REVIEW: ‘The Losers’ Is Much Better Than Its Title Implies
by John P. HanlonIt’s hard to go into a movie called “The Losers” with high expectations. The title is silly and likely turned some viewers off (who wants to go see a movie called “The Losers,” anyway?). Fortunately, the title does not do the movie justice as the film turns out to be a fun, light and enjoyable action adventure.
—–
The story begins with a unit of quirky individuals on a seemingly routine military mission in Bolivia. That mission becomes more complicated than expected when a group of kids becomes endangered and soon they’re (the “Losers”) all targeted for assassination by a mysterious man who goes by the name Max. After a failed assassination plot against the “Losers,” the team decides to seek vengeance against Max with the assistance of Aisha, an intense and seductive woman they meet while attempting to lay low. The movie focuses on the Losers and Aisha as they attempt to find Max and bring him to justice for betraying them.
Although this sounds like a typical action adventure, events are spiced with comedic elements. The Losers never take themselves all that seriously and the story’s clever wit livens up the action sequences. In one particularly enjoyable sequence, one of the Losers has to break into an office to steal some files which leads to a woman catching him changing his clothes in the elevator and a smart ending to the escape operation all set to a terrific song.
The movie also features a solid cast including Jeffrey Dean Morgan (“Grey’s Anatomy”) as Clay, the leader of the Losers and Zoe Saldana (“Star Trek”) as Aisha. However, the film’s best characters are in supporting roles. Chris Evans (“Fantastic Four”) is great as the tech member of the team, who enjoys wearing a variety of loud t-shirts; and Jason Patric (“Speed 2: Cruise Control”) does strong work as the villain Max, a charismatic and murderous villain who delivers a lot of witty dialogue. Patric seems to relish this diabolical role. The film sees its characters as more fully-developed and smarter than other action movies and their charming quirkiness shines throughout.
Like a lot of other action movies, this film does have ridiculous plot twists and developments — aspects that are unbelievable and over the top. However, there are also some cool surprises. Some of the plot twists work well. Overall, though, one of the biggest surprises was how much fun and entertaining “The Losers” was.
I wouldn’t go as far as to call “The Losers” a winner, but it is a pretty good and deserving of an audience.

If we're not going to allow a rogue CIA bad guy, we're just not going to have any fun at all.
I don't have issues unless and until the military/CIA/whatever bad-guy is portrayed as typical rather than atypical. As long as most other members, even if they're being manipulated by the bad-guy, are real people and not stereotypes, it's all good.
Okay…I WAS looking forward to seeing this as a Friday afternoon-matinee, but Zax's review sounds something that I would pick up on.
The trailer looks like so much fun, however!
I can't see this movie because Zoe Saldana said (white?) Americans, Hollywood, etc were too racist to accept black people, especially black women in leading Hollywood movie roles. So, as a typical, uneducated, knuckle dragging American racist, I can't see any movie with her in it. Besides, this movie is a direct rip,off of the upcoming A-Team movie and was cranked out first to grab an audience it would not have if both came out at the same time. I'll wait for the A-Team.
To Bolivia? Isn't that Jon Stewarts hero, Evo Morales? Uh Oh, This thing is destined to get the F@ck you from Liebowitz.

The 'Original' Losers were a group in World War II. Navy Captian William Storm, Marines Sarge Clay and Gunner Mackey, and Army Air Force Captian Johnny Cloud, The Navajo Ace.

In the early 2000's DC comics Vertigo line created their own "losers".
I saw it and agree with Zax- it's from the same Hollywood trough that tha last couple dozen anti-American movies are from. The villain is so over the top with his love for killing that it gets inane. And the first time you see him, the camera is zoomed in on his flag lapel pin. Just to drive the point home that our villain is a flag-waving American…blew it for me.
What a dork. Guess she's never heard of Halle Berry or a bunch of others I could name.
Never once in the movie is it stated or implied that Max is rogue CIA (my memory might be failing me here, but I don't remember that happening). He has 100 body guards and pulls off operations all around the world. He wasn't some mad-man working outside the system, he was in the system and pulling the strings. Even if they did say he was rogue CIA, that would leave a huge plot hole of how he had complete access to military resources and personnel and was able to freely operate within the USA.
NO WAY! THIS REVIEW IS asinine! Dude!!! What the hell!!?? Dude!? DOOOOOD!!!??? Duhd! dood… dooooohhhd?
What a vague thin review?
Let's make this clear, I do not want to watch a film about another bad American villian… AGAIN. Not until we go through 57 Islamic Regimes… All the ATheist Communist regimes, brutal dictators & police states, then all the terrorist, NARCO & drug regimes, then a few tribal pagan warlords & slave traders, throw in a Puerto Rican, an Ethiopian, a Hindu or two, some Thailand sex slavers, Russian mob, Sicilians, and at least one Canadia politician… after that few thousand films, we can swing on back around to the American whackjobs…. okay?
You hit the nail on the head and kept on going. I too am DONE with self-hating CRAP coming out of Hollywood while totally ignoring the universe of violent third world filth swirling around us 24/7.
The Expendables would kick the crap out of the Losers.
Exactly, dude ….
If you won't give me Islamists, then at least give some atheist communists or drug regimes.
How hard is that to ask??
Or Oprah. "Racist white Americans" made this woman a billionaire, the same
ingratewoman that said she wished she were born in Africa. So do I Oprah. Now THAT'S a movie I intend to see.
That's why "Taken" was such a refreshing flick- you had a good American going after a bad bunch of Eastern Europeaners, as well as some nasty Arabs mixed in. I especially love the last scene when he "negotiates" with the Sheik. Loved it.
I edited for brevity and perhaps I should not have done so.
Because I didn't mean to imply that the bad guy ought to be working outside of the system. The best villains manipulate the system and pervert it.
I also think that I don't define "rogue" the same way you do. I meant only that he had his own agenda that everyone else had not signed on for. He had to hide the truth from his own people, no?
It's not outrageous to think that a vicious outlaw might consider a facade of patriotism good camouflage. There are any number of not-outrageous ways that a vicious outlaw might end up presenting him or herself as a flag-waver.
All Mr. Hanlon said was that The Losers wasn't as bad as expected and had it's moments.
At the rate people are lining up to find offense no one is going to be going to any movies any time soon.
And what Zoe said wasn't even that outrageous. Does anyone think that casting for movies doesn't eliminate anyone who isn't the right sort of ethnic right off? And that doesn't even mean Zoe never got passed over for a role because her features aren't African *enough*. Heck, just a bit ago we were talking about doing a casting call for girls with natural boobs. Does someone think it's not *true* that skin color is one of the more common parameters that parts get sorted by? Does anyone think that the casting of Avatar wasn't *all* about casting according to racial politics? We don't know that this garbage doesn't bother her even when it works in her favor.
From the trailer I'm thinking that this movie could have had an actress of any race in the role of the girl. Maybe that's why she took it.
We can look for ways to interpret things in the best light or we can seek fault always and at every turn.
I'd prefer to try to be generous. It seems less harmful to myself than the other.
In case that wasn't immediately clear… that was a big "Me, too. What he said."
<<If you are going to refuse to see any movie that has someone in it with views you strongly disagree with, you will have to stick too 50's and earlier flicks>>
Monty, at which post-modern university did you get schooled in your moral relativism and your lack of logic? What difference does it make what filmmakers in the 50s THOUGHT? It's what they MADE that influenced the culture and satisfied audiences. And if conservatives attend what lefties MAKE today (this movie, KICK-A**, etc.), then we promote and encourage the production of movies that have a negative, liberal influence on the culture. There are alternatives and if we stay away from the above, then there will be more alternatives over time.
the point of big hollywood and conservatives is to speak up, demand patriotic, pro-American, pro-judeo-christian movies. why? because it has gone tooooooooh far the other way. you, me, and our children are whacked, feeling ashamed and spiteful of this country… why? because of our education and our entertainment. it took me 20+ years to realize that the crazy christian fanactic i remember, is the one from 'Oh God' and not at all from anything I experienced personally.
America is better, exceptional in every way to other nations, cultures and the whole gamut of mankind… Christian, the Jewy folk,… exceptional. A token Ayn Rander skinny dude… but the commie liberal atheist anti-american… okay okay, not anti american… just blame America cuz its safer…. I'm done with it! And no, I don't have that much time anymore, I got the bible to reread, I gots David Barton
s works to finish & D'souza to get to, Reverand Wayne Parry, PJTV, Foxnews, BigHollywood, my family whom I love now more than ever, my work… I don't have time for it anymore. And the less Benicio del Ches and "I'm Matt Damons" I feel compelled to give my money to….THE BETTER.
I was turned off by Max's motives in his schemes and even worse was that he wore an American flag pin on his lapel. The Losers kill Americans (former military/CIA) throughout the movie and the villain is patriotic and wearing an American flag in every scene. It seemed to me that the plot originated from the same mental cesspool that claims that Bush allowed 9/11 to happen in order to go to war.
Absolutely. I couldn't believe how much I loved seeing a gun-toting, daughter-loving, straight, white, American male, be the good guy against the evil, kidnapping, rapist bad guys who included Muslim Arabs. I hadn't rooted so much for a protagonist in a long time.
It is not outrageous to think that a vicous outlaw might consider himself a loyal American. The criminal mind will always try to rationalize it's actions. If you are going to refuse to see any movie that has someone in it with views you strongly disagree with, you will have to stick too 50's and earlier flicks. No wait, actually many people in the 50's who were cranking out patriotic formula B movies were card carrying commies (See the hollywood ten). Zoe probably felt it was neccesary to say something to keep her reputaion in the black comunity positive since she has had white boyfriends in all her recent films.
"I meant only that he had his own agenda that everyone else had not signed on for. He had to hide the truth from his own people, no?"
That is exactly what all conspiracies claim to remain plausible – that some are in on it and most are not (but may be unwitting dupes). Obviously not everyone signed on for killing Kennedy or faking the moon landing. Wheels within wheels…
"Zoe probably felt it was neccesary to say something to keep her reputaion in the black comunity positive since she has had white boyfriends in all her recent films."
In other words, she did it for selfish, careerist reasons. Great defense, Monty.
"Reasons are like a**holes, everyone´s got one."
I can tell from the trailer that Saldana´s character GRATES. Another 90 pound badass chick with the strength of 10 men who flaunts her assets like a certified stripper. That is getting old.
It looks like a fun flick from the trailer. Maybe I can talk the kid into taking me this weekend.

The Goonies Grow Up … to be The Losers?
I like the way you just summed that movie up- okay, i'm ready to watch Liam kick a$$ again…
Saying it's "not outrageous" implies that we're outraged because it's such a shocking, out-there idea. Problem is, it's not. It's an old, boring idea that has nothing to do with current events. Evil CIA guys, evil capitalists, evil militarists – all of whom think they're doing evil "for the good of the country" – are cliches now. You want original villains? How about some of the people who actually claim to be our country's enemies. Why is that so hard?
Would it be racist of me to say I'd tap that?
ABSOLUTELY (not lol)!
The Losers didn't really kill very many til the end – they tranked folks earlier on!!
And Max seemed to have his own agenda – very meglomaniacal – to save the world… it never implied that the actual US govt was OK with his aims that I noticed.
I really liked the movie – I expected 'eh' and got Good!
You're missing out. I saw it last night and it was worth the price of admission. Yeah, the bad guy wears an American flag on his lapel and, yeah, Zoe Saldana is an idiot. But this is a really fun, funny, explosive movie. It reminded me of Arnie's "Commando" with the one-liners and over-the-top action sequences. The good guys in the movie are pro-America and just want to get back home.
I found the movie quite refreshing in a few ways. 1. I don't recall hearing any f-bombs from the commandos at all ( I could be wrong about that) 2. two of the commandos had family they really cared about and wanted to clear their names so they could go home to them 3. the commander "clay" was so devoted to his duties, and honor that his reason for clearing his name was so he could be called 'Colonel" again. Very refreshing considering most heroes in action films are as bad as the bad guys. The Anti-hero stuff is so leftist. I do agree that the 90lbs woman being just as strong as the guys is silly.

You hit the nail on the head hollywoodron, my thoughts EXACTLY!!! the list, by the way, is full of ideas for some knucklehead producer in hollywood to start from.
Gordo is correct, this film lie is getting just too too old.
I just saw it last weekend and while the American flag pin bugged the hell out of me, it seemed pretty obvious that Max was nuts and working his own agenda, whether he was still CIA or former, or whatever. He had tons of money (didn't he own Goliath Industries?) and a PRIVATE security force. Yes, they were former Special Forces, but so what? Does that mean that NO American military guys are bad and may work as mercs? I don't think that's a true assessment. Yes, most of our military are good people (my husband included), but are we only to make movies with Radical Muslims, Communists and Nazis as bad guys while ignoring the fact that sometimes the bad guys are NOT those things? Sometimes they are Americans gone bad, or military gone bad?
And like rlaWTX said, The Losers didn't do a whole lot of killing until the very end. Max seemed like The Joker – just wanted to watch the world burn. And, let's face it, he was funny! I couldn't help but laugh.
I think we are looking to far into this one. It's a modern day A-Team basically. I didn't really see any leftist sucker punches in this one save for the lapel pin. Other than that I had a good time.
Guest, I agree with your assessment. It was PG-13 and there were some bad words, don't recall any f bombs, but there was a salacious love scene. The Colonel and the guys were sweet – for Heaven's Sake, they aborted their mission because children were in danger! And how bad did they feel when those children were killed! My husband – Mr. Big Army guy – got teary eyed!
Look I don't like leftist sucker punches either. I appreciate BH looking into such things so that I can make an informed decision. This movie wasn't bad. It was actually a ton of fun and lots of action. It's good to be aware, but not to nitpick everything to death.
That's my story . . . and I'm stickin' to it!
Look, I like my radical Islam, dictator, communist, fascist, Nazi bad guys as well. But I had no problem with Max other than his lapel pin. I think he was insane and NOT a good guy. PERIOD. Yes, sometimes the bad guys can be American. I get what you are saying, of course, but remember, some of the bad guys were NOT American as well – the ones selling the bombs they were making.
Criminality knows no ethnic boundaries.
