its older meaning.
Now Maher and Chomsky are leading the charge to steal the term "libertarian" from the right. Chomsky is at least honest enough to describe himself as a "libertarian socialist" (a contradiction in terms if I ever heard one), but not Maher.
The attempted theft of the "libertarian" label is one facet of the Orwellian war of words by the left. Replacing the terms "socialist", "Marxist", and "radical" with "progressive", "hope", and "change" is another effort to re-define the language in the left's favor.

However, loathe as we are to fight crazy with crazy, just remember that over the last couple of decades we have seen that the Left finds no allegation too outrageous, no rumor too distasteful, no lack of evidence any indicator of innocence. They have no trouble painting with a broad bush dipped in facile fraud and disingenuous concern. You gonna fight that kind of crazy with a Tea Party and an appeal to standards or consistency?

It's not just Maher. Mainstream reporters are doing it, too. When they finally bothered to cover the Van Jones thing, after his midnight resignation, the story was at least half about Beck. The other half was about Jones, when obviously it should have been about Obama, since Jones himself was never important outside the power Obama gave him.

Never mind, back to the point. I saw an interview on one network or another (a "respectable" one, i.e. non-cable). I think it was with Robin Roberts on ABC. She brought up Van Jones, but didn't ask him why he hired him, or whether he has anything in common with Jones' radicalism. No, she asks him how difficult it is to "stay on message" when talk-radio haters like Beck harsh his mellow. I understand fawning, but that is gross. Either don't ask him about Jones or let him spout a talking point about how the Jones he hired wasn't the Jones you saw on the tapes, or whatever. But don't ask him about how hard it is to put up with conservative gnats buzzing outside his rollicking train of media dominance. It makes you look like a toady.

What I love about this site is that you don't even care if the things you say are untrue, and you don't mind contradicting yourself for the sake of a miserable attempt at sarcasm (read that van jones paragraph again … slowly). There's a reason all the big comedians are liberal, and if you think it's because there's some sort of leftist conspiracy in the media, you should reconsider your argument about how the left is too incompetent to successfully organize against the "will of the people." Keep at it, fellas. Sure, Democrats are ineffectual morons, but Conservatives continue to be the greatest driving force for liberalism in the nation. Yeah, I picked up on it years ago on his ABC show when he would complain about things like how the U.S. doesn't have the highest ratio of foreign aid to GDP. This was a problem, even though we spent the most in absolute numbers. Nevermind that a real libertarian doesn't care about international welfare anymore than he does the domestic variety. I'm offended by the idea that charity doesn't count if it doesn't the giver hurt. I'd take million dollars from a billionaire before two bits from a hobo.
Bill Maher is the poster boy for the Boomer elites. All their conceits, surliness, contradictions, mean-spiritedness and narcissism. Actually, Midnite Rambler, libertarian socialism (or "voluntary socialistm") has a long and (to the extent that it was non-coercive) honorable history. If you read some of the writings of such libertarian socialists as Proudhon, except for the economics they often sound like they could be writing for REASON. However, to be a true libertarian socialist, you actually have to be a libertarian. That is, you have to be non-coercive about your socialism. Obviously an Obama supporter like Maher (the satirist as Court Jester–an old and sad story) may be a socialist, but he certainly isn't a libertarian.
I actually would like to see a revival of libertarian socialism. You want socialism? Fine. Pool your resourceswith other-like minded folk, share and share alike–and KEEP YOUR @#$%ING HANDS OUT OF MY POCKET! "Libertarian socialism" as defined by Chomsky is a society with no central authority, where communities pool resources and make decisions at the local level. It differs from anarcho-socialism in that libertarian socialists would not arrange their local communities along along trade-union lines.
The problem is that to get to Chomsky and Howard Zinn's anti-authoritarian socialist paradise, one must first smash the state, and anyone who does not want to share with those in his community who do not contribute their fair share in goods and services. In other words, libertarian socialism as a societal model will require the same amount of bloodshed and coercion to acheive and maintain as all other forms of socialism. As soon as someone in Chomsky's village-state wishes to keep the products of their labor for themself, one part of the "libertarian socialist" equation must go out the window.
Don't forget: this so-called comedian's best film was "Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death", and he played an clumsy idiot.

Your definition of "libertarian socialism" has more in common with the vision of the Shakers, Amana Colonies, and Owenites than with that of Chomsky, Zinn, et al. The Shakers and Owenites did just as you say, and made their form of socialism voluntary. Chomsky and Maher want to impose their version of "libertarian socialism" on all of us, and their is nothing libertarian about that.

Exactly the point I have been trying to make for a while; language has power and they who control the language control the argument. It is not just that they have completely redefined the term liberal, the greater problem is most Americans do remember that ideas such as free speech, religious freedom, the free market and constitutional government were considered liberal ideas when this countrry was founded. Thus by association the Dems are viewed by too many uninformed people to still represent basic American values when in reality they abandoned those years ago. It is fine if people want to call themselves conservative but we need to start pointing out over and over again what classical liberalism was and how the Dems no longer represent those values but instead represent a form of state socialism.

They call it "voluntary," but I have my doubts. Mostly because they're incredibly vague as to how the system would work in reality. What I do know is that whenever the Bakunin/Kropotkin came into being in some historical form (or at least when people who claimed to be inspired by it came into power) it was brutal. See Spain during the Civil War.
My big problem with this form of socialism is that it is a fraud, first, and steals the spotlight from libertarian anarchism, second (anarchism in any form is silly, but at least the libertarian variety is consistent). It is a fraud because they want it both ways: the abolition of private property and universal brotherhood of love and peace without force. It is also a fraud because you better believe they'd impose rules upon the members who at one point voluntarily joined their communes, if not the rest of society. If they didn't, the commune would collapse. Or it would wither away and die, as people opted to join commercial society.

At best, it would resemble the hippy communes, that is completely inconsequential little subcultures. Doesn't exactly seem to rise to the level of political philosophy to me. Maybe a sociological curiosity, like other subcultures (see: biker gangs, etc.).
As for Proudhon, I have some respect for him. People I admire, like Herbert Spencer and Albert J. Nock borrow from him, or are at least of the same type (in a reserved fashion). His problem was that he attacked private property as such, whereas he should have stuck to condemning the State. Surely, the State creates property sometimes, though not by "stealing" so much as by subjugating people to work it for them. All we have to do is get rid of the wealth the State allows some people to steal from others, and leave what people create for themselves alone. The State also defends property, and should, in my opinion. Private property is the basis for civilization, and in most cases human happiness. Not all of human happiness, but a good chunk of it.

That's what he said, but the obvious implication is that Bill Maher isn't crazy either, and that he agrees with Obama, and that Obama isn't crazy, and that Obama and Maher are part of some 70% of the population who, if not are inherent Obama supporters, are open to being persuaded. Everyone thinks they're part of the majority (at least in some respect, if not altogether).

It's hard to think of a more repulsive liberal cretin than Maher. I suppose that's not entirely true because I did immediately think of Olbermann, Gerafalo, Van Jones, Joy Behar, Obama, pelosi, reid, Murtha, Gore, Clinton, Kerry, Durbin, etc, but Maher is at the top of this dung heap.

I guess, like the definition of "liberalism," the defintion of "libertarian socialism" has been bastardized over the years. When I was in college, writing my paper on the anti-statist socialists and also hanging around the Laissez-Faire Booksore (of blessed memory!) in Greenwich Village, if you looked at the section of the bookstore devoted to libertarian socialism, it was all Proudhon, Bakunin, etc. I'm now sounding like a typical old codger, but nevertheless: "In my day, you had to be a libertarian to be a libertarian socialist! You kids, with your crazy music and your reeefers . . . "

As for Palin and Beck, I can see why a lot of people think they're nuts. A lot of their points are either misquoted, or repeated without context. When you listen to the entire statement, as Palin or Beck said it, most open-minded people will find that it makes perfect sense, regardless of whether they agree with it. Also, not crazy.
