REVIEW: ‘Youth in Revolt’ Disappoints With Uneven Story and More Hollywood Christian Bashing
by John P. Hanlon“Youth in Revolt” is a movie with a good premise but a lackluster plot that revolves around a witty, intellectual teenager experiencing the isolation of adolescence while living with his mother (played by Jean Smart) and her boyfriend. Played by the likable Michael Cera, the lead character, Nick Twisp, spends a lot of the movie trying to attract the attention of a girl he desires. Unfortunately, the movie frequently becomes unnecessarily crass and stereotypical, detracting from an intriguing premise.

At the beginning, in order to protect his mother’s boyfriend from a fight with some sailors he sold a malfunctioning car to, the mother takes her son and boyfriend for a brief vacation. On that vacation, Nick meets a girl he’s immediately attracted to but she’s dating someone else. However, Nick still thinks he has a chance. In order to make himself more attractive to her he develops an alternate and “dangerous” personality named Francois, who has a mustache and enjoys causing trouble and destruction.
The premise, a “nice” guy wanting to engage in some “bad boy” behavior, is an intriguing one and one with a lot of potential. As nice guys are known for finishing last, what good guy has not wanted to become a “bad boy” to attract attention from the female sex? This movie takes that idea to the extreme with Francois showing up as another character entirely, albeit a character that only Nick can see. The movie does have some funny moments and witty dialogue that had me laughing out loud.
Unfortunately, the movie is often stereotypical and crass. For instance, the film features a religious couple – the parents of the girl that Cera’s attracted to. They’re Hollywood-made and think Cera and the cat he shares with their daughter are both devilish fiends their daughter must steer clear of. Their son (played by Justin Long, in a wasted role) is a typical druggie who spends a lot of the movie giving his drugs away to those who want them and to some who don’t . The scenes of drug use are clearly meant to be funny but we’ve seen it all before. When the druggie drugs his own parents for Thanksgiving, it’s more sophomoric than innovative.
In terms of crassness, this is a movie clearly intended for adults. From the drug use to the coarse focus on sexuality, this is not for teenagers. There are couple of adult scenes, including a sequence in which Nick fantasizes about sticking his finger up a woman’s butt. If you are not into tasteless humor, stay away.
***POSSIBLE SPOILER***
Lastly, I hated the conclusion where Nick makes a realization about his relationship with the girl. It is a false and bizarre revelation used to give the movie a “happy” ending. I don’t want to ruin anything, but in the last scene, Nick realizes something about the girl he likes that clearly does not ring true to the audience, and the rest of the movie attests to the fact that this realization is false. I left the theatre disappointed.
Overall, there were some funny moments and a good premise. Unfortunately, the movie does not follow through on it enough. The best part is Cera, who’s very funny. But this won’t measure up to his previous projects (“Arrested Development,” “Juno,” “Superbad”). I give it a C-.

Is this another Jud Aptow project? His movies are usually hit or miss. And call me juvenile, but I like most of them.
I just watched Pineapple Express again a couple of weeks ago, and it I think its just twisted and bizarre enough to work.
Also I recently saw Cera in Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist, and both myself and my daughter love it.
Another fail for Jud Apatow. How many more bombs does he get before he is given the Quentin Terentino Award for excellence?
Your sentence structure is truly terrible. Please proof read, please!! I want to enjoy and understand your reviews, but instead, I am constantly distracted by your poor writing. Think, then write.
Another mindless formulaic Hollywood script, I'll pass, rotting neurons for two hours and 11 bucks is too high a price. The typical Hollywood product where most Christians are mindless Neanderthals and most nuclear families are dysfunctional deserves boycotting except for the rare movies that defy the bashing.
Why are people on this site so angry all the time?
Why are hollywood movies always showing people who believe in Jesus Christ as hypocrits, bad parents, and in the end, irrelevant?
Why are trolls dribblers?
Hollywood today is 95 percent dog vomit.
Lefties puke it out, lefties lap it up.
The rest of us, the number growing every day, pass.
Maybe if they'd leave their hatred of Jews and Christians, along with their diseased politics, out of their "art" things wouldn't be as hit or miss as they are.
I say starve them.
Boycott all California goods until the lefties in and out of Hollywood shut the hell up and stop trying to run the entire country as if that's their entitlement.
You have only to see what California Democrats have done to their own state to learn they aren't entitled, or fit, to run ANYTHING.
Because they're paying attention.
Try it sometime.
This was done better by DJ Qualls in "The New Guy"
Because they're paying attention, Dahhhlin.
You should try it sometime.
They really can't help it. It's their protruding jaws.
The movie presents a crude, raw and self-absorbed world as being the norm. So, in essence it is exactly like Hollywood.
Nothing bad (permanently, life altering bad) ever happens to the cast of loathsome individuals in this film.
Even the characters we are supposed to like do all sorts of things that in real life have lasting negative effects.
How about Sheeni gets HPV or Nick the "nice guy" gets herpes from her?
How about Estelle gets beaten up by her latest boyfriend.
How about getting to see Paul in a hospital because he f**ked himself up on too many shrooms?
Michael Cera was great in Arrested Development, but that was about it for me. His movie roles are all so much the same, I see little point in spending time of them.
This is not a Judd Apatow film, so your statement doesn't make any sense.
Dan, It's because Hollywood is the devil's playground. Unfortunately, all of us are also part of the problem. We feed the monster by paying for tickets, ordering the pay-per-view and picking up premium movie stations from our cable companies. Yes, we pipe this mental, spiruall and physical death into our homes and into ours and our childrens minds where it sinks into our bloodstreams, then into our hearts where it evenually kills us. Hollywood is like Jim Jones with his grape kool-aid
Why are socialist trolls on HuffPo so "cheery" all the time?
Oh ya they're NOT, they're pissed off evil statists, and now that their party and Messiah are both FAILING so miserably they hafta defend Bill "Bubba" Clinton for his "coffee fetching" attitude and Harry "Plantation" Reid for his late 19th CENTURY take on America…
Quelle Suprise!!
You suggest that the Jews in Hollywood are bashing Christianity? No! I don't believe it!
You know what's really funny? This site doesn't get all that many "trolls," so it's sort of funny to see how some posters almost celebrate the fact that they show up at all.
Why run a review the weekend AFTER the movie has opened and already flopped? I enjoy BH, but to be truly competitive in our twitterific/facebooky world, it's got to be a little more on top of reviews, breaking entertainment news, etc.
Apatow had nothing to do with this film.
Yes, the New Guy was a great movie, did these guys at least give credit to that movie?
I don't dislike Michael Cera, Nick & Norah was pretty cool and I've liked a few other things of his I've seen, but he always plays the same person in virtually everything. He is going to need to change it up.
Heck yeah, I loved that flick. I just wish he were in more movies now. I can't really stand Michael Cera.
What's the difference between this movie and Cera's "Year One?"
The clothes?
No, its not an Apatow film. Yes, DJ Qualls did the role in New Guy and it was much funnier. This is more the esoteric indy film genre. It was more of a bizarre love story. It had more potential than what it produced, but I have seen worse. Personally, I like Michael Cera, and no, this definately not another Year One. That one really stank. But then, with Jack Black, thats pretty much what you expect.
I could not agree more. I already won't watch a lot of movies, depending on who is in them or who directs them. These people live in a fantasy world anyway, so who really cares what they think about anything?
You hit it on why I dont like him. Its also why Mike Myers has fallen from my "Actors who I will see no matter what" list. Same thing, every time, but at least Mike is good at what he does. Cera, not so much.
Plus, Eliza Dushku, woohoo!
How many more times can Michael Cera play the EXACT SAME CHARACTER? It was funny the first couple of times, but seriously…
"Played by the likable Michael Cera" does not compute… That guy is as likable as the "I just crapped in my pants… again" look he always has on his face. o -ver-ra-ted clap clap, clap clap clap!!
